On the Nature of Tubelight: Sequential Prophet 5 + Metasonix R-52 Vacuum-Tube VCA/Distortion

video upload by MIKROPUSE

"Once nothing special sounding Sequential Prophet 5 chord progression now 'tubified' by an absolutely best-in-class Metasonix R-52 Vacuum-Tube VCA/Distortion (a Zerosum Intertia Edition 5U module), straight into a Mytek 192/8 AD Converter. No other preamps were used.
Few distortion devices come near Metasonix R-52 when it comes to preserving dynamic subtleties of source material. What's more, the natural compression that occurs helps a great deal, so the tracks require a little to no EQ during mixing. It does require a bit of tuning in, just to get the sound right where you want it to be."

METASONIX R 52 Zerosum Intertia Edition + Gibson TRINI LOPEZ + Scrotum Lab ORGONE ACCUMULATOR

video upload by MIKROPUSE

"A Gibson Trini Lopez electric guitar and a Scrotum Lab Orgone Accumulator (Frac) going into a lovely, and ever so slightly distorting Zerosum Intertia Edition Metasonix R 52 filter (5U) via Thermionic Culture Rooster 2 preamp (in the background). Not pretty - pretty."

Metasonix R-54 Mk-II

via this auction

"Metasonix R-54 MK-II Supermodule TUBE VCO/VCF

Welcome to the strange new world. The R-54 MkII is the most radical, revolutionary module Metasonix ever made. It will change the way you do music synthesis. There has never been an electronic-music product like this before. Even the oddest things that Buchla And Associates or Serge Modular ever made are prosaic and dull compared to the R-54.

It uses a triode-pentode in a unique Wien-bridge circuit, to provide clean sine-wave oscillation. Using a Vactrol, the pitch of the R-54 is sweepable from less than 20 Hz to more than 5 kHz, continuously, via front-panel control or a CV input. By adjusting the waveshape/resonance control, the sinewave signal produced by the R-54 can be trimmed to less than 10% THD (depending on operating pitch)---with NONE of the problems inherent in solid-state oscillators and sine waveshapers. Because the Wien bridge contains no piecewise sine shaper or amplitude-control circuit or component. The tube itself performs that job. So the distortion products are entirely low-order, unlike the "sine waves" that solid-state VCOs or samplers produce.

Turn up the overdrive control, and the oscillator output clips the output amplifier pentode tube, for a unique soft-clipped square-wave sound. The simplicity of the R-54 will fool you--its behavior is odd and radical, and it will take you months or years to fully explore all of its quirks.

Now for the special trick. Plug an audio signal into the audio input. Instantly, the R-54 transforms from a VCO into a bandpass resonant voltage-controlled filter, with the same range as in VCO operation -- 20 Hz to 5 kHz. Its behavior and sound are unique. Again, you will be kept busy for years exploring all of its strangeness.

CV response: Hz/v. Use a suitable MIDI/CV interface, or use our R-60 interface to obtain perfect equal-tempered tuning every time. Maximum output signal, 12 v p-p Power requirement: +-12v dc, 250 mA. (All specifications are approximate and may vary from sample to sample.) Tubes used: 19KG8, 6AK5.

The Metasonix R-series of vacuum-tube modules is intended for use in any "Eurorack" standard modular synthesizer system. All R-series modules are 22HP (112mm) wide and fit in any Doepfer(tm), Analogue Systems(tm), or other compatible cabinet. They are powered entirely from the cabinet's internal +-12v dc power supplies, using Doepfer compatible 16-pin power connectors. Their circuits protrude behind the panel less than 25mm (1 inch). All vacuum tubes are NOS (new old stock) types from classic American and European manufacturers that are run very conservatively for long life, and are readily available from distributors. The tubes protrude from the panel for visibility and cooling, less than 38mm (1.5 inches), and should fit inside a Doepfer A-100 suitcase cabinet lid or into a Doepfer mini case. All audio inputs and outputs and CV inputs/outputs are 100% compatible with other synthesizer modules. Plate voltage is provided by a tiny switching supply producing clean 48v regulated at low current, which is very safe and will not injure the user. Potentiometers are top-quality Alpha RK12L types, and 3.5mm phone jacks are special Kobiconn vertical-mount types, much better quality than the cheap ones usually seen in Euro modules. Each R-module is fully protected against reverse supply voltage, overvoltage, undervoltage, or incorrect hookup to external equipment. As with all Metasonix products, the R series is totally handcrafted in Northern California, USA."

Metasonix TM-1 tube waveshaper ring mod distortion pedal

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.
via this auction

"Available here is the one-and-only Metasonix TM-1 vacuum tube waveshaper, ringmod, and distortion pedal/desk top signal processor in excellent condition. Metasonix have built their reputation on the uniqueness of their products and this pedal is a fine example. You simply will not hear other signal processors create a similar flavor of squelchy, gritty, nasty, obnoxious, scrunchy, squealy, boisterous sounds that this unit can do. It uses vacuum tubes in a totally original way. But despite the noisiness of it's character it's still very alluring to listen to. It's got an organic feel to the distortion (for lack of a better term).

The TM-1 is one of the early model pedals and is extremely difficult to come by these days. It's rapidly becoming a collector's item. I bought this one second hand from Analogue Haven years ago and it has lived on the desktop in my smoke free home studio ever since. This particular unit does have four tiny screw holes in the front corners of the case that can be seen in the pictures. I don't know what their purpose was but they don't effect the usability of the pedal in any way...

From the manufacturer:

"VERY WEIRD AND WONDERFUL ! " is how one of our customers described this unit. If you are the type who likes things that are different , the Metasonix TM-1 may be just what you have been searching for. With its all vacuum tube circuit, there is no mistaking the sound of the TM-1 with any other device.

Metasonix took the basic circuit of their award-winning TS-21 Hellfire Modulator, and added the world's first vacuum tube audio ring modulator. The result is a new sound-effects device in a small, economical package. The sound is totally unique, powerful and distinctive. Use it as a stand-alone effects box, or mount it in a modular synth with the optional TM-D or TM-M kit.

The pentode preamp gives gain and distortion; the pulser injects small pulses on top of the signal; and the beam tube gives both wavefolding and ring modulation (carrier provided by an internal wide-range oscillator, or inject your own carrier signal). The TM-1 can also be used as a self-contained pseudorandom signal generator, by patching its output back to its input. You've read about "strange attractors" and other chaotic sound generation techniques? The TM-1 is the first all-tube chaotic sound generator. The results must be heard to be believed!

Frequency response: less than 10 Hz to greater than 40 kHz
Distortion: from less than 0.1% to 100%, depending on control settings and input waveform
Hum and noise: less than 0.5 mV
Power input: 10 - 12 volts AC, 50/60 Hz, 0.8 amp at idle
Inputs: phone jacks for audio input; optional inputs for beam-tube CV, VCA CV, and ring-modulator external carrier (requires at least 20v p-p signal for full effect)Output: audio (mono)
Dimensions: 7 1/2" (192mm) x 4 3/8" (112mm) x 3" (77mm)
Weight (not including accessories): 5 pounds (2.2 kg)"

Metasonix KV-100 Multi Effect System The Assblaster Tube Synth Effect SN 111

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

"From the dark raunchy minds of Metasonix comes The KV-100 Assblaster. When it comes to loud and wicked sounds, Metasonix are our champions. If you wanna REALLY spice up any audio signal, run it through an Assblaster and you'll be shot into an array of fuzzy madness that will crush the most abstract sounds. We wish we were twisted enough to explain what this pedal does exactly so heres the information from Metasonix site:

"The Metasonix KV-100 is not called the "Assblaster" for nothing. We've taken all of our knowledge of extreme vacuum-tube audio processing and combined it into a single convenient, easy-to-use package. Inevitably, the end of the TM series will cause shit-eating, ass-fisting guitar players to whine about how "underappreciated" they are. So, we're feeding them a foot-long fecal sandwich of audio penis.

It's complete with disgusting and juvenile cartoon art by Dave Lovelace, of Retarded Animal Babies fame.

The KV-100 contains the following:

Metasonix TM-3 Gas Tube Dual VCO with Suboctave

via this auction

"Here is the legendary Metasonix TM-3 Gas Tube Dual VCO with Suboctave pedal/desktop unit. The Metasonix brand has become very popular amongst 'in-the-know' professional electronic music producers in recent years, and it's reputation is well earned. I also own the TM-1 waveshaper/ringmod, and have owned the TM-2 filter. In my opinion all of the hype that Metasonix gets is true. Online demos and Youtube videos don't even come close to doing these machines justice. Words I'd use to describe their character are organic, quasi-predictable, devastating, and ALIVE.
This particular unit is one of the early Metasonix pedal/desktop models that has rapidly become almost a collector's item."

The Bear Wants Video

Cool shot sent my way via brian comnes. Brian payed a visit to Metosonix with daddio this weekend. While there he took this shot and talked shop with Eric Barbour. One thing that came up was the lack of Metasonix videos out there on YouTube and the like. He has tons of audio sent his way, but not video. If you own a Metasonix product and a have a video recorder handy, take a vid and send it my way or directly to Metasonix.

NAMM: PRESENTING THE METASONIX KV-100

"LET IT BLAST YOUR RECTUM CLEAN.

The Metasonix KV-100 is not called the "Assblaster" for nothing. We've
taken all of our knowledge of extreme vacuum-tube audio processing and
combined it into a single convenient, easy-to-use package.

Complete with disgusting and juvenile cartoon art by Dave Lovelace, of
Retarded Animal Babies fame.

The KV-100 contains the following:

--the basic preamp stage of our TM-7 Scrotum Smasher, driving:
--the waveshaping (pulser) and ring modulation functions of our TM-1,
minus the ring-modulator carrier oscillator, which then drives;
--a VCO derived from our TM-3 (it is NOT intended for use as a
synthesizer pitch source, only as a special effect for signal
degradation), leading to;
--an all-new wide-sweeping bandpass filter,
with envelope filter function;
--plus it has an envelope follower, which also makes a gate signal;
--and a noise gate on the output, which is always active and
is driven by said gate signal.

Plus relay-based true bypass for the main circuit, plus relay controlled
activation of the VCO and pulser. Controllable with manual switches or
optional external footswitches.

Only 8 knobs allow for vast ranges of distortion and effects, from
subtle to flaming-enema. It's for those filthy, nutsack-sucking
guitarists. Because they deserve, and love, flaming enemas.
Feel free to gnaw the crust off my taint, Tiny Worm Guitar Dude.

Specifications:
Audio input accepts unbalanced guitar, microphone or line signals.
Output 600 ohms unbalanced. 1/4" jacks for all I/O.
Extra inputs: carrier audio input for ring modulator, CV inputs for VCO
pitch and filter sweep.
Extra outputs: envelope CV out, VCO waveform out, pulser waveform out.
Frequency response: yes. Distortion: yee-haw. Filter sweep range: <100hz>12 kHz.
Enclosed in rugged, moisture-resistant ABS utility box with hinged lid,
carrying handle and latch.
Size with lid closed 12.25"x7.4"x6.5" (314mmx186mmx168mm), weight (minus
AC adapter) approx 2 lbs (1.4 kg).
Power: 12 volts AC, 50/60 Hz, 1.5 amps. Uses Jameco 167151 AC adapter
for power in 120v countries. Power inlet: 2.1mm coaxial jack.

USA retail price $995.

The KV100, plus more new Metasonix products, will be visible at
the 2009 Winter NAMM (opening today), booth 6735 (Big City Music)."

Metasonix: rack your KV-100 Assblaster!

"The Metasonix KV-100 Assblaster is an awesome machine for sound generation and signal processing. It comes from the manufacturer built into a "tacklebox" for tabletop use. Some modular customers have asked us about rackmounting them next to their racked modulars. It is definitely possible, but instead of offering a kit Metasonix have posted straightforward instructions about rackmounting it on their website. Modded Metasonix D-1000 drum machine into Metasonix Reverb prototype module by Mecanikill?

Published on Apr 28, 2013 Me CanIKill·6 videos

"I finally modded my D-1000 by bringing the trim pots for the roll rate and the 3 drum resonance trim pots out to their own potentiometers up front. Very nice mod to do it really opens up a whole new slew of tones without having to use a screwdriver on the tiny pots on the back. The roll rate is also super useful to have adjustable from up front and adds a new element of tweak-ability to it. The output is blended with some reverb from the upcoming Metasonix tube reverb module coming some time in the future. This is a prototype and not the final version of the Metasonix Reverb module as there will be some changes to it."
