Sequentix P3

Click here for shots via this auction. These shots are about as good as it gets. Be sure to see them full size. There is also a nice shot of the x0xb0x in the set.

"Here's another one of those items where if you have come across the auction, you probably know what it is. Well, just in case you don't, this is one of the exceedingly rare Sequentix P3 hardware MIDI sequencers. According to Colin Fraser, the amazing man behind the Sequentix P3, there are only, at most, 247 of these sequencers in the world, with that number assuming that every single one sold as a kit was actually assembled. The real number of completed, functional P3 sequencers is probably far lower than this. It's very, very rare that one shows up on eBay, especially one as well-cared for and unused as this. This may be one of the nicest P3s left.

To quote from Sequentix's About P3 page:

The P3 Sequencer is an 8 track, hardware MIDI sequencer, with a user interface comprised of knobs, keys and LEDs. A sixteen character by two line PLED display provides confirmation of pattern data and access to advanced features and configuration options.

P3 allows real-time control of track mutes and simple pattern or pattern chain selection across multiple tracks, plus analogue-style editing of patterns. Each of its 384 patterns has independent values for note, velocity, tie, gate, length, gate delay, and a combination of up to four MIDI controllers, extra notes, or 'auxiliary events', per step.

P3's unique auxiliary events allow the creation of dynamically self-modifying patterns. They can grab values from other tracks, randomise steps, alter track and global settings, and much more. There are three modulation 'accumulators' per track, that can be used as LFOs, perform arpeggiation effects or enable complex pattern progressions.

Furthermore, you can assign front panel knobs to modify or mask these events in real-time, allowing you to create interactive patterns that change predictably as you adjust the knobs - varying in complexity, controlling levels of randomness, even 'morphing' from one pattern to another.

A Force-to-scale option provides preset and user-defined scales to keep everything in key (but defeat-able per pattern step if required), and a configurable 'change mode' allows patterns with different lengths and/or time-bases to free-run, or be synced to a global bar.

What's even better about this P3 is that it comes fitted with Sequentix's just-released (and essentially sold out) add-on for the P3, the P3 MemX Memory Expansion Board. Normally under the v4 firmware there are 24 bars of pattern storage for each of the 16 banks (384 bars total). With the MemX board installed there are 224 bars for each bank, bringing the total to 3584 bars! This is more than nine times the storage of most other Sequentix P3s. The P3 MemX was only available directly from Colin, but because because this P3 comes with the MemX installed, you don't have to worry about finding one, opening up the P3, and installing it yourself. It's already done! I will also include the memory chip which was removed in order to install the MemX, for... well... just in case you can find a use for it."

Impact of EU Ban of Leaded Solder and the Sequentix P3

Remember the EU Ban of Leaded Solder? Apparently this may have a greater impact than we anticipated. Not only will it impact vinatage gear, but new botique manufactures may find it too expensive to continue with planned projects. Case in point, the Sequentix P3 being phased out. Title link takes you to a post on sequencer.de, with comments from Sequentix. The following are excerpts. The good news? There will be a new sequencer from Sequentix as alluded to in my previous post.

"The Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment directive becomes law in the UK next year. This directive makes manufacturers responsible for ensuring electronic equipment is recycled at the end of its life. While that is not a bad idea, the proposed UK implementation will require manufacturers to join a ‘disposal scheme’. They will pay into the scheme some amount related to the amount of product they sell. Where this may become a problem is if there is a high minimum level of payment required. That could make low-volume production uneconomical."

"One thing that won't feature on the next sequencer will be the name "P4". Google on P3 and you get 60 million irrelevant pages. For P4 that rises to nearer 90 million. Whereas if you Google on Sequentix, the vast majority of hits refer to the P3 Sequencer. We'll need to come up with a more distinctive name..."

Vinyl Debut by NYZ - SHFTR FRQ - Featuring Aphex Twin's Sequentix Cirklon & PreenFM2

"+ [Special note for track A9 - SHFTR_CA#BB1] => A huge shout of thanks to Richard D James for gifting me a Sequentix Cirklon sequencer and PreenFM2 synth during my Regional Arts Fellowship in 2017! This was the first track I made using this gear. You can also read up more about my open source Farey Sequence FM programming tool for the PreenFM here =>
github.com/noyzelab/FareyPreenFM2

++ Folks interested in using cellular automata can also check out my open source Arduino based synth module here =>
github.com/noyzelab/uMANIAC"

NYZ of Noyzelab has a new release out on neon orange vinyl (limited to 300 copies) titled SHFTR FRQ which features PreenFM2 sequenced by the Sequentix Cirklon. You will find a track off the release above. Below you will find some exclusive pics sent my way from NYZ and info on the release from Forced Exposure where it is available in the US. The album is available in the UK from Boomkat here. Update: it's also available at Phonica Records, Norman Records, Juno Records, Redeye Records, and Bleep.

"The Death of Rave is honored to plate up the vinyl debut by NYZ; the cult, algorithmic/ generative music project of award-winning artist/scientist Dave Burraston (Bryen Telko, Noyzelab). The A-side revolves 14 succinct blatz, ranging from cranky percussive pieces to queered microtonal dissonance and SAW II-like atmospheres -- notably including one track made on a Sequentix Cirklon sequencer and PreenFM2 synth gifted him by Richard D. James. The B-side contains a steeply immersive spectral drone tract that (never) ends in a locked groove, especially cut at D&M, Berlin. The results are wholly unique and speak to the endless, playfully experimental variation of NYZ's art/research. They reveal visceral, alien microcosms of curdled microtonal tunings and proprioceptive chicanery bound to thrill and induce strange, new sensations in even the most hard-to-please fiend of electronic music. It's strongly recommended to followers of Russell Haswell's chaotic gnash, the mind-bending tunings of Aphex Twin, the visionary algorithmic scapes of Roland Kayn, and Eliane Radigue's microtonal meditations. In Dave's own words:

"SHFTR FRQ is a series of experimental studies into simple synth setups controlled by varying levels of generative complex systems [MANIAC cellular automata]. SHFTR FRQ was recorded over the last six years on an ever-changing hybrid of equipment encompassing the domains of modular and MIDI-based microtonal sound synthesis [analog and digital]. Setups were always ultra-minimalist, often with just the MANIAC cellular automata sequencer and one or two modules/synths to provide a consistent sensory focus. The studies range from ultra-short sequences, micro-ditties, investigatory motifs, to a full length high spectral drone meditation."

Burraston has previously collaborated with Alan Lamb on recordings of a mile-long telephone wire in the Australian outback, and more recently he issued nearly a dozen NYZ tapes and CDs with some of the most crucial modern music labels, as well as a number of releases under the Noyzelab and Bryen Telko aliases. In 2014, Dave self-published SYROBONKERS!, the most technical and in-depth interview ever given by Aphex Twin. Screen-printed jacket. RIYL: Russell Haswell, Aphex Twin, Eliane Radigue, EVOL/ALKU, Roland Kayn."

Sequentix P3

via this auction. via Rod.

click image for the full size shots.

"the very last Sequentix P3 sequencer ever made, serial #1138, considered by many to be one of the best, if not the most powerful step sequencers ever made. It's like having 16 ARP sequencers at your disposal with full programmable MIDI control over pretty much every parameter on your synth, and realtime control over the direction and notes. It's an amazing machine, but one I can't afford to own at the present time. Full details on what this can do are on the Internet or are listed at the Sequentix Web site (www.sequentix.com). I've successfully used it to trigger both MIDI and analog synths via my Kenton Pro-4 converters. This was the very last production unit sold out of a total of 137 that were ever made (or ever will be made), so it's a one-of-a-kind unit. I paid over $2200 for it several months ago but just haven't had the time to use it to its full potential. It's been lightly used in my studio with zero (0) scratches anywhere on it and kept turned off when not in use."

"Published on Jan 11, 2017
This is complete session video of my dawless improvisation on the new Minimoog Model D. I started with sort of brass patch with filter modulation and filter tweaking and little bit more of glide, but it develops and changes to not so brassy lead throughout the video. Sequences on the background are Erebus by Dreadbox and Telemark-K as well as DSI Polyevolver.

Sequentix Cirklon: Live Jam 12-2-13—Echo Return

Published on Dec 2, 2013 Echo Return

"Live jam on Sequentix Cirklon, 12-2-13.

Gear used:
Sequentix Cirklon
Roland TR-707 (Circuit bent)
Roland TR-727 (Circuit bent)
Ladyada x0xb0x
Yamaha AN-200
Yamaha DX-200
Alesis 3630 Compressor
Electrix Warp Factory vocoder
Novation A-Station
Yamaha MEP4
TC Electronic M-300 stereo delay
Line6 Filter Pro
PreSonus Studio One DAW

PreSonus Studio One is used for audio recording, compression, and reverb. No MIDI.

This is my first live jam on the Cirklon. All sequences created in Cirklon. MIDI sent to Ladyada x0xb0x is also sent to Yamaha MEP-4, which is sending three MIDI-delays of this sequence to the Novation A-Station, each on separate octaves.

AN-200 signal is fed through Alesis 3630, gate is triggered by rim shot sound from the Roland TR-707. The Yamaha AN-200 is then routed through Filter Pro and M-300. Setting the Cirklon's pattern to "Brownian" makes for some great, unpredictable-but-musically-relevant gating effects.

Yamaha DX-200 signal is fed through Electrix Warp Factory with no formant input, for creepy robot chanting sounds.

Pseudorandom drum 'improvisation' is created by a track on the Cirklon where toms and additional snares have a 30% chance of triggering per step."

Yamaha GX1 w/ Speakers, Programmers & MIDI+

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this VEMIA listing

Click the auction link on top when you get there for additional listings.

VEMIA is Peter Forrest's auction house. He is the author of The A-Z of Analogue Synthesizer Books.

"A GX1 is an iconic instrument in any condition, but this one has had the benefit of Colin (Sequentix) Fraser's close attentions over many years. It was bought by Richard James [Aphex Twin] at VEMIA many years ago from Mickie Most's studio. It spent some years in his studio, until it was transported to Colin and eventually to his studio in Berlin, with the principal aim of getting it 100% working again and installing MIDI.

It is complete, with the main console, bench, pedals, two massive speakers, two programmers, and all cabling.

Working order: after some painstaking work at the Sequentix studio it is in full working order as envisaged by Yamaha all those years ago. The two original programmers attach to the Tone Board (patch CV controller) for the Solo keyboard. That board connects on an internal loop to the other manuals, so the programmers can be assigned to any manual for patch editing.

Under the surface there has been an incredible amount of work from Colin: he is in the process of producing a preliminary brochure for his MIDI retrofit, which makes fascinating reading and shows the depth of his exploration of the GX1's architecture - and his huge ability to problem-solve and create new possibilities as well. This brochure would of course be included with the GX1, along with all other literature available. It can also be emailed to prospective buyers on request via Peter Forrest.

At present the polyphonic manuals have full MIDI control. The Solo and Pedal manuals have external CV input Colin has been driving from Cirklon CV outputs. The Rhythm machine has external trigger inputs added, and they are being controlled by a Cirklon D-mux drum trigger module.

Extras: there are a lot of further permutations that could be arranged direct with Colin after the auction. This would depend on the new owner's wishes. For instance one person might want the GX1 as original as possible, and another might want bells and whistles - Colin has designed and prototyped a programmer for the extended sound capabilities he has envisaged, and if required, could extend the MIDI capabilities to the bass pedals.

Cosmetic condition: please see the photos. It is generally in gorgeous condition. The louvred flap on top of the keyboard seems to have some paint damage on the two inner sections, but that looks simple to remove to respray if necessary.

Transport: this is not as daunting as you might imagine. Colin has devised an excellent system for moving it, so that either transporting it by road or crating it for air or sea shipment will be well practicable and safe.

Extras: if the new owner is tempted by Colin's possible add-ons, such as his improved additional Sequentix GX1 Programmer, MIDI bass pedals, or other add-ons, these would be negotiated separately directly with him after the main auction payment."

Analogue electronica studio jam - rozz3r: Bonfire Calm

YouTube Uploaded by rozz3r on Nov 6, 2011

"Getting away from the Mac/PC to make music is a joy. In the last year or so I've been making gear purchases with the goal of writing electronic music 'live', with the computer doing nothing except acting as a glorified tape recorder. The whole rig is based around a Sequentix P3 sequencer which provides a gloriously stable midi clock as well as midi sequences. The nice thing about the P3 is it can do generative sequencing in quite a controlled manner, which suits my repetitive yet evolving music style.

My various synths and effect boxes are hooked up to a Soundtracs Topaz 24 track mixer, which allows me to do dub-style 'playing the mixer', riding faders and jamming with effects sends, feedback loops etc. The cast list is pretty much this:

- Sequentix P3
- Suzuki SX-500 (poly analog)
- Kurzweil PC3
- Moog Little Phatty
- Dave Smith Evolver
- Eurorack Modular
- Korg ER-1
- Kurzweil Mangler
- Eventide TimeFactor
- Eventide Space
- hand built dual 1176 compressor clone
- Golden Age Pre-73 Mic pre-amp

The video is really my first attempt at using all this together and performing a song live. It uses pretty much everything on the list above except the Kurzweil PC3 and the Evolver. The modular is doing the melody, the ER1 is on drums (going through the Pre-73 and the 1176 to give it some balls), the SX500 is doing chords and the Moog I play live. The Eventide Space is doing all the reverb work. I used Presonus's Studio One 2 to record everything to separate audio tracks and then did some basic mix tweaking. No additional effects were used. I'm new to Studio One and I'm impressed so far, I haven't had to look at the manual once, which means they got it right. It also feels solid and hasn't crashed once.

This experiment was proof of concept really, I have a Dave Smith Tempest on the way which will make drum performances a lot more fun and dynamic. I also need to use Parts on the Sequentix more in order to make more structured changes in the song progression. Expect more live jams soon :)"

"Very cool sequencer. Comes w/ CVIO expansion board installed and Burr Elm wood ends, very beautiful. If CV is your thing you would still need to order the external cvio breakout box to connect to cv hardware, it's available on the sequentix website... Built in December of 2017 out of Sequentix's new Berlin factory..."

Sequentix P3

images via this auction

"The unit is mint... fresh as the day I opened the box.
1. It has the rack ears and the unopened wooden cheeks.
2. The P3 MemX - Memory Expansion Board still in the packet.
3. The original manual.
4. An extra printed and bound copy of the manual with plastic cover.
5. A printed and bound copy of the user guide with similar plastic cover.
6. The adapter is of course included and original.

1. Serial number 1094, one of the last few built I believe. Perfect working order no issues, no problems, bright LCD.
With any luck another sequentix sequencer will be available in a few years... when I'm not neck deep in studies.

Yamaha GX1 on Sequentix.com

Sequentix.com has a page up on the GX1. You can find it here. Currently there are only images including some of the inside and the separate programming interface. Note that Sequentix makes the P3 Sequencer and the MIDIBass 303 retrofit.

Note the bottom shot is one individual voice board with encased modules for each filter, VCA and VCO. I'm not sure how many cards are in the GX1, but if you click through you will see an image showing them lined up. I counted 50 cards, but some appear to be different than others.
