"The signals of a plant are difficult to interpret — especially when their sound is not naturally tuned to the human ear.

What you hear at first may feel raw, almost chaotic.
Not music as we usually understand it, but movement… pulses… living electricity searching for a voice.

In this experiment, I connected a pine tree to a modular synthesizer and did something unusual: instead of forcing harmony, I limited the system to just a few notes and allowed the tree to influence the tempo itself.

The result was surprising.
The BPM was not fixed.
It expanded and contracted organically — breathing rather than following a grid.
This reflects a simple but profound idea once described by Einstein:
time is not absolute.

Here, time is not dictated by a machine, but shaped by a living organism responding to the present moment.

The graph linked below shows the smoothed bioelectrical readings of the pine tree over time, revealing natural fluctuations and distinct states.
Because life is never perfectly stable.
It flows.

With the addition of subtle textures and gentle binaural beats, the sound opens a space for deep meditation, where the mind slows down enough to listen — not with the ears, but with attention.

"In an experiment in remote performance, production, and presentation, I gathered some sounds from the internet, the studio, and the environment and put together this short film that documents the location, the mood, the instruments, and the process of creating a piece of electronic music "off-grid" in a remote location. Rather than simply film myself composing for literal live performance, I surround the piece with context and indulged in fascinations. An abstract narrative emerged as I pieced things together..

Sounds like a dual filter with resonance, one slowly sweeping and the other modulated by sample & hold. See the nature label at the bottom of this post for more.

"This 50-second animation provides an auditory as well as visual glimpse at data collected by Juno’s Waves instrument as the spacecraft flew past the Jovian moon Ganymede on June 7, 2021. The abrupt change to higher frequencies around the midpoint of the recording represents the spacecraft's move from one region of Ganymede's magnetosphere to another.

The audio track is made by shifting the frequency of those emissions — which range from 10 to 50 kHz — into the lower audio range

The animation is shorter than the duration of Juno's flyby because the Waves data is edited onboard to reduce telemetry requirements.

I'm using a Zoom H1 to record sounds in the field.
The sampler I use is the Yamaha TX16W from 1987. It is a 12 bit stereo sampler, at 33Khz.
I use the TAL sampler to process the sampled sound, and to loop it etc.
The song is called 'The Spacehopper Theme' and was made for this video. I use various synths in this and the song is mixed and mastered."

"Through the magic or rather science of bio data sonification, this flush of oyster mushrooms get a shot at playing a eurorack modular synthesizer before they become my dinner. Electrical resistance is measure by passing a small current through the mushrooms similar to a lie detector test. The changes in resistance are then converted into control signals which determine the rhythm, pitch, timbre and effects parameters of the modular synthesizer.

Back in 2016, Daniel Wilson brought us Radionics Radio - An Album of Musical Radionic Thought Frequencies - Delawarr Multi-Oscillator (c.1962)

He now brings us Agitations: Post-Electronic Sounds. For this release, he is part of a quartet exploring "acoustic analogies for classical electronic soundmaking techniques." It was recorded entirely acoustically. The "CD edition contains the small booklet - 'A Primer on Post-Electronic Technique'. It's just received a large feature in Electronic Sound magazine and a glowing review in The Wire, linking the post-apocalyptic technology we use with the limitations forced upon us by the pandemic."

Synth Sounds of the Narwhal

"With the help of Inuit hunters, geophysicists recently recorded the various calls, buzzes, clicks and whistles of narwhals as they summered in a Greenland fjord. The recordings help scientists better understand the soundscape of Arctic glacial fjords and provide valuable insight into the behavior of these shy and mysterious creatures, according to the researchers.

This animation illustrates how narwhal vocalizations match their behavior. The researchers captured several types of sounds made by narwhals, including social calls, or whistles, and clicks used for echolocation, the biological sonar used by dolphins, bats, some whales and other animals to navigate and find food.

The closer narwhals get to their food, the faster they click, until the noise becomes a buzz not unlike that of a chainsaw. This terminal buzz helps the narwhals pinpoint the location of their prey.

The recordings help the researchers provide a baseline of the kinds of sounds that permeate the narwhals’ pristine habitat. In combination with sightings, they also show narwhals get closer to glacier ice than previously thought for this area and the animals do forage for food in summer, contrary to some previous findings."
