BLUE ZTVCO DRY DEMO & Surrounding Controversy

YouTube Uploaded by bluelantern320 on Jan 3, 2012

Update 10/4/2013: I heard from Ian Fritz and the controversy is over. Blue Lantern no longer offers the ZTVCO. That said, BL posts will resume.

This one, which seems to be a reoccurring theme with Blue Lantern, comes with a good dose of controversy. You might recall from a few years ago BL got into a bit of heat selling MIDIBox SIDs on eBay. MIDIBox explicitly forbids the commercial resale of MIDIBox SIDs. Blue Lantern stopped and went into producing affordable eurorack based modules and systems.

This latest controversy surrounds the source of design for the new BLUE ZTVCO. You might recall from the comments in this previous post, the design of that prototype module appeared to be a copy of Ian Fritz's Teezer (TZFM Saw VCO debuted Sep'08) design. Ian Fritz's modules are available via The Bride Chamber and Elby Designs.

In short:

1. Is the BLUE ZTVCO based on Ian Fritz's design?
2. If so, to what extent?
3. If so, is it legal?
4. If so, is it fair and does it matter?

The answer to 1 and 2 will not be known until someone gets a hand on the ZTVCO and reverse engineers it. I asked BL if he would be willing to provide the schematics to put the issue to rest and he replied no. He said people can reverse engineer it when it it's available and he is sure someone will. The answer to 3 is quite possibly so. There is currently a good thread on the subject on the electro-music.com forum here. The answer to 4 depends on you. My personal opinion is that it is not fair and it definitely does matter. Whether legal or not, I view it as stealing. These designs do not come out of thin air. They take time and talent and sometimes years to produce. You will see some insight on this in regards to Ian's Teezer design from him directly below. When someone makes their designs available, credit should be given.

The following is a response from Blue Lantern in regards to the claims made against him. The most important thing to read out of his points below is "3. This is not a clone, this vco is a beast in it's own cage."

Bridechamber to Handle MOTM DIY

via Paul Schreiber of Synthesis Technology, aka MOTM:

"Beginning Thursday Sept. 1st, Scott Deyo of Bridechamber (www.bridechamber.com) will be taking over my 'MOTM 2.0' side of the business.

These are the 'DIY' parts: the blank pc boards, panels, rails, connector boards, etc. I will still handle the assembled module orders.

I will be transferring this inventory via Fed-Ex ground on Tuesday. It will take a few days to travel from Texas to Minnesota. Scott has the web pages ready to so 'live' on the 1st. The pricing will be *exactly* the same.

If you have a current order, or place an order by tomorrow, I will still ship it. But orders placed after this will be shipped by Bridechamber.

I will have notification on the site and on the ordering pages to redirect inquires to Bridechamber on the 1st.

There are some items that are low in inventory and Scott will not have them immediately. They are: MOTM-20 power cables, MOTM-490 DIY parts and MOTM-800 DIY parts. Also, he will have limited BR1 and BR-15 brackets until my reorder arrives in ~ 18 days. It's going to take a bit of back-and-forth to get everything accounted for and everyone happy.

Scott is doing all of us a great favor by doing this, as this will free up more time for me to address the assembled/kit backlog. Please email me if you have any worries or concerns.

YUSynth Saw Animator D.I.Y Module

YouTube Uploaded by kenzie2029 on May 13, 2011

"Here is my first DIY module for my modular synthesizer. It was made from a kit I bought from Bridechamber and the panel was custom built in the synthesizers.com format which matches the vintage Moog modular synthesizer.

The Module is called the YUSynth Saw Animator. Here is the description from Yusynths website: The Saw Animator module is a very interesting module when you whish to get that FAT sound, usually obtained with two or more sawtooth VCOs, but you are short of VCOs. You can get this typical sound with only one sawtooth VCO, thanks to Bernie Hutchins (JAES, 1981). The Digisound 80 has this wonderful module and Scott Bernardi designed a version of its own. The present module is a somehow simplified but yet efficient version. To get the best of this module, it must be used in conjunction with a mixer. I chose not to integrate a mixer within the module in order to benefit from the dry outputs which are very useful when used with a LFO instead of a VCO. When used with a sawtooth LFO and inputing fixed CVs in the MOD inputs, one can achieve some interesting phase shifted modulators such as quadrature modulation. Well the possibilities are numerous and it's up to your imagination."

Dual Yusynth Filters Demo

YouTube via davidryle | Feb 27, 2011 |

"Yves Usson's Minimoog transistor ladder filter module from a Bridechamber.com kit.
Two different component builds. One with the 2210 transistor arrays and the second with three pairs of matched BC547 NPN's. They sound similar but the calibrations may be a little off in relation to one another. The 2210 transistor array sounds smoother to me. The discrete transistor pairs sound thicker in the resonant ring. Probably due to the slightly less matched pairing. All caps are within 1% in the ladder but each module contains different vendor parts for the capacitors.
The front panels are different too. The left module is silk screened graphics, and was bought used. The right module was engraved with a high speed CNC milling machine in my shop. The font is not the best but I plan to improve on it for future projects.
Running these modules in parallel is really interesting. I have another video I made of that. I'll post it later. I can't really say whether the clones are truly close to a Minimoog filter or not. I don't own one and it's been years since I've played one. Also there are different makes of Minimoog so the filters all don't sound the same exactly anyway. Regardless, I think these filters sound very good and am pleased with the build. Yves is quite a good designer and I feel fortunate to be able to use his design here.
The left module with the 2210's is a component and PCB kit from Bridechamber.com. The right module was just the PCB from them but I rounded up all the components. Thanks to Scott Deyo for rushing these kits out to me. This was a real fun project and great learning exercise."

Random Gates Demo.mov

YouTube via davidryle | January 25, 2011 |
audio comes in at :41
"Yves Usson's Random Gates module from a Bridechamber kit. This has a 5U MOTM style front panel and the stooge bracket is too large for my cabinet. I have an MU panel being made by Big Blue Wave to replace this.
The RG module is clocked from the oscillator on board the Q960 sequential controller from synthesizers.com. In turn the eight outputs from the RG is sent back into the in stages on the Q960. This forces each related stage to fire as the RG randomly selects them.
The staccato mode has a trigger that is too fast for the Q960 so the sequencer tends to add two stages together in that mode. When in legato mode the overlap goes away but as a gate is extended from the Random Gates module the Q960 will step forward to the next stage.
The module was my first build in many years. It was fairly easy and took about 4 hours to put together. I had a few things to straighten out in the end but it all went pretty well. The kit was very complete but I added some parts such as the LED sockets and some IC sockets for the chips.
The Q119 sequencer is also playing in random mode. The function is entirely internal on that module. Both sequencers are sending voltage to four oscillators. Two ring modulators are used for each pair of oscillators. One row of the Q960 along with an LFO is managing the cv panner module. A row of the Q119 is sent to the Sea Devils filter for accents.

CGS / Bridechamber Suboscillator

via this auction

From the CGS site:

"Some ideas on how to use this module:

Fed by two VCO's it can operate as two independant sub-oscillators, with optional ring modulated outputs.

Running both sub-oscillators from the same VCO, tuned to a fifth over the base note you require, and with the prescaller set to divide by 3, it is possible to create harmonies. An unusual effect here is that the ring modulated outputs give a fatter chord-like sound that remains indepenant of minor or major scales, allowing "one finger chords" which can be handy when used with a related sequencer driven bass line.

Careful mixing of the ring modulated output with one channel's divided output results in some interesting sounds, especially if one of the channels is being driven from a low frequency oscillator. Running like this, it could be considered to be a "harmonic sequencer"

Running both inputs from the same LFO/clock signal, and feeding the mixed output into the 1V/oct input of a VCO gives you a pattern based sequencer, where the prescaler, ring modulated outputs, etc., all have a bearing on the pattern. Quite interesting patterns can be created this way. Each knob of course varies part of the overall structure, instead of a single note as per a regular step sequencer."

Module is MOTM / 5U high by 3U wide, requires standard +/- 15v MOTM power supply. Includes power cable and black mounting screws."

CGS / Bridechamber Event Sequencer

via this auction

"Read more here:
http://www.bridechamber.com/bridechamber.com/C_Event_Seq.html

and here:
http://cgs.synth.net/modules/index.html#cgs28

The Event Sequencer will sequence audio or control voltages, and when clocked with a high frequency is an excellent 8 step wave shaper (kind of like a DoubleDeka).

The mix control allows an audio signal to be mixed with the outputs. I normalled ~8v to the switching lug of the mix in jack so the mix knob also acts as a transpose control when sequencing cv's.

I used a center off switch for the direction control. The center position stops the clock. It bounces a bit, but it's really nice to have a sequencer that can stop.

This module includes the programmable gate bus. Normally the LED's would be where the switches are. The extra jack below the stage 1 pot is the gate bus out jack.

Module is MOTM / 5U high by 4U wide, requires standard +/- 15v MOTM power supply. Includes power cable and black mounting screws."

"This is an example of my (2) Music From Outer Space Soundlab Pluses that I recently finished. The SL on the right is sending LFO and AR to the CV inputs on the SL on the left. The Moog cp251 is being used as a mult and also the LFO is slowly sweeping the VCF CV on the left SL. Theres is also a AR signal being sent to trigger the SH-101 and from the 101 CV out back into SL 2s oscillator CV. Both of the Soundlabs are using the S&H function as well...

This was recorded in Ableton with a little verb and compression. This was just a patch making beautiful soundscapes not a musically piece.

PCBs for the Soundlab can be found at Musicfromouterspace.com

front panels were designed by mike at Planetsynth

Construction by me (Rico)"

Video 5:
"Heres a little spur of the moment test I did with my recently finished MFOS 10 step sequencer. The sequencer is triggering AS Europa thru trigger sync and the Europa is running the Access Virus TI Snow, the MAM ADX1, and the TR606 Exfade mk2 by midi. The synthesizers.com modular, and 2 MFOS Soundlab Plus Mini Synths are being controlled by the sequencers cv / gate outs. This was done to see how everything would sync to the sequencer and meant as a written piece of music. The sequencer has 3 cv outs, gate out and trigger out. If you have ny questions feel free to leave them in the comments. I also used an EH Memory Man for reverb...

This was done to see how everything would sync to the sequencer and not meant as a written piece of music. If you have ny questions feel free to leave them in the comments.

The Soundlabs and the 10 Step were built by me but I still have a few bugs here and there to work out, for the most part though Im very pleased with them.

There were also a few clicks and pops in the bounce that Im trying to track down. There was no clipping of any of my outputs throughout the signal chain and I am not too sure where they are coming from.

Thank you for your comments Sorry bout the shaky hands and the dangling camera cord!!!!"
