PULScar - Waldorf Pulse + OSCar DIY Hybrid by Stereoping

CBD Computer Drums - ft. SDS8,TQ-5,JX-03,K4,PULScar

Published on Nov 15, 2017 Stereoping

Note the focus of this video from Stereoping is on his midified CRB Computer Drums. What caught my attention though was his PULScar mentioned in the second paragraph below.

"Rough testsong for a midified CRB Computer Drums. The digital part or this rare drumcomputer was completely broken and ripped off to implant a midi trigger interface bringing the analogue drumvoices back into studio life. I also added a DR-110 handclap unit as there were some trigger channels of the midi-interface left over. There's also a little article about this project on my site.

The CRB gets some backing from a Simmons SDS8. Everything sequenced by the MPC1000 with realtime mutes from a DIY midicontroller called 'MPC Muterscener' (... of course). Further gear: Yamaha TQ-5, Kawai K4, Roland JX-03 and a PULScar prototype with a dedicated Programmer. The PULScar is a hybrid of a Waldorf Pulse1 with a (still) breadboarded OSCar VCF replacing just the Pulse's ladder VCF and keeping all remaining other Pulse elements (DCOs, ENVs, LFOs, VCA, MODs). More on the PULScar soon.

Ego view camera! Despite the shaking I think it's more interesting than a fixed cam as it captures the currently important viewpoints. Hope you like it :-)"

The PULSCar files - #2

Published on Mar 6, 2018 Stereoping

"2nd remix - trying to make songs from raw ideas i sketched in the 90ies when i had an OSCar. Other gear used: Korg Poly6, Roland Juno6, Alesis AirFX, Yamaha R-1000 and 2 x Boss SE-50. As i lack a real OSCar today i try to substitude it with the PULSCar - a Pulse where it's ladder-VCF was replaced with the double 13600-OTA-VCF of the OSCar. The PULSCar-Project is still not finished in 03/2018."

The PULSCar files - #1

Published on Jan 24, 2018 Stereoping

"First track in a remix series of some songs i made in the 90ies when i still had an OSCar synthesizer. As the OSCars are as expensive as rare nowadays, i am currently trying to build a sustitude by transplanting a DIY OSCar VCF into a Waldorf Pulse, replacing it's ladder filter and interfacing the Pulse's internal control voltages. Being half PULSE, half OSCar, the project is called PULSCar. It's not yet finished but good enough to make the first video i think. Also part of the PULSCar is a derived 'Synth Programmer' in OSCar design. I hope you enjoy the song :-)"

The PULSCar files - #3

Published on Mar 25, 2018 Stereoping

"A mellow tune this time. On checking out a newly aquired T.C. M-ONE with the Boutique JP-03, the critical border was passed where a simple test sequence starts to get inspiring and is to nice to be thrown away. Now this is the 3-hour-production result of a studio afternoon. Arrangement and mix are far from perfect, demoing inverse VCF keytracking, LFO1 mod, Portamento or VCF behaviour of the PULScar on the way. The sound is quite noisy as i forgot to mute unused mixer channels (awkward). Other synths used: Roland JP-03, Nord Drum 2, Korg PolySix, Kawai K4. Effects: TC M-one, D-Two, Alesis AirFX and 2 x Boss SE-50."

2019/07 - Sahara Pulse

Published on Jul 28, 2019 Stereoping

"Starting out as a simple testsong for a midified TR-606 in a custom case, this midi-arrangement exercise went somehow oriental and even epic in the end. The solo is played by the PULScar with slight realtime modulations to bring some live into the sound. Finally found the time to make a neat sticker for the frontpanel. The ensemble also contains a modded Alesis HR-16 with custom EPROMS holding oriental percussion. The big knob is for downpitching the whole machine, demoed at 3:52. Other gear: Roland Juno 6 (Bass) & JV1080 (Strings, Brass), Kawai K4 (Brass) and the Waldorf Microwave (.. well, some synth sound). Footage shows the realtime sound editing, some fotos, studio flyovers and score screengrabs."

2019/05 - Bangkok to San Francisco

Published on May 7, 2019 Stereoping

PULSCar sighting. Note the background on it looks red / burgundy not black. Fun track.

"I hope you enjoy listening to this funny composition as i did while arrangeing it. Starting as a stupid solo-entertainer-pattern with Cha-Cha-Trumpets. The arrangement takes a twist into Bhangra at 1:05 with a juicy Synth-solo played by Dreadbox's Nyx, accompanied by a programmed VSTi-Tabla. The journey continues with deep Volksmusik-Horns leading into the contrastive & sweet contra theme at 2:04. The Boehm Dynamic 12x24 Ensemble strings have their solo now, the Nyx is helping out a bit. In the end from 3:03 the chord progression gets somehow jazzy for a final Nyx synthesizer solo.

A realtime recording of a FL Studio midi arrangement. Drums: CR-68 (with midi & the missing CR78 voices MetalBeat,Tambourine + Guiro), Bass: Waldorf Pulse, oriental Solosynth: Dreadbox Nyx, Horns & Backing-strings: JV1018, High strings: Böhm Dynamic 12/24

The video itself it not that exciting. The playlist and a headcam-realtime-shot from the gokiburi-studio showing some gear and slight modulation-performance on the Nyx during the soli. At least something to look at.
Hope you like it :-)"
