PING:II

Photography stops time. Music extends it. Can these two interpretations of time be one? Inter-woven by an oxymoron, PING:II explores this “limbo” in time/space through a jigsaw of two contradicting, yet related mediums. Musicians Darren Ng and Gooi Tah Choe present a discussion with audio-visual works of a joined creative process that crosses sight and sound.

Doepfer A100 modular system
Sherman Filterbank II
Moogerfooger MF105 filter
Laptop Synthesis, Live Sampling and Processing (max/msp + Plogue Bidule + Reaktor 5 + field recording playback)
Alesis Ineko
Electric Guitar + Boss RC20 looper + bow + ebow

Most of the synthesis is the A100 with no sequencers, just patching and filtering... with minimalist synthesis from max/msp, reaktor 5 and plogue bidule. Most of the filterings are done with Sherman Filterbank II and Moogerfooger MF105. This audio improvisation was performed live to visual feeds of photography by Dr Gooi Tah Choe."

"We doodled and played with gears and decided to mess around and recorded the outcome. So here's a recording of the half hour noise/synthesis/electronic improvisation session (we were just wacking). And so we went crazy on this one, some nice moments featuring the Tenori-on vs Nintendo DS lite mid way through about 17:05 onwards till about 25:30 (Pathein rawks again); and WY had some flair with my Roland SH101 as he concocted some "bleepy-droney-sireny" noises with modulations and for the cat growls at 23:25 onwards :D ... the sherman filterbank 2 seriously bled our ears, with some bird-like talks and glitches of course... Highly disturbing sounds and noises. We dare you to listen through headphones..."

Voyager Matrixsynth Edition

Thanks! : ) A Matrixsynth green Voyager would indeed be a dream come true. Man, that looks nice. Bee Jay saw my Voyager Fire edition post and created a mock-up of the ad with a Matrix Edition. Something tells me the Matrix edition would not fly due to the Movie, however a Matrixsynth edition probably would. I had the site and the green on black before the movies folks - back in Oct' 97. BTW, I ran the idea by someone at Moog and they said we would need to order 50 of them, so... We'll see. If anyone out there can pull any strings...

Casio CZ-2000S

I knew about the CZ-1000, CZ-3000, and CZ-5000 Phase Distortion synths from Casio, but not the CZ-2000S. Check out the built in speakers. It looks like the home keyboard version of the CZ series. Title link takes you to some more shots pulled from this Chinese auction sent my way via Sonicbrat. Sonicbrat was on the hunt for Chinese synths and found a few including this one. The majority of what he did find on Chinese auctions were home keyboards and arranger style workstations. If he puts a post up I'll be sure to link to it. BTW, if you know of any Chinese synths please feel free to comment.

"You absolutely can use MIDI to change banks and patches. To map the bank and patch numbers to MIDI program change numbers, do this:

1. From the two digits displayed (the bank and patch numbers), subtract 1 from each.

2. Multiply the bank number by 8 and add the patch number.

3. If the patch is from bank group B, add 64.

Make sure the rear panel MIDI function switch is in position II or III, or the 106 won't respond to the program change message.

I've heard some people say the 106 sounds thin compared to the J6 and J60. My response is that people who say that haven't spent enough time working with it. I have noticed that some people tend to use the chorus as a crutch, and don't spend enough time trying to get a good basic sound before they add the chorus.

And yes, the chorus is a bit hissy, but no more so than any other analog BBD delay device. A somewhat more severe problem is that the chorus, when combined with high-resonance filter settings, can sometimes cause rather extreme and unpredictable level excursions. Keep a compressor or limiter on the output and be happy.

I bought a J106 new in 1984. I still have it and use it frequently. And although I've created hundreds of patches on it, I still don't think I've used all of its potential."
