Live Jam #44 - Drone / Techno - Eurorack modular synthesizer and Korg Volca Sample

Published on Jul 27, 2016 Monotrail

Check out the storm trooper on the cat. Star Wars.

"I am working towards a 30min liveset. So more frequently I will be experimenting with a little longer sessions. Here is a more beat driven patch I play out for about 16min.

Soundcloud: https://soundcloud.com/monotrailmusic

Patch description:

Kick, hats, and some percussion are from the Korg Volca Sample. Audio from the Volca to the a119 external in, and then to the synthrotek echo, modulated with sample and hold. Fast hihats are noise through a vca. Some random noise hits at the beginning are triggered by the dual quantizer, striking the Lxd. Main voice is The saw wave from the Dixie II through the uFold and Make noise MMG. uFold is modulated with a slow sine from Peaks, and the MMG with rhythmic sample and hold. The dixie is fm'ed with a fast sine from the Peaks. Melody comes from a doepfer a143-4 tri through a attenuator and the a-156 quantizer. Second voice is a square from a143-4 through the wasp filter, modulated with S&H. Audio is split to the Mutable Instruments Clouds for some reverb and feedback,

Stuff used:
Korg Volca Sample and Eurorack modular system with:

Doepfer: a-118, a-119, a-124, a-143-4, a-148, a-156, a-160-2, a-199
Intellijel: Dixie II, uFold, Quadra, 2xTriat , Linux, mult
Make noise: MMG, Lxd
Mutable instruments: Clouds, Peaks
MFB: Dual LFO
Synthrotek: Echo, Deluxe power

Diy:
Quad attenuator

Audio via the Behringer mixer to a Moto Ultralite MK3 hybrid.
No external effects used."

Live Jam #43 - Ambient / Drone / Glitch / Minimal / Noise - Eurorack modular synthesizer

Published on Jul 21, 2016 Monotrail

"A rather minimal glitchy ambient patch. Almost self playing, I just tweak the volume of some parts.

Soundcloud: https://soundcloud.com/monotrailmusic

Patch description:

Kick: a143-4 triangle - a118 - Linix vca - Linix and a143 pitch are modulated with AD envelope from the Quadra. Clouds has a recording of some glitchy percussion scrubbed through with a random lfo from Peaks. a118 random out is advancing the a165 clock divider triggering the kick and hihat which is noise through a vca, opened with a one-shot tri lfo, cv modulated, from the MFB dual lfo. Long horn like ones are a square from the doepfer a143-4 through a Make noise MMG. Short notes are a triangle from the a143 through the Intellijel uFold
and MN LxD. More noise is made the Dixie with lots of exponential and linear fm, through the Make Noise LxD, and the Synthrotek Echo.

Stuff used:
Eurorack modular system with:

Doepfer: a-118, a-119, a-124, a-143-4, a-148, a-156, a-160-2, a-199

Live Jam #41 - Electro / Techno / Deep house - Korg Volca sample, microbrute, korg er-1, eurorack

Published on Jul 6, 2016 Monotrail

"Another go with almost everything running. The Arturia Microbrute is the baseline, with some added noise from the modular. The Beatstep pro is sequencing the tap-lfo on peaks, which is send to the microbrutes cutoff. Use audio pluggiator (finally on screen (ish)) is the repetitive acid line. Korg Volca sample is playing kicks and some wood block things. Korg er-1 is the hats and short snare. The high melody is created on the modular by a Dixie II through the Doepfer wasp filter with a light random voltage to the cutoff. Fast hats is created with noise through a vca, opened with a ad envelope from the Intellijel Quadra. Korg Microkorg lays some chords.

Stuff used:
Arturia Beatstep Pro, Akai APC key 25, Arturia Microbrute, Korg Microkorg, Korg electribe er-1, Use Audio Plugiator, and Eurorack modular system with:

Doepfer: a-118, a-119, a-124, a-143-4, a-148, a-156, a-160-2, a-199

KORG Monotribe + MicroBrute Depeche Mode - Black Celebration live performance

Published on Mar 17, 2016 101SONIC

"In this video, I perform Black Celebration by Depeche Mode with a Korg Monotribe and Arturia MicroBrute. I didn't use any MIDI sync or computer sequencer (DAW) everything played real-time, computer free :-)

I know, there are many melody unplayed but the concept is playing the main part in realtime without using any multi layer recording techniques.

Synth Rorschach #42: JJ Abrams Synth Reference in Star Wars The Force Awakens

So did anyone else catch the synth reference in The Force Awakens? Hint: It has to do with that planet in the right of the image on the left. If so, leave a comment, and please do not reveal any other spoilers for those who haven't seen it yet, although anyone that hasn't might be due for some punishment. I've seen it twice already in 3D and 2D - a note on which was a better experience for me is below. That said, if you haven't seen the film yet do not look in the comments, but see my note directly below.

And for those that do not know, JJ Abrams is into synths.

A small tip for those that haven't seen the film yet: I saw it the first time in IMAX 3D and again today in IMAX 2D at the same theater. I'm not sure if it was the theater, but both the audio and video quality of the 3D version blew the 2D version away. The screen was sharper, brighter and the audio was significantly better in the IMAX 3D version. I almost think something was just wrong with the 2D theatre, the quality was that much worse. It was like going from stereo to mono.

Update: someone got the answer in the comments below, so don't look if you still want to guess.

Update2: related via skkatter in the comments: Cool Guys Don't Look At Explosions - JJ Abrams on Keys

"Just a little morning recording session. These are kind of like my musical journals, if you will. Got the System 1m and haven't had time to explore it. Just played it live from the Ensoniq EPS 16+with a little Microbute sequence going. Music doesn't have to be complex to be enjoyable."

NOISE: THE iPHONE LIKE YOU'VE NEVER HEARD IT BEFORE.

NOISE is a powerful instrument that unlocks the extraordinary expressive potential of your mobile phone. Its unique playing surface takes full advantage of the iPhone 6S’s 3D Touch capability.
Enjoy powerful, multidimensional sounds on-screen or use it as the ultimate portable sound engine for your favorite MIDI controller.

MAKE SOME NOISE
Play a subtle flute melody, a rich textured pad or a killer synth lead. For players of any ability or style, NOISE makes a big impact.

Its unique playing surface is laid out like a piano keyboard from the future. Where you used to have keys, you now have a continuous set of “keywaves.” You can strike, press into, glide left and right, slide up and down, and lift off the keywaves to create unique sonic effects. NOISE is the most expressive mobile sound engine ever created.

FIND YOUR SOUND
NOISE comes with the Fundamentals NOISE Pack bundled, which offers 25 diverse, powerful sounds to get you started.

Breath Flute, for example, allows you to faithfully recreate breath control through pressure, while the sound of Polyrhythmic Loops morphs as you play up and down the keywaves. Try Smoky Rhodes for a cool, modern reinterpretation of the Fender Rhodes.

Expand your collection with unique NOISE Packs - Hybrid Acoustic comes with over 500MB of unique samples, Expressive Electronic includes both vintage synths and contemporary pads, and Synthetic Leads is for when you really just need to shred!

POWER YOUR KIT
NOISE’s deeply expressive Equator sound engine is a great fit for a wide range of MIDI controllers. It has in-built MIDI over Bluetooth, which makes it the perfect choice for wireless music-making on the go.
It is also one of the first apps with built-in, customizable MPE (Multidimensional Polyphonic Expression) Mode, so it also works plug-and-play with any MPE-compatible controller.

To really get the most out of NOISE and to take your musical expression to the next level, try it with our own Seaboard RISE, the award-winning MIDI controller hailed as “the future of the keyboard” (MusicRadar).

THE WORLD OF ROLI
NOISE is the result of years of innovative research and product development that enabled us to create the Seaboard RISE, a uniquely expressive, award-winning MIDI controller that enables 5 dimensions of touch; and Equator, its powerful native sound engine. With NOISE, we have shaped the surface of the Seaboard to maximize playability on an iPhone and remapped the new dimensions of sonic control offered by Equator. NOISE is built with JUCE, the leading cross-platform framework for audio apps.

At ROLI, we build game-changing tools for modern music creation. The award-winning Seaboard RISE and Seaboard GRAND instruments are part of our family of intuitively designed products - learn more at www.roli.com.

KEY FEATURES
- Tweak your sounds with onscreen macro controls and XY Touchpad
- Vary the size of the onscreen keywave surface to suit your screen and preferences
- Octave shift buttons and an onscreen sustain pedal add depth to real-time performance
- Control five dimensions of touch - Strike, Press, Glide, Slide and Lift
- Purchase additional NOISE Packs in-app and build your collection of sounds
- Recreate the Seaboard RISE experience on the iPhone 6S and make the most of its new 3D Touch feature
- Audio Units are coming soon. You'll be able to use NOISE as a synth in your favourite iOS DAW - stay tuned...

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
- NOISE for iPhone is designed for iPhone 5C and above.
- Please note that while NOISE works well as a sound engine on all iPhones, you will only be able to take full advantage of its keywave surface with an iPhone 6S or iPhone 6S Plus."
