Roland CompuRhythm CR-78 Demo

YouTube via mrduckbutt
"Brief demo of some of the features on the Roland CR-78 drum machine. Mostly playing around with rhythm selections (incl. A/B variations), voice cancel, tempo, automatic fills, automatic fading, etc. And of course no CR-78 demo would be complete without playing "In the Air Tonight" and some Hall & Oates ("Kiss On My List"). The former uses the "Disco-2" rhythm with snare cancelled out; the latter uses "Rock-1" with automatic fill 7.

On a side note, I haven't found any permutation of rhythms to give the exact bass drum pattern on "In the Air Tonight". Maybe this is how Phil did it as well, but I just used the programming interface to make a custom rhythm with this bass drum pattern. Then I load this at the same time as "Disco-2" (these are the two yellow buttons pressed in the demo)."

CR68-M-TMG DIY-retrokit for Roland's CR-68

2019/05 - CR-68-M-TMG demosong Published on May 21, 2019 Stereoping

"The CR68-M-TMG is a DIY-retrokit for Roland's CR-68. 'M' stands for Midi as all voices can be triggerd via Midi - including Accent. The 'TMG' describes the cooler part - the PCB also holds the three missing instruments of the big sister CR-78 which the CR-68 normally lacks: Tambourine (TB), Metalbeat (MB) and Guiro (GU). All voices were carefully recreated based on original schematics. Tambourine is available as longer and shorter decay and Guiro in high and low pitch. Each of the 3 drumvoices uses a special inductor to build a very steep bandpassfilter definately needed to form the characteristic timbre. We've given a little batch of these inductors into production on rare, old winding machines to get the perfect sound.

This mellow demosong shows details of the PCB and electronic parts as well as some footage of the CR-68 itself. The drums are - of course - coming from a CR-68 equipped with this retrofit. The song introduces the 3 instuments one after the other. Typography and visual helpers like realtime analyzer and oscilloscope will guide you to easily identify the single TB/MB/GU sounds in the mix.

The CR68-M-TMG retrokit is available now in the stereoping shop. Production run is limited due to these special coils."

"August 8, 2013

For immediate release: Bitley presents Omnia

Omnia is the latest incarnation of Bitley's Fairlight-based sound banks, as developed from 2010 to present date. The first release in the Omnia series is Omnia Samples. This contains all of the wave files (samples), comprising 2,3 Gigabyte of data and nearly 6,000 individual samples. Omnia Samples is released in two versions: One raw wave version, which fits all samplers and sample players that can import AIFF and / or WAV files. This covers nearly all sampler instruments since many years back. The other version is made for Reason 7. Subsequent Omnia series releases for Reason will include things from Bitley's previous Fairlight II+, XXL and Platinum refills alongside with completely new patches as well as fixes and updates, new naming conventions and more focused categories. Fairlight Platinum will remain as the largest Bitley refill with its 3,600 instrument patches. There is also a Fairlight-based Kontakt library available which recently was updated (July 2013).

Bitley is a swedish maker of sound banks, programming hardware synthesizers as well as making software releases. The company started out in 2010 by releasing the sound banks Orlando JX10 and Fairlight CMI Legacy. Bitley's usage of the Fairlight samples is an agreement with Fairlight and Peter Vogel in Australia. Newer refills include The Prophet, O8, Flux, Poly Ensemble and more.

Roland WS-1

Title link takes you to a couple more shots via this auction.

Details:
"This is the Roland WS-1, the extremely rare write switch for the CR-78 Compurhythm Drum Machine... The CR-78 is one of the best drum machines Roland ever made, but without the WS-1, it's just another beat box. With the WS-1, you have full control over the 4 yellow program buttons on your machine. It is possible to program the CR-78 using a footswitch in real time, you can't program it accurately in step time without this switch." Auction link sent my way via Omeganaut

Vintage Roland CR68 w/ Analogue Solutions MIDI Kit

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.
via this auction

"The CR-68 is a classic analog Rhythm Machine related to the famous CR-78.
The CR-68 has the same sound set and rhythm patterns, but is not programmable and lacks many of the better features found on a CR-78.

However the CR-68 does have breaks & fills, an accent that really livens up its beats, and a balance knob that can be used to weird-out the sounds a little bit.

A much cheaper alternative to the CR-78 considering it is strictly limited to its preset patterns.

The CR-68 offers up the basic set of rhythms and sounds.
There's 4 Rock, 2 Disco, Waltz, Shuffle, Slow Rock, Swing, Fox Trot, Tango, etc...

The sounds are analog and include kick, snare, rim, hi-hat, cymbal, maracas, claves, cowbell and congas.

These days the CR-68's sounds are often sampled instead, after which the machine itself may be kept around for use as a paperweight or book-end.

To overcome this, we are currently installing an Analogue Solutions MIDI Kit, so you can control this via MIDI as well. Accent is also supported!"

Roland CR 68 demo

Published on Oct 21, 2012 by superfroe

"Just a general run-through of the fabulous CR-68 "CompuRhythm" analog drum machine (little brother of the legendary CR-78). The CR-78 is what's heard on Phil Collins' "In the air tonight", among other classic records. The '68 is the same sound engine as the '78, but with a few less programming "features" (a few less buttons)."

Roland CR-78 CompuRhythm with Modifications - Demo Video

Published on Jan 13, 2013 zibbybone·104 videos

"I am selling this Roland CR-78. Here is a quick video demonstrating that its basic functions work properly. A previous owner added a LED readout on the front that counts the number of measures that have been played. The Green button resets the counter. There are individual audio outputs for kick and snare and 2 additional IOs with combinations of instruments. There are some 3 position switches that I have not been able to figure out their function. There are some concentric pots that seem to affect the snare drum. One seems to be filter cut-off, but I'm not sure what the other is for. Unit is 220 volt with European style wall plug. I used a voltage transformer to operate."
