Performance Music Systems SYNTAR Turns 40

via @sdf_pubnix

"it’s been 40 years since the Performance Music Systems SYNTAR was introduced at the #namm show in #1980 by george mattson - bob #moog even got to try it out #keytar #namm2020 #eml #analog #synthesizer #ymo #rydeen #cover"

Check out previous posts featuring the Syntar here.

The Syntar was the first self-contained synthesizer keytar. Before the Syntar, keytars were controllers. The Syntar was created by George Mattson of Mattson Mini Modular. There was a keyboardless version of the Syntar called the SWAN, or Syntar Without a Neck. A SWAN II was announced back in 2018, under development with Division 6.

Update: you can find a great article on the Syntar at Carbon111.com here, and an interview I did with George Mattson way back in 2006 here.

Data Run [Cover] - Boutique / Circuit / Crave / MC-101 / PRO-1 / TR-8

Published on Jan 24, 2020

"This track was the theme tune to on of TV-am's early Saturday morning show, Data Run - 1983-84

Music by Vince Clarke, Sung by Alison Moyet, all I can find on the web is a couple of 40+ second videos of this track, I thought it was deserving enough to be fleshed out a little...

Thank you to kvfive for help with some of the audio samples.

As always, the track is played 'live' in one take - with no DAW, editing or post production.

"Bueller? Bueller?

Everyone has probably heard or seen this sampler at some point in their life (whether they knew or not) Probably most famously used by Depeche Mode, but its was the prime choice for many bands in the 80's. It had great sounding sample libraries to cover most of your bases. Or you could sample your own sounds in. It recorded at a whopping 8-bits with a total of 17.5 seconds. That might not sound like a lot by today's standards but it had a special quality that gave it a distinct character. The real magic came from the analog VCFs and VCAs that finish out the signal chain. On top of all that, it was also 8 part multi-timbral (also 8 voice polyphonic) with a built in sequencer. This could essentially run your most of your show back in the day!

This particular unit is in really great shape and had the original top 5 inch floppy drive replaced with a much faster and larger digital drive. The USB stick includes a bunch of virtual disks with samples on them.

This Emulator was recently serviced and looked at. The power harness of the drive was fixed and the electronics of the unit were inspected and are working properly. The built in floppy drive has been disconnected but is working fine and can be reconnected in place of the digital drive if desired."

"This amazing sounding duo-phonic synth is fitted in DIY casing with a CME midi-keyboard (original keys removed), and modified with CV/gate, CV LPF/HPF Filter CV control, x2.

Everything is wired using a Kenton Pro -2000 MKII cv-midi interface (which has a build in LFO and more), enabling Midi/USB control , either as two separate mono synths (i.e, Minikorg 700s) or as a duo phonic synth. Separate control of "upper" and "lower" both CV/gate (notes) and HPF and LPF- filters."

Buchla Music Easel - A Tree in the Backyard is Missing

Published on Jan 24, 2020 Jae Ryan

"A slow ambient piece on the Easel. The Easel runs through my Chase Bliss pedal board as usual with Darkworld providing reverb/degradation, MOOD providing a little granular bit (being sequenced by the easel) that also runs through the MOOD's reverb & a little loop from Blooper that comes in much later.

Since the pedal chain is mono, I decided to also mic up my room (in stereo) with my zoom recorder to add a little width and depth. I chose a location that was bright and lacking bass so that the stereo to mono collapse would be a little less drastic and I think it worked out great,

If you do take the time to listen, I'd like to apologize in advance for the parts that get somewhat harsh and also for the terrible camera placement since my arm is in the way for half the performance!"

Moog Subsequent 25 2-Note Paraphonic Synthesizer

Published on Jan 24, 2020 Perfect Circuit

"Moog's Subsequent 25 takes the form factor of the Sub Phatty and updates it with the sonic flavor of the Subsequent 37. Now with a high-headroom mixer, improved drive, and optional paraphonic operation, the Subsequent 25 covers far more ground than its predecessor.

The Subsequent 25 is great for monstrous bass lines and leads, with all the sonic depth and range one would expect from a Moog monosynth. Optional two-note paraphonic operation breaks it out of these roles and into entirely new territory—combined with the integrated Multidrive, Ladder Filter, and rich internal modulation, the Subsequent 25 can create a huge range of sounds. Coupled with its small footprint and ease of DAW integration, this makes the Subsequent 25 a perfect addition to nearly any performance or production environment.

Roland System 700 | Axiom

Published on Jan 24, 2020 Alex Ball

New overview video posted here.

"The System 700 from 1976 was the most expensive instrument Roland ever made. A comprehensive, semi-modular monster that was at the cutting edge at the time, the full system cost the equivalent of around £35,000 - £45,000 (around $45,000 - $50,000) and as they made so few of them; they have been known to sell for even more than that on the rare occasions that they emerge on the second hand market.

Huge thanks to the owner of this remarkable instrument for the very generous loan.

We have the main console and two of the “blocks” present but the full system has two further wing cabinets containing six additional VCOs, two further filters, three further VCAs, six further envelopes, another LFO, S/H, mixer and two further multiple jacks. In addition it has a twelve stage, three-channel sequencer that also acts as a switching mixer.

With the three blocks I borrowed I do have all of the modules present with the exception of the gate delay and I can use alternative sequencers in place of the original, so I feel this is a full representation of this marvelous instrument and what it can do.

Grendel RA-99 Grenadier – Official synth demo

Published on Jan 24, 2020 EA78751

"The Grendel RA-99 Grenadier is new for 2020 and continues boldly into the sound territory of the original RA-9 from 2015. This is an original and excellent all-analog synthesizer from Rare Waves that implements parallel formant synthesis with a triple-VCF filter bank (1x LPF, 2x BPF). Voice-like vowel tones, stabby and juicy alien acid sounds, eerie drone incantations, filtered noise percussion, dark electro basslines, pitched Miami bass drums, wispy analog leads and more are at the producer’s fingertips. This synth uses CV-Gate control and gives you multiple v/oct inputs to creatively stack the CV sources from your sequencers to elevate its melodic potential. The accurate single VCO has voltage-controlled wave shape, a sub-octave square wave, and a pink noise source for furry warmth. RA-99 also features a pair of multi-function modulation sources that change from envelope generator to LFO by pushing a button. As envelopes, they can be either Decay or Attack-Release, with precise exponential curves. As LFOs, they have variable symmetry for triangle-sawtooth shapes, also pulse wave and clock outputs. LFO rate and envelope time can be voltage controlled. A pushbutton lets you assign either modulator to the main volume VCA. Both of RA-99’s modulators include bipolar attenuators to add animation to the filter bank, plus patchable modulation outputs to drive the synth’s other parameters. Its assembled in the USA by Rare Waves LLC (Texas). Grendel RA-99 Grenadier is designed and supported by Eric Archer."

TOP 5 Synthesizer Apps 2019 | haQ attaQ

Published on Jan 24, 2020 Jakob Haq

"Here are my Top 5 favourite Synthesizer Apps from 2019! And one of my top picks will probably surprise recurrent haQ attaQ viewers. Maybe I missed a few, but to me it seems like there were way less new synth apps released compared in 2019 to previous years. But hey, Im not complaining because I had an easier time doing my selection for this list. Check it out!"

"Here's my entry for #jamuary2020. Thanks to Anthony Coates for co-writing and proofreading the lyrics on this one! :-) Digitone is sequencing the PEAK, CP and the EX5 and playing all of it's 4 FM tracks here.
I wanted to record the whole thing in one take, but found I needed to add some more drums (ARQ96) and piano (EX5) and a second vocal track / take after listening to the result."

littleBIGsynths Attending the NAMM show for the first time | A NAMM 2020 vlog

Published on Jan 24, 2020 littleBIGsynths

"Hey, guys! Come along with me on my first trip to the NAMM show... also my first vlog! 😊 I have wanted to attend a NAMM show for quite some time now, but never really had the chance to. So this Overall, the event was truly an awesome experience. It was definitely a bit overwhelming at times, with just so much to see and do: Checking out booths, demos and exhibits; running into recognizable faces; live music and performances, etc, etc. 😀

As I mentioned earlier, this was my first attempt at a vlog style video. With time and practice, I hope I will get better at it. 🤔 lol Anyways, thank you all for watching. I really appreciate it. 👊🙂"

"Includes manual and cassette with original presets

I bought this synth in 2016 and took a chance on the fact that a few of the keys were not functioning. I brought it to Ed Miller, who worked at Oberheim in the early 80s, to handle the repair. He called me back a few hours after I dropped it off and said the work was done. He said, 'You’re lucky. You got a good one.' All it needed was a few key contacts cleaned."

Roland CR-1000 Digital Drummer | Punchy and Tight

Published on Jan 23, 2020 Espen Kraft

"Rolands famous CR (Compu Rhythm) series of drum machines ended with this in 1986. A stripped down TR-505, but just as punchy and tight.

Presets only, but you can trigger the sounds over MIDI.

And since it can be had for coffee-money, pick it up fast if you see it for sale.

The demo track in the beginning of the video is done with only drum sounds from the CR-1000.

Thanks to Anders Enger Jensen for letting me keep this for so long!"
