The Bit-52's Robot Band cover Private Idaho
Published on Mar 30, 2014 bd594·25 videos
"Fred's vocals by DECTalk Express which is also used by Stephen Hawking. Cindy and Kate's vocals utilized two HP Scanjet 3C flatbed scanners. The robot guitar, keyboard, snare and bass drum all are controlled with a couple of PIC16F84A microcontrollers.
special thanks goes out to:
Chris Rasmussen who offered to fly me and my robot band down to Athens, Georgia for the Art Rocks Athens Festival. Sadly due to my work schedule I could not make it. What he didn't know I was already secretly working on my next video so I offered to promote this great venue.
http://www.artrocksathens.com/
Pastor Snoopi Botten has provided great on-line material with respect to programming the DECTalk speech synthesizer. http://theflameofhope.co/DECTALK.html
Special thanks goes out to Greg Howley and without his help this project would of never seen the light of day.

Using Little Alter Boy - Little Alter Boy Soundtoys
video upload by Distinct Mastering
Quick note: Soundtoys is a new sponsor of MATRIXSYNTH and will be featured more often on the site. For posts featuring effects they either need be demoed with synths or they need to be applicable to synths. This video focuses on vocals but it can obviously be applied to synths. The Little Alter Boy also features a robot/vocoder mode not demoed here. That said, this gets a post. You can find Soundoys at: https://www.soundtoys.com

[DIY] SciFi Robot CMOS VCO
YouTube via lastkidontheblock. via this auction
The SciFi Robot is a Squarewave VCO with a rudimentary control voltage input. There is one potentiometer for the pitch and one for timbre control (duty cycle). You can also change the pitch with the bodycontacts. You can plug sequencers, midi2cv, etc. into the "CV-In" of the scifi robot, but it is not accurate like a professional VCO (no 1V/octave). You can also plug every active signal of a drumcomputer, synthesizer, computer, mp3-player, etc into the CV-input. So you can use it as fx-device in the effectloop of your mixer.
So you can change every active soundsignal into a squarewave-signal. The output of a drumcomputer will sound like the backgroundmusic in your favorite NES jump 'n run game. But this is just my subjectively estimate. Just listen to the samples! The Robot is powered by one 9v Battery." See this site for more info in German, and YouTube for more vids.

Jamming with Clara 2.0 the theremin playing robot doll
YouTube Uploaded by SpacedogTelevisor on Nov 3, 2007
"Named in honour of the original theremin virtuoso Clara Rockmore, Clara 2.0 is a robot doll who can play the theremin live. I call her the 'polite robot thereminist' as she listens to a line from another player and moves her dolly arm to get her own theremin in perfect tune. Well, that's the theory...
In this jamming session, Clara 2.0 is copying a line from an old Roland SH-2 synth (which I play silently), then the line from my own theremin. When the two theremins play together, it gets quite chaotic as Clara tries to follow me - and I try to lock into Clara's line.
As Clara 2.0 is continually monitoring a live sound and adjusting her tuning (no midi here), her technique has the fluid pitch of a human player. Everything on this recording - apart from the drum track - is played live. There is no manipulation of the recorded sound, apart from multitracking and a little reverb after the event. The keyboard instrument at the beginning is a cheapy toy, called an Angel Organ - I hope you can forgive its cranky tuning. The final theremin melody has been treated, live, with an old-school vocal flanger.
Clara is under continual development - she has quite a way to go before she can claim the talents of Lev (a great robot player). Keen-eyed observers may have noticed the wobbily thread of wire on the end of Clara's egg whisk. This gives her some Rockmoresque vibrato.
I do attempt to incorporate Clara 2.0 into my stage act although she can be temperamental. Recently, I've been trying to improve her earthing and capacitance so she can be set up swiftly and can work more reliably 'out of the box'.
Thanks to everyone at Dorkbot London and the Hands off Festival, 2007, for their encouragement and useful tips. In particular, I'd like to thank theremin maker Jake Rothman for his extremely useful electrical advice (Clara's insides are now lined with silver foil) and Gordon Charlton, whose virtuosic egg whisk numbers inspired Clara's current look. Thanks also to Emmet Spier for screwing her arms on better, Mike Blow for suggesting I try out this classic tune and Colin Uttley for playing the bass riff. Apologies to the great Roy Budd, composer of the jaw-droppingly gorgeous Get Carter theme.

"Thank you to Karoke Version for permission to use their vocal tracks in my video. Initially I tried to program the vocals with DECTalk but it was unintelligible. All the toys were purchased from Goodwill and Value Village. I apologized for my failed attempt to turn Elmo and Teddy Ruxpin into Zombies. The premise was to have rejected toys cast aside by society turn into a couple of Zombies. As always I didn't have enough artistic abilities and time to complete this.
Toys used
Yamaha CX5M - organ
Casio SA-9 - saxophone and bass
Hard drives - drums
Elmo - Main Vocals
Teddy Ruxpin - Backing Vocals
Tomy Omnibot - Robot Voice
All the toys were hacked and are controlled by two PIC16F84A micro controllers and a bunch of L298N H-Bridges."

Skrillex - Bangarang - Old School Computer Remix
Published on Mar 13, 2013 bd594·24 videos
I spy MATRIXSYNTH in this one. :)
".
Skrillex was the most requested so your wish is my command. Bangarang was a complicated song with respect to timing and now I have a new respect for Dubstep. For all the haters out there the audio in this video is 100% in sync with the original song. If you don't believe me then test it out for yourself.
Vocals were performed with the DECTalk Express. The same speech synthesizer used by Stephen Hawking back in the eighties. The main vocals are the Betty and Rita presets overlapped. Kit and Dan vocal presets were also used.
Back in 2009 I used an 8 inch floppy drive in my Bohemian Rhapsody video but this time I wanted to update it with Sammy1am's Arduino version. I find 3.5 inch floppy drives only sound good when playing short duraton notes with a fast tempo.
DECTalk - vocals
HP Scanjet 3C - lead
Yamaha CX-5 computer - guitar
Floppy and CDROM - lead bass solo
Modified Toy Laser Guns
Robot Bass, Snare and Cymbal"

PO-33 & PO-28: Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas
tubesockor
"A live version of 'Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas' using the Teenage Engineering PO-33 K.O. loaded with the (soon-to-be-released) sound pack #16operators, plus some solo assistance from PO-28 Robot
I was invited to contribute to the PO-33 sample pack #16operators arranged by @AA Battery where 16 different creators supplied one sample (or kit). Then the purpose was to make one song using this pack as the main component.
In my case I used the PO-33 for almost everything, except the solo parts which are handled by the PO-28 Tonic. All recorded live in one take.
Used sounds from the pack:
* (...will be revealed when sound pack is released)
The sound pack was originally planned to be released before Christmas so I made a Christmas song, but was allowed to post this video as a little preview :)"

Thingamagoop 2 from Bleep Labs
flickr By kevin dooley
"The Thingamagoop 2, an amazing "handmade, analog and digital synthesizer you control with light" from Bleep Labs.
This is definitely the most bizarre "instrument" I have ever played, and one of the most fun, and I look forward to making some random noise symphonies.
This little robot is very 2012-ish."
