TouchOSC Template for the M-Audio Venom

You can find the TouchOSC template here. Note this does require The Missing Link to work as it uses OSC to MIDI for sysex support.

You can find a TB MIDI Stuff port of the editor which does not require The Missing Link here.

video here

The template covers single mode for the M-Audio Venom. Click on each image for the full size shot. You can see every single editable parameter of the Venom in single mode. Note the Venom does have 16 modulation slots. I stopped at 10 as that is good enough for me for now.

The template is mapped for The Missing Link. You can however map it to OSCulator or other so it should at least save you some time if you are on those formats. Update: You can find a TB MIDI Stuff port of the editor which does not require The Missing Link here.

See this post for a video - note I switched to the Venom color scheme for the template. It looks much sharper than the rainbow colors I originally had.

M-Audio Venom Distortion

"More fun with the M-Audio Venom. Note this is not a proper demo. I am creating a TouchOSC template for all editable parameters in single mode of the Venom and I thought I'd throw this video up. The Venom is turning out to be a surprisingly deep synth. In this video I'm just tweaking the distortion parameters in the Insert FX page of my editor. Wireless control is via The Missing Link. Sliders from left to right: Depth, PreGain, PostGain and High Cutoff. The bottom end drops out in the video as I am still using the mic in on my Canon T2i. No time to sync audio and video just yet. Trust me, it sounds MUCH better live. The more I play with this synth the more I am impressed. I don't want to give too much away before my proper review, but it sounds really, really good. There are things you can do with this synth that you simply cannot do with others. This is a deep and powerful synth. Note this is Single mode with only one patch. The Venom supports Multi mode with up to four patches active."

M-Audio Venom Controlled by TouchOSC Part 2 Update

YouTube via matrixsynth | Feb 24, 2011 | Watch full screen 720HD

You'll find the template posted here.

Some additional info on this one:
"I start on the OSC1 page messing with the different waveforms for oscillator 1. All you are hearing is oscillator 1. At :46 - I flip through to the Oscillator Control page (I briefly hit the OSC3 page) where I have the following settings:

Red - OSC1 Course, Fine, 3>FM, Shape and Keytrack
Green - OSC2 Course, Fine, Keytrack and Sync to OSC1
Blue - OSC3 Course, Fine, Keytrack and Sync to OSC1
Yellow - Start Modulation and Drift
Purple - Mix for OSC1, OSC2, OSC3, Ring, Ext, and Ext Src
Grey - Portamento/Glide On/Off and Rate, Bender Range

I turn OSC1 down and turn OSC2 up. I then flip to the OSC2 page so you can hear it by itself. Note the waveforms although the same sound different in some cases. This is because the envelope setting for OSC2 has a longer sustain than OSC1 so you hear more of each waveform. This is especially noticeable with drum samples. I then go back to the OSC mix page and add OSC1 back in. I adjust waveforms for each in their respective waveform pages so you can hear them work together. I go back to the mix section and add in OSC3. At 2:08 I enable OSC3 sync. I then disable it but it sounds different than before (I'll have to look into that :) Update: this was due to an error in my template which has been fixed). I flip through some of the waveforms again to hear how they mix together. At 3:00 I try OSC3 to OSC1 FM. I set OSC1 to a sine wave so I can hear the effect better. At 3:02 I turn down the levels for OSC2 and OSC3 so I can only hear the effect with only OSC1.

If you watch closely you will see each of the three oscillators has the full 94 waveform sources to select from and you can have them interact with each other. OSC1 can be frequency modulated by OSC3, OSC2 and OSC3 can be synced to OSC1, each can keytrack which means if you disable it the pitch does not track, so if you turn it off for 3 and have it FM 1 it will have a different effect than if it was on. There's also ring mod. You can also set the frequency for an oscillator below audio rate into LFO range. Note there are non standard waveforms including drum waveform samples to chose from, so you can do some really interesting things here. The reason I am creating an iPad editor is because only certain parameters are accessible via the front panel of the synth. You cannot edit OSC waveforms via the synth directly. You have to use the included editor on your PC or go the iPad route."

M-Audio Venom Controlled by TouchOSC

Two parts. Part 1 is a lead in to Part 2. Do not miss Part 2 (watch past :46). Watch these full screen 720HD to read the labels and see what I'm doing. I just started creating the editor and exploring the Venom. Aggressive and powerful little synth. You can find the template here.

YouTube via matrixsynth | Feb 24, 2011 |

"Watch 720HD full screen to see the waveform names and what I'm doing in detail. Prototype TouchOSC template controlling M-Audio Venom using The Missing Link to translate OSC to MIDI. Only one oscillator on the Venom is heard in a latched arpeggio. This page in TouchOSC allows you to select the waveform via toggle buttons and via a slider at the bottom. All 94 waveforms are available. Be sure to see Part 2. The purpose of these videos is primarily to showcase the editor controlling the Venom. It sounds much better live. The audio in on my Canon Rebel T2i isn't cutting it. But yes, this can be one aggressive sounding synth."

THE MISSING LINK 2-way OSC/MIDI demo

YouTube via armatronix | February 16, 2011 |

Testing out OSC-MIDI and MIDI-OSC using the Missing Link connected directly to a Yamaha O1V mixer's MIDI IN and MIDI OUT (no laptop needed).

The iPhone is sending OSC to the Missing Link, which is converting it to MIDI CCs to control the mixer. The reverse happens when I move the mixer's faders.

Now the next time Golden Ears tells you how to run your mix, you can just hand him your phone and let him do it."

Wireless iPad Editor for the Waldorf Pulse+ - TouchOSC & The Missing Link

The Missing Link TouchOSC Template for Waldorf Pulse

YouTube via matrixsynth | February 06, 2011

Note how you can jump between parameter values. You can't do that with traditional sliders and knobs.

TouchOSC editor for the Waldorf Pulse+. This should work with the Pulse as well. The editor is mapped for The Missing Link (wifimidi.com) wireless TouchOSC to MIDI device. No PC/Mac is used. Communication is as follows:

iPad ---(wireless)---> The Missing Link ---(MIDI cable)---> Pulse+

Note there is no PC in between. The Missing Link handles all communication between the iPad and the Pulse+, and communication between the iPad and The Missing Link is completely over wifi - no cables. You are free to roam with the iPad. The video above shows some basic editing of parameters to show how it works. Every editable parameter of the Pulse+ is featured along with some custom controls including touch pads, keys and more. Not in the demo, but on each screen you can see a red and green square. These are middle C note on and note off buttons for drones and experimentation with the controls when you do not want to use an arpeggiator. I actually have The Missing Link going into a MIDI Merge so I can use an external keyboard as well. The Missing Link is a class compliant MIDI USB device and can be used with the iPad camera connection kit as a CoreMIDI device or with your PC/Mac. Note in the beginning of the video the Pulse is sitting in a rack. The iPad with The Missing Link frees you of the rack and enhances the editing interface of the Pulse, making it much more usable in the studio or live setting. Below are screens for each page of the template in order. You can find the template here and on wifimidi.com here. You can find more info on The Missing Link wireless TouchOSC to MIDI box here. Click the screens below for the full size shots. Also see my Rhodes Chroma editor. I'll be testing and posting that in the coming week/s.

Introducing The Missing Link Wireless OSC/MIDI Translator

"The Missing Link OSC/MIDI Translator is a standalone hardware device which contains its own WiFi radio, and translates specially-coded OSC messages sent from your mobile device or computer into standard MIDI messages to control synthesizers, drum machines, mixers, digital audio workstations, or anything which responds to MIDI commands. It does this with low latency, high flexibility and configurability, and without the need for a computer anywhere in the control chain. Multiple wireless OSC devices may connect simultaneously to The Missing Link, making collaboration easy.

The Missing Link presents a breakthrough in MIDI technology by leveraging the power and easy configurability of mobile OSC apps already available for a variety of platforms, to control MIDI devices without the complication of WiFi or software translators, while at the same time freeing your device from cabling. It is truly the first and only device of its kind.

Pre-order sales are now being taken for the first production run of 100 units. Units are already being built, and will be shipping soon. The price is $150, available directly from http://www.wifimidi.com.

Something for 2011 - TouchOSC Wireless Editors for Your Synths

If you recall from my XMas post, this year, a big focus on the synth front for me has been the iPad. What you are looking at here is a TouchOSC template for the Waldorf Pulse+. Every editable parameter on the Pulse is represented. Click each image for a full size shot. The kicker is I have it working wirelessly with The Missing Link. I am able to control my Waldorf Pulse+ with my iPad without wires. I was literally able to control it from a different room. This is BIG for two reasons. One, the obvious wireless control of synths, and two, creating an entirely new OPEN interface for editing synths. For those of you that used Sound Diver, this is like it on steroids.

No, the Waldorf Pulse is not that complex, BUT, you are limited to six knobs, small print, and it sits in a rack which may or may not be close to you. Now, imagine having an iPad sitting on your MIDI controller and having a custom editing interface in front of you. OR, imagine picking up that interface and kicking back on a chair in the studio while you tweak away. If you look at the last image of this post you will see a keyboard control and the ARP controls. You don't even need a MIDI controller to get going. You can use the iPad all on its own. You can create any number of custom controls - unlimited x/y pads, unlimited sliders, knobs, keys, etc. With a MIDI merge box you can run a sequencer into your synth and edit away with the iPad.

Back in November you might recall my Rhodes Chroma TouchOSC template. I now have that running wirelessly with The Missing Link as well.

Next up will be a template for the Yamaha FS1R. The Yamaha FS1R is Yamaha's most powerful FM and Formant synthesizer to date. It is a four part, 8-Op, FM and Formant synthesizer. The DX7 was only 6-Op with no Formant synthesis. There was only a rack mount version of the FS1R and editing it was like trying to paint on a wall sized canvas through a keyhole. It is a powerful and beautiful sounding synthesizer, but most have barely scratched the surface because of it's editing interface. The iPad coupled with The Missing Link will finally unlock this synth. Note, the Missing Link does support sysex and I have verified it does work with the FS1R. I was able to watch the parameter values on the FS1R change as I manipulated a slider on the iPad, all wirelessly. That said, see you on the other side! My New Years post will follow tomorrow. All done for the year! :)

Update: you can find the template here. It's mapped for The Missing Link, but you can remove the mappings by checking the auto box in TouchOSC for each parameter, followed by making a mapping with OSCulator.

Update: screens captured direct from the iPad added below.

Update: I updated the template to use toggles instead of sliders for selection parameter, so screens here are slightly different.

S1MIDITrigger for iPad Adds Sysex Support, Import/Export & More

What's New in Version V3.3.0:
- Import / Export Banks with iTunes
- SysEx supports (except DS MIDI Wifi Server)
- Add Note No. in Pad Setting view
- Add Label control
- Add selected frame on Design view
- Hard spot range to Knob and Slider

S1MidiTrigger - Miura Acoustic

Update: It looks like only the Pad trigger control (colored squares in pic) supports sysex at this time. Sliders and X/Y Pad currently do not. When I first posted this I noted that I would finally crack my Yamaha FS1R. That will have to wait. CC support on it is limited and sysex is the only way to get to all of it's parameters aside from its keyhole editing interface. Currently no app for the iPad that I'm aware of supports sliders that can transmit SysEx. Update: Sysex support for sliders and knobs are in with V3.4.0.

TouchOSC iPad Template for the Rhodes Chroma

Rhodes Chroma TouchOSC Editor

YouTube via matrixsynth | November 21, 2010 |

"The Chroma has a slightly, conceptually different architecture than most analog poly synths. On most you have two oscillators that are routed through a filter with shared modulation sources such as envelopes and LFOs. On the Chroma, each of two oscillators, Wave A and Wave B have corresponding filters, Filter A and Filter B, LFOs called Sweep A and B, and so on. The routing is not fixed and is very flexible, meaning you can use modulation sources on B with A and vice versa. There is too much to go into here, so check out the excellent Rhodes Chroma site for more: http://rhodeschroma.com/.

As for this video, the Chroma starts with an initialized patch which only has one "Wave/Patch" active. In the beginning I adjust the pitch for Wave A which is active. I then show Wave B is inactive by attempting to adjust its pitch which does nothing. I then enable Wave B followed by applying various modulations to filter and pitch for both. This video is not a performance and is only meant to show a little of what the Rhodes Chroma TouchOSC editor is capable of." See the screens above for reference. Below is a shot of the iPad on top of the Chroma.

Update: see this post for an editor that does not require The Missing Link.

For The Missing Link you can find templates here. One is for TouchOSC and one is for OSCulator.

For those new to TouchOSC and OSCulator, TouchOSC provides a JazzMutant Lemur-like control interface that is completely configurable. You can read more about it on hexler.net here. TouchOSC only transmits Open Sound Control messages. To translate these messages to MIDI CC you need something like OSCulator.

The two templates in the share above are for TouchOSC and OSCulator. For TouchOSC you just need to drop the mapping in the templates folder and sync to your iPad. You can then select the mapping. For OSCulator, you just need to open the template, click on the Settings icon and set it to use whatever MIDI out you plan to hook into your Chroma. Note you do need the CC+ upgrade on your Chroma with MIDI set for Expanded Mode MCM.

The screens show all editable parameters of the Rhodes Chroma. If you have a Chroma, you owe it to yourself to check out the Rhodes Chroma website and join the email list.

Missing Link Wireless MIDI Device - Wireless MIDI for the iPad and iPhone

YouTube via minhternet | September 05, 2010

No wires. No PC. This is huge when you think about it. This will allow you to control your synths wirelessly and directly via your mobile device.

"This is the Missing Link.

It is a wireless device that receives OSC and outputs MIDI.

When I open my settings in my phone it shows up as a network that I can connect to.

When I go to my OSC app, and press a button, an OSC message will be sent wirelessly from my phone.

This message will get received by the Missing Link, which converts it to MIDI and sends it to the instrument.

I can now use my phone to play a keyboard or control my mixer or MIDI LED lights."

via ARMATRONIX:
"This is just a prototype, we have custom circuitry in the works. Right now, we have OSC > MIDI working, and we'll be adding the reverse MIDI > OSC functionality soon, as well as a USB MIDI connection in case you do want to use it with a computer."
