CGS Serge Modular Synthesizer - Infinite Melody Patch (w/ notes) #TTNM

Published on Mar 14, 2018 The Tuesday Night Machines

"Spent some time with the Infinite Melody module in my CGS Serge MARSH panel and came up with this self-playing patch, with audio effects from the iPad. MORE INFO BELOW!!!

Audio gear used:

- Best of CGS Serge BOG, SWAMP, MARSH
- iPad with Kymatica AUM, AUFX: Space Reverb & Kosmonaut Delay
- Zoom U-24 iPad USB Audio & MIDI Interface
- Doepfer MSY2 MIDI to analog Clock Converter
- Zoom R16 Recorder

Patch Notes:

Four stages of the Sequencer Programmer are addressed randomly by the Gated Comparator, which is driven by White Noise. NCO 1 & 2 and a DUSG in VCO mode are sequenced by the Programmer. Either by the first CV output (the DUSG) or by gates (the two NCOs), which are mixed and attenuated to shift the VCOs a set amount of semi-tones up or down.

NCO 2 also receives pitch CV from the Infinite Melody, going through the Modulo Magic to keep the CV from going too high. The Infinite Melody receives White Noise as well and the Advance input is fed a very fast clock from a second DUSG, which has its speed modulated negatively by the Gated Comparator. This makes the pitch changes from the Infinite Melody not always come in sync with the main clock, creating some interestingly glitchy patterns sometimes.

The three sound sources are mixed and sent through the VCF, modulated by two LFOs and a decay envelope.

The main clock source is the iPad running Kymatica AUM, connected to a Doepfer MSY2 MIDI-to-Analog-Clock converter. The Serge's audio also goes through AUM using the Zoom U-24 Audio & MIDI Interface. Audio effects used are the Kosmonaut delay and AUFX: Space reverb.

Tuning the Serge with all those different mixed pitch CV sources took a bit of fiddling, but luckily the Zoom R16 recorder has a tuner built in, which made it a lot quicker than doing it by ear."

STG Soundlabs modular plus DIY rarities

"The case is made of curly oak top/front and ash sides/back (they match up really well) and has a couple STG Busboards with a Power One PSU that's really overbuilt for the case size. The modules are all in decent shape save for occasional rack rash that you don't see when screws are in place or some light scratches here or there from a patch lead, which is to be expected with an instrument that's frequently patched and used and nothing out of the ordinary. This system new with a case would cost well over $7,000 so this is a serious deal. Comes with a nice pile of hosa colored patch cables in 1.5 and 3ft lengths.

All modules are professionally built, even the DIY/synthcube modules so you know you'll be getting something to depend on for years to come...

Here's the module list:

Serge Modular Synth Chaotic Ping Feedback #TTNM

Published on Feb 12, 2018 The Tuesday Night Machines

"This is a chaotic filter ping patch, based around the Infinite Melody module, which modulates everything and receives the whole system's audio output to create an unstable feedback loop. MORE INFO BELOW :)

---------

PixelNoises Synth T-Shirts by The Tuesday Night Machines:

---------

Audio gear used:
Best of CGS Serge BOG + MARSH
... and some Final Cut Pro X Reverb

Patch Notes:
Phew ... well ... okay, let's try to write that down. The DUSGs and one NCO ping the filter, one Utility LFO plays a constant drone through a modulated Wave Folder. Everything is mixed and sent to the VCF. The LPF output is recorded and the BPF output is acting as noise source for the Infinite Melody, which modulates pretty much everything, including the NCOs pitch. The NCOs act as Clock and Advance trigger sources for the IM. Because the Infinity Melody shit registers need to be constantly filled sequentially using the Advance triggers, weird rhythms can happen when you play with the Clock and Advance speeds (here my NCO square outputs). The Feedback from the BPF output into the Infinite Melody's Noise input then creates chaotic patterns that can be somewhat stable but then break out at the tiniest nudge of a knob."

Musical Serge Drone (CGS BOG Modular Synth) #TTNM

---------

Audio gear used:
Best of CGS BOG Serge Boat
... and some Zoom R16 Reverb

Patch Notes:
The two NCOs and a DUSG act as audio oscillators, which cross-modulate each other in various ways. The two slow and unsynced Utility LFOs are modulation sources and their square waves make the NCOs change pitch, which creates beating patterns sometimes, depending on the overall modulation. Then I play with the filter which receives the mix of all three audio sources."

Patch Notes:
I'm modulating both Extended ADSRs heavily using the Gated Comparator and DUSG. The Sequencer Programmer plays the two NCOs, which cross-modulate each other. There's some sub-octave generation going on too with the VC Divider and of course filtering with lots of modulation too."

CGS SERGE PUNK JAM!!! GRRRRRR!!!!! #TTNM

Published on Feb 3, 2018 The Tuesday Night Machines

"Distortion, simple chords and sloppy timing :D Pushing buttons and wiggling knobs on my CGS Serge Modular Synth until everything falls apart. Listen on good speakers (or don't)! MORE INFO BELOW! ARRRRR!!!!

---------

Audio gear used:
Best of CGS Serge BOG, SWAMP & MARSH panels plus some reverb from the Zoom R16 recorder

Patch Notes:
I'm playing the Sequencer Programmer like a keyboard. Pushing a button there also makes the filter pings louder using a VCA and ADSR. I'm using one DUSG to slew the pitch changes of NCO 1 and the other to filter NCO 1's wave, which then goes into the Wave Multiplier. Its pulse output is sent through the VC Divider to create a suboctave waveform. NCO 2 is also pitched by the Sequencer Programmer and there is some heavy cross modulation going on between the two Oscillators. The Gated Comparator modulates everything and also generated the pings for the filter (together with the clock divider, which keeps a certain rhythm to the pings)."

Growly CGS Serge Modular Synth Jam (w/ patch notes) #TTNM

Published on Feb 1, 2018 The Tuesday Night Machines

---------

PixelNoises Synth T-Shirts by The Tuesday Night Machines:

---------

Audio gear used:
Best of CGS Serge BOG, SWAMP, MARSH

Patch Notes:
One DUSG plays the main drone, while the two NCOs are sent through VCAs, modulated by the two ADSR. The Sequencer Programmer provides a track of pitch CV for each of the oscillators. The DUSG is going through the top part of the Wave Multiplier. All audio is mixed and sent through the VCF, which is heavily modulated by a mix of the two NCO waveforms and the Gated Comparator. The Gated Comparator is the main modulation source in this patch, VC'ing pulse widths, wave shapes, wave shaping, and pretty much everything else that can be modulated. At the end im turning up the lower part of the Wave Multiplier, which receives the audio mix before the filter and totally crushes everything :D"

CGS Serge BOG + MARSH + SWAMP (w/ patch notes) #TTNM

Published on Jan 31, 2018 The Tuesday Night Machines

"Another jam with the Serge panels. This time I'm using all three, although the SWAMP only provides white noise.

---------

PixelNoises Synth T-Shirts by The Tuesday Night Machines:

---------

Audio gear used:
Best of CGS Serge panels BOG, MARSH & SWAMP

Patch Notes:
There are five "sounds" in the mix. NCO 1, NCO 1 processed by the VC Divider, NCO 2 through the bottom of the Wave Multiplier, DUSG 1 through the top of the Wave Multiplier and White Noise. All sounds are mixed together using the BOG's mixer and one of MARSH's CV Processors. Modulation is done by the two Utility LFOs, which are joined by the panel switch. One square wave output triggers the remaining DUSG, which's EOS output triggers an ADSR on the MASRH. There the two Slope Detectors analyse the slopes of LFO one and the DUSG, creating more triggers, used for modulation (e.g. the pitch of the oscillators is modulated by triggers, making them change between two notes.). LFO 1 also modulates the VC Divider to create changing sub-octaves of NCO 1. The audio mix goes through the VCF then, which is modulated by the Wave Multiplier output (for FM) and the CV Cluster, receiving input and offset from an LFO and Slope Detector. I'm playing with the audio mix and filter cutoff, CV and resonance mostly."

Best of CGS Serge BOG + SWAMP Jam #TTNM

Published on Jan 28, 2018

"After spending a few days figuring out how to get things running, I finally jammed on two-thirds of my new Serge Modular system for the first time, using the CGS BOG and SWAMP panels. The MARSH will join the two soon. PATCH NOTES BELOW!

---------

PixelNoises Synth T-Shirts by The Tuesday Night Machines:

---------

Audio gear used:
Best of CGS BOG & SWAMP Boats

Patch Notes:
The two NCOs are driven by the Sequencer Programmer which plays four two-note chords. All audio goes through the low pass filter, being modulated by one DUSG decay envelope. The other DUSG modulates a VCA through which White Noise is fed to create a percussion sound. One Utility LFO is the master clock. The other LFO is running at audio rate at constant pitch, going through the modulated Wave Multiplier into the Mixer with the Noise and the two VCOs. The mix is then sent through the VCF. The Gated Comparator acts as the main modulator in this patch, changing both DUSG's decay envelope times, PWM of the VCOs and wave folding of the Utility LFO (which creates the "melody" on top of the chords)."

State Variable Spring Reverb Demo

Published on Jun 22, 2017 djthomaswhite

"This is a demo of my SVR-101 State Variable Spring Reverb. It is a combination of the Paia Hot Springs Reverb, Crag Anderton (EPFM) Super Tone Control analog filter and a simple DC Mixer from Catgirl Synth (CGS). It is a mono effects device that can be used as:

- Spring Reverb alone
- State Variable Filter alone
- Or combinations of both with the filter being switchable to the main output or the reverb output only, allowing you to EQ and shape the tone of the reverb that is mixed with the dry signal at the output.

I've had these projects since the late 90's but never really used them. I decided to take my knowledge of building DIY projects from the last 20 years to remix the boards into something I would use today. I hope you enjoy the concept and maybe some of the sounds. I am really pleased with the outcome of this enDIYvor."

ASR Freez

Published on Jun 16, 2017 Robin Rimbaud-Scanner

"A little experiment using the Elby Designs CGS734 Analog Shift Register running three oscillators, the Verbos Electronics Complex Oscillator, Endorphin es Furthrrr Generator Oscillator and Harvestman Hertz Donut Oscillator, the latter of which runs through the 2hp Freez, triggered by a Modcon Quad LFO. Intellijel Metropolis is making the melodies. Meanwhile two separate melodies lines flutter and appear from Hex Inverter Orbitals, also clocked by Metropolis - using Make Noise STO and Intellijel Dixie 2. Add a little reverb and a terrible iPhone film and you have it :-D"
