as on our timeline, we have started the second phase of Grp A4 production. To be exact, the THIRD production of Grp A4 Synthesizer, as first and second batches are gone away very quickly. In these days, we are gathering the last components for production while engines are gearing up. We'll keep you informed on.

Last, but not least: we decided to built some instrument more than forecast, so - if you are still bouncing and stalling the decision - THIS could be the right time to get the Grp A4 Analog Synthesizer.

Van Allen Echoes - a musical journey in eight minutes from sun to earth

"This piece was inspired by sounds which were created by atmospheric lightning discharges and their interaction with the Van Allen Radiation Belt. These sounds* have been detected and recorded by the University of Iowa (http://www-pw.physics.uiowa.edu). I further processed the sounds using the GRP A4 synthesizer and than augmented them with a 'spacy' piece of music. As always recorded live in one track and using the famous coat from Kazakhstan. Why does the piece last 8 minutes - it's the time particles need from sun to earth and reach the Van Allen Radiation Belt - we can see them as polar lights.
The video snippets are taken from the NASA homepage (www.nasa.gov).

*The Van Allen Probes EMFISIS Waves instruments detected these signals with two orthogonal magnetic antennas (Bv and Bu) during UTC hour 18 of September 11, 2012. The predominant feature is a barrage of whistlers which originate with lightning discharges on Earth. These signals propogate along magnetic field lines through the thin ionized gasses of space which allow the higher frequencies to travel faster than the lower frequencies. This results in a frequency dispersion and the characteristic whistling tone, which also sounds a little like science-fiction movie sound effects."

Combining classic subtractive synthesis with modern desires, it's got pretty tasty spec.

In this video I tried to make use of the A4's architecture, whilst keeping things musical. It's very easy with this much power at your fingertips to overcook it and just make either a sonic mess, or a sound that only works in isolation. Hopefully I've struck the balance.

Examples of things I did:
Dual sequence utilising the playback and step repeat modes. I sequenced some chords in one section with oscillator 1 + 2 (tuned a fifth apart) following sequencer A and oscillator 3 following sequencer B.

For the lead sound I also used the sequencer as a modulation source sent to phase synched oscillators and the filters that also had its tempo CV'd from an envelope so that it sped up and down rollercoaster style.

I ran my Juno through the A4 via the external signal in and envelope follower. This allowed me to control the A4 from the Juno, but have the dual A4 filters on it. I also tuned in two of the A4's oscillators to complimentary intervals and they were coming through with the Juno every time it gated the synth.

The main riff was a blend of three oscillators and the ring modulator with a combination of linear and exponential modulation and oscillator sync.

There were also various stereo bass sounds - subby and round, sharp and phat, and driven and heavy. The distortion comes from the synth itself.

I also made some floaty, trippy sounds with the A4 in the middle eight, as well as various FX.

Hopefully this all gives a glimpse into what it can do.

"A quick noodle on the GRP A4 Synthesizer… It is a wonderful instrument that can be used completely stand alone. The sound is definitely “modern” analog and quite precise.

But it can get real mean as it’s easy to overdrive the dual filters. If that’s not enough, there are also separate distortion circuits for each should you wish to engage them. 3 VCOs, S&H, 2 LFO's, Auto Pan, Sequencer, Ring Mod, Noise, 2 Filters, Midi, CV.. its pretty awesome.

No post processing.. recorded the stereo out directly into Ableton. The only addition is the Eventide H9 pedal providing some nice delay and the Octatrack playing a simple beat in the background.

I hope you enjoy watching it as much as I enjoyed playing it. :)"

"I tried to show a different side of the GRP A4 by not using filter distortion or the ring modulator at all. I didn't overdrive the filters either. I use the sequencer to modulate the oscillators and select different sequencer rows at different times. The sequencer is in 2x8 mode and is also used as a filter mod. The two filters are set up in parallel mode. Most of the time the ladder filter is in 24 dB mode. I had the filter envelope looping in auto mode with very slow attack and delay times.

I intentionally did not play a lot of notes on the keyboard but, instead, tried to use the sequencer with different row selectors and heavy use of the pattern reset button.

The A4 was put through a Strymon Timeline running the tape delay and a Strymon Blue Sky Reverberator for reverb. All drums were done with my modified 606."

"A simple jam I made when exploring the GRP A2 for the first time. I used both GRP's internal sequencers and the Cirklon to sequence the other synths. Except for the BigSky and Chorus Echo, there are no effects and I didn't do any post-editing of sounds.

Apologies for the bad IMovie skillzzzz. I just wanted to show how intuitive the GRP's are.
