"ATARI PUNK CONSOLE DELUXE V2.0
with 2 Movement / Light Sensors, 6 Body Contacts,
Special Diode Circuit, Stutter Switch & CV INPUT !

LAST BATCH EVER!
(3 left till they are all gone!)

"DESCRIPTION: All great things must come to an end. This is 1 of the last 3 Dr. Blankenstein APC's that will ever be made... period. Last batch, it's time to move on to other wonderful projects. After 3 Years, 300 pieces (one of which went to the great Forrest Mims himself)... what else can really be done? :)
If you don't know, you are looking at a Dr. Blankenstein's Limited Edition Atari Punk Console Deluxe v2.0. Pretty much a super Atari stylized APC with a TON of tricked out features. There are two photo Theremin style motion / light sensors to control the sound, as well as a control switches to use a classic APC knob setup. Each light sensor can be turned on and off independently.

To add even more weird control to this sucker I have added SIX BODY contacts that allow for some pretty cool sound manipulation (see video below). Two of the body contacts are running through a specially designed Diode circuit that you will ONLY find on Dr. Blankenstein's APC Deluxe V2.0.

There is also a 1/8" Control Voltage (C.V.) Input so that it can be sequenced with an analog sequencer / modular synth setup or even modulate the sound by connecting a piezo trigger to it... fun stuff! :)

Another exciting addition to version v2 is the On / Off Momentary switch on the top of the piece, this allows the player to rhythmically stutter in the sound in! Of course there is still the standard On / Off power switch by the Atari logo as well. The side knob controls the master volume, and their is a 1/4" output jack on the back of the unit.

All in all... this is one of the nicest built, most feature stocked, MOST PLAYABLE VERSION OF THE ATARI PUNK CONSOLE out there today. But don't take my word for it... take a look at the demo video below. Point is, this is NOT your grandmothers APC! :)

FEATURES:

- 1 OF THE LAST 3 EVER MADE!
- 2 Motion / Light Sensitive Theremin like top mounted sensors
- 2 Light sensor On / Off Switches
- 2 Square Wave Synth Control Knobs
- Momentary Stutter ON/OFF switch
- Standard ON/OFF switch
- Cool Color Changing / Randomly changing how it flashes mounted power LED
- 1/8" Control Voltage Sequencer / Piezo Input

- 1/4" Mono Output Jack
- Volume Control knob
- 9V Battery Powered

RIP Stanley Lunetta

Stanley Lunetta passed away on March 3 this year.  The first I heard of it was via Chuck Stephens in the comments on Ray Wilson passing away, posted yesterday. Lunetta was known for his Lunetta CMOS synth used in a number of synth DIY projects. You can find a collection of his work featured here on MATRIXSYNTH.

On his passing via The Sacramento Bee:

"Percussionist, composer, sculptor and much-loved icon of the local music community Stanley Lunetta relentlessly explored avant garde music while maintaining a legendary career. He died March 3 from brain cancer in Sacramento.

Lunetta played drums for Music Circus, missing only two weeks of performances until his retirement in 2008 after 54 years. He also served as the music contractor who assembled orchestras for Music Circus from 1973 until his retirement. He also was the principal timpanist for the Sacramento Symphony Orchestra, Sacramento Philharmonic Orchestra, Sacramento Opera and Sacramento Choral Society and was an instructor of timpani and percussion at UC Davis and Chico State."

On Lunettas via MsModular:

"The Lunetta is an electronic instrument that uses primarily CMOS chips for gates, Boolean logic, and mathematical functions for sequenced sounds. A Lunetta is basically a simple rhythmic modular musical computer that makes abstract sounds in sometimes unpredictable ways. It is a beautiful experimental synthesizer.

Lunettas are most typically DIY instruments, although there are a few small boutique manufacturers that sell them. ElectroLobotomy for example sells a few simple Lunetta synthesizers on Etsy.

The most beautiful part of a Lunetta is that one can make one for themselves and experiment with its functionality and layout. The guide for making a Lunetta can be found here: Intro to Lunetta CMOS Synths. The introduction goes into Stanley Lunetta’s concept, and provides an introductory guide for making them. Every Lunetta though is made a bit differently, as they often reflect the makers preferences."

The image above is via electro-music.com. Stanley Lunetta's work was frequently discussed on the electro-music.com forums. I highly recommend doing a search on Lunetta there.

Updates via Chuck Stephens in the comments:

"Thanks for posting this. Stanley and Ray were huge! Their work showed me the direction to take when I started learning to build circuits. My lunetta synth has influences from both men, as well as Eric Archer, Forrest Mimms, Reed Ghazala, etc.- we stand on the shoulders of giants!

BTW- My lunetta cost less than $100 and has 36 modules (so far!). It's built into an old rifle case I found in a dumpster and the panels are cut from 4" square PVC fence posts from Home Depot. Steel nuts and bolts and alligator clip test leads handle patching duties. Save more- work less!"

Here's a noise piece from my lunetta synth:

Buster-Jangle by nepchune from chuck stephens on Vimeo.

"This is my Lunetta noise synth run through a Ross Time Machine digital delay. I love the sounds this thing makes. The video features Honey Boy the Cat doing what he does."

And here's a song from the same rig:

Confidence is High by nepchune from chuck stephens on Vimeo.

"This is 90-95% Lunetta with a tiny dab of Kaossilator and Korg R3 (the explosion sounds and the 'pip' on the fast part) and an Arduino based 'auduino' granular synth for the lead (say what you want about Arduino- this little granular synth sounds great and provides a nice 'live' element). The Lunetta part forms the basis of the song and it is completely unedited- this is how it came out of my machine. I used two of Eric Archer's Mini Space Rockers for the percussion sounds and they are completely Lunetta controlled. The drum sounds are routed through a Ross Time Machine digital delay and the spacey bass sound is created by routing my lunetta-integrated Atari Punk Console through a Korg Pandora guitar processor. The other 7 Lunetta voices are unprocessed. This track is the closest I've come to integrating my interest in generative music and my skills for arrangement and song writing. I set out to create a traditional song structure and sound and I'm really pleased with it. It shoes that a Lunetta isn't just a noise machine- although I love noise, too. I love what my Lunetta makes possible. Lightning in a bottle!"

Circuit Classics - Bringing Forrest Mims Vintage Designs to Life

Circuit Classics from Crowd Supply on Vimeo.

Circuit Classics is a project currently seeking funding on Crowd Supply.  The goal is to bring a number of Forrest Mims' early DIY projects to life as prefabbed circuit boards.  What's particularly interesting is that the original descriptions and illustrations will be etched onto the circuit boards.  They will also come with stands as you can see in the video above, effectively making them pieces of art in tribute to the original designs.  And of course, they will also be a great introduction to DIY.

Exquisite printed circuit boards that bring to life Forrest Mims' vintage designs from "Getting Started in Electronics.

Forrest M. Mims III is a trusted name in the electronics world for good reason: his charming and engaging texts have drawn millions of people into the world of electronics for the first time. I am bringing some of those hand-drawn circuits projects to life by creating an exquisitely designed series of finely crafted and highly detailed boards. These are the Circuit Classics. They make a great gift for a first-time learner, an expert tinkerer, or even just as a fun conversation piece for your desk.

This initial release includes three of Forrest’s circuit designs in kit form: the Dual-LED Flasher, the Stepped Tone Generator, and the Bargraph Voltage Indicator. Each kit includes:

Printed Circuit Board (PCB): Includes the circuit itself, the circuit’s schematic, and a description of the circuit, all in Forrest’s iconic hand-drawn style, traced directly from his books. (Prototypes are OSHPark purple, but the final production run will be blue.)
Through-hole Components: All the components you need to build a working circuit. Easy to place and solder on the PCB thanks to clear footprints and large, friendly solder pads.
Display Stand: made of high-quality blond ash wood, each stand is crafted to let you proudly display your work."

On the Stepped Tone Generator:

"This circuit gained a life of its own, jumping from the pages of the 555 Timer IC Circuits Engineer’s Mini-Notebook and out into the world as the storied Atari Punk Console. Well-known for enabling the creation of sounds just like classic Atari console games from the 1980s, it provides a fun audio-centric project, as well as an interesting introduction to digital circuitry, feedback, and oscillators."

X1L3 - Vevoyah + Elektron Analog 4 - Drum mutilation

Published on Mar 25, 2016 manufacturedZ3R0 .

"Vevoyah - drone/pe/hnw/abstract synth/resonant filter/delay........

Hand built noise synth built around an atari punk console. with cv in to the filter cutoff, an external audio input and midi control of the oscillator over 12 notes.

Analog 4 drum sequence at the external input. Filter cutoff is being sequenced by the A4's CV out. The input is preamped and super hot so can be abused with line level instruments for some good distortion. Blending in the oscillator to this over driven input produces some nice toned grunge and pseudo ringmod effects, especially when the filter resonance is in self oscillation. A midi sequence is set running about midway through which animates this strange effect and underpins the drums with an unhinged arpeggio."

oneUP! Atari TIA Custom Chiptune Midi Synt

Published on Jan 4, 2016 manosmodularsystems

"This video is just an audio demo of oneUP!, which is an Atari TIA midi synth. This is a single track, from a single oneUP!, recorded in a single take, with just a bit of reverb. OneUP! is a midi-controlled Atari TIA IC (CO10444D, this time). This demo is very limited; the device is capable of much more. The device is based off of Brian Peter's chip synth under the MIT license."

Update via Chocolatchips in the comments: "These are still available at chocolatchips.com , in the Etsy shop. The boards are redesigned and they're in a new enclosure style. Other midi boxes are available there, too."

via this auction

Cool retro style case.

Note this is not an Atari Punk Console (APC).

"This is a midi-controlled TIA audio IC from an Atari 2600 and various classic arcades of the late 70’s and early 80’s. It's housed in a road-worthy extruded aluminum enclosure; you could probably jump up and down on this device and it would continue working just fine (but please don't do that). This is the sixth unit made in a short run. Unit #5 sold on Etsy for $125. The TIA IC installed in this unit is new-old stock, meaning that it wasn’t pulled from a used game system; it was warehoused and the first time it made sound was when I tested it here. The video linked on this page contains a short audio demo. This instrument can do allot more, but the demo should whet your appetite. The oneUP! midi synth connects to your usb-capable midi controller or DAW by a common mini USB to USB A cable. The audio out is by eighth inch jack.

When connected to my Windows PC, my DAW recognizes oneUP! immediately. The device is small enough to fit in the palm of your hand or your pocket. This is only the sixth one built and so the work was very much ‘by hand’. This unit features a newer PCB revision and tighter design than the first. The build is solid and durable. The audio output is nice, loud and clear.

The design is based off of Brian Peter’s TIA chip synth under the MIT license. Besides the provided demo, it’s capable of everything in Brian’s demo, too. This unit includes a CO10444D “Atari TIA” audio IC. This unit features a socketed Atari TIA IC, that can be removed and replaced if needed. After the first twenty units, I will most likely be out of TIAs."

Synthrotek Atari Junk

Published on Feb 6, 2016 ISOTROPOSPHERE

http://synthrotek.com

"This is a kit from Synthrotek entitled Atari Junk, it is quite a bit more than a Atari Punk console one might be familiar with.

A great starter kit for DIYers which offers up a wide range of sounds available from a primary oscillator and two modulating oscillators. Three tone colors available for the primary oscillator, external modulating oscillator input and control voltage input for the main oscillator.

I mounted my little kit inside an electronics tin and gave it a custom paint scheme. A nice cheap little kit that offers up many of the famous Atari sounds and more.

Get yours today from Synthrotek and happy building..

Enjoy!!!"

Dr Blankenstein builds Atari Punk Consoles (3 Year Anniversary Video!)

Dr Blankenstein (Drew Blanke) builds his Atari Punk Consoles (3 Year Anniversary Video!)

I can not tell you how excited I am to finally put this video up, or should I say... A video like this (a fast motion build video). I am equally excited that today (meaning 12/13/2015 at the time of this video) is the 3RD YEAR ANNIVERSARY of my version of the ATARI PUNK CONSOLE! Here is the original video if you haven't seen it: https://youtu.be/v-VsaC33edU Since uploading that video I have sold HUNDREDS of units to countless talented musicians and art collectors from all over the globe. This video is a kinda thank to all those people, giving you a FAST GLIMPSE of all the work that went into your little video game sounding drone synth. When people say "hand made synth"... they usually don't get much more hand made than what you see here. I am excited to share that experience with all of you. I really do hope you enjoy.

So how the video goes is... I was building a batch of 6 APC 2600's when a ton of holiday order rolled in at once. So, I needed to start to finish a few of them off one by one. So, I only really finish ONE Atari Punk Console... BUT, you are really watching me prepare a batch of six of them. Sorry about all the weird lighting and camera angles, I still haven't gotten the perfect camera for these sorts of shoots and my space is limited for lighting and tripods... so it is what it is. :)

I obviously was shooting for a video in the style of the great TIM SWAY: https://www.youtube.com/user/timsway or say the amazing Jimmy Diresta: https://www.youtube.com/user/jimmydir... (sorry for goofing on your name btw, I was totally just playing dumb:).

Well I guess that's it for now... here's to another year of making crazy sounds together. Thanks for all who have grabbed an APC 2600 from me over the years, and for those of you who haven't... well... I hope to speak to you soon. Be well, have a happy and healthy holiday season.

If you enjoyed this video... please pass it on. If you want to see more like it... please SUBSCRIBE NOW :) Thanks again!

June Solstice 2015 Live Streaming Improv & the Bit Beast Synthesizer

Published on Jun 21, 2015 Jacob Watters

"This is a live improv that I did for the June Solstice 2015 event on radio.electro-music.com. I didn't have anything set up at my new place, so I put some synths on top of boxes and sat on a cushion on the floor. I was supposed to end after 30 minutes, but the next performer wasn't ready to go. So there is an extra bit of droning at the end."

Roland Airas, Novation BassStation II & DIY kit.

Update: via Jacob Watters on the DIY kit: "That is something I made myself and was playing on have manufactured, but I never ended up getting it done. It is basically a large MIDI controlled Lunetta CMOS synth (like an Atari Punk Console). I used it for the drone sound in this video. You can watch a better demo here:"

Bit Beast Synthesizer

Published on Feb 2, 2013

"The Bit Beast is not currently in production. The Bit Beast uses the same chip as an Arduino to generate notes that are then chopped up and filtered by CMOS circuitry. The sound then passes through two analog voltage controlled filters. Both filters are unique designs that offer very different sounds. Filter 1 is a 12db state variable filter with low-pass and band-pass modes and overdrive control. Filter 2 is a 6db filter with low-pass and high-pass modes and a squelchy distorted resonance. The filters can be configured in parallel or two different serial configurations. Both filters have their own LFO and envelope generator."
