Make Anything MPE: The Moog Subharmonicon and Logic Autosampler

Sensel

"We recently geared up with a @Moog Music Inc Subharmonicon to see how it might integrate well with the Sensel Morph. The Subharmonicon is really designed as a standalone hardware synth, with patching capabilities for modular integration. As a result, we found it difficult to do anything very different with the Morph. But recognizing the Subharmonicon's strengths, we turned to Logic Pro X's Autosampler - a brilliant piece of kit that is a great way to make anything work with MIDI Polyphonic Expression (MPE) control.

Topics:
00:00 - Introduction
01:12 - Play Notes with MIDI
01:36 - Control Moog with custom XYZ pads
3:05 - Use Logic Pro X Autosampler
3:18 - Setup External Instrument (MIDI to Moog)
3:50 - Setup Autosampler and Make A Sampler Instrument
5:40 - Play your new software synthesizer!
6:17 - Add MIDI Polyphonic Expression (MPE) to Logic Sampler
7:20 - Copy Settings between patches
8:39 - Make an MPE Synth in Ableton Live 11
9:48 - Add MIDI Polyphonic Expression (MPE) to Live Sampler
10:25 - Write Loop points in Live and Save to Sample!
10:58 - Conclusion!"

IK Multimedia to Inroduce Uno Synth Pro Desktop Analog Synthesizer

Update: Official demos here

It looks like a "Pro" version of the UNO Synth is coming. Priced at $649.99. Tons of pics below. Note the different side panels. Anyone ID the green faced eurorack modular?

Update: looks like there are two versions. One with touch keys and mod "strips", and one with standard keys and mod wheels.

Details:

UNO Synth Pro Desktop offers next-generation analog for everyone, with a dual-filter, 3-oscillator paraphonic design, 256 presets, a 64-step sequencer, and expanded CV/Gate and audio connections, all packed into a compact desktop unit.

A Wealth of Sounds
Create nearly any analog synth sound with three analog oscillators with continuously variable waveshape, pulse-width modulation, sync, oscillator FM and ring modulation, plus a white noise generator.

Pro Level, Dual-Filter Design
Both the original UNO 2-pole OTA multimode filter plus a SSI 2/4-pole LP filter with self-oscillation can be used in series or parallel with invertible phase for 24 different filter modes.

Massive Flexibility
Two full ADSR envelopes, for both filter and amplitude, plus two LFOs to create classic synth vibrato, wah and tremolo. A 16-slot modulation matrix for sophisticated modulation schemes, with both internal and external sources, including MIDI controllers.

Deep Onboard Effects
Four effect blocks: an analog overdrive circuit, plus 12 digital effects: modulation, delay and reverb. External signals can also be routed through these effects, with pre-effects filtering.

Powerful Presets and More
256 user-editable presets, a 64-step sequencer and a 10-mode arpeggiator. Plus, "chord mode" takes advantage of UNO Synth Pro's paraphonic design.

Advanced Connectivity
Two balanced stereo outputs plus headphone out. USB, MIDI I/O and assignable CV/Gate connections lets UNO Synth Pro interact with modular gear. An audio input allows access to the filter and FX section in addition to pass-through for daisy-chaining multiple units.

Features:
- Dual-filter paraphonic analog desktop synthesizer
- 3 discrete wave-morphing oscillators with PWN, synch, FM and ring mod
- Dual-state variable filters with 24 modes
- 256-user editable presets and 64-step sequencer with 80+ parameters
- USB / MIDI / CV / GATE I/O and audio input

JS Bach prelude from BWV 998, for Waldorf Iridium

Brittle stR music

"Originally for lute, this is the first movement of 'Prelude, Fugue and Allegro' of BWV 998 (from the Bach-Werke-Verzeichnis catalogue). It's produced in Logic using a single voice in the Iridium. The 3 oscillators are respectively a square wave, a wavetable and a 'kernel' (or FM synth). Velocity on a 12dB/oct filter envelope provides expression, and big tempo changes give rubato and pauses before recapitulations of the main theme. I've avoided my usual sweeping oscillator mods and other fun electronica artefacts for this one! More than with any other composer, Bach's music lends itself to instruments that were invented later - piano, guitar, synth etc - but a light touch works better IMO."

Ambient piece for phantom limb and generative modular synth (no talking)

Bertolt Meyer

"Generative ambient patch in which my phantom limb - my missing imagined left arm - controls the gate of a voice and the routing to the LZX Cyclops laser controller through tiny muscle signals that usually control my myoelectric prosthesis. Muscle EMG sensing is done with two ADDAC 303 muscle sensing modules that work really well once you find good settings. The patch is based on a Turing Machine that goes to a new random sequence after 16 repetitions of the given random sequence. The pitch CV goes through a 2hp Arp and subsequently through the ADDAC Intuitive Quantizer before being sampled with different trigger patterns with the excellent DivKid RND STEP. From there, the pitch branches off to three voices: A QU-Bit Chord, two Doepfer A-110s, and a MI Elements. The phantom limb does the gates for the two A-110s - it feels really weird, because I just have to think about moving the prosthesis THAT I AM NOT WEARING and the voice plays a note."

Sequential Introduces New Prophet-5 and Prophet-10 Desktop Modules

Title says it all. Press release follows:

Sequential Announces Prophet®-5 and Prophet®-10 Desktop Modules

San Francisco, CA—Jan 12, 2021—Fast on the heels of the reintroduction of its legendary Prophet-5 synthesizer, Sequential today announced that it has created a desktop version of the acclaimed instrument. As with the keyboard version, the desktop model will be available in both five- and ten-voice configurations, dubbed the Prophet-5 desktop module and Prophet-10 desktop module, respectively. They feature the same authentic vintage sound and front-panel controls as the Prophet-5 and Prophet-10 keyboards, but in a smaller form factor designed for portability and space-conscious studios.

“Our introduction of the Prophet-5 and Prophet-10 Rev 4 keyboards has been hugely successful. At the same time, a lot of people have been asking us for an easy way to fit them into a smaller studio space or into a touring rig,” commented Sequential founder and original Prophet-5 designer Dave Smith. “It was an easy decision to create a desktop module to fill that need. The great thing is, we managed to fit the same big, ballsy sound of the full Prophet-5 into a desktop model. It sounds every bit as awesome.”

Like the original, the new Prophet-5 and Prophet-10 modules feature two multi-waveform analog oscillators, analog resonant low-pass filters and amplifiers, and a filter and amplifier envelope per voice. Modulation is provided by a multi-waveshape LFO and Poly Mod, a ground-breaking modulation scheme for its time that allowed the filter envelope and oscillator B to be routed to a variety of destinations including filter cutoff frequency, oscillator A frequency, and oscillator A pulse width.

And just like the new Prophet-5/10 Rev 4 keyboards, the modules feature genuine Curtis VCOs and filters as used in the Prophet-5 Rev 3, as well as the Dave Rossum-designed SSI 2140 filter — the modern counterpart of the original SSM 2040 Rossum designed in the Prophet-5 Rev 1 and Rev 2. A Rev switch on the front panel allows users to switch between the two as desired.

Also present is the new Vintage knob, which loosens up the oscillators, filters, and envelopes from voice to voice as they typically are in vintage Prophet-5s. Users can dial in progressively more vintage character from a very stable “4,” as in Prophet-5 Rev4, all the way to “1,” as in Prophet-5 Rev1, which was the most temperamental of all Prophet-5s. The original factory sound set is included as well.

Other modern enhancements include velocity sensitivity and aftertouch to increase expressiveness, as well as MIDI and USB connectivity. Control voltage and gate ins/outs are also present for connecting modular synths and other gear. The new modules are housed in a premium-quality, steel case with hand-oiled sustainable black walnut heartwood trim.

Both modules will be available in February. The Prophet-5 desktop module has a US MAP of $2,499.
The Prophet-10 desktop module has a US MAP of $3,299.

Jamuary #12 - Dark Times (ft Soundplane & Eigenharp)

TheTechnobear

"Today's Jam features a passion of mine...two rare expressive instruments.
The Eigenharp Alpha by Eigen Labs (main shot) and the Madrona Labs Soundplane (inset as shown in other jams)

What I love about these instruments is you can use quite simple sounds and add the feeling with your touches, no need for automation when you can be the modulation :)

Why two expressive controllers?
simply because with expressive controllers everything is in 'how they feel'... they make you play differently - the Eigenharp is fast, precise... the Soundplane is more mellow, evolving.

The sound source in both cases is Aalto by Madrona Labs probably my favourite synth, which was built for expressive controllers like the Eigenharp and Soundplane, so is a 'natural fit'.
This paired up with my favourite reverbs from Vahalla DSP.

#Jamuary #Eigenharp #Soundplane

(1) It should be noted both the Eigenharp and Soundplane are controllers , in this case they are sending OSC, but can also send midi (mpe)"

Buchla Easel MIDI Test

tibetronica

"A MIDI test with the Buchla Easel. There were early reports of the Easel being faulty in receiving MIDI but I have found one workaround, which is to always send "MIDI Pressure" information along with note-on and note-off. The MIDI Pressure is reflected as pressure CV, and the Easel can take dense throughput.

これは「Buchla=ブクラ」というメーカーの「Easel」という機種です。中身はアナログ回路がぎっしり詰まっていますが、かなり高速の音符情報(MIDI)を受けても落ちません。テクノポップの時代にも生存可能!"

Waldorf Microwave 1 - Presets/Patches Demo

Sonic Freaks

"Presets are available here: https://tinyurl.com/microwave-presets

We have created 64 presets for the Waldorf Microwave 1 synthesizer. This hybrid wavetable synthesizer, with its analog filters, is a direct descendant of the famous PPG Wave 2.3. Both the Wave 2.3 and the Microwave 1 make use of wavetables, a new technology at the time that uses sampled waveforms through which the user can scroll through in real time, producing special sounds. Although released back in 1989 its rich feature set and complex sound makes it a very competitive and capable synth even today.

Unlike the PPG Wave 2.3, the Waldorf Microwave 1 suffered from the same issue as many late 80's synths….the lack of rotary knobs, making programming this advanced hybrid synthesizer quite difficult.

Sonic Freaks has created this fantastic collection of presets to take full advantage of the advanced and unique features of the Waldorf Microwave 1. In this presets collection you will find Dreamy Pads, Evolving Textures, Ambient Strings, Crystal Clear Bells, Thick Basses and Sweet Leads and much more. The presets are contemporary and vintage at the same time. They are very suitable for all kinds of (electronic) music

The collection includes 64 presets to revitalise your Waldorf Microwave 1 and get inspired to make great music."

Waldorf microQ, Q and Blofeld Reformation Soundset

Novaline Music

This one was spotted and sent in via Soviet Space Child.

"Reformation Soundset is a brand new wavetable based soundset with 100 patches that will blow your mind.
Novaline has experimented a lot with all the routing possibilities to reform the different waveforms and wavetables to make them sound interesting.

This soundset will be useful for any genre you¥re working with. By hearing the demo, you'll hear exactly why!

This soundset contains all from Leads, Keys, Plucks, Pads, Atmo, Strings and very fat Bass sounds.

All internal effects such as Distortion, Bitcrush, Delay, Chorus and Phaser are being used but not reverb.

Only External Effect being is Reverb with the plugin, Native Instruments Raum, with some Predelay to give some of the sounds some ambience to get the picture how it sound like in your productions or use.

In the demo you will hear some beats Novaline made to demonstrate how it sound like in a production with sidechain.

Reformation soundset is for the MICRO Q model, but works with Waldorf Q, Q+ and Blofeld models as I imported the microQ bank to qXr Editor and bloX Editor to convert the bank. Keep in mind that they will sound slightly different on those models.

Update: looks like this one is for sale:

via this auction

"This is vintage Roland Paraphonic 505 Synthesizer. The unit has been tested for operation, confirmed power on and have the sound, but probably will need a good maintenance to make it great again. Some sliders are a little bit hard to slide up and down.

The top area where the switches and the "Roland Paraphonic 505" logo has been recoat, it's more shinny and darker (black. Some rust also exists in the casing, please review the photos I've taken as part of my description about the physical condition of the unit. I've also made a video demo of the unit confirming the power on and sounding, I'm not a synth player so please bear with my playing :)

The RS-505 is the king of all '70s string synths, being the sister of the VC-330 Vocoder and mother of the classic RS-202. It combines strings, a polysynth, and an enormous, rumbling mono bass section that is known for rivalling that of the Moog Taurus. Includes a super lush quad BBD chorus with external input, the same circuit found in the highly sought after Roland Dimension D Chorus."

Hello! I can't find a PS5 yet, so I made this music cover of Demon's Souls :) As I find myself watching gameplay of Demon's Souls, I stumbled across this character creation music and absolutely fell in love with it! I really love melodic ambient music, especially with a dark undertone.

Also, if you're a follower of this channel, you may notice I have a new synth! The KORG Volca FM! I've always wanted an FM synthesizer and I ended up getting one for Christmas! I'm still getting used to it, but am happy to debut it with such an awesome video game music cover. I hope you enjoy it!"

These Are Complex Tides... | Mutable Instruments Dual Tides + Warps

Cinematic Laboratory

"I love complex oscillators because of the insane amount of sounds and timbres you can get from them. I noticed Mutable Instruments doesn't really have one. So I did some searching and found a tip from Emilie to use two Tides and Warps. Mais oui!

This video also features a test with two Plaits and Warps, which is also cool, but it doesn't give you the versatility of a real CO with all the outputs you can patch everywhere. However, the sounds you can get from it, is totally amazing because of all the weird sounds Plaits has to offer. Nothing 'classic' about it though!"
