A drone for Disquiet Junto 440: scales scrapped off a fish

Published on Jun 6, 2020 junklight

"I take part in the Disquiet Junto project from time to time. I find it pushes me into places I don't normally take my music when given constraints.

This week the instruction was simple 'There is just one step: Throw off the shackles of A440 and make a piece of music in your favorite alternate tuning.' I'd coincidently been reading about Alvin Lucier and had already bought a cheap SDR because of his interest in radio so this seemed the direction to take.

The piece when I played it turned into being a drone

The code for the Norns instrument is here https://github.com/junklight/swv and you can find the Crow script here https://github.com/junklight/swv"

Nijuman no Borei

Published on Apr 18, 2020 junklight

"Been meaning to upload this for ages and then I noticed my namesake had uploaded his version.....

Rescore of the very powerful film by Jean-Gabriel PĂ©riot called Nijuman no borei (200,000 phantoms) - the rescore was done for the Dark Outside and rather brilliantly the various versions were all projected onto a screen next to a river with headsets to listen to the soundtracks

you can see my namesakes take on it here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JiAVi..."

late ward (audio only)

Published on Apr 10, 2019 junklight

"Using field recordings from my time in hospital. The ward was never silent - always beeps and bleeps of machines watching us all & I wanted to use those sounds in some way.......

On youtube because I needed it 'for a thing' :-)

You can hear some of the music I made while actually on the ward here

Techno Experiment: eurorack, digitakt, XTk

junklight

"I'm working on a new project which is techno based (and probably won't be released under the "junklight" moniker either) but it's been a while since my (possibly misspent) techno soaked 20's so finding a groove again.

The ending leaves a bit to be desired"

junklight Set from Lines Community live event (10 May 2020)

Published on May 10, 2020 junklight

"The Amazing lines community put on a live event over this weekend & I took part. Got to say livestreaming is a lot more nerve-wracking when you *know* you have an audience :-)

I went with a more maximal setup to give me more options and places to go - and playing this back I realise I could have played for a lot longer. My do a few more sessions on this rig before tearing it down. Feels like I. could do with a hardware mixer too - push is nice but too much mode switching.

The modular is being driven using a Monome Teletype script that acts a bit like the Double Knott, Gesture Arcade setup -in this case using the TXi knobs to generate the patterns - buttons would be nicer but needs must.

The looping is driven entirely by my forthcoming app (I release software as "Pagefall" ) using only the "Fripp soundscaping" side of things although I've got rate quantisation turned on too which I thought worked nicely on the loops (although I was a bit heavy handed a couple of times switching rate - as I was on one of the piano notes at the end -nerves and hands shaking !!! :-) )

Thank you to the Lines community for running this and go and check out some of the other streams - there was so much good stuff being played."

junklight Live Stream

Published on Apr 1, 2020 junklight

"At least no dogs joining in today! been a busy day so just setup something simple. Been listening to lots of Andrew Chalk over the last few days because he's started uploading his stuff to bandcamp (check it out!) and also Bulbils - both are likely an influence."

sequencers & synths: (mostly) Make Noise Eurorack, Digitakt , XTk

Published on Aug 3, 2018 junklight

"had a re-jig of the old eurorack - see if I can get some new perspectives. Then got it all creaking and groaning and took it out for a test drive. It's not big. It's not clever. But it was a lot of fun!"

Eurorack Rhythms & MPE Strings - Kria, Eurorack, Norns with Seaboard

Published on Oct 7, 2018 junklight

"After the last couple of weeks fairly minimal setups I felt like making something a bit more maximalist....

Here we have rhythm & backing provided by the modular sequenced by Kria on the Ansible with Norns on lead duties with a patch I made designed to be controlled by the seaboard

(you can find the patch here if you are interested https://github.com/junklight/misc/tree/master/dust)

There are 5 voices coming from the modular - Mysteron, Two channels of DPO via the LxD on percussion duties, an STO/Wasp voice sequenced by Rene clocked via Kria and the morphogene"
