Modular Synth and Guitar Crossover

Published on Sep 13, 2016 FatSynthDude

"For some reason you don't see much talk about doing stuff like this. For this demonstration, I'm running a guitar through various modules on my Eurorack system before sending it to the amp. In all cases, the guitar is a Schecter Avenger 7, the amp is a Schecter Hellraiser Stage 100, the mic is an SM57, and the preamp is an Eleven Rack. For most of these sounds, the clean channel was used. No post-processing effects were used. The order of the modules being used is as followed (also see corresponding picture.)

1. 0:00 Flame FX-16 (Autowah)
2. 0:19 Flame FX-16 (Bitcrusher)
3. 0:52 Audio Damage Aeverb
4. 1:20 Analogue Solutions SY02
5. 1:39 Doepfer A-136 Distortion/Waveshaper
6. 1:55 EMW Fixed Filter Bank
7. 2:35 A-125 Phase Shifter (Modulated by WMD DPO)
8. 3:27 Synthrotek Echo
9. 4:22 Dave Smith DSM-02 Character (5:42, drive turned up to max. Kinda of has a Tube Screamer-esque quality here.)
10. 6:03 Synthrotek 308 (Rat Clone) (6:43, Lead Channel engaged and a bad cover of 'Where the Slime Live" is played)
11. 6:58 Doepfer A-105 SSM Filter (Modulated by WMD DPO)
12. 8:36 Mutable Warps
13. 9:18 OSC303 (being CV modulated by the guitar, oddly enough)
14. 10:16 Mutable Elements
15. 10:58 Mutable Clouds
16. 12:12 Uoki-Toki Polivoks Filter (Modulated by WMD DPO. Uoki-Toki has super cheap Polivoks clone filters available on Muff Wiggler and I can't recommend them enough.)
17. 13:16 Trouby Tube Fuzz (Can't believe I've actually found something usable for this module! Sounds terrible on synths, but great as a guitar front end.)
18. 13:41 Music Thing Radio Music
19. 13:57 Waldorf NW1 (Wave 80 is my new god)
20. 14:30 Pittsburgh Modular Verbtronic (love how it has such a spring reverb character to it)
21. 15:30 Dwarfcraft Hax
22. 16:18 Flame Talking Synth
23. 16:50 Soundmachines UL1 Looper (very lofi quality even at highest quality)
24. 17:31 4ms Atoner
25. 18:42 Synthrotek APC (Modulated by WMD DPO)"

Overcast Minilogue Ambience (with Clouds)

Published on Dec 30, 2016 Nick Jackson

"Today I figured it was time for my Minilogue and Mutable modules to mingle once again.

The Minilogue is being sequenced by it's own internal sequencer - just a simple repeating chord pattern. I've found that the Mini's sequencer is very flawed and quirky, but sometimes that can lead to some very nice results. It seems to mess up the chords that I program into it, sometimes removing notes or even adding extra notes an octave up. It's almost like it gets confused as to what octave to play when it has to think fast. So that's what happened here, and I really liked to way it ended up sounding.

Mini then goes out to Mutable Instruments Ripples and then into Clouds, which is having its' Freeze, Density, Size, and Texture modulated by a Uoki Toki 4LFO. The slow modulations add subtle changing characteristics to the sound and keeps things interesting. I think I need some more LFO's..

The mix comes out of Clouds and into a Strymon BlueSky for some shimmer reverb. I like to use the BlueSky with the reverb time almost all the way up, which really adds this lush ambient wash underneath everything, almost like a droning pad.

It sounded so nice I decided to just leave it alone for a bit, but around the 4-minute mark I begin to tweak the patch a bit. I started playing with the Mini's built in delay feedback, and tweaking the Density of Clouds a bit. I quickly realized that this could get out of hand fast so instead I moved over to the BlueSky and began very slowly cranking up the reverb mix. I really like doing this, as it almost 'disintegrates' the piece into this big washy reverby mess. I like big washy reverby messes.

Around the 12 minute mark my camera stopped recording like it pretty much always does, but I decided to keep the audio rolling like I pretty much always do. One day I'll upload a real nice professional quality video with no technical difficulties, but today is just simply not that day.

As always, I hope you can sit and enjoy these sounds for a little bit. Thank you very much for taking the time to listen."

Update:

Overcast Minilogue Ambience #2

Published on Dec 30, 2016

"Another riff I stumbled upon while playing with the Minilogue today.

This is the same exact setup as my video from earlier today..Minilogue, sequenced by it's own sequencer, into Ripples, into Clouds, with a Uoki Toki 4LFO modulating the Freeze, Density, Texture, and Size of Clouds, then into a Strymon BlueSky for some shimmer reverb.

As always, thanks for watching, hope you enjoy!"

Rosendelle - Eurorack Modular Ambient

Published on Oct 6, 2017 Björn Bommersheim

"Onetake recording of an eurorack modular patch done with the Intention of reduction. I used my subrack for this patch only. Somehow it makes me feel free to get rid of all the countless possibilities in my main rack. I know this is what people call big-time whinging.

The patch really comes to life with the Uoki Toki Dual Polivoks VCF fitted between rings and clouds and the shimmer verb of Strymon's Blue Sky. I love to get lost in it!

Used Modules:

Befaco Midi Thing

Mutable Instruments Peak
Mutable Instruments Rings
Mutable Instruments Clouds

DbMinor | Eurorack Ambient

Published on Jan 8, 2017 Björn Bommersheim

"The patch is based around the idea to go for chords and the use of the music thing radio (in my 'case' the klangbauköln version) as a yet simple sample/chord player. So i rendered four different 10min DbMinor chords (basically the chord plus three inversions) with ni absynth. For changing the samples/chords i used make noise pressure points which is quite fun and an useful approach.

The interesting stereo filter effect by the middle of the recording is the Mutable Instruments Rings into the Uoki Toki Dual Polivocs filter which somehow blew me away ...

Feel free to leave your thoughts or comments.

Here are some patch notes / modules i used:

Shimmer

Published on Dec 17, 2016 Nick Jackson

"Another loose jam with my very small system, using the Qu-Bit Chord as the sound source and processing with Clouds.

Chord is being sequenced by an SQ-1, going through Ripples and into Clouds. A Uoki Toki 4LFO is being used to modulate the voicing and inversion of the Chord, as well as the Freeze and Density of Clouds. A MI Tides is also being used to modulate the Texture of Clouds. The mix then runs out through a ZVex Lo-fi Junky (guitar pedal version), Strymon El Capistan, and a Strymon BlueSky on the Shimmer setting. A limiter was then lightly added in the DAW to control the peaks.

As the video progresses I use Clouds to slowly deteriorate the loop into a washy unintelligible mess. The camera gave out when my SD card became full, but I included the entirety of the audio anyway.

As always, thank you so much for watching/listening!"

Noise Reap Bermuda Eurorack VCO Demo

Published on Dec 23, 2016 FatSynthDude

"I made this one with the focus being on the pair of Noise Reap Bermuda's I received today. These are fairly simple triangle-core oscillators with triangle, sine, and pulse wave outputs. What makes them different from other VCO's is that there's a control onboard to route the triangle wave back into the core. It's a simple trick that a lot of oscillators can do already with some self-patching, but it's neat that it's a built-in modulation here with a built-in attenuator. For those that have never tried feeding an oscillator back into itself, this results in distortions in the waveform. It's a trick that a lot of people forget exists, so it's handy to have a dedicated knob for it. The other special feature is the price. These are only $65 each. In my brief experience with them so far, they're fairly stable and track CV very well. I haven't done a side-by-side comparison to my other oscillators yet, but it will be interesting to see how they compete against the more expensive ones. Regardless of how well they compare, I'd say they're worth the phenomenally low price.

So for this composition, the Bermudas handle the bass synth and the lead synth. The Bassier one is ran through the 4075 and the lead goes through the Polivoks filter.

x0x-heart Demo - Eurorack Modular Experiment

Published on Feb 24, 2017 FatSynthDude

"Putting the x0x-heart through its paces with some ASSEEEED!!! The x0x-heart's signal chain is straight to the mixer with a bit of reverb from the FX-16. Sequenced by the Stillson Hammer mkII.

I haven't ever owned a real TB-303, but compared to other clones I've owned (FB-383, TBX-303, Rebirth) it's pretty good. I like the built-in overdrive circuit. It's like an all-in-one 303 acid machine.

Spraung

Published on Aug 18, 2018 Miles Briand

"Experimenting with the Ornaments and Crime Harrington 1200 triad chord generator mode on Braids and 2 DPO dissimilar oscillator waveforms. Lots of trigs and CVs for O_C coming out at a 1/8 tempo Voltage block and Pamelas NEW Workout. The mixed down oscillators are going going into Belgrad which is cutoff gated by Pams workout, into my main mixer and clouds. JIAW JIAW guitar sound is rings into Uoki-Toki polivoks filter clone at high resonance, with filter cutoff being triggered by Pams workout gates into Maths envelope, into erica synths tube mixer at max saturation. Also drums from Tiptop audio ONE, 4MS STS and Intellijel Plonk being controlled by Qubit Rhythm. Qubit mixology with send return going into Clouds at final stage."

Chord Cloud

Published on Dec 13, 2016 Nick Jackson

"I made pretty good use of the last 4hp in my HEK with a Uoki Toki Quad LFO. 4 LFO's in 4hp! In this patch I decided to put it to use with the Chord and Clouds.

It's a pretty simple patch..Chord is just droning through Ripples and then into Clouds. I am using the 4lfo to modulate the waveshape, voicing, and inversion of the Chord, with the 4th lfo cyclically 'freezing' Clouds. I then have a MI Tides slowly modulating the density of Clouds. The mix then runs out through a Strymon BlueSky, with no additional effects.

As always, I hope you enjoy and thanks for watching!"

Ladik D-333 sample player + 3x L-111 LFO

Published on Feb 3, 2016 RuprechtM

"Some modulation possibilities, bank 040 Clicks2 - Uoki-toki´s set used - compare video with raw sounds without modulations http://ladik.ladik.eu/?page_id=1191
Yellow patch cable is trigger from most left LFO, red and orange are modulations from another LFOs on right side.
Top switch is connected to jumper 1 (shortening samples)
Second switch is from jumper 2 (bitcrushing)
Third switch is from jumper 3 (modulations while playing)
One most right A-310 headphone amp is used for my headhones :)
Second A-310 is used for feeding sound directly to camera with level setting (and easiest way for me to convert mono signal to stereo jack...)"
