A free update for Bengal and Live 11 users.
Bengal 2.0 adds MPE and small usability enhancements.
Max for Cats crafts Software Instruments, Effects, MIDI devices, Sound Design and Samples for Ableton Live.

Combining the textural intricacy of FM with the freeform approach of a modular system, Bengal is a sound designer’s dream with its four operators, eight voices of polyphony, six audio effects and a flexible modulation architecture centred on an interactive virtual patchbay.

Bengal is a semi-modular synth, meaning that although its component modules (operators, filters, etc) are all fixed, they can be patched together in a huge range of configurations in the giant Patch panel at the bottom. Connect square output sockets to round input sockets by dragging virtual patchcords between them – it couldn’t be easier. Bengal is also eight-voice polyphonic, so it’s just as at home blasting out huge chords as it is one-finger basslines.

Serious FM

Each of Bengal’s four operators generates its waveform using a bank of 20 editable sine wave partials or a wavetable – over 40 are included, and external samples can be imported by dragging and dropping them directly into the GUI. Independent ADSR envelopes with Curve shaping and optional Looping are also in place for every operator, along with Feedback controls for really making them scream. The modulator/carrier routing is chosen from a selection of six FM algorithms, giving access to a variety of sonic starting points right out of the gate.

Dual filters

Bengal gives you not one but two multimode resonant filters. Filter 1 offers a choice of five switchable types – Moog-style ladder Lowpass, regular Lowpass, Highpass, Bandpass, Notch and Comb (with adjustable bipolar Feedback) – as well as Drive and wet/dry Mix controls for dialling in analogue-flavoured saturation and parallel processing, respectively. Filter 2 can be placed after Filter 1 in the signal flow or fed in parallel with it, and morphs smoothly between Lowpass, Bandpass, Highpass and Notch types.

Wild at heart

Modulation is key to Bengal’s architecture and sound. Running from 0.1Hz to speeds in the audible range, the two LFOs serve as regular parameter modulators or additional FM sources, while both the six-segment Breakpoint envelope and ADSR envelope can be looped and curved. The eight-step sequencer’s no slouch, either, outputting MIDI notes or modulation data, and featuring scale snapping, swing, and randomisation of pitch and velocity.

For even more movement, Bengal’s four Modifiers let you mess with its modulation signals in various ways, including smoothing, scaling, applying mathematical functions, and four-way mixing. There are also six audio effects onboard – reverb, delay, distortion, chorus, limiting and stereo widening – for processing and polishing prior to the final output.

Patching playground

With more than 50 modulation source parameters and 60 targets available, Bengal makes assigning the two easy and creatively rewarding with the Patch panel. Simply drag virtual cables from sources to targets as you see fit – each connection point can accept multiple cables at once, so you can really go to extremes!

Max for Cats - MSE Synthesizer System

Published on Nov 9, 2017 max forcats

Follow-up to the teaser posted here.

Some details via sonicbloom:

"The MSE Synthesizer System consists of three components: the synth module, the Quad, four of the MSE synths stacked together, and the SEQ8, a step sequencer.

The MSE Synthesizer module is a small but very powerful and versatile high quality synth. It can be played in mono mode or 8 voice polyphonically.

Mono or 8 voice poly mode
Glide/Pitchbend
2 oscillators (saw/pulse with PW)
Oscillator sync for pulse wave
Multimode state variable filter with LP, notch, HP and BP
2 LFOs with several waveforms, sync or free running
2 ADS envelopes
A sub and noise oscillator
Several modulation targets

The big Quad is four of the MSE synths stacked together and each MIDI note will sequentially play one of the four MSE modules - just like the old 1975 Four Voice Synthesizer from Oberheim. Each module can have it's own key split and can be programmed fully independently. A Unison mode will play them all together for ultra-phat bass or lead sounds.

4 MSE modules
Keysplit for each MSE
Individual glide for each MSE
8 oscillators
Oscillator sync for pulse wave
4 multimode state variable filters with LP, Notch, HP and BP
8 LFOs with several waveforms, sync or free running
8 ADS envelopes
4 sub and noise oscillator
Several modulation targets

And finally, the SEQ8 is an analogue style step sequencer with 8 steps, swing, integrated MIDI scaling and Map function. The pattern can be transposed with incoming MIDI notes. This sequencer can be used with any synth, be it software or external hardware synths.

Sync or free running
Key transpose
Randomise for each row
1- 8 note steps
1- 8 octave steps
1- 8 velocity steps
1-8 map steps for free parameter mapping with smoothing
Swing
Note scaling
Direction: FWD (forward), BWD (backward), BAF (back and forth), ALT (alternate), RND (random)
Step mutes"

Pallas - Semi-Modular Synthesizer by Max for Cats

Published on Jun 21, 2017 max forcats

via https://www.ableton.com/en/packs/pallas/

"Max for Cats’ latest creation brings the versatility of a semi-modular interface to the world of analog-modelling synthesis. Built around a flexible virtual patchbay, Pallas gives users immense control over a wide range of bold and unique sounds.

Pallas is a Max for Live device that has been specifically designed to model all the grit, character, and charm of authentic analog sounds. Featuring eight-voice polyphony, Pallas is powered by three versatile oscillators. The device's main two oscillators allow users to mix up to four waveforms (sine, triangle, square, and sawtooth, and an additional noise generator), while the third oscillator is a wavetable-based signal generator that can also be used as an additional LFO for modulation purposes.

Pallas uses the same modulation framework as Bengal (Max for Cats' powerful semi-modular FM synthesizer) and provides many opportunities for users to sculpt their sounds: extensive envelope settings, two multimode resonant filters (with drive and morph functionality), two LFOs (one with morphable saw-triangle waves, pulse width, and phase retrigger), a ring modulator, and six native audio effects including delay, distortion, reverb, wavefold, frequency shift, and chorus. In addition, Pallas also includes a flexible eight-step sequencer that can be used as a signal modulator.

For those who like to dig deeper, Pallas' semi-modular capabilities make this Max for Live device's sonic possibilities practically limitless. Featuring a comprehensive virtual patch panel, users can create any number of custom signal and modulation chains simply by stringing virtual patch cords from square "output" sockets to round "input" sockets, making it easy for even beginners to have fun and get creative with Pallas' modular components. In addition, the Packs features a large and carefully crafted Preset library that can provide a useful starting point when crafting new sounds.

Like Bengal, Pallas also features a visual control panel at its center. Switchable between three modes (Scope, Phase, and Spectrum), the visual panel gives users another way to see exactly what they are creating and how each patch point and knob turn along the way is affecting their sonic creation in real-time.

Additionally, Pallas offers a Remote Control option that allows for certain important functions of the synth can be controlled simply by using a modern web browser. Users can connect using another computer, an iPhone, iPad, Android phone, or just about any device that can browse the web: enter a simple URL into your browser and you can control Pallas from anywhere your wi-fi will allow you.

All of which makes Pallas just the latest indispensable device to come from the Max for Cats crew, continuously on a mission to bring modular versatility and new forms of fun, high quality sound to the Ableton platform."

Published on Aug 14, 2015 max forcats
Video and link for Lite version below.

"OSCiLLOT v. 1.1 - new MIDI Macro map system and Modules by http://www.surrealmachines.com
http://www.ableton.com/en/packs/oscil...
v1.1 Changelog: http://maxforcats.com/forums/topic/la..."

The update brings Max 7 compatibility and introduces a new Macro Mapping feature, allowing you to remotely control any OSCiLLOT parameter via automation and MIDI for full hands-on control of your modular patches.
The number of included OSCiLLOT modules also continues to grow, and for this update the DSP wizards at Surreal Machines have produced several special units to bolster your modular creation (or destruction) needs…

NEW / IMPROVED
• New Macro mapping system allows to assign the 8 macros directly to all module parameters.
• All module displays / meters are now drawn in high resolution on Retina displays (requires Max 7).
• Maximum zoom factor of the Editor GUI has been increased to 150%, allowing for more convenient patching on large displays.
• 3PhaseChorus has more modulation targets for the CV1 input and a new performance-optimized OpenGL display, which significantly reduces the module’s GPU load.

NEW MODULES
• Max for Cats GrainResynth
• Surreal Machines Destroyer
• Surreal Machines Analog Slew Delay
• Surreal Machines MultibandDistortion
• Surreal Machines PrecisionHighCut
• Surreal Machines Xover

FIXES
• When using Max 7 on OS X 10.10, Oscillot could crash when loading presets or modules.
• When using Max 7 on Windows, Oscillot would freeze when loading modules.
• When using Max 7, the Live and Max version information in the display of the main device would be incorrectly aligned.
• Certain displays / meters would sometimes not be drawn after closing and reopening the Oscillot Editor window.
• Digidelay: delay time calculation was incorrect.
• Pitch2Trigger: fifth outlet would not work.
• Slew limiter x1000 times would not work.
• Fixed some layout issues in OSC A.
