Limaflo - Motomouth *Formant Explorations*

DivKidVideo
Published on Aug 7, 2017

"THIS JUST IN ... formants have taken over my case :S
Well not really, but the Motomouth from Limaflo is great! I'm not planning to do a full overview video with this one as it's not available after the initial Kickstarter (unless enough interest comes about to warrant a run) but I did want to share this patch.
This is just a general patch drone thing I had going but I have got a full patch breakdown exclusively available (very shortly) to patreon supporters. So watch out for that coming soon."

AJH Synth - Ring SM *PATCHES*

Published on Jun 12, 2016 DivKidVideo

"Just a patches video with no talking from me to predate a full overview coming in the future. Full patch notes from me then some points from Allan at AJH Synth he said I could share with everyone too.

PATCH NOTES - DUAL MELODIES

This patch is two triangle wave melodies sequenced by the Audio Damage Sequencer 1. Both oscillators are AJH Synth MiniMod VCOs. You first here both sequences are the Ring Mod’s X & Y can be sent through to the mixer. You then hear the Ring Mod output, then back to X input and the sub oscillators which create sine like (slightly skewed and imperfect - perfect for low end thickness but no muddiness). Final part of the patch is a mix of the various stages into a VCA which is the AJH Synth MiniMod VCA.

PATCH NOTES - SATURATED XYZ

This patch shows the saturated and X, Y and Z inputs of the Ring Modulator. The saturated is based on the Moog CP3 Mixer circuit. You can saturate any channel or build up saturation with multiple channels clipping. You have a sine wave and a triangle wave (one pitch modulated) going into the X and Y inputs on the Ring Modulator which come from the Sputnik Modular Dual Oscillator. The Z input is the Noise Engineering Loquelic Iteritas which has it’s pitch swept manually in part of the video.

PATCH NOTES - SAWMANIA

This patch uses three AJH Synth MiniMod VCOs all with the saw outputs going into the X, Y and Z input. You hear the X and X inputs and then both together before hearing the Ring Mod output with just the X and Y inputs to the Ring Mod. Then the X input and Z inputs mixed into the Ring Mod output as well (which is great for adding in weight back to the signal). Then the sub generators which you can hear are very clean compared to your standard square wave sub generators. The third saw wave is mixed into the Ring Mod circuit on the Z input before taking the final output into the AJH Synth MiniMod Transistor Ladder Filter which has it’s cut off modulated by a modulated envelope (attack and decay CV is modulated on the envelope for movement).

PATCH NOTES - WAVETABLES

You first hear the X input which is a modulated wavetable from Mutable Instruments Braids. Adding in the -1 octave sub you can hear that move around with the varying harmonics in the wavetable changing. Note no pitch changes happen through this patch. The changing sub is awesome for create moving low end that changes with the wavetables. Mixing in the -2 octave sub you can hear the thick imperfect sine tone of the subs. You then hear the Y input which is the Noise Engineering Loquelic Iteritas which has it’s morph and fold modulated before hearing the X and Y sent into the Ring Modulator. The moving subs and Ring Mod works great for added movement and extra grit in the sound. Taking out the subs and the Y input I then use the Z input which is an LFO from Mutable Instruments Tides. Tides has it’s frequency and shape modulated for evolving flutters and gestural LFOs. The patches plays out with various levels going into the Ring Mod and mixing in the subs and original X and Y inputs."

Behringer Neutron Testing

Published on Feb 10, 2018 DivKidVideo

1. Behringer Neutron Testing - Feature Jam
"Here's my first video of seven (to kick things off, more to come) with the Behringer Neutron. This is a little feature jam with the Korg SQ-1 sequencing the pitch and gate and a few eurorack modular drums mixed in for good measure."

2. Behringer Neutron Testing - Paraphonic VCO & Filter Workout
Here I have a Korg SQ-1 sending a 4 note sequence to the first Curtis CEM 3340 VCO and a 3 note sequence to the second VCO. This gives us some overlapping polymeric (not polymeter, that's conversation for another day) patterns. The VCOs sound great playing overlapping patterns then mixing through paraphonically into the filter/VCA/drive/delay.

3. Behringer Neutron Testing - Synth Drone
Here's a synth drone for the third video of seven from my time testing the Behringer Neutron. There's the BBD Delay, lots of modulation from the LFO and sample and hold as well as the two ADSR envelopes.

4. Behringer Neutron Testing - BBD Delay Workout
PLEASE NOTE - the final version has two BBD chips and a longer delay with less noise until much longer delay times. I'll have that unit coming soon to make more fulsome content.

In this patch from my time testing the prototype Neutron unit from Behringer I'm playing around with the BBD delay chips. The delay can be used completely standalone with input and output and also a CV input for the delay rate (it will with modulation make a great chorus). In the default signal path it comes at the end of the signal path after the overdrive.

5. Behringer Neutron Testing - Acid Patch
Here's an acid style patch with the Behringer Neutron. You can hear the filters snarl and raw character as well as the richness of the oscillators coming through. There's the output overdrive and BBD delay in play at points too.

6. Behringer Neutron Testing - Cosmic Synth FX
While these little teaser videos for the Behringer Neutron are coming to and end (one more video, the seventh uploaded this weekend) here's some Cosmic Synth FX making use of the patchbay and on board delay to create some more abstract and experimental drones and noises. Perfect "sample fodder" to record and cut up for more "conventional" uses as percussion or little noise and FX hits.

7. Behringer Neutron Testing - Sync, Drive & Character
With the sync mode between the oscillators you can get all sorts of overbowing, guitar feedback, plucked string like twang extra harmonics into the core sound on the Neutron before going through the filtering, drive, VCA and delay. So this video is just that, testing out the sync between two oscillators and playing around. It's also the last video in the 7 I made for test patches.

Superbooth 2018 - Abstract Data Event Boss, Octocontroller Updates, New Filter, Logic Boss & VCO

Published on May 4, 2018 DivKidVideo

"Justin from Abstract Data always has a great patch set up and a tonne of interactive modular action going on for rhythms, beats, basslines and modulation in not much space. We go through the upcoming new firmware for the ADE-32 Octocontroller, ADE-33 Event Boss which is a fantastic device for taking clocks and making patterns or taking patterns and making variations on patterns and then there's the new filter, logic boss and wave shaping VCO which sounds fantastic (I was lucky enough to test and early version).

Moog Island Walk-around - Superbooth16

Published on Apr 8, 2016 DivKidVideo

"A little rough and ready but for those that haven't seen here's a walk around the Moog Island that Moog created at Superbooth. Not just the cactus (or cacti is it?) laid out like Moog did at NAMM but also peppered with a few old GDR east German goodies from around the Funkhaus studios themselves.

What better than to soundtrack this with some drone, ambient soundscape type thing (knocked up from a few quick patches for the video)."

AJH Synth MiniMod Sample Hold & Slew // Everything you could want from S&H and more!

Published on Dec 13, 2018 DivKidVideo

"**TIMING INDEX / SECTIONS BELOW** Here's the wonderful Sample Hold & Slew from the MiniMod range by AJH Synth. It's really everything you could want from a sample hold as ... you also get track and hold, a great noise source with a clipping option and tonal/colour shift, a gated slew/glide/lag processor with slew time, linear or exponential slew shaping, options to slew up (rising) / down (falling) or both movements in voltages. The internal clock source is always present on the output even when clocking externally so when you slew that you have a handy shapeable bonus LFO. Last but not least there's a totally unique restrict feature that restricts the potential range of movements between steps without restrict the overall output range.

I tried to make this a real education/tutorial thing for sample and hold, noise sources, slew + track and hold so I hope it's a useful resource for learning about synthesis too.

Instruo - Scion // Modular Meets Leeds 2017

Published on Sep 7, 2017 DivKidVideo

"Here's the awesome new Scion module from Instruo. It's interfaces through a tens cable with a plant (as based on the MIDI Sprout device) and interfaces with the module. It's looking for changes in resistance and interfering with plant affects the signals but you can also play it from the touch capacitive plate on the panel or with a standard 3.5mm cable (plug in your output for a generative feedback based patch). The module creates notes (quantised, each with variable slew) across four voices based on the incoming signals and it also has a harmonic series mode to work with harmonic intervals as opposed to quantised musical intonation. It's a stunning bit of kit that was incredibly musical and interactive."

HEART RATE PWM // Modulation from your heart with the ADDAC 307

Published on May 6, 2019 DivKidVideo

"Control your modular with your heart rate LITERALLY and get some heart rate PWM / Pulse Width Modulation in your life. Literally like a direct heart to Nick Batt module in Eurorack.

The ADDAC 307 Heart Sensing module comes with a heart rate monitor you can connect to your finger or earlobe and you get your heart rate as a gate signal on the trigger output. You also get an envelop follower and inverted envelope follower style output which generates a slew/lag version of the gate. You can adjust rise and fall times, adjust amplitude and offsets and take the inverted and normal version outs around your system."

AJH Synth Glide + Noise // busboard pitch distribution, slew/lag and noise sources for Eurorack

Published on Dec 3, 2018 DivKidVideo

"**TIMING INDEX / SECTIONS BELOW** ok so this is a simple one, easy to overlook and underrated I feel. Like all AJH this just work really well. It's a basic linear glide that can glide up, down or both up and down (normal function for most slews), there's a great hold function to halt signals passing with either gate high or low (behaviour set on a jumper), it can send or receive CV from your bus boards in the case (yes the CV / gate lines on the power connectors that go unused 99% of the time), and there's 3 noise types. Simple, but highly effective and now with a recent update it's skiff friendly, responds to negative CVs and has a range of ~14 octaves ... yes 14! I'm known to go on about how much I dislike people going on about big over the top octave tracking ranges as musical lines don't span 8 octaves or more BUT in this case we're talking about going well into modulation ranges accurately and audio so I won't be ranting here! :)

TIMING INDEX / SECTIONS

00:12 Patch previews

00:38 Function / features run down

01:03 Demo patch - a wider patch using noise for percussion, glide for pitch and some other new AJH modules for added spice.

03:36 Glide - up, down, both, linear slew,

04:55 CV bus on the power boards and distributing pitch around your system cable free!

05:54 Hold - what is it, jumper settings etc - interrupting sequences for added performance and sequence freezing.

07:22 Audio wave shaping - YES using this for audio manipulation, weird ... probably ... cool though? Yes! Slew works as a basic low pass filter but audio rate hold manipulation adds some great overtones.

09:27 Slewing (or lagging or gliding) modulation signals. Turning square LFOs into triangles, ramps and clipped saws.

10:52 Noise types - a look and listen at the red, white and pink noise.

13:28 Using the Glide + Noise to mimic original Moog Minimoog Model D behaviour with the interrupted / gated glide on the keyboard."

Erica Synths - PICO DSP

Published on Nov 22, 2016 DivKidVideo

"Here's the awesome PICO DSP from Erica Synths. I start with a male vocal counting to 20 (cheers to Taylor Deupree for that tip it's really obvious to hear what FX are doing to a basic spoken voice) then some drums then some poly synth stuff. Finally I built a patch with the PICO RND and DRUMS modules to finish. It's a stunning little module to add some splashes of colour and space to things. Grab yourself one :)"

Michigan Synth Works SY0.5 - Pearl Syncussion Clone in Eurorack

Published on Nov 19, 2018 DivKidVideo

"**TIMING INDEX / SECTIONS BELOW** Here's the new Michigan Synth Works faithful recreation of the classic synth percussion unit the Syncussion from Pearl. Modern equivalents of all the original components are still available so this is very close to the original. Lots of drum sounds on board, I've had some great punchy kicks, longer tom like tones, alien FM cowbell action. To me the unit feels like one big sweet spot, hard to make a bad sound on which can be as rare thing.

Rebel Technology - Mix 02 & Mix 03 (killer new mix series with Mix 01-04)

Published on Nov 27, 2017 DivKidVideo

"I'm highly impressed with the Rebel Technology mix series and having the Mix 02 and Mix 03 (pssst I'll be giving this away in the not too distant future watch my channel for updates) here has got me really curious about the Mix 01 (matrix mixer) and Mix 04 (16 VCAs in a matrix). It's high quality, clean, bleed free mixing in a great layout and I love the idea of an expandable mixer that you can grow with your system."

Ambient Modular at 6000ft // DivKid live on Mt. Rainier

video upload by DivKidVideo

"Back in 2019 I was over in Seattle, Washington, USA for 'Velocity' an event by Modular Seattle & Patchwerks. They had a warm up show and last minute encouraged me to borrow some modules and a case, put a system together and play at the show. This was good as it led into my talk on zonal approaches to live modular systems for the main event Velocity. While travelling around and still with the system some days later we decided to take the rig up a snow capped mountain and perform up there. Freezing cold, shivering hands and a beautiful view!

An exclusive 15 page PDF is available for Patreon supporters that highlights all the patching, my zonal approach, modules used, the history of my approach to live minimal ambient modular and more. Head to https://bit.ly/DK-patreon if you'd like to gain access to a great community and exclusives.

A huge thanks to D B Pawlan who when we were driving around Tacoma and Seattle Washington said 'we should take the modular up there' and pointed to the huger Mt. Rainier that was always in the view. The clip at the end of this video is David driving back up to near where we were if you're curious.

This system was quickly put together in the days leading up to the surprise performance with modules, case and cables borrowed from Bradley Millington (Modular Seattle) and David Pawlan (Wabisabi). A huge thanks to them for facilitating and encouraging a performance on a new system and for being so awesome with me pulling modules out of their set ups to do this. I used the same system for my talk and presentation at Velocity 2019 as well as for another performance live at the Chapel."
