Jordan Rudess plays the Syner-V modern virtual synthesizer from Syntronik 2

video upload by

"Watch Jordan Rudess plays one of the classic synths of Syntronik 2 - the Syner-V. The Syner-V is based on the Digital Keyboards Synergy ii+ with its wide range of unique soundscapes and glassy, metallic tones. Although it did not officially use the term 'FM' due to Yamaha’s trademark, the Synergy did employ the same basic technology of the GS and DX series as well as the Synclavier FM synthesis."

Jordan Rudess plays the OSC-V modern virtual synthesizer from Syntronik 2

"Watch Jordan Rudess plays one of the classic synths of Syntronik 2 - the OSC-V. The OSC-V is based on the Classic analog-filtered digital monosynth sounds of the Oxford Synthesiser Company OSCar, a British classic. Sometimes called the 'British Minimoog,' the OSCar can sound deceptively analog and ultra-fat despite its digital oscillators."

The CATO captures the distinctive analog sounds of the Octave Cat SRM and its SSM filter. The pure-analog tonality of this synth is huge, and its modulation capabilities allow for truly unique and stylized timbres. Able to create gigantic Moog-style basses, the CAT can also go in its own sonic direction with its clever oscillator sync implementation.

Yamaha DX7 – Legendary electronic music, Jean Michael Jarre Oxygene and Vangelis Blade Runner Blues

Published on Feb 9, 2018 Power DX7

"This is a Yamaha DX7 music video of re-creating those legendary electronic music by two legendary musicians and composers, Jean Michael Jarre and Vangelis.

Jean Michael Jarre - Oxygene Part 2 (short version) – I created a short demo of the famous electronic music with a lot of analog synthesizers used in the original score. I used the DX7 MK1 to re-create analog bells, percussive sound, metallic sound and pitch bending sound. The original score also features a beautiful analog strings/pad sound, and I created the DX7 version that is equally beautiful. There is also another beautiful pad that used for a release sound for the saw percussive sound. What I love the most is the amazingly beautiful analog pad (I’m a sucker for beautiful pads/ strings). That is the reason why I love Oxygene Part 2, as it features this beautiful pad/ strings.

Vangelis - Blade Runner Blues (Full Length) – This project of re-creating this beautiful music/ sound track from the original (and the best) Blade Runner started by great friends of mine asking me about Yamaha CS-80 type lead sounds. Once I remembered that beautiful sound track in Blade Runner (watched many years ago), I decided to challenge myself to re-create the whole music using only the DX7 MK1. It took me many months of tweaking DX7 patches, listening to the sound track, transcribing music to Logic Pro X, recording many takes and mastering for the final version.

It features the famous Yamaha CS-80 lead, another great Yamaha CS-80 harmonic rich and gritty saw type pad (I just love pads and strings!), Yamaha GS-1 vibe, and a window rattler bass.
For viewing enjoyment, I put photos of city night scenes taken in the city of Melbourne in Australia (what a beautiful city with full of interesting features).

By re-creating those legendary electronic music, the DX7 proves itself that it’s an amazingly capable and versatile synthesizer (and really great at producing beautiful pads!!!).

So relax and enjoy the legendary electronic/ synthesizer music re-created by Yamaha DX7 MK1.

Note: All the DX7 sounds are Power DX7 original patches created using the DX7 MK1 only (no editor). Effects including reverb, chorus, flanger and delay are used for some patches. No equalizers are used for all of the DX7 patche."

Yamaha GS-2 Vintage FM synthesizer

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

You can find some demos of one posted here, and previous posts here.

"Up for sale is a (1) very rare Yamaha GS-2 synthesizer with weigted 73-keys wooden keyboard, GS-2 pedal unit, voice library for the GS-1 / GS-2, stand (which is the lid too), and power cable. There's a voltage selector on it and the serial number is: 1194.

Made in 1982 and still in good working condition, except the 'store function'. That needs attention. It sounds superb, very warm! The keyboard is great to play on, this synth deserves a good new home.

Cosmetically it's in fair condition for its age. There are some scratches on it, minor rusty spots, wear and tear and the tolex has small signs of use (see photo's)."

YAMAHA SK20 SN 2851

via this auction

"Yamaha's SK-series are combo-keyboards with synthesizer, organ, brass and string sections. The SK-10 was the first of the SK-series, released in 1979 - the SK-20, 30 and 50D followed in 1980, and the SK-15 in 1981, possibly as a replacement for the SK-10. The SK-10 is the only one in the series that does not incorporate a synth section, but has organ, brass and string sections that can all be played together for more interesting combinations. Very sturdy casing, 4-octave and fully polyphonic the features also include a leslie simulator, vibrato, attack and sustain rocker switches, a slider for 'brilliance' and a one-octave transpose switch. Not exactly feature-laden, but a lovely string synth sound. Interestingly, they are often referred to as 'analog', but in fact do have a digital section. Its organ has one of the early implementations of Yamaha's FM technology in a very limited form, concurrent with the GS-1/2 development platforms which eventually led to the DX series.

The ORGAN SECTION is available in all the SK series synthesizers. It offers a full range of stop levers from 1' to 16', percussion levers with adjustable decay, and controls for overall sustain, brilliance and decay. This gives you quite a lot to work with in the way of synthesis. The organ's sound is FM based and it sounds very B3 like. You can add a Vibrato and a noisy but good Tremolo to it. Its sound is all about the 70's era rock organ, especially with the Ensemble chorus effect in use. It also has a Leslie-speaker output around back.

The PRESET STRINGS section isn't very sophisticated and offers very limited editing capabilities. It is the string section though, that is worth aquiring this keyboard for. Very similar to the best of the string synths, (such as the Arp Solina/Omni or the Logan String Machine) it has a sound reminiscent of the opening of 'Oxygene' (J-M Jarre) or the lead line from 'Love Will Tear Us Apart' (Joy Division).

The SK20 adds the POLY-SYNTH SECTION: a 7-note polyphonic synthesizer with basic filter, pitch, envelope, and portamento controls. It features two (detuneable) oscillators per voice so it's good for thick pads. It lacks any bite whatsoever and, even in normal attack mode, has way too slow an envelope to be used for any bass or percussion sounds. But, the pads and strings you can get certainly shine and glitter like Bowie a-la Ziggy Stardust (especially when layered with the Strings section). It's like a good entry-level synthesizer. Basic and simple LFO, filters and ADSR envelopes. It has a built-in sustain and the Tremolo and Ensemble chorus effect also apply to this section."

Yamaha GS-1 Original FM Preset Synth For Sale

"This is a very rare Yamaha GS-1 FM Synthesizer. 1 of 100 ever made it's Yamaha's first FM synth. It powers up about 1/2 the time. Sustain seems to be constant. Vibrato isn't working. A few of the patch buttons don't work either."

Videos of a modded one just went up here.

"Briefly, FM digital synthesis enables the GS1 and GS2 to precisely recreate the harmonic structure of acoustically produced sounds, as well as many other sounds, by generating a brilliant range of harmonics "all at once". And all without the tedious and expensive drawbacks of other digital synthesizers."

Sounds great and plays nicely (nice keyboard action) [Sidenote: The previous owner told me that he aquired this unit from Bobby Caldwell (of "What you won't do for love" fame (remember him?), though I have no provenance to that effect] Apparently, he was a Yamaha endorsee in the 80's.
