Laser Pig live rig synth jam - Renoise, Nord Lead, CS2x

"Testing my new and improved live rig for Laser Pig, one of the music projects i have on the go. I've gigged with a setup almost like this before but i've now added an audio interface and switched from SEQ 24 to Renoise 3 running in Lubuntu. My Netbook is only a 1.2Ghz dual core yet Renoise runs amazing well.

So in this setup i'm sequencing midi to the Nord Lead 1 from Renoise which is also doing a few percussion samples. The Nord is routed through Renoise's Convolver reverb through a nice little 'Pulse' 2 in 2 out usb interface i found on a carboot sale yesterday for 4 whole pounds. I've programmed my CS2x to play a sort of digital piano type tone, something that it seems to be very good at, especially when a subtle bit of LFO is added as each voice has it own LFO that are not synced so things get stirred up very nicely. I've added a bit of the Mini Kaoss pad's delay to the CS2x too. I'm cueing patterns live in Renoise with a Korg Nano Kontrol. Everything is mixed through a Xenyx 1002 mixer and the recorded on my desktop machine.

All in all i find this setup very intuitive and fun to use, plenty of power but not so many options that nothing gets done.

"Last weekend we took the Mad Music Machine to Horsham Piazza Italia. We showed young children how we could sample their voices and gave them the microphone and told them to say anything they liked.

We had some interesting results from the many children (and adults) that took part!

Our favourite moment was when a family with 3 young children created a tune involving 'Peppa Pig' sounds - including of course, some 'oinks'.

Next time we do this we will ensure we can record their creations for them but here Caitlin is recreating their tune with the original voice samples, together with the beats as best as she can remember them.

For a bit of fun I have also added the Peppa Pig melody to the Mother-32 sequencer."

Korg SQ-1 Sequencer controls Yamaha CS01II Synth & a Guinea Pig

"Just got this Korg SQ-1 and did some noodling with it and my Yamaha CS01II analog synth (which has had cv/gate inputs installed). The nice thing about the SQ-1 is that you can switch it to Hz/V, which is what the CS01II takes. The first part covers the different waveforms with a musical sequence, and the second part is drums done with filtered white noise. The synth was recorded direct with no FX or processing."

The Waldorf microWavePC or micro WavePC. Curious what the EWS stands for. Electronic Wavetable Synthesizer? Excellent Waldorfian Supersynth?

P.S. I swear I've seen one before, but this just might be the first one to be featured on the site.

"It [EWS] stands for Eierlegende WollmilchSau. Terratec used the EWS name for a series of soundcards.

The term 'eierlegende Wollmilchsau' is often used to describe product, which can do everything and more. It describes an animal, which is a hybrid out of chicken (can lay eggs), sheep (produces wool), cow (gives milk) and pig (in German Sau or Schwein). Translated it would then be: egg-laying wool-milk-pig. This is not working out in English, since the English language is missing the option of composing new words out of existing. Like Donaudampfschif...

There is a German Wikipedia entry for EWS only. But here is a nice visualization, of how a EWS may look like.

Coming back to the Terratec microWave PC. This a special version of the Microwave II/XT, but it runs a different OS. The latest OS for Microwave II/XT was not ported over back in time, so the Terratec microWave PC lacks a few features. On Sequencer.de there was a recent thread about soundsets for the Terratec microWave PC, where forum member Summa posted some converted banks. I made it available for download."

"This collection was born to offer to the users of Sh-201 some famous and great sounds, not included in the presets. Here you can find some good tips that will help you to play our patches in the best way! ;)

On The Run:
This Patch is programmed to have the Upper part with the filter cutoff originaly starting to 0, so, all you have to do is... open it slowly! And play with some resonance, keyfollow and LFO! :)

Snarling pig:
I suggest you to play this patch activating only one time the octave button to traspose the keyboard down. The Snarling Pig it's a bass sound so you can have a good range of notes if you do that.

D/C Feedback Bass:
In this patch you had the first two octaves that play the bass sound, and all the upper keys that plays feedback. Feedback starts slowly in the upper keys and starts faster on the lower key sections. Use the octave Transpose to up for great Larsen/Feedback effect. Basicly the sounds starts distorted, for a clean sound, just deactivate the Overdrive button.

Screaming Saw:
This patch is very simple to play: for activate the scratching on the sound you only have to use the Modulation Joystick. For a good Scratching i suggest you to just touching a little bit the Mod. Joystick for a realistic effect.

"We were going for the ultimate Pigtronix Mothership Guitar Synth patch. This is what we came up with!

Besides our lack of good time this setup is incredibly fun. We used every Pigtronix pedal except the awesome Philosopher's Tone Compressor and the brutal PolySaturator distortion.

This is a pure squarewave synth tone from the MGS, no dry guitar. The AttackSustain really pulls the guitar synth patch together. It's an audio triggered envelope with variable attack and decay times. The Disnortion sounds so cool we had to turn all three, overdrive, fuzz and octave-up on. The EP-1 is doing a super-slow phase while the Echolution is giving us a cool modulated slapback echo.
