Celestine for iPad: My real‑time granular device is now an AUv3

"Celestine is a real-time granular AUv3 audio effect for the iPad. It's always listening and always spitting out grains. If you've been following my channel for some time, you'll know that Celestine started out as a Max4Live device... my most successful one to date. Many people have asked for it to be ported to other platforms and this marks the beginning of that journey. I've spent the last few months on this. I've also got future plans to release Celestine as a VST3/AU for other desktop DAW users.

Just like the original, this iPad version aims for the immediacy of a pedal and the depth of a granular instrument. There are eight granular modes: classic Grain clouds, Mosaic’s harmonic tiles, Glide’s tape‑like swoops, Reverie’s reverse washes, Bloom’s halos, Tide’s pulsing waves, Stars’ sequenced sparkles and Orbit’s swirling stereo motion. Everything stays tempo‑locked when you want it to in Sync mode, the (now touch-based) visualizer lets you perform playhead and pitch gestures on the fly, and the grain panel offers control over density, size, spray, jitter, reverse probability and more.

To shape the final output, Celestine includes a 'Magic panel' of various multi-FX to sweeten things, a lush reverb and a Dirt section with wavefolding and a bitcrusher. Use Celestine as an insert effect and set the dry/wet to taste or put it fully wet on a send to let fragments of your entire session bloom into shimmering clouds. I’ve found it shines on vocals, guitars, synths and pianos, but percussion can turn into glittering glitches and rhythmic sparkles too. I've also added undo/redo, a full preset system and a constrained randomizer to jump to new ideas quickly.

As I mentioned, I’m planning future releases for VST3/AU on desktop, so this is just the beginning of Celestine’s journey. For now, I hope you enjoy sculpting sounds on the couch, in the bathtub or wherever you like to use your iPad. :)

"Augur v1.5 is by far my biggest update I've ever released to one of my devices. Many of you wrote to me with ideas and I've incorporated almost all of them and I think Augur is truly so much better thanks to all your suggestions.

Included in this free update:
Augur can now self-modulate! This means the modulation section can now modulate the parameters of Augur itself. It feels like a very modular concept to be able to feed the modulations back into the various controls of Augur. I particularly enjoy this with the Speed control.
Longer pattern lengths (up to 32 steps).
Longer (slower) sequencer speeds plus new dotted and triplet speeds.
A new Gravity control makes the generative nature of Augur feel less random and more truly in key. (thanks to ‪@HumanSynthetics‬ for his wisdom on this)
As of Live 12.4 we can finally use the modulation mapping section on the Push without using the computer at all. This is very cool and a huge thanks to ⁨@Ableton⁩ for allowing this to finally happen! My implementation was modeled after the stock LFO device and you can now select any of the 8 mod lanes, map them, adjust them, etc. (You'll need Live 12.4 for this feature to work)"

Live at Home II (Elektron Digitone // MFB Tanzbar // Roland S1 // Teenage Engineering KO Sidekick)

"It's been almost a year since I last used my Elektron Digitone. The knobs had gradually become sticky, making the instrument pretty unpleasant to use. Since this seems to be an issue other people have experienced too (and I've had similar problems with other gear), I eventually decided to buy replacement knobs and swap them myself.

And honestly, this machine is too good to stay on the shelf!

To celebrate its return, here's a second "Live at Home" session: a 14-minute live set built mainly around patterns I recorded on the Digitone before I stopped using it.

The setup:
Elektron Digitone : the heart of the setup, sequencing the Roland S-1 and sending program changes to switch its sounds throughout the set.
Roland S-1 : mainly handling the bass.
MFB Tanzbär : adding some extra analog drums, using its own internal sequencer.
Teenage Engineering KO Sidekick : processing the Tanzbär (Channel 1) and the Digitone (Channel 2), with onboard effects for breaks, transitions, and a bit of hands-on sound shaping.

The Digitone acts as the master clock, with MIDI running from the Digitone to the S-1 and then to the Tanzbär. While the Digitone sequences the S-1, the Tanzbär keeps its own patterns running in sync with the rest of the setup.

No elaborate concept this time, just a chance to revisit some old patterns, bring the Digitone back into the mix, and see where the machines take me.

As always, the performance was recorded in a single take. I mixed and mastered the individual tracks afterwards in Ableton Live, but the musical performance itself wasn't edited or fixed.

Setups for plugins, pedals and synths, plus new software built on Roto-Control's published APIs, all free to download from exchange.melbourneinstruments.com.

MELBOURNE, AUSTRALIA - Melbourne Instruments today launched the Melbourne Exchange, a free library where owners of Roto-Control, the company's motorized MIDI controller, share the setups and software they have built for it.

The Exchange opens with more than 60 entries. Plugin setups include Universal Audio's 1176 and LA-2A collections and the Distressor, plugins from SSL, Brainworx, Maag and Analog Obsession, and Logic Pro's own Compressor. Hardware setups cover pedals from Chase Bliss, Boss, Meris, Hologram, Old Blood Noise and Moog, and synths from Elektron, Moog, Waldorf and Korg. Each setup is a file that imports into Melbourne Instruments' ROTO-SETUP app, with parameter names, colors and detents already in place.

Every entry has its own page credited to the person who made it, with a download count and a clear statement of what it has been checked against: the maker's documentation, a Roto-Control, or the device itself. Owners can also confirm that a setup works with their own gear. Everything hosted on the Exchange is shared under a Creative Commons Attribution (CC BY 4.0) license.

The Exchange also carries software that owners have built on Roto-Control's published APIs, including RotoSeq, a Max for Live sequencer by Alut in which the eight knobs reshape the clock itself, and MAP8, an extended Ableton Live script by Quixotic7.

Both of Roto-Control's APIs, a serial API for configuration and a SysEx API for live two-way control, are published in full, and the source for Melbourne Instruments' own Ableton Live, Bitwig and Logic Pro integrations is on GitHub. The Exchange includes a starter prompt for AI coding assistants such as Claude, Cursor and Copilot that points the assistant at both specifications before it writes any code.

“We're delighted, and honestly a little amazed, by what owners are doing with Roto-Control,” said Jonathan, VP of Marketing at Melbourne Instruments. “People are mapping gear we never expected and building software for it we hadn't imagined. Well, the original Andromeda was 16 voices, but it was also 16 part multi-timbral, so you could either have upto 16 totally different sounds playing at once, or you could also use it to layer different patches to create very thick textures.
In this quick synth wank, I give a little tour of the UI while about 7 different programs are playing across different midi tracks from ableton. No additional fx or processing other than what's coming out of asyx. This is just 1 single instance of the plugin loaded.

"Ambient electronica where an OP-1 field lead floats over soft harmonies.

Today marks the 1000th consecutive day of posting Daily Sound Experiment videos on YouTube. The playlist itself has now reached 1,018 entries.

This piece was created with the Prophet-10, Music Easel, Ambient Engine, and OP-1 field.

The Prophet-10 is processed through the MICROCOSM with reverb and the HAZE effect.

On the Music Easel, a lead is performed using the key. The output is processed through the blueSky with reverb, while an additional filter in Ableton Live is modulated during the performance.

In Ambient Engine, samples including ocean waves and forest sounds are loaded and transformed with the MicroLoop effect to create evolving sound textures.

On the OP-1 field, a lead is performed with the Sampler. A small amount of modulation is added using the built-in CWO effect, followed by reverb from the MOTHER effect.

Lo-Fi Electronica with Granular Piano & Soft Synths | Touch the moon 2026-09-30 by atnr

"An electronica piece where lo-fi piano textures overlap with quiet harmonies.

This piece was created with the OP-1 field, norns shield, volca fm2, and Omnisphere 2.

On the OP-1 field, a phrase is played using the ENDLESS sequencer and processed with reverb through the blueSky.

On the norns shield, a piano performance is recorded into graintopia and played back with granular processing. The output is connected to the Chase Bliss LOST+FOUND for delay and reverb.

The volca fm2 is processed through the Guyatone AE-5 for echo, followed by reverb through the MICROCOSM. The PHRASE LOOPER in the MICROCOSM is also used to capture and repeat phrases.

The remaining parts are built in Ableton Live using Omnisphere 2.

Knock Out 🎚️(Teenage Engineering K.O.-Sidekick EP-136 // MFB Tanzbar // Roland S-1 // J-6)

"A new little piece of gear joins the setup! 🎛️

This time, I'm introducing the Teenage Engineering KO II Sidekick EP-136 , a small but surprisingly powerful little mixer, and a very welcome addition to the setup.

And this one is a little different from my last jams: there's no external sequencers like the Squarp Hapax or Arturia Keystep Pro involved! 😄

Instead, I'm using the built-in sequencers of all 3 instruments in the setup: the MFB Tanzbär , Roland S-1 and *Roland J-6*. It's actually quite refreshing to let the instruments take care of their own sequences for once.

The Tanzbär is on Channel 1 , bringing its punchy analog drums to the party. Channel 2 is shared by the Roland S-1 and *Roland J-6*: the J-6 handles the bass and chords, while the S-1 also provides the lead chimes during the intro.

The problem? The Sidekick only has *2 stereo channels*.

So, naturally, I had to cheat a little. 😄

A hardware jam built around fast drums, broken rhythms and shifting electronic textures.

The Digitakt II drives the drums and sequencing, while the TEO-5 handles the synth parts. The Hologram Microcosm especially the Blocks algorithms keeps cutting, stretching and reshaping the beat, pushing it somewhere between drum & bass, breakbeat and glitchy electronic music.

Not really straight DnB, not really classic breaks either just 168 BPM and the sounds getting slightly out of control.

Recorded live in Ableton Live.
