NuEVI Wireless Option - Mark Steiner

Published on Jun 26, 2018 Mark Steiner

"Stunts performed on this video will void the warranty. We all know Don Cagen played EVI to a live dolphin show, so the only way to beat that was to play a wireless NuEVI while riding a dolphin.

There is now an option to have ultra fast wireless midi with the NuEVI. It's built right in and uses the same battery power already there.

This demo gets irresponsibly intense near the end. Viewer discretion is advised. The stunts performed

Special thanks to my technician/assistant, Christa Steiner."

NuEVI playing MicroBrute - Mark Steiner

Published on Jun 10, 2018 Mark Steiner

"NuEVI from Berglund Instruments playing Arturia's MicroBrute directly via midi. I'm also working on fully patched modular sounds, MatrixBrute and Roland SE-02 demo videos with the NuEVI (coming soon).

With the latest update for the MicroBrute, the pitch bend and mod wheel midi no longer interfere (caused bad zippering sounds). Before this, midi control from a wind synth didn't sound very good (CV was GREAT though).

Now is sounds very smooth and great for a wind synth. You must drive the filter using the mod wheel, as the MicroBrute has very limited midi in. Sadly, exposing analog tones like this on Youtube does tend to add a little distortion at times, but you still get a good idea of the amazing tone this synth can get...in a fully clean way.

But it's a very inexpensive true VCO Analog Synth and has a Nyle Steiner filter. It sounds great.

For updates and wait list for the incredible NuEVI, email: TheNuEVI (at) gmail.com.

Mark & Nyle Steiner - NuEVI from Berglund Instruments - Day One

Published on May 31, 2018 Mark Steiner

"Nyle Steiner, virtuoso and inventor of the EVI, day one with the NuEVI. Video of his first in-person impressions, testing and lots of playing. Nyle has given his full blessing to this great instrument's creation and has assisted as an official consultant.

It was a special and legendary experience to recently deliver to Nyle his own NuEVI... which came all the way from the brilliant programmer/designer/musician, Johan Berglund in Sweden.

We talked, tested and explored, and playing the instrument was so engaging, we kept getting distracted and just enjoyed the music... so there is a lot to see and hear. The date was 5/23/2018.

Thank you, Steve Anderson for starting the 'Save the EVI' movement and to Johan Berglund for creating this amazing instrument... the NuEVI."

My 1st NuEVI Demo - Mark Steiner

"Berglund Instruments NuEVI demo with built in midi rotator. All sounds are digial instruments in Logic. Analog and modular demo soon to come. Endless thanks to Nyle Steiner, Johan Berglund, Steve Anderson, James Ingenito, and Robo Sax. For updates and to be on the waiting list, please email TheNuEVI@gmail.com. Please help us keep the EVI from becoming extinct by telling your trumpet player friends... and why not... even tuba, euphonium, French horn... or anyone who just wants to play one of the most amazing instruments to recently emerge on Earth."

Steiner Synthesizer SN 5618

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

This is actually the Steiner Microcon which paired with the Steiner EVI (Electronic Valve Instrument), however according to this post "the Microcon works perfectly alone, without the EVI connected. It could be easily included in a complex analog synth setup, adding the unique original Steiner Parker sound from its very compact but versatile box."

I'm not sure what voltage these work with so who knows how well these would track with modern modular gear.  If you know, feel free to comment.

FH-1 as a Digital OSC - Mark Steiner

Published on Mar 13, 2016 Mark Steiner

"FH-1 LFO and Sequencer driving light and sound.

Texture Time!

I know it's a taste thing and there are some incredible digital modules out there, but I've struggled getting into them.

But I'm learning I like them when used for things that exploit the edges (as apposed to digital emulating smooth analog forms). So nice wave form mixes that included some squares and even with drifting pulse width. And now even sequencers, effectively creating flexible super squares. These are great textures that remind me of 8-bit/chiptune stuff and crunchy modem noise type things.

The FH-1 clocks so fast that it makes such digital forms is a really great way, and with very in-depth controls that get you DEEP into the details of the wave.

Raw skeleton of exploration here with the FH-1, as I'm just using 1 or 2 of the 8 outputs and only controlling pitch.

Imagine how much more in-depth it can be also sequencing filters and other modules and running these through tubes and warm or dirty analog VCA's. I've done some of this already and loving the surprise that the FH-1 offers with it's amazing rate of clocking and responding to clocking.

I've planned to and not yet explored digital OSC direction the Silent Way, and then ran into this. Still excited all the more to what Silent Way will be capable of with this direction, considering it's sample-accurate resolution."

Alien Silent Night - Mark Steiner - Artemis & EVI

Published on Dec 23, 2014 Mark Steiner

"My arrangement of Silent Night. Filmed performances of a few unusual synths. The very incredible Sean Halley played acoustic guitar. I play a "Martenot" style synth with breath control and now light optics that I made called The Artemis. I also play Steiner EVI, a wind synth my uncle Nyle Steiner invented. And I play a toy school bus. I use an MRT Breath Controller with the Artemis and Alesis Andromeda."

Martian Devil Chickens - Trogotronic 679m Demo - Mark Steiner

Published on Jul 19, 2014 Mark Steiner

"Nothing is input (CV or sound) into the 679 in this demo.

The 679 sound and CV is routed to an Animodule DD Dual VCA. This causes the 679's wave form to control the panning of it's own sound and really draws a nice sound image across the stereo spectrum.

The reverb is Valhalla Shimmer.

At about 13 minutes in, the sound is also routed through a Doepfer A-125 Voltage Controlled Phase Shifter, whose phase is also CV'd at various levels by the same 679 output.

All live adjustments on the module knobs.

This is a rediculously long demo, and it may be good to just click through here and there to get an idea of some possibilities. I included my whole exploration take here as it's the kind of thing I'd like to hear when considering a module.

Love the 679.

You definitely discover sounds more than design them with this creature.

I love the nice vactrol and tube sound with this module."

Fractional Rack Mdlr Jam

Published on Mar 30, 2014 ISOTROPOSPHERE·124 videos

"Finally filled the last empty space in this completely DIY fractional rack modular synthesizer that I built.

She started life from the last few pieces of Purpleheart wood I had of which the frame and side panels are made from this. The perforated steel and aluminum bottom panel I had to painstakingly bend to fit the side cheeks. They got rid of the brake from the shop. :-( The power is from Paia as well as a pre-amp module, a balanced modulator (ring mod) and a mixer, left to right in video. This is followed by my custom MOTM version of the Bi-n-Tic module converted for frac rack use and finally the Synthcube Steiner microcon module for frac. Drums are coming from the Korg ES-1, the Bi-n-Tic is being fed audio from the SynthTech Cloud Generator which it and the Microcon are being sequenced by the C&G Melody Mill. All not in synchronization but it was sounding cool. Enjoy."

Lifeform Blues - Wobble Bar demo - Keyboard & EVI duet - Mark Steiner

Published on Jan 19, 2014 Mark Steiner·17 videos

"This prototype was inspired by the natural vibrato accessible on Nyle Steiner's EVI (wind syth). For years I have wished a similar expression could be done with a standard keyboard.

Adding natural, human controlled vibrato is the biggest benefit here, especially while keeping both hands on the keys, but you can also do some good bends and other things.

This expression bar is held firm between most standard key sized keyboards and a stand. You play it with your palm or wrist while still keeping fingers on the keys.

Though I often use breath control on keyboards and other things, on this keyboard solo I intentionally did it with no breath, to show how important the vibrato is as well. The dynamics are a very slow lfo on brightness/filter and an occasional mod wheel change. There's also velocity sensitivity but not much.

I eventually bring in an EVI part for a duet that really shows the similarity of vibrato on the two instruments, which are played quite differently, and thus bring very different expression and note structure/approach to synthesis."
