Move vs Push - Controlling Ableton Live with the Move

video upload by Tum Sun

"Head-to-head comparison of the Move and the Push - who wins (and what do we learn along the way)? Not the Push 3 or the Push 2, but the original Push! Can the very first controller that ‪@Ableton‬ made beat their newest device, the Move? Should you even consider picking up the Move to use as a controller for Ableton Live?"

Ableton Move - Limited to Only One Track?

video upload by Tum Sun

Follow-up to Ableton Move - 12 Hidden or Missing Features

"I put together a short performance to demonstrate how much can be done with just one track, featuring the Drum Rack / Drum Sampler on the ‪@Ableton‬ Move. Imagine expanding this concept with multiple clips, additional Drum Racks, synths, samples, live instruments, etc. It really shows how powerful this little groovebox can be. I didn't even get into the panning and tone shaping I set up per pad, or the main track effects (no additional effects, mixing, or mastering added in post).

This lo-fi hip-hop beat is just one example, and I'm definitely not an expert in the genre, so comment below with links to some of your "limited" creations.✌️"

Ableton Move - 12 Hidden or Missing Features

video upload by Tum Sun

"Here are 12 things I found interesting in the first few days with the new Ableton Move groovebox. Some are tips, some are wishlist items, and some are possible secret functions that Ableton hid in the device - I'm not brave enough to open up my Move so we'll just have to wait and see.

Philip Glass Tribute - Piano, Bells, Organ, Cello

video upload by Tum Tum

"This is my Jamuary 2022 finale! This track was inspired by the Glass Piano by Spitfire audio which was sampled from the personal piano of Philip Glass. I tried to pay tribute in the contrasting duple/triple piano rhythms, the swelling 'pipe organ' (here played on my Alpha Juno synth), and the tuned percussion (here a kids bell set). I wish I could have performed the string part for the video, but I'm sans violin right now, so I used another Spitfire sample instrument. I didn't nail the moodiness of Glass but I'm feeling pretty triumphant about finishing Jamuary, so that was unavoidable.

At the beginning of January I had thought I might bow out mid-month but I'm glad I stuck it out for all 31 and I REALLY appreciate all of you who followed along. Definitely had fun and learned a lot, but it'll be nice to take a break ✌️

Live Electronic in Car with Microfreak and Circuit

video upload by Tum Tum

"This video is another challenge from Cuckoo, this time to perform in an unlikely space. I thought maybe I'd try to sequence all of this and have it running while I drove around my neighborhood but in the end I couldn't get a good camera angle that was also safe - this is with the camera strapped to the steering wheel! So I'm just sitting in my car port which is a little boring. Still, playing in this car is actually pretty functional. This is the first car I've had with an aux input, and there's clean USB power for both the Microfreak and the Circuit. So this may be the first time I've made some car compositions, but probably won't be the last.

Roland Alpha Juno, Waldorf Streichfett with Piano and Kaoss Pad

video upload by Tum Tum

"This track is all one take, and what I mean by that is I recorded the MIDI of an improvised piano part and then ran that out to a couple of synths after first passing the note info through some MIDI modifiers in Ableton. I also swapped the back half from a piano to a rhodes, just for fun. It's neat working with MIDI this way, as a creative tool rather than a linear record.

Akai AX60 Split Ambient Performance with Circuit Tracks

video upload by Tum Tum

"I ended up having a busy day which means this video is just one camera angle, no overdubs, and the same four chords. I think this track would work better about 10% slower and with some sort of B section, but I had no time to try it that day. It’s nice that the Akai AX60 has a syncable arpeggiator and a bi-timbral key-split mode. It’s clearly designed with performance in mind, if you couldn’t tell from all the panel controls.

Terry Riley Inspired Microfreak + Dysphonia Improvisation

video upload by Tum Tum

"This one is pretty out there, y'all. Definitely channeling Terry Riley. The chord oscillator on the Microfreak is a really interesting mod destination, you can get really unexpected results. Paired with the slightly more controlled Dysphonia, it becomes an ever-evolving combo, sort of East meets West Coast.

Ambient Circuit Tracks Dawless

video upload by Tum Tum

"Here's a little self contained ambient track made on the Circuit Tracks. I really like the sequencer on the Circuit, it's actually pretty great for this type of slow textural thing. But you know, there are only so many angles you can shoot of a little black box...

Alpha Juno & Circuit Tracks through Electrix Mo-Fx

video upload by Tum Tum

"It was a rainy day here when I put together this tune, first one in a while, so I wrote a rainy day track. I pulled out the Electrix Mo-Fx, a DJ multi effect from the year 2000. It's got delay, tremolo/pan, and phaser that all have tempo sync and a filter/crossover thing. Super handy, plus it has solid metal knobs.

This little tune reminds me of something from my teen years but I can't put my finger on it. Anybody recognize it?"

Circuit Tracks Electro-Pop with TX7 and Alpha Juno

video upload by Tum Tum

"This one is almost all on the Circuit Tracks. I sort of thought I'd be leaning heavier in the Circuit for Jamuary 2022, it's a really great little sketch pad and idea machine, but I think this I only ended up using it for a quarter of the tracks (obviously still quite useful). Additional sounds from the Yamaha TX7 and Roland Alpha Juno.

Dreadbox Dysphonia Filter FM - #jamuary 19 2022

video upload by Tum Tum

"I swear this isn't turning into a modular only channel. I've just been experimenting a lot and found this fun throaty sound using audio rate modulation on the filter frequency to pair with a short arpeggiated sequence from the Microfreak. All sounds live from the Dysphonia."

Euclidean Rhythms with Roboaux 3PT and Dreadbox Dysphonia - #jamuary 18 2022

video upload by Tum Tum

"I'm still putting this new 3PT module from Robaux through its paces. This time it's in the Euclidean rhythm setting, dividing the clock source into all the various triggers you're hearing. I did layer it up a bit so it wasn't all live but I'm still pretty impressed with how much these three modules are able to deliver."

Semi- Generative Ambient Modular with Dreadbox Dysphonia and Robaux 3PT - #jamuary 17 2022

video upload by Tum Tum

"This video was supposed to be a time lapse of me soldering together the 3PT from Robaux but there was some error and none of it got recorded. Oh well, the cycling LEDs on this module are mesmerizing enough."

Akai AX60 Analog Tape Strings - #jamuary 15th, 2022

video upload by Tum Tum

"This is an improvised take/tribute/rip of 'Adagio for Strings' by Samuel Barber. I think my first experience manipulating audio, of any audio production or experimentation, was taking a cassette of 'Adagio' and running it through my brother's guitar pedals.

This is played on the Akai AX-60 which I honestly bought just to to fix up and sell, but I'm tempted to keep it just for this Mellotron/Tape Strings/Flute sound I programmed. I just love how it sounds - exactly like that cassette 20 years ago.

(These videos were made each day of January 2022 and posted to Instagram on the day in the title and have since been uploaded to YouTube.)"

Arturia Microfreak & Clouds - #jamuary 11th 2022

video upload by Tum Tum

"Just a little improvisation structured around the touch plate/keyboard on the Microfreak. The paraphonic filter is being opened up by the pressure in my left hand, with a little bit being opening up via the envelope that's triggered by the rhythm from my right hand. Additionally the pressure CV is being sent out to the Clouds, adding some variation for the feedback."

Downtempo Lo-Fi Circuit Tracks with Alpha Juno, TX7, and Streichfett - #jamuary 4th 2022

video upload by Tum Tum

"Using the two internal synth engines and two sample tracks on the Novation Circuit Tracks along with a few layers from the Roland Alpha Juno 2, Waldorf Streichfett, and Yamaha TX7 (like a DX7 but desktop)."

Ambient Guitar and Piano with Vintage Yamaha Drum Machine #jamuary 3rd 2022

video upload by Tum Tum

"Just a simple chord progression through a few pedals, set to a slow march on the vintage and somewhat obscure Yamaha Ensemble Mixer, with a little piano to round it out. Leaning heavy on the Electro-Harmonix Superego+, the Old Blood Noise Endeavors Visitor, and the Boss RE-20."

You can find pics of a Yamaha Ensemble Mixer (one owned by Moby) posted here.

Elektron Analog Four (A4) MKI Live Dawless Jam - #jamuary 10th 2022

video upload by Tum Tum

"All sounds from the very powerful Elektron Analog Four (A4), original model. It's such a capable little box, I should use it more often!"

Vintage Digital Sampler 12 Track Performance - Yamaha AW16G - #jamuary 12th 2022

video upload by Tum Tum

"I'm using the excellent little Yamaha AW16G mixer as a sort of synthesizer, with an individual note from my Roland Alpha Juno 2 recorded into each track (every track with a fader, at least). I then did another pass playing the four sample pads, which each have a random pattern from the Juno recorded onto them. All sent through the Empress Reverb, Lo-Fi Blue setting."
