2012 Apocalypse Not!
2012 Apocalypse Not! from Atomic Shadow on Vimeo.
"This is a soundtrack for the Mayan inspired 2012 non-event on December 21st. It features EMW-200, DotCom, SSL (DDVCO! Thank you Mrs. Shadow and Merry Christmas), STG, Krisp1 devices. It also makes use of an Eico sine wave generator with various effects including some pedals on the floor. It is a live improvisation captured from two angles.
The final film was created from my raw footage by filmmaker Jeff Gustafson using stock footage from atomic bomb films of the 50s. His was the genius idea to run the bombs backwards, thus underlining the NOT part of the title.
See you all in 2013!

Atomic Shadow - The World Of Tomorrow
The World Of Tomorrow from Atomic Shadow on Vimeo.
"This piece features EMW-200, DotCom, STG, Krisp 1 modules along with sine wave oscillators, Moog ring mod, and various effects. Michael Dodds assembled this film from footage that was shot while recording the piece on 11/23/12. I think he captured the spirit of the piece beautifully.
At the very end of the piece you get a very brief glimpse of the new look for Atomic Shadow. Very brief."

Atomic Shadow - Drums Against The Machine
Atomic Shadow - Drums Against The Machine from Atomic Shadow on Vimeo.
"I set up a self playing S/H patch on the EMW-200 and ran the result through the STG Sea Devil and Krisp1 ring mod. All of the raw sound is coming from the EMW-200, the Krisp1 mini LFO was controlling the filter. Part of the signal made it through the Strymon El Capistan echo pedal. The improvised drums were then performed live with the patch on the V-Drums. The film was then finished by Micky Dodds who also made the film for February-Moon Of Ice from the Twelve Full Moons album."

Atomic Shadow - Drums Against The Machine with EMW-200, STG & Krisp1
"I took a couple of patch adapters and cross patched the EMW-200 with the MU modules in the Command Center rack. An EMW sample hold pattern is being fed to the STG Sea Devils filter, the filter is being modulated by the Krisp1 LFO. Another EMW oscillator is being ring modulated by the S/H pattern with the Krisp1 Ring Modulator module. I played some improvised drums over the top of it with the V-Drums. Inevitable video to follow." via Atomic Shadow, via Rod Mitchell on Facebook

Krisp1 Ring Mod Demo by Atomic Shadow
Ring Mod Demo from Atomic Shadow on Vimeo.
www.atomicshadow.com
An improvisation featuring the MU ring Modulator from Krisp1, two Hewlett Packard series 200 sine wave generators and the El Capistan tape echo pedal from Strymon.
This ring mod was based on the Arp2500/2600 design. According to the Krisp1 website- "Each input has its own differing non-linearities or imperfections. This greatly adds to the character of the resultant output."
I think that is correct. Turning up the input levels create interesting changes in the timbre of the output. This is a ring modulator with a ton of personality.

Oakley Krisp1 EFG Deluxe Ready to Ship
"first few in stock ready to ship"
"An envelope follower takes an audio input and converts it into a control voltage. This control voltage will rise and fall with the overall volume of the input signal. The louder the input, the bigger the output of envelope follower. The Oakley EFG has a fully variable speed CV output thanks to its internal four stage slew generator. Set to fast the CV output will respond very quickly to incoming audio and is therefore suitable for tracking fast moving cymbal and hi-hat patterns. Set it more slowly and it is more useful in processing overall audio volume. By using the CV output to control VCAs and VCFs it is very easy to create synchronised patterns that keep in perfect time with a drum machine or other musical input.
Another feature of the Oakley EFG, is the provision of a gate extractor. This part analyses the peaks in the music and creates a gate type signal in time with these peaks. This can be used to trigger envelope generators in time with an external drum loop or click track. Two rotary controls, threshold and response, enable you to get clean gate signals from all sorts of input material.
The Oakley EFG now comes with a wide range three stage input pre-amplifier. This allows guitars and other unbalanced external instruments to be processed simply. You can use this output for driving other modules.
This is the Deluxe version of the module utilises a built in Little-Lag module
The EFG,has three LEDs. One showing input overload, one for gate status, and one for a visual indication of the slewed CV output.
Current draw is around +50mA and -40mA.
Supplied with 18" power cord"

BLUE ZTVCO DRY DEMO & Surrounding Controversy
YouTube Uploaded by bluelantern320 on Jan 3, 2012
Update 10/4/2013: I heard from Ian Fritz and the controversy is over. Blue Lantern no longer offers the ZTVCO. That said, BL posts will resume.
This one, which seems to be a reoccurring theme with Blue Lantern, comes with a good dose of controversy. You might recall from a few years ago BL got into a bit of heat selling MIDIBox SIDs on eBay. MIDIBox explicitly forbids the commercial resale of MIDIBox SIDs. Blue Lantern stopped and went into producing affordable eurorack based modules and systems.
This latest controversy surrounds the source of design for the new BLUE ZTVCO. You might recall from the comments in this previous post, the design of that prototype module appeared to be a copy of Ian Fritz's Teezer (TZFM Saw VCO debuted Sep'08) design. Ian Fritz's modules are available via The Bride Chamber and Elby Designs.
In short:
1. Is the BLUE ZTVCO based on Ian Fritz's design?
2. If so, to what extent?
3. If so, is it legal?
4. If so, is it fair and does it matter?
The answer to 1 and 2 will not be known until someone gets a hand on the ZTVCO and reverse engineers it. I asked BL if he would be willing to provide the schematics to put the issue to rest and he replied no. He said people can reverse engineer it when it it's available and he is sure someone will. The answer to 3 is quite possibly so. There is currently a good thread on the subject on the electro-music.com forum here. The answer to 4 depends on you. My personal opinion is that it is not fair and it definitely does matter. Whether legal or not, I view it as stealing. These designs do not come out of thin air. They take time and talent and sometimes years to produce. You will see some insight on this in regards to Ian's Teezer design from him directly below. When someone makes their designs available, credit should be given.
The following is a response from Blue Lantern in regards to the claims made against him. The most important thing to read out of his points below is "3. This is not a clone, this vco is a beast in it's own cage."
