EVENTIDE H90 HARMONIZER

Setting the new bar that any powerful multi-effects processors should look up to, Eventide's H90 Harmonizer pedal flawlessly covers effects ranging from delays, pitch-shifting, and more, all with the ability to run two algorithms at the same time. Building on the platform established by the H9, H90 is the most powerful pedal Eventide has ever produced. You could think of H90 as two H9s in one pedal, but it also packs in numerous new effect algorithms, routing options, and performance features that transcend the capabilities of traditional guitar pedals. And with a completely overhauled screen-based interface, H90 is a pedal that you'll always want to be tweaking.

H90 offers a total of 62 different effects algorithms: 52 returning from the H9, and ten all-new effects taking advantage of H90's impressive processing power. Among these, the Polyphonic algorithm sticks out—it makes use of Eventide's proprietary Spectral Instantaneous Frequency Tracking technology, or SIFT for short. The result is stunning, as even the most dissonant chords and timbres are shifted with perfection. Regardless of your chosen effects, you can use two of H90's algorithms simultaneously, which means you can stack delay into reverb, tremolo into chorus, or any other combination that your heart desires.

With two effects algorithms available at once, H90 also provides incredible flexibility in arranging signal flow. Series and Parallel routings are easily achieved, but even more possibilities are available with external effects. Unlike most pedals, H90 has four inputs and four outputs, with the secondary pairs available for use as two mono inserts or a single stereo loop. Insert loops may be placed anywhere on the effects path, whether it's before, after, or in between H90's algorithm blocks. Alternatively, head into the Global Settings and enable dual mode, which decouples the algorithms into their own independent signal paths, allowing you to set up four-cable method connections with your amp, process two stereo instruments independently, or any other niche audio scenario.

H90's effects and audio routing is only part of the story though, for this pedal sports incredible control capabilities. In Perform mode, you can assign effects parameters to macro-style HotKnobs, instantly recall settings with scene-like HotSwitches, or keep a handful of essential controls at your disposal by assigning them to the QuickKnobs beneath the screen. But if that's not enough for you, H90 also offers two controller ports for expression pedals and auxiliary footswitches, as well as MIDI control over USB-C or traditional 5-pin DIN. Nearly every aspect of an effect may be assigned to an external controller, along with numerous global H90 parameters.

Along with all that you can do on H90 itself, Eventide also offers a companion H90 Control app to configure the pedal from a computer. But the app also provides a graphic interface for quickly adjusting any parameter in real-time, as well as helpful preset and program backups. Considering how powerful it is, calling H90 a pedal almost seems like a disservice. But like the H9 and the other Harmonizer rack units that came before, H90 is a rare instance of a jack-of-all-trades and master of all when it comes to effects processing.

When creating it, I had a goal to make a compact and powerful tool for filtering signals.
First thing - I tried to keep the bouncy sound of great-grandfather in the face 292, the second thing is to add a completely new resonance circuit, also driven by vactrols, in which the resonance would have a large amplitude at medium and low frequencies and decrease towards high frequencies, in order to avoid the frequent case of uneven auditory perception of a high level of resonance.

The REG (regeneration) knob was also added, which gives additional functions, at the minimum value of this knob, the filter does not color the signal, and works like a VCA, as well as reducing the attenuation of vactrols, at intermediate values it reduces low frequencies in the resonance circuit and allows you to finetune both the character of the resonance and the sound of the filter.

The filter has two operating modes HP and LP. (HP mode 6db/oct)

When creating it, I had a goal to make a compact and powerful tool for filtering signals. Osi-Op : Stereo Patches : Vaemi (Eurorack)

"Hello everyone Today we will be making stereo patches with Osi-Op. There are actually many ways to do this. We will now look at ways we can do it with just oscillators.
First of all, the 1st oscillator will be staying in the middle and playing the lowest frequency sound. The 2nd oscillator is panned to the left channel and the 3rd oscillator to the right channel. If we specify the amount of pan, we can say that 75% left and right panned. Apart from the random differences of the oscillators, we can say that changing the Waveshape Output with PWM settings and sometimes giving the opposite movement as a mirror of a movement to two opposite channels creates a very nice stereo image. While doing all these with basic waveforms, I also tried to create small differences between the right and left channels from time to time with Thru Zero FM. Now let's hear the results together.

"Osi-OP, which we regard as an analog reflection of the new era of digital electronic music, is an analog and voltage-controlled oscillator module. It was designed in Eurorack format and it has a width of 14hp. The fact that it has Thru Zero FM Input and a Waveshape Output, which can be used for morphing, are two of the most important features of this product. From a first impression, it may look like an oscillator that is appropriate for subtractive synthesis; however, we actually designed it to be used for additive synthesis. Thanks to Thru Zero FM, this oscillator can regard oscillators with Sine Wave as analog operators. You can even prepare your synthesizer patch without using the classic subtractive resonant filter. The most important aspect of Thru Zero FM is that there is no tune drift when you increase the modulation rate. For this reason, Thru Zero attenuator (TZ FM potentiometer) can almost be used like a filter itself. the frequency of the second oscillator acting as FM (operator) according to the frequency of the 1st oscillator giving the fundamental frequency; must be set in harmonic degrees of the fundamental frequency. But at these settings the tonality can remain in and be musical. In addition to Square, Saw, Triangle, and Square Sub oscillator outputs, it has a Sine Wave Output, which was designed with JFET transistors and has a very low distortion rate, and a Waveshape Output, which was designed with Sine-Triangle and can be used for morphing. It also has a Wave Shape Input. It is connected to this input via the Triangle Wave circuit board inside. Sine Wave is fixed on Wave Shape but you can forward it to the other WS Input by patching other waveforms, and you can morph between two waveforms. The pulse width of the Square Wave can be adjusted. The same knob is the morphing knob of the Waveshape Output. Since the oscillator has tempco, there is a 1V/OCT calibrated CV Input that is sensitive to heat. It can perfectly stay in tune up to 3.5 octaves. In addition, for FM, there are two separate CV Inputs, Exponential and Thru Zero. While Exponential FM CV Input can take all types of DC and AC voltages, Thru Zero FM CV Input can only be used for AC audio rate signals. Also, when you enter a waveform on Thru Zero FM CV Input, oscillators are soft-synced automatically. With 1V/OCT CV Input, you can adjust the frequency of the oscillator; and with Exponential FM CV Input, you can easily add an LFO or Envelope Generator. Square Wave Sub OSC Output, which is completely synced with fundamental frequency and can give an octave lower than the fundamental, will help you a lot to create strong modern synth-bass sounds. It is made with NOS IC. When the oscillator is FM modulated, the Sub OSC never gets negatively affected by this modulation; and it can maintain giving the frequency clearly. You can also switch the oscillator to the LFO mode. You can create subtractive syntheses by using two or more of these oscillators or by mixing these waveforms. The main reason for us to design this oscillator is, as its name shows, to enable the creation of complex FM patches and sounds by using 2-3 or more of these oscillators, just like Operator FM. While Thru Zero FM increases the modulation, it can maintain giving the same frequency without losing the adjusted frequency; and you can add harmonics to the sound musically. "The Korg Lambda is a fully polyphonic 48-key preset synthesizer, and this example is very well-kept and thoroughly tested.

The Lambda ES-50 features two banks of sounds. Percussive (Electric Piano, Clavi, Piano, Harmonics) and Ensemble (Brass, Organ, Choir, Strings I, Strings II). These presets are all available simultaneously, ideal for thick layering, and each key is articulated independently (ensuring none of the "note stealing" pervasive in synths with fewer voices).The Percussive sounds have a fast attack and variable decay envelope, and the Ensemble sounds have both preset and variable attack/release envelopes.

The Lambda uses divide-down technology with three oscillators that are mixed and filtered using fixed circuits to create the preset sounds. The control panel boasts controls for basic low-pass filtering of the Percussive and Ensemble tones, and each bank of sounds has its own dedicated Volume slider and Tone knob. There is also a control for "click" (used to add attack to the EP sound) and a filter cut-off control for the Brass sound, which has its own paraphonic filter - tuned to give a slightly resonant peak to the sound, and with its own preset filter envelope.

An Octave switch puts the keyboard in regular or Octave Down mode. The three oscillators can be detuned to thicken the sound further, and analog chorus can be independently applied to the Percussive and Ensemble sections. The joystick acts as a pitch bend control, doubling as a sweep control for the chorus. Vibrato can be switched off the Ensemble sounds, and Percussive sounds feature a variable Tremolo and a Sustain switch that turns Decay into a Release."

The Lambda ES-50 features two banks of sounds. Percussive (Electric Piano, Clavi, Piano, Harmonics) and Ensemble (Brass, Organ, Choir, Strings I, Strings II). These presets are all available simultaneously, ideal for thick layering, and each key is articulated independently (ensuring none of the "note stealing" pervasive in synths with fewer voices).The Percussive sounds have a fast attack and variable decay envelope, and the Ensemble sounds have both preset and variable attack/release envelopes.

"My history with Oberheim runs deep. Probably the most important synthesizer for me was the Oberheim OB-8. I connected deeply with its melancholic and midnight music sounding tone which matched very well what I was doing with INHALT at the time. But never to be beguiled by softer emotions, the flick of the unison switch instantly took the OB-8 into an aggressive "body" music. It was the perfect writing tool due to the even tone across all octaves and the fact that its intrinsic musicality was unavoidable. Around the time I got the OB-8 I also got a vintage 2 Voice (thanks for restoring that one Chok) and both were heavily used on many records that I made. Those were my MVP's for many years.

When I received the call from my colleagues at Sequential that not only was a new Oberheim in the works, but that it was to be THE Oberheim, I couldn't wait for the beta testing and sound design to start. And when the prepro unit arrived, I knew that the newly reborn and official Oberheim company, in tandem with the team at Sequential, created something incredible. Something so comprehensive, deep, detailed, featured and yet immediate and simple, with no possibility of making a bad sound. Every sound I made sounded exactly as it should, and they ALL embodied that unmistakable Oberheim sound. That magic that is often imitated but never accomplished. Until now.

I'm not going to get into specs, those have been already covered everywhere, but I will say this: as someone that has used all of the "big" Oberheims, and that has made many records in commercial studios with the OB-8 and a vintage 2 Voice, I can definitively say that this Oberheim does all of those sounds and more. Its charisma changes from filter to filter and it seamlessly traverses from X, Xa to 8 with the Page 2 voice offset and vintage knob, but it ALWAYS sounds like the genuine Oberheim that it is. This incredible team, that I've had the pleasure of working with, has created something that might possibly be the ultimate polyphonic analog synthesizer. And I can't wait to use it on the many upcoming projects at Infinite Power Studios.

This is a recording I made of many of the patches I created for Oberheim and the shipping factory library that will come with the synth.

Please note, the OB-X8 in the video is a prototype unit and I recorded this with a beta firmware. As such, while the synth was largely done there were some changes both to the panel and to the OS that are in the final shipping version (obviously). The OB-X8 was recorded straight into Pro Tools HD and no post processing or fx were added. What you're hearing is the raw synth."

"Oberheim has released a new synthesizer--the first in many decades--the OB-X8. It is a faithful recreation of all three of the classic OB-series synthesizers in one: the OB-X, the OB-Xa, and OB-8. It is an incredible synth.

In this video, you will hear a bunch of presets I created for the OB-X8. Some of my sounds will be included factory with the OB-X8 while most of these presets will appear in a presets pack I will release soon (check www.j3po.net for the release of my official sound bank). This particular unit is an early prototype with non-production knobs. The final production units will look slightly different.

It is important to note that the OB-X8, like the original OB's from back in the day, does NOT contain any onboard effects. In this video, I used some external reverbs and delays to give certain presets the ambience and resonance they deserve. Light compression and limiting was applied for the purpose of uploading to YouTube and balancing the sounds."

Oberheim Returns to Operations and Releases Its First New Synth in 35 Years

San Francisco, CA – May 9, 2022 – In a momentous industry development, Oberheim Electronics, one of the most venerated names in synthesizer design, has announced its return to operation to meet the rising global demand for its instruments.

Today, the company is launching its first new product, the OB-X8: an eight-voice polyphonic analog synth that combines all of the key features of the legendary OB-X, OB-Xa, and OB-8 products from the 1980s – including all the original presets that gave them their signature sounds.

“I wanted to come back strong with a new design that brings together the sounds of the greatest instruments from across the OB range, together with the distinctive sound and styling of those synths,” said Tom Oberheim. “But we took it even further. You can now combine the various OB voice architectures in ways that produce unique and interesting new sounds and capabilities.”

Originally founded by Tom Oberheim in 1969, Oberheim Electronics created ground-breaking products that fueled the electronic music revolution throughout the 1970’s and early 1980’s. After ceasing operations in 1985, these instruments attained near-mythical status, with highly prized vintage models selling for many times their original price on the secondhand market.

Since that time, Tom Oberheim had created a handful of limited-production instruments and co-designs with various partners under other names. But in a recent significant development, he regained control of the Oberheim trademarks and IP, and now, in partnership with Focusrite PLC, has decided to once again introduce new products under the Oberheim brand name for first time in more than 35 years.

“I’ve always had a very optimistic outlook on our industry and the future in general. I felt that one day, when the time was right, Oberheim would return. A big part of this was the fact that so many musicians have contacted me over the years to ask how to get hold of an original Oberheim. So when I finally reacquired the Oberheim name, it was clear that the time was finally here,” said Oberheim.

The catalog of artists associated with the original products is long, and includes innovators like Prince, Van Halen, and Herbie Hancock. For many, it was much more than just an instrument. A handful of A-list artists such as Trent Reznor, creative force behind Nine Inch Nails, and Golden Globe, Academy Award, and Primetime Emmy-winning composer got pre-release previews. “When I was shown the new OB-X8, I was immediately impressed with the forensic level of detail that went into its design and the respect for its lineage,” remarked Trent. I will be making room in my studio for one and I’m excited more people will be able to experience this classic instrument.”

Creating a new company out of thin air was no small feat. “I’m excited to work with my old friend and audio industry innovator Marcus Ryle, along with some other members of the original Oberheim team again,” said Tom. “And thanks to an exclusive partnership with Focusrite group company Sequential LLC, we have the ability to design, manufacture, distribute, and support new instruments on a global scale.”

For Marcus Ryle, one of the inventors behind the ADAT, the QuadraSynth, and Line 6 guitar amps and effects, this represents closure of sorts: “Synths were my first love and the reason I entered this industry. Tom hired me when I was 19, and I feel lucky to have been a part of the Oberheim design team during its glory days. Now, a whole new chapter in the story of analog synthesizer-based music is about to get written.” Dave Smith, founder of Sequential and himself a legendary figure in synth history, also collaborated with Marcus (an Oberheim team member from the 1980s) and Tom to create the new product. “We’ve already developed other interesting design ideas with Tom for follow-up products that will allow us to take Oberheim into the future as a synth brand,” commented Smith. “It’s a very exciting time to be a musician.”

The OB-X8 eight-voice analog synthesizer will be available at the end of June with a US MAP of $4,995.

In 2021, during the release of OB-E®, we were contacted by Marcus Ryle on behalf of Tom Oberheim. Marcus is a co-founder of Line 6® but also a former Oberheim Developer who contributed to the OB-Xa, DSX, DMX, OB-8, Xpander and Matrix 12. Via Marcus, OB-E had found its way to the ears of Tom Oberheim and they were both impressed enough to suggest a collaboration to refine the instrument and release an update carrying their full endorsement.

Working under the guidance of Tom and Marcus, we further enhanced OB-E, Refining the Detune feature and adding a new Vintage knob, which dials in more realistic musical inaccuracies in line with the original instrument for a truly authentic 8-Voice experience.

The 8-Voice is not simply eight identical SEMs put together. The interaction of those 8 independent, and slightly different Synthesizer Expander Modules, plays a major role in making the 8-Voice’s sound special and the injection of these authentic inaccuracies into each of the eight SEMs in OB-E takes it to another level.

"The Polyphonic Ensemble P was one of KORG's first polyphonic instruments. Instead of using divide down oscillator technology to achieve full polyphony, the PE-1000 is one of a very few paraphonic (or polyphonic) synths from the 1970s which has a seperate oscillator per key, if not the only one, which makes it sound richer since detuning between octaves is possible (that's what the Pitch Expand knob does). It offers seven preset sounds including String, Pipe Organ, Brass, Piano, Electric Piano, Harpsichord and Clavichord. An eighth preset called Control is basically a free synth mode with a selection of square or sawtooth waveforms."

Boldly defying convention, Casiotone CT-S1000V does what no other keyboard can do: speak or type your lyrics into the free Lyric Creator app for iOS/Android, transfer them to CT-S1000V and play the keys to hear your words come alive. Choose from multiple vocalist models and adjust age, vibrato, portamento and other parameters in real time. It can produce choirs, robotic sounds, vocoder-like textures and more. You can even create a custom vocalist based on an audio recording.

Casiotone CT-S1000V features 61 full-size touch responsive keys in a sleek, stylish case that weighs less than ten pounds. The easy-to-read LCD display and intuitive controls give you everything you need to perform and create. Use the pitch bend wheel and modulation knob to add natural (or supernatural) expression to your playing, and use the two assignable knobs to tweak EQ, filter, effects and many other settings on the fly.
