LFO Waveshaping on the OB6

Published on Jul 15, 2018 Kris Lennox

"Illustration of the LFO on the OB6. The patch itself, like last night's Matrixbrute analog patch, took quite a while to make. But it's a great patch for illustrating the LFO. Note I'm intentionally limiting what I'm playing with in this vid i.e. no resonance sweeps etc.

The OB6 is a great sound design tool. Of course, I'd advise anyone considering purchasing the Obi to know the boundaries of the instrument (this can be said of any instrument, though. I've never purchased a 6-string guitar then complained about the lack of a 7th string) - but within these boundaries there is almost limitless potential. And the Obi tone needs no introduction.

This is a sample from a 30-40 minute take. I'm working on something at present that requires quite odd and unique sounds (also hence last night's vid). With synth sound design projects, I normally have an idea of the sound I want, and record what I 'think' the sound I want is - but play within a 'bandwidth parameter' whereby i'll go through various permutations of sounds. More often than not the sound I use is something found when playing within these bandwidths rather than the 'imagined' sound itself.

I find it good practice to simply hit record, then keep the end product as a 'sketchbook', as even something as short as a 5-second sample can have its place, given the correct project/concept.

It s also good to take a very objective approach to easily 'let go' of something. Generally, when listening back, i'll be thinking RE certain parts 'bin that, keep that part, bin that part, maybe that part, bin that' etc etc.

The latter point is an important one for anyone hoping to succeed in the commercial music industry. If you reach that stage, it is more than likely you'll have to present materials as an illustration of your work. And the response will be very objective/literal i.e. 'this could be useful, no use for this at present, that is pastiche, this is interesting' etc etc. If precious about work, hearing someone else call something you've created 'useless' probably won't sit too well! But it is very common - and isn't an insult i.e. something may, in fact, have no commercial use. Which is ok. It doesn't mean it has no value.

All best
Kris"

"My DSI Prophet X had a fault on delivery with the LFO Freq control. Exceptional service at DSI meant that a replacement PCB was dispatched to me immediately for DIY replacement (in the the UK).

This rough and ready video documents the process and gives a glimpse inside the Prophet X for those interested!

Sound taken from my ohter recent video - a demo using a patch I made"

And a demo:

Dave Smirt (DSI) Prophet X - long play demo of custom patch

Published on Jul 12, 2018

"This synth has massive sweet spots - you can tweak the sound in so many ways and it will still be musical and emotional. This video is of a patch I made called 'The City'. This is a single part (no layering/splitting)

Slider 1 = more LFO (and slight sample) modulation of main oscillators
Slider 2 = more high pass filter (from effects) and tweaking of other FX params
Mod wheel = open analog LPF and reduce FX reverb time
Aftertouch = more oscillator slop

No external processing whatsoever - what you hear is the sound straight out of the Prophet X.

Sorry the video isn't pin sharp. But please still watch in HDfor better audio quality."

"Has brand-new membrane panels, installed 04/18. All keys function, and all 6 voices work great. Sweet!

Interior is clean, zero corrosion. All boards look great, nearly brand new.

Exterior is near pristine (some oxidation present on upper right of top panel) but overall excellent condition (9.5/10) for a circa 1985-86 vintage instrument.

Blue sides were recently rounded to remove edge damage, and blue stain was done with oil-based stain (Varathane Worn Navy) and urethane satin finish.

This is a 6 voice (12 VCOs total) analog synth with a 61-key velocity sensitive keyboard. It has selective pitch bend, which lets you bend some notes in a chord while keeping others fixed. It has a MIDI interface, and includes a built-in sequencer."

MOOG minimoog vs Model D │ Can you hear it now?! - haQ attaQ 290

Reveal comes after 4:20.

"It's time for the title bout! MOOG minimoog vs Model D. Hardware synth legend against it's software counterpart. Both made by one of the most beloved synthesizer manufacturers! So the question is apart from the obvious hardware and software aspect, how similar do they really sound? Can you hear the difference now?

Huge thanks to Kai Aras from NUMERICALaudio who provided me with minimoog footage and sounds. You're a boss!

The lovely Oscilloscope is actually a composite video made using two pictures and a video and took several hours to put together. I borrowed the yellow oscilloscope from a picture that I found on Pinterest. ► https://www.pinterest.se/pin/54395046..."

Salyut - 1 / Салют-1 by Soviet Space Child

"This track is a demo/tribute to the Waldorf MicroWave XTk, which is my favorite digital synthesizer of all time. All of the instruments on this track are from my Waldorf MicroWave XTk 30, and the drums are samples taken from the PPG Waveterm. The drums and strings were processed through an Eventide H3000 D/SE, and there are two Roland RE-501 Chorus Echoes on the FX bus configured in stereo operation. All of the tracks were tracked and mixed through an analog mixer, with analog EQ and compression on the mix bus.

Eurorack Modular J3RK Mirror Core VCO in PLL configuration (sort of...)

Published on May 5, 2014 encrust1

Watch your volume levels on this one.

"Just a bit of fun...

My newly constructed J3RK Mirror Core VCO kit from Synthcube. (Not quite finished - a switch needs wiring in and a knob adding.)

The only external module doing anything relevant is a Doepfer LFO.

The left side VCO is producing a reference frequency which the right side should lock to - although this frequency is very low for much of the video. This would be a classic PLL (with divider on the right VCO output, phase comparator XOR gate, and integrator controlling the right VCO voltage input) except that the Lockhart folder is inserted in the PLL loop. This is configured as VCA + single fold. The control voltage for the VCA comes from the external LFO.

The result is that the loop never really 'locks' but meanders around a few attractors which are heavily based on the left VCO frequency. The video camera doesn't capture it well, but this set up produces a lot of bass at times.

I also have the FM input of the left VCO controlled by a second phase comparator output.

I am looking forward to completing the module and getting it into my main rack with filters.

Sorry for the shaky video."

Frequency Central System 700 filter (Roland clone) Eurorack modular

Published on Jul 15, 2018 DreamsOfWires

"I wanted a bit of classic Roland sound in my Eurorack modular, hence the System 700 filter and other Frequency Central System X modules. Here it's being played via an Arturia Keystep, and I'm using the Make Noise Pressure Points as a kind of patch memory for filter cutoff settings, which I also 'play' in the first part to demonstrate this. In the middle is a verion of something I recorded/uploaded a couple of times with my old Roland SH-1, first in 2012, along with some of the original video from it. See links in video.

In the final part I overdub the first sound over the second.

Recorded into AUM on an iPad, with Audio Damage EOS2 reverb.

THE LOST TIMBRE - Syncalvier II Release G

Published on Jul 15, 2018 100 Things I Do

"I thought I would do another sound exploration and Timbre clip for the Synclaver.

The tile of the clip comes from dialling in a really nice patch only through my own loose thinking forgetting to ensure I had a writable floppy in the drive to start with! Oh well, live and learn! For some reason my Synclavier gets a bit grumpy when It wants to write to a disk and it can't (possible I don't know a key combination to recover the CPU without blowing everything away also)."

Synth Stuff Ep. 46 - E-mu Emax II

Published on Jul 15, 2018 tritonrecordings

"The Emax line was the most affordable range of samplers, especially compared to the famed Emulator series. The Emax II differs from the 1 primarily in that is has digital filters instead of analog. I've made a couple samples from Silent Hill (the first two sounds) and it's pretty easy to figure out how to get them in and modify them. If anyone knows how to get the Alan Wilder/Depeche Mode sounds on here, let me know! I suspect Depeche Mode fans are the main reason why Emulator prices stay high, but I've been wrong before. I see loads of sounds online but I'm still unsure how to get them on here. Pointers welcome!"

Sequential Circuits Prophet T8 Synthesizer SN 000155

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

"This beautiful Prophet T8 has just been serviced by David Sesnak at Wine Country Sequential and is fully functional, running the latest OS version 3.8. I have cared well for it in my smoke-free studio for many years. Will ship in the same carefully padded box that Wine Country sent it in. Comes with original manual and dual foot pedal. Cosmetically in good condition - the wood is in good shape save for one noticeable scratch on the right wood cheek, and some scratches on the metal top cover (see photos).

The T8, Sequential Circuits' legendary powerful flagship poly-aftertouch synth, was introduced in 1983. It was Sequential's answer to the CS-80, and is well-known for its excellent hammer-action keyboard that offers polyphonic aftertouch, attack and release velocity. It was so well-designed that the same keyboard was incorporated into the Synclavier II, one of the most high-end synthesizers ever made.

One little-known fact about the T8 is that starting with OS v3.5, it can be switched to act as an MPE / Channel-Per-Note controller (MIDI Mode 4), which basically means you can control MPE-compatible synths with per-note aftertouch. It is like polyphonic aftertouch (but only for MPE / channel-per-note compatible synths or multitimbral synths that can receive aftertouch on 8 separate channels)"

A truly unique machine with a very distinct and identifiable sound. Monophonic analogue synthesizer with cutoff frequency, resonance, envelope, decay, accent, glide + waveform control.

Excellent condition. 100% original with no modifications. Serial number 220800. No corrosion on battery terminals. Original box packaging. 1-owner since 1999, rarely used and held in storage for the past 15-years. Good working order. Sold as is without manual, adapter or carry bag."
