Korg DW8000 - A Classic 1985 Hybrid Digital+Analog Synth - Demo and Review
Published on Jan 11, 2020 Extralife
"A demo and review of the Korg DW8000, a hybrid polysynth from 1987. It combines sampled-wave DCOs with analog filters and unique six-stage envelopes for a stunningly capable and versatile keyboard synth that remains highly usable today. Its somewhat clunky interface is improved a great deal by the addition of a Stereoping controller. In this video I share some of my favorite patches and features as well as my thoughts on how this synth compares to the others today."

2019/10 - Pearl SC-40 ... 512 sounds
Published on Oct 6, 2019 Stereoping
"A quick run through all the 256 sounds of my Pearl SC-40. I used the trigger inputs instead of midi because the midi-triggernote is saved in each sound (!) and they are completely different throughout the kits.
Then i loaded the 4 factory preset banks and recorded these 4 banks containing another 256 sounds. Short break between the bank-switching for not missing a sound.
Between the 2 recordings there is a part showing how to load the audiofile through the Cassette input: start the audio, then press ENTRY on the CASSETTE/LOAD page. Pressing ENTRY before the audio is started will result in "Error 10 - level to low" (display shows: E-10) interrupting the LOAD procedure."

Synth Programmer for Waldorf Pulse
Published on Sep 25, 2019 Stereoping
"Demo for some of the Pulse Programmer's features like OCTAVE buttons, DRIVE pot, E-PATCHES, easier access to Modulation Matrix and Arpeggiator. Finally the video contains a cacophonic desaster by using the Programmer 's PARAPHONICmode. It allows playing intervals and triads on the Pulse by analyzing the midinotes and muting/transposing DCO 2&3 accordingly.
Still missing is a demo for the Pulse Programmer's capabilities of combining several Pulses to a polysynth - the CASCADE. I'll do a separate video for this asap."

2019/07 - Sad Anime Jazz
Published on Aug 4, 2019 Stereoping
"A little composition exercise which leaded into sth. like an Anime soundtrack. Imagine a melancholic person sitting by the sea or gazing into a wide landscape in late summer. Simple setup: Kawai K4 (Guitar) and Roland JV-1080 (Piano & Horns). Drums from Alesis HR-16 and a midified Hammond AutoVario 64. Besides rare superimpositions of gear, the Video just contains the progressing FL Studio playlist digging through the midi-clips containing the notes being fired to the synths and drummachines. (In case you wonder... 2-4 notes were changed after recording the screencast) Enjoy :-)"

2019/07 - Sahara Pulse
Published on Jul 28, 2019 Stereoping
"Starting out as a simple testsong for a midified TR-606 in a custom case, this midi-arrangement exercise went somehow oriental and even epic in the end. The solo is played by the PULScar with slight realtime modulations to bring some live into the sound. Finally found the time to make a neat sticker for the frontpanel. The ensemble also contains a modded Alesis HR-16 with custom EPROMS holding oriental percussion. The big knob is for downpitching the whole machine, demoed at 3:52. Other gear: Roland Juno 6 (Bass) & JV1080 (Strings, Brass), Kawai K4 (Brass) and the Waldorf Microwave (.. well, some synth sound). Footage shows the realtime sound editing, some fotos, studio flyovers and score screengrabs."

Melody played by the Waldorf Microwave, slight realtime-modulations with the Programmer. Drums are Pearl DRX and SC-40 (HiHats)"

CR68-M-TMG DIY-retrokit for Roland's CR-68
2019/05 - CR-68-M-TMG demosong Published on May 21, 2019 Stereoping
"The CR68-M-TMG is a DIY-retrokit for Roland's CR-68. 'M' stands for Midi as all voices can be triggerd via Midi - including Accent. The 'TMG' describes the cooler part - the PCB also holds the three missing instruments of the big sister CR-78 which the CR-68 normally lacks: Tambourine (TB), Metalbeat (MB) and Guiro (GU). All voices were carefully recreated based on original schematics. Tambourine is available as longer and shorter decay and Guiro in high and low pitch. Each of the 3 drumvoices uses a special inductor to build a very steep bandpassfilter definately needed to form the characteristic timbre. We've given a little batch of these inductors into production on rare, old winding machines to get the perfect sound.
This mellow demosong shows details of the PCB and electronic parts as well as some footage of the CR-68 itself. The drums are - of course - coming from a CR-68 equipped with this retrofit. The song introduces the 3 instuments one after the other. Typography and visual helpers like realtime analyzer and oscilloscope will guide you to easily identify the single TB/MB/GU sounds in the mix.
The CR68-M-TMG retrokit is available now in the stereoping shop. Production run is limited due to these special coils."

KAWAI TEISCO SX-240 w/ Tauntek OS & Stereoping Controller
Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.
via this auction
"RARE - KAWAI SX-240 8 VOICE POLYPHONIC SYNTHESIZER w/ built in Sequencer, DUAL/SPLIT/LAYRING abilities, TAUNTEK OS and NEW MEMORY BATTERY! Also included is a BRAND NEW Stereoping SX-240 Synth Controller "Knob Box"!
Approximately 950 of these synths were ever made and these are quite rare and desirable. Many people (including myself) prefer the SX-240 over the Juno's from way back when.
This is a very super clean, excellent condition keyboard, I have literally owned it since I bought it brand new in 1984 from Gamble Music Co. in Galesburg IL."

2019/05 - Bangkok to San Francisco
Published on May 7, 2019 Stereoping
PULSCar sighting. Note the background on it looks red / burgundy not black. Fun track.
"I hope you enjoy listening to this funny composition as i did while arrangeing it. Starting as a stupid solo-entertainer-pattern with Cha-Cha-Trumpets. The arrangement takes a twist into Bhangra at 1:05 with a juicy Synth-solo played by Dreadbox's Nyx, accompanied by a programmed VSTi-Tabla. The journey continues with deep Volksmusik-Horns leading into the contrastive & sweet contra theme at 2:04. The Boehm Dynamic 12x24 Ensemble strings have their solo now, the Nyx is helping out a bit. In the end from 3:03 the chord progression gets somehow jazzy for a final Nyx synthesizer solo.
A realtime recording of a FL Studio midi arrangement. Drums: CR-68 (with midi & the missing CR78 voices MetalBeat,Tambourine + Guiro), Bass: Waldorf Pulse, oriental Solosynth: Dreadbox Nyx, Horns & Backing-strings: JV1018, High strings: Böhm Dynamic 12/24
The video itself it not that exciting. The playlist and a headcam-realtime-shot from the gokiburi-studio showing some gear and slight modulation-performance on the Nyx during the soli. At least something to look at.
Hope you like it :-)"

Synth Programmer for Prophet VS
Published on Apr 13, 2019 Stereoping
"Demo for another Edition of the Synth Programmer - this time for Sequential Circuits Prophet VS. Some parts of the Prophet VS are a pain to be edited like e.g. the Wave envelope points/rates/levels as well as the modulation slot's switches. The Synth Programmer makes things much easier. The video shows patch selection with automatic data synchronisation, some editing of several parameters incl. the WAVE MIX envelope. Finally some footage demonstrating the much easier access to arpeggiator and the modulation slots using the Programmer."

Stereoping Hardware Synth Programmer for Roland MKS-80
Published on Mar 29, 2019 Stereoping
"Some clips of the Stereoping Synth Programmer for Roland MKS-80, a hardware alternative to the MPG-80. The video shows how to connect Programmer and MKS-80, twiddling knobs and how the MKS responds, how to access hidden parameters and a minute showing many results of the built in randomizer. Finally you see an example of automating the MKS-80 in a DAW with control change messages making use of the Programmer's built in CC to SysEx translator. You are welcome to visit my website and shop for photos of the Programmer in high quality."

Korg DS-8 realtime sound editing
Published on Mar 1, 2019 Stereoping
"Some demo snippets showing the DS-8, Korg's FM-Synthesizer with two Oscillators and built in effects like modulation Delay, Flanger, Chorus .... The DS-8 is claimed to be hard to program. After understanding the concept - which is much easier and funny using a hardware midicontroller - it appears to be quite simple. The demo shows some MIDI settings which need to be adjusted on each powerup as the DS-8 does not remember them. Then some playing with the effects, timbre, spectrum and modulation generator. You will see - and HEAR - a complete hangup of the DS-8 as it does not seem to like SysEx-Editing the AMP envelopes. Last part shows the sonic bandwidth of the DS-8's FM-Synthesis by setting OSC 2 to XMOD and playing with the parameters."
