It has MIDI in so that you can control it from a keyboard, DAW, or anything else that produces MIDI

Elektron Sidstation

via this Reverb listing

"The legendary SID Station is a powerful synth that uses two of the famous SID chips (of Commodore 64 fame) to produce complex and rich sounds that range from what you would expect from chiptunes to more sonically adventurous modular style sounds. A very unique sound to add to the toolkit, for sure!"

Midibox MB6582 Maxed Out with Eight SID 8580's C64 Chips

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this listing, also on Reverb

"Midibox MB6582 Maxed Out with eight SID 8580's C64 chips, MIDI capable. Includes original C64 power adaptor.

Condition is Used and it is DIY. It's maxed out with eight 8580R5 SIDs. They are noisy. Beautiful blue panel from Julian. LED's though not too bright. A nice illuminated fan on the back with the "overdrive" pots. Loaded with latest firmware. Has the clear custom plexi window to protect the LCD. The encoders do tend to "bounce" but from my understanding it's normal, and totally manageable if you don't twist too quickly. Sold as is. Sid heaven! Why build your own when you can buy this one?"

X1L3 - AY300 / YM300 - Sanxion demo - Eurorack modules

video upload by X1L3

"A valiant attempt from the humble AY3-8910 and YM2149 at pulling off part of the Sanxion loader music from the Commodore 64. Written in 1984 by Rob Hubbard for the SID chip.

Quick demo of a couple of new modules built around the relics that are the AY and YM. With support from some real SID drums to drive it. It's not a bad attempt.

Two three voice stacks. No vca/vcf support modules.

AY does the bass and additional noise percussion.

YM runs the melody and hops over to the bass line to follow the AY and prevent it from droning when it would be technically idle if i had a vca in line..

The internal modulators can be used to generate a kind of 'SID voice', but in this limited hook up they're not used here.

Will probably revisit it when my rig is free and i can be bothered to figure out all the bendy bits of the lush melodic part about a third of the way into the original πŸ™‚πŸ•ΉπŸ“ΊπŸ”₯"

Sunday Jam #55 : Halloween special : 4am again with visualisations

video upload by MIDI IN

After last week's effort I'm kicking back a bit this week and have spent the time on a visualisation. The music is something I first posted in 2020 [video below], at that time with a compilation of some spooky C64 and Vic20 games.

0:00 intro
0:16 talking about Dr.VIP 2040 board
0:42 talking about the visualisation
2:05 the track

"4am" - Original music, with Spooky Vic20 and C64 games (listed in description)

video upload by MIDI IN

"Original spooky music, all sounds are produced by a real C64 (6581 SID). Accompanied by me playing some of my current favourite games on Vic20 and C64.

This time I used the C64 as a midi instrument (via Datel MIDI cart and my own software) and recorded around 30 sounds separately, and mixed them using minimal post-processing (a little reverb and eq).

All of these games have their own music, by better musicians than me. This isn't an attempt to deprecate their music. I've enjoyed the games and the visuals make a great accompaniment to this piece of music.

I am a fan of using real hardware and usually play these games on original computers. However, I don't have a capture device and pointing a camera at the screen looks crap, so I resorted to emulators for the purposes of making the gameplay footage.

Games shown:
Zombie Calavera Prologue, Vic20, from Digital Monastery https://majikeyric.itch.io/zombie-cal...

Pumpkid, Vic20 from Hewco https://hewco64.itch.io/pumpkid

The Isle of the Cursed Prophet, C64 from Icon 64 https://psytronik.itch.io/cursed-prop...

Luna, C64 from Shallan https://shallan64.itch.io/luna"

Sunday Jam #54 : Music for an imaginary puzzle game - plus!

video upload by MIDI IN

"After deciding that my original idea was a complete disaster, I returned to something I've developed several times in the past. This time I've given it the rock treatment.

I first showed this tune played on a dual-SID C64 [1st video below]

And then using MIDISID [2nd video below]

0:49 what I've done today

Puzzled : music for dual-SID C64

video upload by MIDI IN

"Another piece of original Dual-SID music. I'm starting to doubt the wisdom of writing long ponderous intros, so I won't think any less of you if you skip forward 30s to where the bass and percussion action starts.

My 16-channel MIDI to 6-channel SID voice music player is improving . The sound for this video is captured straight from my sixtyclone which you can see in the video. The music is actually being generated by Logic Pro on a Mac and sent to the C64 via MIDI (Datel MIDI cart)."

Puzzled MIDISID demo 2

video upload by MIDI IN

"I've been unlisting some early MIDISID videos which show MIDISID as a prototype - it's come a long way and is now a commercial product: https://peacockmedia.software/midisid/

I like this tune and decided to re-shoot the video and re-record the audio using some better MIDISID sounds. If you like this or any of my tunes, and would like to use the music for free - you are welcome, as long as you credit me and give a link to my channel. Better still, contact me and I'll provide a good quality audio file."

Walkabout at the Synthesized event, Cambridge

video upload by MIDI IN

"I wasn't able to do the usual musical Sunday video this week, I was at the Synthesized event at the Centre for Computing History in Cambridge.
Tony the organiser had caught everyone for interviews which will be on the museum's own channel here: (link when available)
So I just picked a quiet moment for a walkabout to show the variety of musical technology on display."

Elektron SID Station SN F10100780-81

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this listing

"This VERY RARE Sid Station MOS 6581 Synth by Elektron is a unique synthesizer with a rich history. The device was originally designed as a tribute to the sound chip of the Commodore 64, the MOS 6581 SID. It has since evolved into a powerful stand-alone synthesizer with a distinct sound. Unit is in near-mint cosmetic condition and I’ve pointed out any scratches in the photos. Sounds and works perfectly.

Featuring a variety of functions and controls, this synthesizer is perfect for musicians and producers looking to create authentic vintage C64 sounds. Whether you're using it in a studio or live performance setting, the Sid Station MOS 6581 Synthesis by Elektron is as authentic as it gets.

The sound of SidStation is, of course, very similar to that of the original Commodore 64. The SID chip is well known for being noisy. By design, the oscillators never stop outputting signal—even while not in use. It's this flaw, however, that is part of the character and sound of the SID chip. Tuning stability on this unit’s particular chip is the best I’ve ever heard.

The SidStation is capable of producing all the waveforms of the C64, Triangle, Saw, Pulse, Mix (which is a mix between Saw and Pulse) and variable Noise. Besides this is the synth, a 4-part LFO-modulation system which can be used with Lowpass, Highpass, Bandpass and various combinations of these filters (including a Notchfilter). All of these are controllable by the four knobs on top of the SidStation."

Therapsid - why to love the 6581 sid chip

video upload by Avrilcadabra

"Such an amazing filter.

Hi , I was just practicing writing on Sid Factory II (testing ASID don't think this build is live yet), which is controlling the Therapsid via an elektron TM-1 midi interface (didnt have turbo on here), Therapsid was provided by Twisted Electrons many moons ago.

I Think this sort of thing is why Sid chips in particular the 6581's are so hard to emulate or make replacements of."
