Quantizer Sunset Showdown: Tiptop QuantiZer vs Intellijel uScale.

Published on Jan 7, 2017 Dudadius

"Quantizer Sundown Showdown!

I’m a longtime fan of the Intellijel uScale quantizer. It’s quirky, but if you massage it correctly, you can get some musical loveliness out of her. It’s all over my past albums.

Enter the Tiptop QuantiZer. Well, it sure is gorgeous looking! And I love the Circadian Rhythms, so let’s give her a go!

I’ll say off the bat that this is a little apples to oranges; the uScale excels at taking a CV input and outputting 2 [TWO!] quantized cv’s that you can modulate and muck with in very “interesting ways” (as Danjel might say). It’s the ability to modulate the interval degree of the B output that is really cool.

junkyard-kahrs just posted some excellent uScale tutorials which prompted me to revisit this lovely. And coincidentally it’s right when I received the Tiptop QuantiZer.

You’re dealing with just one cv in and one cv out on the Tiptop, so everything is much more straight-forward. So if it’s immediacy you want, this might be the pick. But if it’s crazy musical melody interval madness you’re after: uScale. Or…the typical Muff’s answer: BOTH.

Patch notes:

I’ve been trying to get comfortable with the Moog Mother sequencer, so that is again my source here. I just muck about with playing the ‘keyboard’ while adjusting the cv attenuation going into the uScale. Output A from that is playing an Atlantis, and depending on the attenuation, you will get varying degrees of…NOTHING or the interval you’re after. I need to understand the voltage range of the uScale a little better…

Output B is the interesting part, to me. It’s playing a Rubicon/Polaris combo, and the SHIFT amount is controlled by Planar. This essentially allows you to toss the interval relationship between A and B all over the place, but always within the scale. It’s bloody brilliant! Or ‘Ace’, as some might say.

The Tiptop QuantiZer is playing a Cwejman voice. A Qu-bit Nano Rand is getting clock and then providing random gates to a Pressure Points which in turn passes her voltages along to the QuantiZer. I programmed three chords which correspond to the general Fmi7 vibe that is happening here. This voice just bobs along in a random manner behind the other three voices.

Tiptop Z-DSP with valhalla chip and Intellijel Rainmaker provide the ‘space’. Dubmix is the mixer.

It’s all a little raw, but it was a fun exercise to use both Quantizers…"

Tiptop Z8000 + Sequential Switch Videos by Station 252

Tiptop Z8000 + Sequential Switch part 1 from Station 252 on Vimeo.

"I new about the existence of sequential switches for a long time and recently finally had a chance to try it out. I was so impressed with the results that I bought two Doepfer A-151 Quad Sequential Switches. Those little gems are an amazing addition to Tiptop Z8000 sequencer

This video is the first patch I came up with.

Z8000 - 4 vertical 4 step sequencers are connected to the first A-151, they share the same clock and are simultaneously reset to 3 steps by the Tiptop Trigger Riot. The output of the sequential switch is connected to Tiptop QuantiZer which in turn is driving Z3000 oscillator.

Circadian Rhythms - channels 5-8 are connected to the second A-151, the output of which is driving a pair of Z4000 VC ADSRs for The VCA and Filter FM.

The Sequential switches are reset to 8 step by the Circadian Rhythms.

The voice is quite simple: Z3000 sine wave > Tiptop Fold Processor (fold is modulated by a sine wave doepfer LFO and the offset is modulated by the horizontal 16 step sequence from Z8000 slewed by Make Noise Math) > Z2040

The bass drum is Tiptop BD808

Music by ANGLE & JOAO CESER

Actress: Denise Luzzi

QuantiZer is a creative melody composing module that uses cutting edge analog electronics and DSP to tune analog VCOs precisely into Western musical scales.

The front panel is packed with functions that makes it very playable and intuitive to use, with a layout that moves forward from the typical quantizer design.

At its center is a slider that can be set to play notes, add Portamento to an incoming sequence, transpose a sequence with in an octave range or transpose a sequence with in 5 octave range.

The 12 note keyboard can be set to play notes manually, add and subtract notes from scales, transpose a sequence as well as setup a variety of settings that define the quantizer behavior and sync with other modules.

Major and Minor keys are both built in to let you switch scales in a very playable way, making it pretty easy to explore musical progression. There are also 24 user scales ready to be filled up with your own custom scales.

A built in sketch pad records and plays back keys entered manually on the keyboard and slider in sync with external clock and reset signal, or Tiptop’s SyncBus which chains the QuantiZer recording function to the Circadian Rhythms time line for precise recording and playback.

Scale CV in can be set to switch between changing scales or transposing pitches using CV from sequencers.

Quantization can be set for free run or Trigger mode for even more interesting ways to interact with external sequencers.

Quantizer sets a new performance standard for Eurorack that offers incredibly stable CV quantization minimizing glitches on input, utilizes high precision temperature compensated 1V/Oct CV generation on output and features stunning conversion latency of less than half a millisecond.

QuantiZer can be set to process a wide variety of CV voltage input ranges, +/-5V CV from LFOs, bi-polar envelopes and such, or 0-10V / 0-5V standard CV from sequencers.

Continuing the tradition of advanced Tiptop digital modules, the QuantiZer Firmware running the digital brain is upgradeable via a USB thumb drive interface at its back allowing for continuous improvement and fine tuning of function and stability over time.

KiNK Tiptop Audio QuantiZer test 1

Published on Dec 15, 2016 kink303

"In this little session I`m feeding a quantizer with modulation voltages and gates can turn it into a pretty interesting squencer. Here I`m using the new QuantiZer by Tiptop Audio, feeding it with voltages from Intellijel Quadra (a loopable envelope) and I`m triggering it with Tiptop Audio Circadian Rhythms. The drums are Tiptop too, the oscillator is the Cloud Generator and the filter is Cwejman MMF-6. Funk phenomena!"

A COLLECTION OF EURORACK MODULAR JAMS ~ Make Noise, TipTop Audio, Mutable Instruments, OTO Machines

Published on Jun 28, 2017 once upon a synth

"Jamming and improvising on my eurorack modular synth. There are few different jams in this one. I ran the whole thing through an OTO Machines BAM for delicious reverb. The main sound sources are the TipTop Z3000 and One. I then feed those through the 2040 and VCF-74 filters. The Z3000 is also run through the Fold Processor. The main sequencer is the Z8000 which is first quantized with the Quantizer before being fed to control the Z3000. The Make Noise Tempi is driving the Z8000 and the Z4000 envelope generator which is turn is modulating the Z2040. The Make Noise Maths also helps to modulate the Fold Processor parameters. The drums and percussion sounds are a combination of the Peaks in drum mode and the One sampler.

Tiptop Audio's Z8000 Gets a New Look and Output Range Adjustment

TIPTOP AUDIO Z8000 MATRIX SEQUENCER from Tiptop Audio on Vimeo.

Tiptop Audio: Z8000 Basic Patches from Tiptop Audio on Vimeo.

Update: videos above added.

via Tiptop Audio

"The Z8000 Matrix Sequencer is a modulation source like no other: The 16 knobs of the Z8000 are accessed by ten sequencers with their own clock, direction and reset inputs. The ten sequencers are as follows:

Four 4 step CV sequencers on the horizontal.
Four 4 step CV sequencers on the vertical.
One 16 step CV sequencer on the horizontal.
One 16 step CV sequencer on the vertical.

The Z8000 can simultaneously modulate up to 10 CV parameters poly-rhythmically, with unprecedented motion complexity. One knob affects all 10 CV outputs! Imagine modifying 10 parameters from one knob. With it’s 30 gate and clock inputs and 10 CV outputs one can only imagine the possibilities, and all clock inputs can even be driven at audio rates. The Z8000 pairs well with the Trigger Riot and Circadian Rhythms and using it with the QuantiZer extends its capabilities as a high precision 1V/Oct note sequencer.

Introduced in 2017, a new version of the Z8000 maintains the original circuitry but adds output range adjustment switches on the back and Tiptop’s new colored look which help highlight the sections."

TIPTOP AUDIO QUANTIZER TUTORIAL ~ Eurorack module

Published on Jun 21, 2017 once upon a synth

"This is a tutorial of the TipTop Audio Quantizer eurorack module. A quantizer is a module which takes continuous control voltage and outputs a quantized 1V/Octave signal which you can patch into an oscillator. You can then configure custom musical scales so you can turn an LFO into an arpeggiator for example. The TipTop Audio Quantizer has a couple of unique features like a slider which you can assign to various parameters like octave or transpose. It also has a mini note recorder which you can use as a sketch pad to record and loop melodies. It also has a clock input which you can use to clock quantization to synchronize rhythmically."

deopfer LFO clocking a synthwerks PGM 4x4 output to deopfer sequential switch to get 8 steps (can get 16 but for this purpose 8 notes are plenty) CV out of the switch to the megawave.. out of megawave into CV in of bubblesound vcob.. audio = saw wave to tiptop Z2040 filter to intellijel linix VCA.

some modulation happens later via Livewire Vulcan Modulator and row 4 of the pgm 4x4.

this patch is just to show some of the quantizer scales in the quantizer ROM of the Megawave.

Sketchpad: Circadian Rhythms + QuantiZer.mp4

Sketchpad: Circadian Rhythms + QuantiZer.mp4 from Station 252 on Vimeo.

"Trying out the sketchpad function of the new Tiptop Audio QuantiZer. When the two are connected and synced via Syncbus it is possible to record CV sequences that will follow in length whatever is looped on the CR and by switching the loop off it is possible to "hang" on the current pattern and it's associated part of the recording on the QuantiZer. Trigger Riot is clocking the quantisation and triggers the synth's envelope from the same output: clock divided by 3 and by 1, I increase the 1's pulse width mid performance."
