KORG Releases SDK for Volca Sample

via http://korginc.github.io

"Currently your volca sample can only receive external samples through an iOS device. This SDK allows you to create your own tools with the interface that you design for your platform. Not only will this library unleash the potential to load samples and sequences, it will empower users to combine this code with other features of your making.

Auto-slice a song to generate a sample set?
Turn photos of patterns into sequences?
algorithmic sample music generator?
generate random sequence from quantum effects?

The choice is yours. Your creativity and coding skills are the limits.

what is the KORG SYRO library?

It’s the main part of the SDK. It contains the algorithms that turn your sample or sequence data (syrodata) into audio data (syrostream) that the volca sample can decode when received through its SYNC IN port.

what is volca sample?

The volca sample is a sample sequencer that lets you edit and sequence up to 100 sample sounds in real time for powerful live performances.
See more on our product page.

features

encode sample data for transfer into volca sample
encode a 16 step sequence for transfer into volca sample
delete specific samples in the volca sample
delete all the samples in the volca sample
required audio specs

KORG SYRO encodes binary data into audio using QAM (quadrature amplitude modulation). Like the old dial-up modems! It is sensitive to alterations to the audio like EQ and things like automatic level control. So please make sure they’re turned off on your device.

Your audio output device will need:

native WAV playback
stereo headphone or line level output"

Retrokits RK-002 Midiator for KORG Volca Sample

Volca sample with Retrokits RK-002 Midiator

Published on Nov 4, 2015 Retrokits

"Just an example what you can do with the RK-002. The RK-002 splits single MIDI channel notes to the 10 MIDI channels required by the Volca Sample.
More info at http://www.retrokits.com/rk002"

"The Volca Sample is a neat little portable sampler. You can sync it's sequencer to other Volca's or modular equipment. It also has a MIDI connector which allows you to control the Volca Sample via a DAW.

However, when you connect the Volca Sample to your DAW you'll quickly notice it takes up 10 MIDI channels(!). Since MIDI only supports up to 16 channels this is a very big chunk of MIDI for such a little device...

Undoubtedly this has been done so you can control a bunch of sample parameters per sample channel but if you want to play the Volca Sample not only by the device itself but from a keyboard or sequencer, 10-channel mapping is a really unconventional way of controlling a sampler.

This is why we put together the RK-002 cable. This is no ordinary MIDI cable but has an embedded microcontroller which maps the note-messages from a single incoming MIDI channel to the ten separate Volca Sample channels.

Not only does it remap the channels, per sample channel it also translates:
note velocity to sample level
pitch bend to sample pitch
modulation to sample filter"

RK-002 Polyphony/PolyMUX on the Volca Sample

Published on May 30, 2017 Retrokits

"As of RK-002 Volca Sample firmware v47+ you can now use chromatic and polyphonic play on the volca sample!

In earlier firmwares it was already possible to set one specific channel to respond to MIDI keys and play a melody; MIDI Program Change messages 1-10 would fix a volca sample channel to chromatic play but with our new firmware this has been expanded:

Now Program Change 11-19 will reserve the amount of channels used for polyphonic (and chromatic) play.
The RK-002 will evenly divide pressed keys across the reserved channels. It's comparable to the PolyMUX implementation we did on the RK-002 Volca FM firmware

An example:
Sending Program Change 13 will reserve the 1st three Volca Sample channels for polyphony. Pressing a chord will trigger these three channels. If you set the same sample to all these channels you will have a bit of a lo-fi sample player.
Volca Sample MIDI parameter changes are sent to all reserved channels so you can change multiple channel sound properties at once (e.g. a mapped filter value on the modulation wheel will affect all polymuxed channels).

Mind you - the volca sample can normally not play samples chromatically, nor does it respond to note off-messages. The way we achieved this is a pure hack. Best playing range is about 2 octaves and sometimes sounds are a bit out of tune.

Having this said: It is again more loads of fun with the Volca Sample!

Some tips:
* Pan the channels a bit differently
* set loop points (or even map sample start on velocity)
* reverse play
* play with reverb.
* change samples across PolyMUX channels

... and... use the internal sequencer to also trigger the PolyMUXed channels. This way playing keys can tune the affected channels instantly to the correct pitch. Your volca sample sequencer can be used to program a 16 step arpeggiator like this."

Quick Tip: Granular Synthesis On A Volca Sample Patch Tutorial

Published on Aug 19, 2019 Perfect Circuit

"This quick tip is about how to make a granular sample sound on a Korg Volca Sample.

You will need:
- A Volca Sample (you could try this on other samplers as well)

Instructions:
- Pick your sample (this works better on a longer sample)
- Set the tempo to max (240BPM)
- Go into step mode and put triggers on all 16 steps of the sequence
- Push play to start the sequence
- Adjust “Start” to change which part of the sample you hear
- Adjust “Length” to change how big the grains are
- Adjust “Speed” to change the pitch
- Add some attack to make the sound less clicks and glitchy
- Add reverb to smooth the sound out more

This trick adds something almost like granular synthesis to a sampler that doesn’t have a granular mode. In granular synthesis playback speed, direction and pitch are all independent of one another.

Every time the sample is triggered a "grain" is heard. The start setting sets where in the sample the grain is from, the length adjusts how big the grains are and speed adjusts the pitch. The envelopes adjust the grain window shape.

Korg Volca Jam #09 | Volca Beats, Volca Sample, Volca Bass, Volca Keys, Behringer Echo Machine

Published on Nov 18, 2017 Dub Cousteau

"This is my latest live setup for jamming - a Volca Beats, a Korg Volca Sample, a Volca Bass and a Volca Keys. Everything is connected to a Behringer Xenyx 1002B Mixer for mixing and send/return effect with a Behringer Echo Machine (with a tape delay simulation).

I used the pan function of the Korg Volca Sample to get two seperated outputs, one with sample sounds and one with the drums. The Volca Keys is hooked to a Ammoon Pockrock - a small and cheap guitar effect.

The MIDI controller is used to control parameters of the Volca Sample and mostly track volumen. I used a Patchblock with MIDI in and out to do some MIDI mapping."

Korg Volca Jam #04 | Volca - Beats, Bass, Keys, Sample | Behringer Xenyx 1002B

Published on Jun 26, 2017 Dub Cousteau

"This is a live jam with a setup of a Korg Volca Beats, a Volca Bass, a Volca Sample and a Volca Keys. Bass, Keys and Volca Sample are connected to a Behringer Xenyx 1002B Mixer for mixing and send/return effects coming from a TC Electronic M300 multifffect unit (delay and reverb). The output of the Xenyx 1002B and of the Korg Volca Beats connected to Behringer DDM4000 Dj mixer. The DDM 4000 adds som delay on the master and used for some DJ EQ-ing.

I used the pan function of the Korg Volca Sample to get two seperated outputs, one with chord sounds and one with hihats and some percussions. I always need additonal hihats and a shaker :)

The MIDI controller is used to control paramters of the Volca Sample and the Volca Beats, mostly track volumen. I used a Patchblock with MIDI in and out to do some MIDI mapping, so for example one Knob of the MIDI controller can control track volumen of the SD, HT and LT at once.

To all this, a mp3 player with a drone sound is connected to another patchblock, this one is synced to the volcas and can record filter its movements."
