"This is the first video in a new series exploring the University of Iowa’s Electronic Music Studio. In addition to presenting its historic instruments (including a 1968 Moog IIIP with custom-made modules), and the famous musicians who have used them, these videos will extrapolate ideas to use in your own modular systems. This episode examines a unique random sequencer that was developed in 1974 by Paul Dingman, an electrical engineering student at Iowa. It then shows how it might be recreated using the third lane ('time') on Make Noise’s 0-Ctrl. NOTE: several other Eurorack sequencers also have this feature, as indeed does the Moog’s own 960 sequential controller; alternatively, use an LFO to clock any sequencer and patch the sequencer’s second lane/channel (if it has one) back into that LFO’s frequency input.

PATCH NOTES:

The patch starts with the M8 sending a MIDI sequence to the 1983 to drive two voices. The first routes CV/trigger to Pizza’s V/Oct and Sync inputs, with the CTRL knob set to the internal envelope. The second voice sequences the bassline via the Michigan Synthworks MSW810 CV/GATE inputs.
Neo Trinity handles LFO duties: LFO A/B channels (smoothed random) morph Pizza’s oscillator shape and tweak Cinnamon’s filter cutoff via Aikido, while LFO D/E channels control Basil’s Blur and Speed. Pizza’s main and octave outputs mix through Aikido (Channels C/D) before feeding into Cinnamon’s high-pass filter, which is FM-modulated by LFO B. /možná Neo Trinity's LFO B pro jasnost?/
Basil processes the filtered signal with a synced ping-pong delay, with its Blur and Speed tweaked live alongside Neo Trinity’s LFOs.
Aikido’s VCAs allow for muting and fading of Pizza’s waveforms and modulation depth on the fly, while Bestie outputs the final stereo mix."

Landscape Noon 1 Year Review

"It's been a little over a year of using the Landscape Fm Noon so I figured I would do a review video. There ends up being not that much reviewing done. I just show how I've been using it lately. It's very hard to remember what does what on this thing. Overall I rate the Noon at like a 1/10 or 8/10 depending on what type of synthesist you are. If the parameters for each channel were able to be CV controlled I would rate it a 9/10. It's very fun but challenging and frustrating at times. I view it as equal parts puzzle, game, and instrument. The passive nature of the machine means that you either need to use a lot of mixer/audio interface channels for the separate outs or deal with the signal robbing and channel bleed that comes with the passive mixing to main outs on the unit. As for the price of the unit I think it's somewhat overpriced as you end up needing a lot of other gear to fully use the thing. You can use it with just a 9V battery or basic CV sequencer but it really shines when used with a considerable amount of other equipment. I wouldn't recommend this to synth beginners or people who are sensitive to abrasive sounds but someone with an open mind for electronic experimentation might find it very fulfilling. Minimalism for Modular #5: Hans Otte's Book of Sounds

"An introduction to the ethereal music of Hans Otte, via a modular interpretation of two parts (2 and 7) from his Book of Sounds (1979-82).

Also contains several ideas for generative/aleatory sequencing in a modular system: in particular, decoupling pitch and gate, combining a multi-channel sample player (Disting EX) with a sequencer that has per-step gate outputs (0-Ctrl), and using a series of probabilistic gates (Missed Opportunities) to distribute/alternate pitch variations.

"As is known, the two Roland grooveboxes do not officially support MIDI SysEX messages and there is no documentation relating to their implementation which is hidden

In reality, the MC-101/707 are able to receive and send such messages: they respond with a completely wrong addressing, with duplicate and incorrect data which however can be corrected and used by the software.

The editor-librarian, like the analogous versions for Fantom/0, AX-Edge and Jupiter-X/Xm, communicates in real-time and bidirectionally with the groovebox, using MIDI SysEx messages."

The PrssPnt music synthesizer module is a controller in which several signals are generated by touching the printed copper wire at the bottom of the instrument. Touching PrssPnt, you become part of the circuit, generating a total of four simultaneous signals (two CV, two Gate).

The basic function of PrssPnt will be familiar to anyone who has used Pressure Points or 0-CTRL. It could be seen as a single “souped-up” channel of one of these devices. Since it is a single channel, the tuned voltage outputs are not relevant, and instead are replaced with more playable sensitivity controls and alternate pressure and gate outputs.

• Momentary Gate output remains high as long as it is being pressed
• Toggled Gate output goes high and low with each successive press of the plate: press it to make it go high, press it again to make it go low
• Pressure output generates a positive control signal proportional to the amount of Pressure applied, further tailored by the Sensitivity Panel Control
• Smooth Touch Function recreates the useful patch of sending a Pressure Output through a carefully tuned slew limiter for extended function generation
• Turning up the Slew amount will allow for larger than life functions with very long decay to be generated by hand.

This could have been way shorter because it’s not happening much here but I got carried away 😌 adding the Meris Mercury X to the Strega can definitely bring some very nice results… i just have some difficulty taming the Strega itself and think i want an 0-ctrl for it but not sure to keep this or go for a Lyra-8 perhaps."
