Korg USA Mourns the Passing of Jack Hotop, Legendary Sound Designer and Innovator

Some sad news in via Korg.

You can find posts on MATRIXSYNTH featuring Jack Hotop here for a look back on his influence in the synthesizer community. The first post was a simple pic back in 2006.

Press release from Korg follows:

Over a 40-Year Career, the Influential Synthesist and Accomplished Touring Keyboardist Shaped the Sonic Architecture of More Than 100 Landmark Instruments, Including the Historic M1 Workstation

MELVILLE, N.Y. - Korg USA announces with deep sadness the passing of longtime employee, celebrated sound designer, and musical instrument industry icon Jack Hotop. Joining Korg USA (then Unicord) in 1983, Hotop started as Senior Voicing Manager and spent over four decades driving the development, sound design, programming, voicing, and product demonstrations for more than 100 Korg products. As a pioneering engineer and exceptionally skilled performer, his extensive contributions helped guide the evolution of synthesizers and digital workstations from the early 1980s through the modern era, leaving an indelible imprint on instruments used by musicians around the world and for generations to come.

Hotop’s foundational expertise was anchored in a rigorous musical and technical background. Raised in a musical family, he began piano lessons at age seven, inspired by his father, a musician featured on several Broadway cast recordings, and numerous pianists on his mother’s side. By age 14, he was actively performing in local bands on a Gibson 101 organ. He pursued formal training at the Berklee College of Music, majoring in arranging, composition, and accompaniment, before expanding into emerging music technology at the Boston School of Electronic Music under Roger Powell. It was there that Hotop established his core synthesis fundamentals using early hardware including the ARP Odyssey, 2600, 2500, and EMS Synthi, building a deep understanding of waveforms, envelopes, low-frequency oscillators, and modulators.

introducing splines

video upload by Þ

"A first tour of the new splines eurorack module by thorn.audio out now.
For more information please visit the manual page at:
://thorn.audio/splines"

This one was sent my way via Meska.

"Splines is a visual vector curve generator in Eurorack format, with a wide frequency range and a built in quantizer, cv scope and cv processing capability.

It can be used in ways similar to a wavetable VCO, LFO, step sequencer or envelope generator.

Onboard quantizer scales, backups and firmware updates are managed as you would use an external USB drive.

It’s a small, shallow, multifaceted addition to any setup, and for touring rigs it can fill many roles in exchange for little space and weight.

in depth.
In the technical sense "splines" are most commonly used in 3d modelling, animation and vector graphics. It's essentially just a way of creating a curved path from one point to another.

In this module, you have up to sixteen user configurable points or nodes which function much like a step sequencer, where the X axis represents time and the Y axis represents voltage.

When the phase(time) reaches the X position of a node, the 1v/oct output changes to the Y position value of that node.

Each of the sixteen nodes also has a configurable trigger setting, determining if the gate output goes high when the phase crosses the X position of the node.

The nodes are connected by a spline and the shape of this spline is determined by three parameters; Tension, Continuity and Bias. The spline output gives you a voltage following this curve.

Tension changes how extreme the curve between the nodes is.

Continuity sets the angle of the spline at the node.

FREE SYNTH: NILS' KAWAI K1v (Kawai K1 Emulator) - No talking demo

video upload by ADL-MusicLab

"Hello everyone!

Here's to you my "No talking demo" of this FREE emulation of the Kawai K1 synthesizer developed by Nils Schneider, which brings back to life this iconic synthesizer!

The Kawai K1 is a famous japanese classic from 1988 and it was a massive success with both the critics and the public. The company managed to reportedly shift around 50,000 of them. There also was a rackmount version (K1r) and a tabletop option (K1m).

The key to its popularity was certainly down to its sound, which combined single-cycle additive waves with PCM samples. There was another reason though: in the late 80's this D-50-style sample synthesis was out of reach of most musicians, but then the Kawai K1 came along and it was much cheaper than the Roland D-50!

Now you can have it in your DAW with this amazing FREE software emulation!

The Crow Hill Company Introduces the THE SH*T SYNTH

The Sh*t Synth - Walkthrough video upload by CROW HILL XTRAS

Press release follows:

The Crow Hill Company turns to extensive and rare collection to turn out THE SH*T SYNTH as compendium of 48 circuit-, wave- and sample-bent instruments

EDINBURGH, UK: The Crow Hill Company is proud to turn to its own extensive and rare collection of hardware to turn out THE SH*T SYNTH — available as a compendium of 48 circuit-, wave- and sample-bent instruments inspired by some of the Edinburgh-based enterprise’s eclectic musical favourites (spanning the likes of Aphex Twin, Boards Of Canada, Joe Maus, Jon Brion, Laurie Spiegel, Radiohead, Throbbing Gristle, and Yazoo) to create something that they collectively ask: is it just shit or ‘the shit’? — as of April 7…

Whatever way anyone chooses to read into the titling of THE SH*T SYNTH as the latest entry into The Crow Hill’s ongoing ORIGINS series of sample-based virtual instrument plug-ins, one thing is for sure: it readily represents a broad selection of three categories of 16 workhorse instruments each, effectively wrapped up into a single plug-in designed to bring a cohesive approach to making music more edgy, lo-fi, retro, and — swimming against the technological tide of so-called progress — decidedly AI (Artificial Intelligence) slop-free. From pianos to strings, plucks, beeps, bass, and pads, the compendium that is THE SH*T SYNTH has been lovingly sculpted by the Edinburgh-based enterprise’s media composer and ‘samplist-in-residence’ Christian Henson to take the hassle out of making existing sounds less refined, catering to those looking for an entirely new bank of Mellotron-style sounds as well as synths that have been long forgotten — for good reason, too!

Komodo by Krakli - Free Semi Modular Synthesiser Demo

video upload by steve webb

"32Bit only https://plugins4free.com/plugin/2943/"

"Komodo is a semi-modular synthesizer.

It has a vast range of self contained synth engines, Virtual Analog, Physical modelling, FM, and Bell tones (Ring mod) all routable via filters, Vector controllers, and a variety of envelopes and LFOs then on to multiple effects stages.

Each sound engine can furthermore be controlled by a combination of Keyboard, Sequencers or Arpeggiators.

Things can get crazy very quickly. Its also a very large GUI so some may struggle to fit it onto their screens. Komodo has historically not been that popular as it is a dificult beast to tame but persevere and you will be rewarded."

RetroSound Studio Tour: Vintage Digital Synthesizers

video upload by RetroSound

"RetroSound Studio Tour:
Legendary Vintage Digital & Hybrid Synthesizers of the 80s and early 90s

In this episode of RetroSound Studio, I explore classic digital synthesizers that revolutionized electronic music production during the 80s and early 90s. From FM synthesis and wavetable synthesis to vector synthesis, PD synthesis, vitual analog and Roland’s LA synthesis, these instruments introduced a new generation of sound design and defined the sonic identity of an era.

The Yamaha DX7 became one of the best-selling synthesizers of all time, defining FM electric pianos and metallic digital textures. The PPG Wave pioneered wavetable synthesis, laying the foundation for modern digital sound engines. The Sequential Prophet VS introduced vector synthesis, allowing dynamic blending between digital waveforms. The Roland D-50 shaped late-80s pop and film scoring with its LA synthesis architecture, while the Roland JD-800 brought hands-on control back to digital synthesis in the 1990s.

These digital synthesizers shaped genres such as synth-pop, new wave, ambient, house, techno, trance, and film music. Today, they remain highly sought after by producers, collectors, and sound designers researching vintage digital synthesizers, 80s keyboard sounds, virtual analog, classic FM synthesis, and wavetable history."
