AI Synthesis Giving Away One AI010 Switching Attenuator a Day Through July 11

See this post for demos and details on the new AI010 Attenuator. AI Synthesis kits and modules are available at thonk.co.uk and synthcube.com.

From Monday the 8th, through Thursday the 11th of July, AI Synthesis is giving away one kit or built unit on their product page.

The following is the official press release on the availability of the new AI010 Switching Attenuator:

"Portland, OR, USA July 8, 2019 – AI Synthesis has released the AI010 Switching Attenuator in both a built and guaranteed version, as well as in kit and PCB/Panel format. The AI010 Attenuator was a limited run I made for myself, but people wanted them, so here they are. The AI010 has two different attenuator circuits, but they are normalled together, so it can also function as a 1 in, 3 out Multiple. The module allows users to attenuate and control voltage for modules that lack attenuation on a CV input, in only 2HP. Following the tradition of the other eurorack modules, the AI001 Multiple,AI002 Mixer, and AI003 Looping ADSR, the module has a full video how-to build guide. Unlike some DIY companies that focus solely on providing kits, AI Synthesis has an educational mission and our kits and documentation are aimed at those who have never held a soldering iron. PCBS are professionally manufactured, and all panels are aluminum and designed by Grayscale.

From Monday the 8th, through Thursday the 11th of July, I am giving away one kit or built unit on the product page at https://aisynthesis.com/product/eurorack-attenuator/

“In the year 2000, I was in college and obsessed with modular synths, but could barely afford to eat. I knew it was possible to build your own synth, but there wasn’t anyone, or anywhere to turn to for advice. In the past decade, much more information has been published online, and in 2013 I started down my path to DIY modular. Even with all of the information online, there still lacked a single, simple, comprehensive guide for those looking to build their own synthesizer. I want AI Synthesis to be that guide. Prior to building my own synth, I was a dreamer, after building my modular, I felt I had awoken. I want to help others do the same.”
-Abraham Ingle
Founder, AI Synthesis

In addition to providing step by step build instructions, schematics, and circuit explanations, the site also includes a guide for getting started in modular synthesis, and a series of DIY Guides, with information regarding how Resistors actually work, and how to integrate a $26 scope into your Eurorack system."

Update: pics and press release:

Portland, OR, USA 4/12/2022 – AI Synthesis has released the AI022 Harmonic Mixer in both a built and guaranteed version, as well as in kit and PCB/Panel format.

The AI022 Harmonic CP3 Style Mixer is a discreet mixer using no ICs. As gain increases harmonics and analog warmth are added. As gain increases more, distortion and phasing is added, creating new waveforms from old ones.

The AI022 takes inspiration from the legendary Moog Modular CP3 style mixer, but updates it for eurorack and allows for user customization of the circuit. Many Moog Modular users attribute the CP3 mixer module to providing much of the warmth of the Moog Modular sound.

An exposed Bias knob allows abuse of the circuit, and allows for faithful replication of incoming audio, or radical analog wave shaping and distortion. It is also possible to use the Bias knob to adjust a +/- 5V signal into a 0/+ or 0/- signal.

It comes in both Silver Aluminum versions and Black PCB FR4 versions.

"Portland, OR, USA April 10, 2020 –

AI Synthesis has released the AI007 Quad VCA/Mixer in both a built and guaranteed version, as well as in kit and PCB/Panel format. The AI007 Quad VCA Mixer is a compact, high quality, and flexible way to control voltage (audio or cv) in your modular system). Each of the four inputs are DC coupled, allowing the amplitude of CV signals as well as audio rate signals to be voltage controlled. The outputs are also normalled together into a mixer, allowing the AI007 Eurorack Quad VCA Mixer to be used as a voltage controlled mixer. Once a cable is patched into a VCA output that output is removed from the mixer signal, allowing each channel to be used independently, giving users four VCAs in total. A dedicated knob shapes the curve response from Linear to Exponential.

Following the tradition of the other eurorack modules, the AI001 Multiple,AI002 Mixer, and AI003 Looping ADSR, the module has a full video how-to build guide. "The AI012 Eurorack Wave Animator produces two pulses per input wave cycle with voltage controlled pulse width, distance, and amplitude of the second pulse.

The manual is here.

The DIY Eurorack Wave Animator build guide is here."

Update: press release follows:

Portland, OR, USA August 17, 2023 – AI Synthesis has released the AI012 Eurorack Wave Animator in both a built and guaranteed version, as well as in kit and PCB/Panel format.
The AI012 Wave Animator is a Waveshaper/VCO Expander that produces two pulses per input wave cycle with voltage controlled pulse width, distance, and amplitude of the second pulse. This design was adapted (with permission and a few changes) from Ian Fritz’s Double Pulse Generator circuit. Some changes were made to the circuit in development.
While the circuit is all analog, the AI012 Eurorack Wave Animator’s pulse wave outputs have a range of timbres from analog wave folding to digital sounding chimes.
The Width of each Pulse is controlled by the AI012 Eurorack Wave Animator’s Width knob and corresponding attenuatable cv input.
The Distance between the second pulse and the first pulse is controlled by the AI012 Eurorack Wave Animator’s Distance knob and corresponding attenuatable cv input. The resulting waveform can have two distinct pulses, or staircase style wave-shapes.
The Amplitude of the second pulse is controlled by the AI012 Eurorack Wave Animator’s Amplitude knob and corresponding attenuatable cv input. It can be negative or positive in voltage value.
In addition to creating new audio rate waveforms, when used as a sequencer, the module can create interesting rythmic variations when the pulses are used as triggers and cv is used to stagger the second trigger.
It comes in both Silver Aluminum versions and Black PCB FR4 versions.
Depth: 35mm
HP: 8

Press release including the AI011 VCO followed by pics and additional details on the AI016 (AI011 posted here).

"Portland, OR, USA December 3, 2019 – AI Synthesis has released the AI011 Analog VCO and AI016 Tape Interface in both a built and guaranteed version, as well as in kit and PCB/Panel format. The AI011 Analog VCO is a robust and stable analog Eurorack VCO. Using the legendary curtis 3340 IC, the Oscillator provides buffered Triangle, Square, and Ramp waveforms, as well as a triangle to sine wave shaper to provide a sine wave output. The AI016 is a tape interface that allows user to use a humble three-head cassette recorder as a real analog tape echo.
PCBS are professionally manufactured, and all panels are aluminum and designed by Grayscale."

"The AI016 Eurorack Tape Echo Interface is a Limited Edition Module that uses a pre-amp and buffered feedback loops to allow a standard three head tape recorder as an analog tape echo. It also provides op-amp saturation on the input when pushed.

The tape recorder must have three heads (erase, record, and play) for it to work as a tape echo. This type of tape recorder will have a button or switch that allows the monitoring of the source audio, or what has just been recorded to the tape. The space between the record and play head creates the delay, and the Tape Interface feeds back into the unit to create repeats.

The AI016 provides the following tape controls:
Mix
Repeats
Input and Output Controls
Delay time is controlled by the tape deck. Not all tape decks allow speed control while recording, and modifications may be needed.
Kits include all parts needed to build and mount the AI011 Eurorack VCO:
Hi Quality Aluminum Panel
Mounting Screws
Potentiometers
Jacks and Nuts
Power cable

Please note that a three-head tape recorder is needed for tape echo. While I do support the AI016, I do not support 3rd party tape decks or for 3rd Party tape deck modifications."

Ai017 Eurorack Low Pass Gate First Look

video upload by AI Synthesis

"A demo video for the AI Synthesis AI017 Eurorack Low Pass Gate.
Available at aisynthesis.com
The AI017 Low Pass Gate Eurorack Module can be used as a Voltage Controlled Filter, Voltage controlled Amplifier, or both. The AI017 is an updated variation of the classic Buchla 200 Series Low Pass Gate, updated with a tunable resonance circuit, and a Depth control. Vactrols are used for control voltage, allowing for classic "ringing" and "bongo" effects.

It can be purchased as a module, or DIY Kit and PCB/Panel Set.

The Depth control compensates the vactrols inability to drop lower than 100 ohms, which can allow audio bleed on traditional Low Pass Gates. The effect can be switched on or off, as depth will attenuate the classic ringing and bongo effect. This gives the user an easy way to go from a "vintage" Low Pass Gate to a "modern" Low Pass Gate with a flick of the switch. A rear trimmer allows for the tuning of the resonance."

For the most part they are very technically based and may be a hard read for some, although each issue does include record reviews and product reviews of hardware and software which are fun to read now. Besides some bumped corners and some wear marks all of the magazines are in good condition, with one exception, the cover of Volume 8, Number 1 is a little torn at the top and the corner is folded back, but everything on the inside is perfect! The issues included are:

War of the Worlds 2023 AI by Cinematic Laboratory w/ Cameos from Todd Barton and Walker Farrell

video upload by Cinematic Laboratory

"The Hague, Netherlands, August 25, 2023 — Step into the immersive musical world of modular artist Cinematic Laboratory as it unveils its latest sonic endeavor, 'War of the Worlds 2023 AI.' The album showcases the fusion of an audio comic with music, 3D field recordings, cutting-edge AI text-to-speech dialogs and Chat GPT ghostwriting. By combining handmade sounds, real analog voltage, and digital magic, Cinematic Laboratory stretching the boundaries of 21st century 'home studio' music production.

'War of the Worlds 2023 AI' features eight music tracks that traverse between B-movie clichés and the real challenges of living in an uncertain future. Each track creates a realm where imagination intertwines with reality, taking listeners on a journey where our own fear is a formidable adversary. What sets this album apart is the groundbreaking use of AI voice actors, infusing the characters with artificial ‘overacting’ and bringing the story to life. They seem to have a mind of their own and turned the story into a comic beyond production control. It just shaped itself. While the use of 'deep fake celebrities' remains a topic of debate and controversy, it adds a bit of realism to the album. The album is accompanied by a single release called ‘Elevator Music 2023 WOTW’ which also doubles as a trailer.

Synopsis: The machinery of an extinct alien Krell civilization decides to bring a gift to Earth. The ability to materialize and realize anything you can think of. After receiving a mysterious transmission, a desert festival for open minded thinkers will be the catalyst for a worldwide invasion as our deepest fears and nightmares manifest themselves and turns against us. The Earth turns into a purple jungle infested by huge tripods, drones, zombies and fungi. Meanwhile, scientists Daisy, Brian and Walker patch up a dream machine that helps us to channel our imagination in a more constructive way. They manage to inspire the US President and together they bring this ‘immersive musical audio comic book’ to a ‘happily ever after’.

Starting from H.G. Wells' timeless book and the 1956 classic movie 'Forbidden Planet,' Cinematic Laboratory's interpretation of 'War of the Worlds' takes an unpredictable direction. Instead of an invasion from Mars, the album delves into the internal battle of the human mind, where our fears and nightmares manifest through ancient alien technology. It is a compelling exploration of the power of imagination and its ability to shape, disrupt, damage, and heal our lives. It's a force that cannot be defeated by the common cold. Just imagine growing up in a world where your reality is forged and can’t always be trusted.

As an emerging modular artist, Cinematic Laboratory is dedicated to pushing the boundaries of musical expression and storytelling. The compositions blend various modern genres and influences, creating a sonic landscape that is both alien and strangely familiar. With 'War of the Worlds 2023 AI,' Cinematic Laboratory aims to establish itself as a rogue ambient music pioneer, exploring new frontiers while sharing the experience on YouTube. The Lab currently boasts over 500 videos online and is a highly appreciated channel devoted to modular synthesis. The album features cameos from Todd Barton and Walker Farrell who make a lot of waves in the modular community.

'War of the Worlds 2023 AI' is available on all major streaming platforms on August 25. Bandcamp offers a special download and contains scripts and an instrumental bonus album.
