Rosen Sound Synth Demos & Restorations

Playlist:
1. Oberheim OB-X - Rosen Sound Demo
The OBX was the first major "answer" to the Prophet 5 synthesizer, and at least in our opinion, was the best answer anyone could've given.

The OB-X is based on the basic design of the (S)ynthesizer (E)xpander (M)odule also from Oberheim. Like the SEM, it features two discreet VCO's with saw and pulse, two envelopes, and the low pass section of the SEM filter. It also added noise, a release control, and cross modulation (similar to the Prophet's cross mod). The prophet's cross mod was a bit more dynamic, though. A flexible LFO section is also featured.

None the less, the OBX is in a species all of it's own in many ways. It's one of the very few mostly discreet programmable polyphonic synthesizers, and more than that spec, it sounds unique and absolutely marvelous.

Our unit features encore midi

2. Moog Minimoog - Rosen Sound Demo

3.SCI Prophet 5 - Rosen Sound Demo
In a lot of ways this needs no introduction. One of the most iconic poly synths ever made, and the first synth to offer true programmability with polyphonic architecture.

The Prophet 5 offers your basic amenities in a poly synth with 5 voices each with 2 VCO's, a low pass VCF, a VCA, two EG's, one LFO with multiple wave shapes available, with POLY MOD as the icing on the cake. This lets you make FM type sounds and is part of what makes the prophet 5 unique.

Our unit features factory midi
4. Oberheim Four Voice - Rosen Sound Demo
This in our opinion is one of the finest synthesizers ever made in terms of overall sound. The features are of course many and the synth as a whole is very flexible and powerful, but the sound it outputs is nothing short of mesmerizing.

The FVS features 4 Synthesizer Expander Modules (SEM) each representing a polyphonic voice. This means for one patch, each SEM must be setup identically. This may seem like too much, but it's actually a very enjoyable process that causes you to think different about the patch your making, the polarity of your modulation per voice, and subtle differences you can set.

The synth can also be used in a powerful unison mode, allowing each SEM to be adjusted separately for a crazy 4x dual oscillator synthesizer each with a multi mode filter to be fired at once.

Each SEM is as or more powerful than your standard mono synth, featuring 2 oscillators with saw and pulse each, PWM, FM, 1 LFO, two EG's, a bi-polar filter modulation control, and the sweetest Oberheim filter ever made featuring a bandpass filter and a sweepable LP-HP filter. These filters are special in the way that when the resonance is turned up, there is no loss of volume or low end.

Additionally, our FVS is an early model with no programmer (a feature loathed by many anyway). Instead, it features 2 dual mini sequencers with a common clock available. This means you can do 8-step 4 note poly sequencing between the four SEM's, or split the keyboard with one sequencer playing 1 SEM and 3 note chords on the other side of the keyboard.

Functionally, our FVS is very much in tune and has been stabilized to survive travel and tuning consistency. It is in tune as soon as it's turned on, and we provide a quick start guide for our rental customers to learn how to easily program and tune the machine.

Our FVS also features MIDI in via a modified YARN's module installed inside. This allows through basic midi and if desired (more complicated) midi scripts to play it polyphonically (default on boot), sequence each SEM assigned to a separate channel (enabling MPE), or played in Unison. All of these features can be harnessed by utilizing SYSEX or the Yarns editor, all which is provided on a thumb drive for rentals.
5. Moog Memorymoog - Rosen Sound Demo
To start, let's forget the internet-lore or an "unreliable" and "impossible to tune" machine. Our service shop is known worldwide for our work on Memorymoogs and stabilizing them for real production use.

Now, let's introduce you to (what we consider) the pinnacle of Moog synthesizers. With 3 oscillators + ladder filter per voice, flexible and intuitive modulation, and a knob per function, the Memorymoog is not a force to be reckoned with, and is in what we consider to be the top 3 best sounding synthesizers ever made.

From lush pads, 18 oscillator unison leads, heavy bass, and even gentle timbres, the memorymoog is sure to be a staple piece for your session in any genre on music. Plus it has everyones favorite feature: an arpeggiator!

Our rental memorymoog will arrive with an expression pedal and 12 custom patches (87-99) made by our resident in house programmer, Eli Goss. These 12 patches are the juice that will fuel modern productions to achieve sounds unobtainable by any other synth, with plugins not even worth a mention.
6. Oberheim OB8 - Rosen Sound Demo
One of our staple synths in the collection. The lore of the OB8 is that it's a less-exciting OBXa, however, with some choice mod's which we've done to ours, they are sonically identical.

The OB8 is one of the most flexible synthesizers available, which includes deep LFO routing from the front panel, and a PAGE 2 function that transforms every knob and button on the synth to do even deeper modulation, including quantized LFO's, musical "OBXA" style detuning, envelope routing, and more.

Additionally, our OB8 has been fitted with a Pratt & Read keybed, which brings the true feel of American poly synths to the experience, while also having the amenities provided by the B5 EPROM including factory midi.
7. Sequential Circuits Prophet 10 - Rosen Sound Demo
The Prophet 10 is more than just 2 Prophet 5's in one box; featuring an active EQ per voice, deeper modulation, and more performance capabilities with it's dual manuals and CV pedal inputs. This prophet 10 also features midi in and out.
8. Oberheim Four Voice Sequence
You could do an entire score with this #oberheimfourvoice. With quad poly sequencing and split modes the sky is the limit. Available for rent through us! Contact us for rates and availability. And yes, it has midi!
9. Prophet 5 Rev 3 Restoration

10. Juno 106 Multiboard removal

11. Juno 106 80017A Chip Failure - What To Check
In this video I go over a couple things to check not only to see if your 80017A chips are failing, but also other potential failures of the juno, including failure of one of the MC5534A dual DCO chip.

This video also applies to other models, such as the MKS 30, HS 60, GR 700 and some others.

As noted on the Rosen Sound website, The Cabin is LA’s largest collection of Vintage Synthesizers available to the public, and home to Rob Rosen’s vast collection of meticulously maintained vintage synth gear. All of the synths in this room are wired to a common patch bay that is connected to high quality DI boxes before hitting Apogee pre amps and converters.

While the room has over 30 synthesizers inside at any given time, there are also many additional options -- including different models and doubles that are stored and accessible directly outside The Cabin’s walls for your immediate use.

Every synth in The Cabin's collection has been carefully curated to bring sonic awesomeness to your project. From all the classic staples to rare modular synths, The Cabin has it all and even more available on standby.

Big thanks to Rob Rosen and Eli Goss for their time to take us through The Cabin and demo some of their fantastic synthesizers!

Moog Source SN 3696 w/ Encore MIDI

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

"To me this sounds better than most late 70s minimoogs Ive used and you can save 256 patches on this! This Source is the one you want and will save you a TON of headache in the future. This source has been serviced in 2021 by the best in the business right now, Rosen Sound, and sounds absolutely fantastic. The fine folks at Rosen sound rebuilt the power supply to help future proof the rest of the components and increase stability. They also installed a new Encore Midi which adds midi sync ability, midi in and out, and expands the memory 16 times the original, these are 325 new plus installation. Please research the encore midi system before purchasing. They also replaced the two light sensors for the control knob with NOS parts and calibrated to factory specs. These all will go and these parts are getting harder to find, like damn near impossible, and very hard to install/calibrate. It took Rosen Sound months to source these parts alone and they probably own the last remaining available for these. This control knob is now ready for another 30 years of use and this synth is impossible to control without it. As it is the membrane works perfectly but it also comes with a spare membrane panel from which is supposed to be the best replace panel available for when the membrane experiences problems in the future (they all go bad eventually). Parts and labor for all of this future proofing on a once very finicky synth was about 1500 dollars. If you buy a different source and want to keep it alive I would expect to pay the same in the near future."

Memorymoog Sound Design

video by wedream2

"I finally got an opportunity to take a deep dive into sound design on the Memorymoog (after complete restoration and upgrades performed by Rosen Sound). I tweaked most of the factory sounds and added expression pedal programming to each. In the following examples, a factory sound is identified by the bracketed number and the name of the factory sound. I also created original sounds that are identified by name only (no bracketed numbers). I used the additional stereo outputs recently installed, so listening through stereo headphones is recommended. The panning positions of the voices cycle, similar to the OB-8, except when the cyclic memory mode is selected, where upon the same key repeatedly played, holds the same pan position. To avoid going over an hour in length, I eliminated multiple factory and original sounds from this demo. The more interesting and complicated original sounds are showcased."

SCI Pro One - Rosen Sound Demo

video upload by Rosen Sound

"Somehow this never got listed public. This demo is by Eli Goss and is shot in the a reverb chamber that was built for Captain & Tennille, which was then torn down to build what is now the synth cabin.

Not much to add to this considering I’m listing it public 2 years later, but its none the less an awesome demo by the venerable Eli Goss"

Studio Electronics MIDI Mini

video upload by Mineral Sound

"Here's a short demo of the Studio Electronics MIDI Mini/Minimoog Model D I have listed for sale on Reverb. Some playing around with bass/lead sounds, going through the oscillator waveforms, and sweeping the filter to show how it sounds and performs. Using a Juno-106 as a MIDI controller, not included in sale!"

via this auction

Pics of the inside below.

"this is one of the early versions with the original sound boards ripped out of a Minimoog Model D. Some might call it sacrilege, I call it a great way to get authentic, vintage tone in a 4U rack!

This unit is freshly returned from service at Rosen Sound in Burbank, CA. No oscillator drift, all pots, switches and functions in working order! But there's only so much I can describe in words; check out the demo video I made (above, after the pictures) to hear it in action. This thing is FAT. Floor-shaking basses, screaming leads, and saturated resonance; if you know you know, there's no substitute for the OG Moog sound.

The only functional issue I've found is that the VCO pots are a little scratchy, and the VCO 1 pot has a little trouble clicking into the rightmost waveform (PWM square). I spoke with the tech and since the pots are no longer manufactured, the only solution would be to machine new pots, which would likely cost more than the unit itself. But if that's the only issue for this 40-year-old beast I'd say it's doing pretty well!

Cosmetically the item is in great condition; the faceplate is more or less pristine, with only some very light rack wear on the mounting tabs. The top of the unit has some scratches and scuffs (see pictures),as it's a bit of a tight fit getting this into a rack (but of course those scuffs will be invisible once mounted). Back and sides are in perfect condition."

YAMAHA CS-80 Synthesizer Demo - Sounds, Patches & Ambient Soundscapes

Published on Mar 25, 2020 synth4ever

"Yamaha CS-80 analog synthesizer demo featuring various sounds, patches and ambient soundscapes on this classic vintage synth. This Yamaha CS80 synth demo features six different patches showcasing the Yamaha CS-80's oscillator PWM, pads, bells, noise, LFO and ring modulation capabilities. Filmed at Rosen Sound (www.rosensound.com) in Burbank, CA with slight reverb added.

A descendant of the legendary Yamaha GX-1, the Yamaha CS-80 is a beautiful analog synthesizer produced by Yamaha from 1977-79 and is most famous for being used by Vangelis on the Blade Runner soundtrack. Weighing in at 220lb, the Yamaha CS-80 is a massive synthesizer in terms of size and weight, and is the top of the line synth in the same family as the Yamaha CS-50 and CS-60.

The Yamaha CS-80 is well-known for being extremely organic and expressive, thanks to its incredible interface which includes plenty of sliders, a ribbon controller and polyphonic aftertouch on the 61-note keyboard, which allows for unparalleled performance flexibility.

The Yamaha CS80 can create lush strings, beautiful leads, powerful pads and strong basses and allows for deep sonic exploration and improvisation. In particular, the Yamaha CS-80's ring modulator is one of the most beautiful sounding and versatile designs ever created, as it features full control over attack and decay time, depth, speed, and modulation.

The Yamaha CS-80 is a bi-timbral, dual channel analog synth featuring 8 polyphonic voices. Both channels feature a complete VCO-VCF-VCA signal path and can be controlled independently. The Yamaha CS80's oscillators provide saw, square, PW and PWM, and sine waveshapes which allows for varied sound shaping.

The Yamaha CS-80 LFO features 5 waveforms including sine, square, sawtooth (up/down), noise and external signal and can go into audio rate for extreme sounds. The LFO can also modulate the VCO, VCF and VCA at different levels simultaneously for nice vibrato, filter modulation or tremolo effects.

The Yamaha CS-80 filter is a thing of beauty and features 2x high-pass and 2x lowpass filters. The filters do not self oscillate but have a lovely tone and quality to them. The Yamaha CS-80 also features independent ADSR envelopes for both the filter and VCA, allowing you to shape the sound over time.

Additional controls include adjustable touch response levels for functions including filter brilliance, vibrato and more. There is also portamento and glissando on board, as well as chorus and tremolo effects.

The Yamaha CS-80 is a beautifully expressive instrument and legendary analog synthesizer, which gives the player full control over their performance. In this demo I tried to showcase some sounds and patches in an ambient style, including pads and experimental improvisation. I hope you enjoy the music from this amazing synthesizer. "

Oberheim OB-8 w/ Moog Style Knobs & Fatar Keyboard

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

"The GOOD!!!
- I just paid $2000 in service fees that include a recapped power supply, deep cleaning, Synthchaser Voice Board Service Kit with extra trimmers, new IC chips / IC sockets / Op Amps / Transistors / Film Capacitors, etc.
- I just bought and installed a brand new (and MUCH better) Fatar Keybed that plays and feels beautiful.
- I just bought (but have NOT installed) a brand new Midi Mod Kit, Battery Eliminator Chips (so you no longer need a battery to save patches!), and wood end pieces from Rosen Sound. These are brand new and in the boxes.
- In all I have put over $3000 into this classic 8 voice, 2 osc, 3 lfo, monster analog synth.

The BAD!
- This synth does NOT like to be cold. When it is cold it sometimes takes 15-20 minutes to warm up and stabilize. When first turned on a couple voices sound terrible and that usually causes some serious panic. After it warms up I just hit the auto tune and it's usually solid after that. The crappy video included shows the synth warmed up after it was cold from a near by AC blasting all night long. The sound is just coming out of a stereo speaker but you get the idea.
- The knobs appear to be Moog style knobs. I think they look great but if you want it all original you will have to track down Oberheim knobs. Personally I don't like the original knobs. I also have the original keybed listed for sale if you want to have that one too."

"EMS Synthi AKS 1970s Synthesizer. This listing is for the A unit only. However, the KS (keyboard-sequencer) will be available separately and is currently being serviced by Rosen Sound.

This Synthi was purchased from the original owner who taught sound design with the unit. It is fully functional and sounds absolutely incredible. It is hands down an absolutely beautiful instrument. It is incredible for sound design and re-amping. I’ve used it as a recording tool for the past few years and it’s in studio-ready condition.

The original lid is in good condition and both original latches are fully functional. The original handle is in very good condition. Feel free to ask any questions."

gettin moody with the 1981 Oberheim OB-Xa

video upload by J3PO

"The Oberheim OB-Xa is one of they vibiest synths of all time, in my opinion. This video is an exploration of tone and sound, hopefully capturing the essence of the beautiful pads, strings, plucks, and soundscapes that the instrument is capable of creating. Some patches are factory and some are presets I've made. The OB-Xa is also capable of making incredible basses, aggressive brasses, leads, and so on, but in this video, I've decided to present to you what I think the instrument excels at: the softer side of things--creating moody atmospheres and melancholic tones.

This particular OB-Xa was serviced recently by Rob Rosen at Rosen Sound in Burbank, CA.

I have preset banks available for the Prophet Rev 2, Prophet 6, OB-6, Prophet 5/10, XLN Audio's Addictive Keys Mark One, Softube’s Model 84, and the DiscoDSP OB-Xd available on my website www.j3po.net. If you're a Nord Stage 3 user, download my bank from the Nord Keyboards website."

Published on Dec 1, 2019 Brian Holt

"Brian Holt demonstrates the use of the ARP Pro DGX Version 1 Synthesizer in the bridge section of Genesis' "Robbery Assault and Battery". In the original recording Tony Banks used a Pro Soloist, which had the same sounds but rocker switches for the patch selections whereas the DGX has push-button type switches."

Sequential Circuits Prophet 5 Rev 3.3 w/ Tauntek Firmware

via this auction

"Rev 3.2 Prophet 5 upgraded to 3.3 with full memory (128 patches) and factory midi. It has the latest Tauntek firmware which adds many enhancements including unison detune, assignable voices for unison mode, programmable Omni off mode ..., IAC mod for a professional power connection instead of the old power chord. The synth has been fully recapped (power supply and voices) and calibrated. All of the keys work flawlessly and have been cleaned and has new brushings installed for soft key action. The synth has been calibrated and cleaned for sale by Rob Rosen at Rosen Sound about two weeks ago. Before that it was regularly serviced by Greg Montalbano (the Prophet 5 whisperer). Studio use only and this one is in near mint condition. Super clean, sounds beautiful and plays like a dream. Couch not included."

Oberheim Two Voice TVS-1 Restoration

video upload by Rosen Sound

SN 0394

"Welcome to our new YouTube channel! We are excited to get back into making fun videos. In this video we give a peek into the various aspects of fully going through an Oberheim TVS-1, also known as the Oberheim 2 voice, a SEM based synthesizer from the mid 1970's

Join Rob and Eli's disembodied voice restoring one of our favorite synthesizers ever made!

For service, rental, and sales, please visit us at www.rosensound.com

This specific TVS was sold to us by a client who purchased it from our client Peter Freeman many many years ago. Peter recently passed away, and we dedicate this video and this TVS-1 to his memory. RIP!
This TVS-1 is not for sale, however can be rented among many other vintage synthesizers in our rental fleet.

Thank you to Benny Bock for providing the demo at the end for this video. A longer version will be uploaded soon.

Background music by Rob Rosen (though really, the TVS plays itself!)"

This one was spotted and sent in via Soviet Space Child.
