Sons of the Arpy: Roland SH-2, System-500, Deckard's Voice, FX Aid Pro, Mimeophon, G-Storm Electro

video upload by thesrabbit

"The SH-2 has some kind of power over me. I can't get away from it. Not that I want to!

This is the first time I've tried adding a 3rd oscillator to the SH-2 by running a single Roland System-500 512 square with PWM into the external audio input. I thought this would naturally lead to making a massive 3 detuned osc + sub monosynth sound, but instead I gravitated to something much more melodic, by setting up each oscillator at a different pitch, making chords with nice intervals. With the ability to set the bender to VCO 2 only, I can change the interval of one of the notes easily, either up or down, without disrupting the vibe at all. The T-Rex Replicator tape delay adds some echo and gritty texture, and then the Make Noise Mimeophon delay fans it out into the stereo field. The sequence of notes is a simple 4 note arp that I transpose with the NiftyKeyz. The mod wheel is assigned to tape delay time, and the arp clock output is fed into a 2HP clock divider, which drives the kick, though half a beat behind because that's how clock dividers work I guess. The kick is a simple decay envelope routed to the G-Storm Electro SH-2 VCF with a moderate amount of resonance and saturation. There's an additional percussive element with some noise going to the G-Storm SH-5 VCF, through the LP first and then the dedicated bandpass which is being swept by an LFO.

The Blade Runner-ish lead sound is of course the Black Corporation Deckard's Voice, paired with the Rachael ring modulator, though it's not being used as a ring-mod, but rather a second sawtooth oscillator. 2 saws are essential to the BR sound, and therefore the Rachael is a required addition to Deckard's Voice. The output runs into the Happy Nerding FX Aid Pro set to the Black Cloud reverb algorithm, which completes the sound.

There's just a tiny dash of master reverb in post that serves as the final glue to hold it all together."

NAMM 2025: A Look at Roland's Galaxias 1.5

video upload by sonicstate

"We caught up with Matt from Roland, who provided an overview of the latest iteration of Galaxis 1.5 at NAMM 2025. This version, launching next week, represents the essence of Roland Cloud as a super instrument encapsulating 50 years of Roland's legacy into a single plugin. Matt explained how Galaxis allows you to search 23,000 sounds across its interface, making it effortless to find the right sound without delving into every piece of hardware.

New features in version 1.5 include the ability to save and export scenes and custom set lists, along with two new effects: the Roland JC-120 and a new modulation delay.

He highlighted the plugin's capabilities like stacking layers called scenes and using macro controls for mapping multiple parameters. Each macro also features a dedicated LFO for enhanced sound manipulation. Galaxis 1.5 will be available at the end of January through the Roland Cloud Ultimate subscription."

NAMM 2025: Roland Juno-D Keyboards

video upload by sonicstate

"At NAMM 2025, Nick from Sonicstate caught up with Ed from Roland to discuss the updated Roland Juno-D series. Initially released in September, the Juno-D offers three variations: a 61-note synth, a 76-note synth action, and an 88-note piano action keyboard. It features the ZEN-Core sound engine, boasting 3,500 sounds that you can split and layer across seven parts. Additionally, there is a dedicated rhythm part, and the built-in pattern sequencer enhances creative capabilities.

Ed explained that the Juno-D utilizes PCM-based sounds and supports Roland Cloud and ZENOLOGY Pro for deeper sound editing. The Juno-D includes USB-C power, eliminating the need for AA batteries, and it utilizes USB-C for seamless computer connection without requiring drivers. The keyboard supports splitting and layering, with up to seven layers in super layer mode. It also includes a 64-step sequencer, built-in rhythms, and phrase pads for recording and playback. "Tone Explorer is a technology preview from Roland Future Design Lab, made available for music creators to try as a GALAXIAS Labs Experiment."

Press release follows:

Roland Future Design Lab Introduces AI-powered Tone Explorer Technology Preview

Group seeks feedback from progressive music creators on workflow-enhancing AI application.

Los Angeles, CA, November 12, 2024 — Roland Future Design Lab, the horizon-scanning R&D group of Roland Corporation, has introduced their first-ever technology preview called Tone Explorer. Focused on the challenge of finding the perfect sound for a musical part, Tone Explorer uses neural networks to analyze the characteristics of a recorded MIDI phrase and presents an array of matching options ranging from safe to surprising. Offered as a functional but unfinished “technology preview,” Tone Explorer is a unique opportunity for early adopter music technology fans to directly influence future Roland development.

The Tone Explorer Technology Preview is being offered through Roland Cloud as a “GALAXIAS Labs Experiment.” Existing Roland Cloud Ultimate members have immediate access to the preview, while newcomers can sign up for a 3-month trial by visiting the Tone Explorer information page and completing a brief onboarding questionnaire. While participating in the preview, newcomers will enjoy the full range of benefits a Roland Cloud Ultimate membership has to offer.

Paul McCabe, leader of Roland Future Design Lab, said, 'When Roland and Universal Music Group established The Principles for Music Creation with AI, hearing from musicians as we consider and develop AI applications was made fundamental. With the Tone Explorer technology preview, we are honoring this as we seek input from innovative music creators on everything from initial concept to execution. If we move forward with Tone Explorer development in the future, it will be based directly on the feedback we receive over the coming weeks.'

Roland SP-404 MK2 / 'beat-less' ambient drone

video upload by Coolout Beats

This one is in vai Coolout Beats who had the following to say on it:

"Here's a quick demo turning a simple tone into a more complex ambient drone. Although the SP-404 is mainly known for sample-based music, the new internal Sound Generator function opens up a new world of possibilities. Created live with no samples, using a Launchcontrol mapped to the SP-404 FX busses.

Bus 1: Chromatic Pitch Shift (to create a 3-note chord)
Bus 2: Cloud Delay (granular pitch shift. stereo widen and delay)
Bus 3: 303 Vinyl Sim (wow/flutter and saturation)
Bus 4: Super Filter (low-pass filter)"

And the YouTube description:

"Just a quick demo of some out-of-the-box 404 techniques I've been working on, using the internal Sound Generator for ambient experiments.

The chain is simple:
Sound Generator - Chromatic PS - Cloud Delay - 303 Vinyl Sim - Super Filter

*apologies for the crackles and hum. I left the external input engaged with a synth and turntables sitting there. You can actually hear my arm hitting things. It sounded kinda cool, so I left it in."

The Acclaimed FANTOM Synthesizer Series, Supercharged with the Latest Roland Sound Technologies and Updated Creative Tools

Los Angeles, CA, April 25, 2024 — Roland announces FANTOM EX, a new flagship synthesizer series for professional musicians and producers. New effects and a host of fresh workflow enhancements are also included.

Each FANTOM EX model provides the most expansive collection of premium sound engines available in a hardware instrument. Roland’s ACB, ZEN-Core, V-Piano, SuperNATURAL, and Virtual ToneWheel technologies spark inspiration at every turn, providing expressive and inspiring sounds for every musical style.

With FANTOM EX, users can compose and perform with over 7000 genre-defining Roland sounds and go further with premium sound content on Roland Cloud. Eleven sound expansion titles come as standard, including JUPITER-8, SH-101, and JX-3P ACB Expansions; n/zyme, JD-800, JUNO-106, JUPITER-8, JX-8P, and SH-101 Model Expansions; the German Concert V-Piano Expansion 01; and the SuperNATURAL Acoustic Piano 3 Expansion.

The powerful custom processors in FANTOM EX provide smooth and precise operation with plenty of overhead, enabling loads of polyphony and full patch remain for seamless transitions. There are dozens of simultaneous effects, including new studio-grade reverbs and updated Master FX for shaping the overall sound. A characterful analog filter is also available, perfect for infusing tones with extra warmth and grit.

FANTOM EX is primed to be the center of any production universe. Users can directly shape sounds and develop musical ideas with a friendly, ergonomic panel filled with buttons, knobs, and sliders. The color touchscreen dynamically changes to support the task at hand, and it’s now possible to personalize the look by importing custom images for the screensaver and startup view.

The deep onboard sampling and composition tools in FANTOM EX support fast sound creation and quick arrangement of song ideas. Multiple workflow options include the classic Roland TR-REC step sequencer, real-time recording with piano roll editing, and 16 RGB pads for triggering sounds, samples, and clips.

FANTOM EX flows effortlessly into any computer-based production setup. There are dedicated modes for popular software platforms, including Ableton Live, Logic Pro, MainStage, Cubase, and Studio One. With the built-in 16x3 audio/MIDI USB interface, users can mix and layer soft synths with hardware sounds, send sequencer parts to computer tracks, route DAW sources through FANTOM EX effects, and more.

The loaded FANTOM EX rear panel supports connections with a wide range of gear. There are XLR combo connectors for mics and instruments and eight 1/4-inch outputs to route sounds to external destinations. MIDI I/O is also available, along with dual CV/Gate outputs for driving modular and analog synths.

Each FANTOM EX model comes equipped with a premium keyboard and aftertouch support. The FANTOM 8 EX offers the ultimate weighted experience with 88 hammer-action keys, while the 61-note FANTOM 6 EX and 76-note FANTOM 7 EX feature semi-weighted synth action. Press release follows.

Fifty Years of Legendary Roland Synths and Drum Machines and Thousands of Iconic Sounds in One Powerful Super Instrument, Available Exclusively on Roland Cloud

Los Angeles, CA, Nov. 14, 2023 — Roland introduces GALAXIAS, a powerful new software-based musical instrument available exclusively on Roland Cloud. Roland has been a pioneer in music technology for over half a century, delivering a continuous stream of influential instruments and effects that have fueled countless hits, defined genres, and driven cultural trends. With GALAXIAS, musicians and producers can explore and experience them all in one creative environment.

GALAXIAS runs as a standalone application on macOS and Windows. It will also be available in VST3 and AU plug-in formats for DAW music production soon after the initial release. Within GALAXIAS, users can work with any instrument on Roland Cloud and instantly access a vast searchable library with over 20,000 ready-to-play sounds. From historic icons such as the JUPITER-8, TR-808, and D-50 to modern instruments like ZENOLOGY and SYSTEM-8, GALAXIAS harnesses Roland's evolving sonic legacy into a single “Super Instrument” with infinite creative possibilities.

GALAXIAS provides the ability to layer up to four instruments and create massive sonic superclusters called Scenes. Every layer has its own key range, transpose, and MIDI input settings, plus a dedicated arpeggiator. Convenient learn and drag functionality makes it fast and easy to build intricate sounds that are deeply engaging and demand attention. Ultra-powerful macro controls offer a new level of expression with simultaneous operation of up to 128 parameters via internal LFOs or an external MIDI controller. Scenes can be organized in Setlists for live performances, complete with gapless transitions for a seamless stage experience.

In addition to the formidable effects within each individual instrument, GALAXIAS provides two insert effects per layer and two global send effects. A growing collection of authentic Roland and BOSS effects are on hand, and it’s possible to route layers to various external destinations for further processing.

The inspiring GALAXIAS interface has been carefully forged for rapid creativity and instant satisfaction. Everything is logically organized, making it simple to go deep and quickly translate ideas into great-sounding tracks. Users can delve into a single instrument layer, tweak the complete set of parameters, and get the experience of using the original hardware with Roland’s classic instrument plug-ins. With the full-screen Immersive View, the focus can be toggled between the entire Scene and an individual instrument or effect using a single click or key command.

Included with Roland Cloud Ultimate membership, GALAXIAS is a rapidly evolving platform instrument that will continue to improve with new sounds and capabilities added regularly. A 30-day free Ultimate trial provides access to GALAXIAS and everything Roland Cloud offers, including software versions of vintage Roland instruments, ZENOLOGY, Sound Packs, Wave Expansions, Zenbeats, and much more.

Availability & Pricing
Roland GALAXIAS is available now in the U.S. exclusively with the Roland Cloud Ultimate membership, which is $199 annually or $19.99 monthly.
