Qu - Bit Aurora Tutorial 1: Getting Started

video upload by Qu - Bit

"Welcome to Aurora, a spectral reverb capable of a wide palette of sounds: from lush caverns and whale songs, to alien textures you've never created before. And likely, will invoke a hunger for exploration you felt when you first touched a modular synth.

Aurora uses a phase vocoder audio engine which separates the input signal's time and pitch domains. By blurring these signals you can achieve beautiful time-stretched tails, or cybernetic metallic effects.

Since Aurora’s sonic response is entirely dependent on the input signal, no two patches will sound alike, lending itself to an infinite world of surprise and discovery.

Discovery. It’s why we are all here."

OP-Z Dark Analog Explorations

video upload by Perplex On

"Some rather dark and noisy explorations using only the analog instrument on the OP-Z. What i found really useful in this case was to either use full cranked up reverb on both fx channels to really dip the sounds into dark space, or combining the reverb with the chorus fx for some heavy detunings. In some patches i‘ve also included the gyro of the OP-Z to modulate the filter cutoff by tilting the device. Besides, i realized that when turning the usb monitoring on while live recording this into my iPad over USB, it‘s feeding itself back into the input, resulting in more or less heavy feedback loops, which is also a technique used in some occasions here."

I wanted to do a Vangelis tribute track. For me personally, his soundscapes and above all his sound aesthetics were probably the initial spark that brought me to electronic music and thus to synthesizers. I have almost all albums. The COSMOS series with Carl Sagan ran on GDR television in the early 1980s. That was my first contact with his music. The sounds touched me and painted pictures in my head. They stimulated my imagination. That ultimately aroused my interest in these supposedly unattainable "miracle machines", the synthesizers. But that was all so far away back then. Rest in peace maestro.

The track Chung Kuo is on the China album, released in 1979.

I used the Roland VP330 for string sounds, the Oberheim OB-X for the CS brass sound, the Arp Quadra for the main theme and the bass & string sounds, the Emulator II for percussion sounds, the Yamaha DX7 II für the melody and pad sounds and the Roland M-VS1 module for additional horn/pad sounds."

Ambient Modular at 6000ft // DivKid live on Mt. Rainier

video upload by DivKidVideo

"Back in 2019 I was over in Seattle, Washington, USA for 'Velocity' an event by Modular Seattle & Patchwerks. They had a warm up show and last minute encouraged me to borrow some modules and a case, put a system together and play at the show. This was good as it led into my talk on zonal approaches to live modular systems for the main event Velocity. While travelling around and still with the system some days later we decided to take the rig up a snow capped mountain and perform up there. Freezing cold, shivering hands and a beautiful view!

An exclusive 15 page PDF is available for Patreon supporters that highlights all the patching, my zonal approach, modules used, the history of my approach to live minimal ambient modular and more. Head to https://bit.ly/DK-patreon if you'd like to gain access to a great community and exclusives.

A huge thanks to D B Pawlan who when we were driving around Tacoma and Seattle Washington said 'we should take the modular up there' and pointed to the huger Mt. Rainier that was always in the view. The clip at the end of this video is David driving back up to near where we were if you're curious.

This system was quickly put together in the days leading up to the surprise performance with modules, case and cables borrowed from Bradley Millington (Modular Seattle) and David Pawlan (Wabisabi). A huge thanks to them for facilitating and encouraging a performance on a new system and for being so awesome with me pulling modules out of their set ups to do this. I used the same system for my talk and presentation at Velocity 2019 as well as for another performance live at the Chapel."
