DiscoDSP Releases Retromulator Based on The Usual Suspects dsp56300 Engine

via DiscoDSP

[Note: although DiscoDSP gives credit to The Usual Suspects, it's my understanding TUS is not happy about it. From a forum:
"He basically took our source, put his own wrapper on it and is trying to sell it and use it to promote his own business. Can't prevent it, but frankly this is reprehensible IMHO.

Yes. He knows he cannot legally "sell" it due to the licensing model our code is published under. Therefore he sells "support" of "his development efforts" to include difficult things like "git clone" and other Arcane and extremely difficult stuff. sigh... I'd strongly advise anyone using it not to actually pay him for it, but that is just my opinion.]
What isn't clear is whether the UI is just the player above or includes the full editors by The Usual Suspects. I'm hearing it's just the player, which in effect might be an upsell for the full editors by The Usual Suspects.

That said:

"Retromulator brings legendary hardware cores back to life through authentic low-level emulation. The virtual analog synths are powered by a faithful recreation of the Motorola DSP 56300 processor, the Yamaha DX7 runs a full emulation of its original chip set, and the Akai S1000 sampler plays your SF2, SFZ, and Bliss sample banks with studio-quality interpolation. Each core runs its actual firmware or sample data — delivering the unmistakable character of hardware that defined electronic music from the early 80s through the 2000s.

Unlike traditional software emulations that recreate synthesizer behavior by approximation, Retromulator emulates the original integrated circuits at the hardware level. The virtual analog synths run on a cycle-accurate Motorola DSP 56300, the Yamaha DX7 runs a full emulation of its Hitachi HD6303R sub-CPU and Yamaha YM21280/YM21290 EGS/OPS chip set, and the Akai S1000 sampler runs on the SFZero v3.0.0 engine with 8-point sinc interpolation supporting SF2, SFZ, ZBP, and ZBB sample banks. Each core executes its authentic firmware or sample data exactly as intended.

Load the ROM firmware from your own hardware or sample banks from your library, place them in the designated folder, and Retromulator takes care of the rest. The result is not an approximation — it is the real hardware running inside your DAW.

Retromulator is built on Gearmulator, an open-source synthesizer emulation project by the dsp56300 team. We are grateful for their extraordinary work in bringing these classic instruments back to life."

You can find demos of the dsp56300 engines in previous posts here.

Syntakt 1.40 – 7 Power-Ups That Completely Redefine It

video upload by Sineway

"Syntakt firmware 1.40 just dropped - and yes, it plays samples now. But that's not the real story.

After spending serious time with this firmware, I found 7 power-ups that completely change what this machine is capable of. We're talking new oscillator colors, evolving morph engines, harmonic stacking with real instrument samples, character layering that captures the soul of your synths, track linking with analog filter routing, stereo filter panning, and performance upgrades that make jamming more intuitive than ever.

This isn't about drum one-shots. This is about what sampling unlocks for sound design, harmony, and musicality on a machine that already had serious creative depth.

All sounds in this video come from my own sample library recorded from my synthesizers — including the Novation Peak, Sequential Fourm, and Arturia AstroLab 37. The full sample pack and project files are available on my Patreon.

Chapters:
0:00 Intro
0:21 The new machine: SP Twin Shot
0:50 Power-Up 1: Oscillator Mode - Adding new colors to your sound
2:22 Using more traditional oscillators
3:06 How to make a static one-shot sample sound more animated
5:05 Power-Up 2: Morph Engine - Evolving, rich sounds
6:05 Macros make the morphing even more powerful
7:13 Power-Up 3: Harmonic Stacking - Play chords with one voice
9:21 Power-Up 4: Character Layering - Steal the soul of a synth
11:25 How to add sustain to one-shot sounds

midiphy 4 x zetaSID Song

video upload by Avrilcadabra

"Hi everyone, These are midiphy eurorack modules.

Disclaimer I have marked this video as Paid Promotion although I was not paid to make this or any video, I was sent these to test before release.

The zetaSID modules are based on the legendary Midibox Sid Synthesizer.
They contain the lead and drum engines from the Midibox Sid and use Hermits (creator of Sid Wizard tracker) Sid emulation.

Each zetaSID contains 3 voices and filter as you would expect from an Sid chip ( The Sid chip is the sound chip from the legendary Commodore 64 home computer from the 80's )

So each zetaSID is a like one commodore 64. If you have multiple zetaSID's they can be linked together with supplied ribbon cables internally to add them to the Phybus, midiphy's way of having all modules being able to talk to each other. They then can work in unison, as stereo pairs, monophonically or for polyphony so a lot of different ways to use them. Of course I wanted to test how I could use them multitimbrally, and in this example I have them unlinked (not physically you can do it from the menus)

The midi module is Nexus Midi by midiphy and allows you to control the zetaSID's via regular midi over the Phybus (they do support cv gate also)

zetaSID 1 is using the drum engine, here I have split, kick, snare and hats over different voices on a single zetaSID, so indeed you can play a kick, hat and snare at the time time if patched this way.

zetaSID 2 is the lead sound, it is going through some hall reverb in this example. It shows off legato bends and using the impressive wave sequencer to increase vibrato over time (like tables if you are familiar with trackers)

zetaSID 3 Uses the Arp to provide classic c64 Arp sounds, I am just sending chords to this module over midi and it is handling the arps itself. It actually has 3 arpeggiators, one per voice, so a stereo pair of zetasids can run SIX arps with completely different settings at the same time from a single patch, impressive.

zetaSID 4 Is using one of the factory presets Den of Saws, I've just high passed it a bit since we are using a lot harmonically rich voices in this song.

This was midi sequenced via a Dirtywave M8 Tracker.

I will show more of the zetaSID's, as they are very powerful and very deep, the amount of modulation they have is outstanding even has Logic Gates, you can literally XOR lfo's together and I need to say if you are seeing this video and thinking you want like to write songs on these that program change isn't currently implemented, but is a high priority on the roadmap.

If you like my music I have a bandcamp here https://avrilcadabra.bandcamp.com/
And you can find me on streaming services and socials also."

Fieldtone Weaver Eurorack // The Happy Accidents Module // Full walkthrough and patches

video upload by Lesjamusic

Pedal version previously featured here.

"The Fieldtone Weaver is a two-second sampler with a single knob, no undo, and no going back. Now it's in eurorack.

Weaver captures two seconds of audio - via the built-in microphone or audio input - and instantly randomises it into evolving loops, rhythms, and textures. Every turn of the knob generates a completely new variation. Nothing saves, nothing recalls. It's the ultimate happy accidents machine.
The modular version adds individual level control for three loop elements, trigger outputs that double as a random rhythm generator, a pitch switch, clock sync, and CV control - which works differently to what you might expect. I go into detail on all of this.

The Gas Club, Episode 1 - Hugh Jones, Fieldtone Instruments.

video upload by Soundgas

"Welcome to our new series, The Gas Club. Where we meet people who make things - be that music, recording devices, or instruments.

In the first episode Tony meets Hugh Jones of Fieldtone Instruments at the Soundgas HQ to explore the history of Fieldtone's celebration creations. They take a deep dive into Hugh's journey from musician/engineer to designer/builder of the Box of Uncertainty, The Weaver one knob handheld sampler and brand new Weaver Module plus a sneak peak at what to expect next from Fieldtone in 2026.

Tony and Hugh discuss the joy of sonic adventure and gear designed to produce happy accidents and the experiences of bringing new creations to the world."

A few pics and details on Weaver Eurorack:

Weaver Modular from Fieldtone is a Eurorack format version of the highly in demand Weaver handheld sampler that featured in music tech tastemaker Andrew Huang’s year round up as his Favourite Desktop FX module of 2024. The modular edition builds on the functionality of the original by adding a variety of additional control.

The Weaver is no ordinary audio sampler, it is a meditation on impermanence and chance. With a single, enigmatic knob, it embraces randomness as an artistic principle, reconfiguring two-second sound bites into hypnotic loops and evolving textures. There is no undo button, no way back once a sound is captured; the Weaver insists that you move forward, shaping the unpredictable into rhythm or texture with nothing more than a twist of the wrist or control voltage change.

New functionality on the device includes separate level controls of different elements of the loop, as well as 3 x trigger outputs which turns the device into a random rhythm generator for which you don't even need to be using the sampling capabilities. You can trigger the Recording start via CV, allowing you to keep replacing the sample whilst the loop continuously plays - something that works beautifully with acoustic sound sources such as guitar or voice, as well as electronics. A switch has also been added to select between Random or Root note sympathetic pitch playback.

Features:

Single-knob audio sampler focussed on randomness and exploration

Capture sound via built-in microphone or input jack

Fixed two-second sample time

No undo function, every knob movement generates a new loop

External sync via Clock input

Stereo output on separate L&R sockets with rich spatial movement

Synton Fenix IId: I love this compact, feature-rich system.

video upload by batchas

"I don't think I ever posted this one. Most probably because I hesitated (and then forgot I did the video), far to have the time and most of all the skills that others have online to describe a synth or make a demo.
I found this video made in 2024 on an external hard drive and decided this morning I'd upload it on my channel and make it public. I hope this demonstrates the wealth of features available on this modular synthesizer."

Semiqiuncentennial Tension

video upload by Rhythmicons

"An EMS VCS3 does a throbbing drone. The Moog Model 10 is sequenced by a synthesizers dotcom q960/q119 with a little help from the Mos-Lab envelope.

The Serge comprised of licensed circuits by Elby Designs, Catgirl Synth, all lovingly paneled and assembled by Rich at Lower West Side Studios of Canada. There is a Buchla clone of a Source of Uncertainty module assembled and paneled by Jason Fry of Free State FX that is randomizing various parts of an M401 Multimode (Arp 1047 clone) also built by LWSS.
From the 401, the audio heads to the Analog Craftsman Gristleizer. The result is a little rhythmic bubbling.

The title is a nod to Tricky’s Pre-millennium Tension album but nevertheless reflective of the current zeitgeist.

But hey, no sirens this time!

In the meantime I crave my own."

via Baloran:

"The psychedelic The 3FX

After sculpting sound in space with The 3B, The 3FX explores the creation of sound spaces capable of transcending all your instruments.

ARCHITECTURE

The heart of The 3FX is built around three fully independent effect voices, each based on a coherent 8-module architecture:

Two delays per voice, usable in series or in parallel
An advanced, progressive feedback path up to controlled self-oscillation
An analog 12 dB/octave multimode VCF (BP, LP, HP) to optionally process the audio spectrum, both on the delay lines and on the dry signal
Independent levels for the dry signal and each delay line
A panorama control to position the voice within the stereo field.
The stereo input signal is distributed across the three voices: left / left + right / right. A mono signal is distributed across all three voices.
Each voice can be used alone, stacked or combined with the others to create textures impossible to achieve with a conventional delay.

"Nymira is a standalone harmony instrument designed around the circle of fifths. Its sonic engine draws from the overtone series, offering detailed timbral control across seven individual partials. Three distinct models explore different synthesis methods; one rooted in additive FM synthesis, another in classic subtractive design, and one based on granular synthesis. Together, they provide a new, expressive way to shape rich and complex harmonic textures.

Nymira is the only instrument in the world that maps the Circle of Fifths to a physical interface. Nymira is designed with Western harmonic theory at the core, allowing you to discover beautiful chord progressions that are much harder to play on other instruments.

Like all Terraphones, Nymira is assembled by hand, and is housed in solid walnut. Underneath Nymira’s keys are Cherry MX Silent Red keyswitches that offer a clean, tactile experience. With the ability to run on four rechargeable AA batteries, Nymira lets you play anywhere. Inside Nymira are two surface transducers that turn the walnut enclosure into a speaker of its own. Playing Nymira in this mode allows you to hear its warm sonic engine played through the walls of its walnut housing. Nymira also excels in the studio. It is equipped with USB MIDI out, and a stereo 1/4" audio output. If you don’t want to use batteries, Nymira can be powered via USB-C with any device that supplies 4-17 volts.

Aurelia, by Terraphones

video upload by Terraphones

"Aurelia is a wind instrument that bridges acoustic expression and electronic sound. It responds to both breath and touch, translating natural, human gestures into rich melodies. Aurelia’s key layout is unique to all other wind instruments, giving you the ability to play in every major and minor key with equal ease. Aurelia was created to feel as inviting to the novice as it is deeply expressive to the professional.

Aurelia’s keys use Cherry MX Silent Red keyswitches, giving you the accuracy and speed that can be found on the most well-tuned wind instruments. Housed in a handmade, solid walnut enclosure, Aurelia has a striking visual aesthetic that also feels extremely comfortable in the hands.

Aurelia has a unique sonic engine that uses warm, analog-modeled oscillators, creating a gradient of sound qualities that work well with both acoustic and electronic musical environments.

While playing solo melodies is at Aurelia’s core, it also has a Counterpoint Mode that will harmonize with you as you play. Just choose a key, and Aurelia will figure out the rest.

The device has got seven operational modes for different effects and comes with a wide range of control signal inputs and internal control possibilities. The unit features a microcontroller for relay switching and timing tasks such as tap tempo and time division. However the signal chain and clock generation are fully analog and built using state-of-the-art components.

The other very unique feature to the device is a vacuum tube distortion stage located before BBD circuits. It consists of four NOS Special quality pentodes in total. The amount of distortion is continuously adjustable without affecting the overall signal level. In addition to this, the spectrum of the distortion can be selected.
