Alison Tavel Biog
Alison Tavel is a filmmaker and music archivist, currently serving as Director of Archives for Nirvana and previously working with the Tom Petty Estate. Her work with archival material has included directing music videos, documentary projects, commercial spots and EPKs, as well as producing and overseeing archival content for major releases. She was a producer on the 2024 restoration of Cameron Crowe’s Heartbreakers Beach Party and an archival producer on the feature documentary Tom Petty: Somewhere You Feel Free. Earlier in her career, Alison worked in music management and supervision before moving into touring and studio support for artists including Grace Potter, Beck and Jenny Lewis. RESYNATOR is her feature directorial debut, which won the Audience Award following its premiere at SXSW. The film explores the story of the pioneering synthesiser created by Alison's father Don Tavel and its rediscovery decades later.

Synthetic Sound Labs announces Wave Oracle™, a multi-function signal visualization and learning instrument designed specifically for modular synthesizers. See and explore your sounds.

Wave Oracle™ combines oscilloscope, XY, spectrum analysis, tuning, metering, audio-responsive visualization and integrated learning functions in a single module. Four signal inputs allow several points in a synthesizer patch to remain connected simultaneously, with channel selection available within applicable modes.

Wave Oracle™ is designed to be easy to learn and use, without requiring a background in electronics or test equipment.

SCOPE
Wave Oracle™ can display signals from oscillators, envelopes, LFOs, modulation and complete voices.

The oscilloscope views these as voltage changing over time, revealing the actual shape and timing of a signal. Laboratory-style adjustable timebases, vertical scaling, positioning and triggering allow visualization and measurement of up to four independent synth signals at once.

XY
Plots two signals against one another to display phase and frequency relationships, modulation and Lissajous figures. XY uses Channels 1 and 2 as its X and Y signal sources.

FFT
Where SCOPE shows voltage over time, Wave Oracle™’s FFT modes reveal frequency content and how it changes over time. Multiple spectrum displays provide different views of fundamentals, harmonics, noise, filter response and the evolving spectral content of complex sounds and complete voices.

Automatic and manual display scaling accommodate signals ranging from individual oscillators to dynamic musical material.

TUNER
Measures frequency and musical pitch for oscillator tuning, matching pitches and checking oscillator tracking.

Let's start with Decay. This shapes the length of your kick, from tight little hits to long, booming tails.

Impact controls the punch of the voice, letting you add more weight and aggression to every hit.

The Tone switch gives you three different flavors of the kick, including clean, crunchy, and wavefolded options.

And if you want even more dirt, the Saturation switch adds three levels of drive to the output.

Pitch gives you another way to completely change the character of the voice. And a quick press of the Pitch encoder mutes the voice.

The inputs give you a way to duck an incoming signal with the kick, making it easy to carve out some space every time it hits.

Kick is just one of several percussion voices available for Legio. You'll also find Snare, Tom, Klang, Cymbal, Bos, Marimba, and Tymp, plus a whole collection of synth voices and effects to swap in with a USB connection.

"ARC’s D6 is a 3hp pseudorandom logic generator that models rolling a six sided die. When a pulse is sent to the 'roll' input, one of the six outputs goes high (approx 6v). This logic high is held until another pulse is sent to 'roll.'

The D6 is a built on 20th century CMOS technology - no code, no firmware, no microcontrollers. Output 3 and 4 have a higher chance of being rolled than outputs 1, 2 and 5, 6. It is possible that the same output is rolled on consecutive pulse inputs, in which case no change to the high logic output will be noted.

Add indeterminacy to your patches, or several D6 can be patched in an analogue computer to automate dice rolling for tabletop roleplaying games like Shadowrun... I guess?"

1 hour chill synth jazz improv on Novation Circuit Tracks

"Yay! Finally, I don't have to play anything by myself anymore! Just press start and stop. And no, it's no masterpiece and very lazy and repetetive, I think it's interesting that every single beat in that whole hour is unique and different from the next - it never repeats. Same goes for the visuals: especially the lava lamp makes it that every single frame in that video also is unique. Although no AI was used in this production, IT was heavily involved: the second track of the NCT plays its notes randomized. So what's the difference between this and using AI? Well, at least I (a human being) gave the NCT a group of notes and chords to play randomly, instead of just typing something into a prompt. Also, it's a test: will a long video like this, playing interchangeable background muzak, perform better than my other stuff? And to the fellow Circuiteers: the patch you are hearing is my attempt at creating some kind of a piano-like sound on the NCT. If you want me to share that, let me know in the comments."
