"A no-talking sound demo of all 24 new factory presets included with Partials & Discrepancies 1.4.0, releasing Friday, September 25, 2026.

Each preset gets a short improvised performance and nothing else, so this is mainly a chance to hear a bit of the range of the synth and the character of the new factory bank.

A lot of the new presets lean toward the more emotional, slightly broken, unstable, cinematic, or textural side of the synth, with movement in the additive oscillator, slot sequencer, discrepancies, modulation, and the newer performance features.

Most examples are played through Geometry Reverb, which is included free with any paid Unusable Engineering plugin purchase.

There is no talking in this video, just the synth, the presets, and the little touch of reverb.

Partials & Discrepancies 1.4.0 will be available on September 25, 2026.

NerDie is an 8-bit noise synthesizer and sequencer. Four oscillators, four LFOs, a summing tree with eight algorithms, a resonant low-pass filter and a one-bar sequencer. The whole engine runs in whole numbers at a fixed chip rate, so the overflow, the wrap and the quantisation you hear are not effects added at the end: they are the signal itself.

It runs as a plugin on Mac and Windows, and as an app on iPad and iPhone. Presets (.ner files) are the same on both, so a patch saved on the iPad opens in the plugin, and the other way round.

Asked about the task of crafting CHILDREN’S CHOIR, The Crow Hill Company co-founder and media composer Christian Henson has his tongue not entirely out of his creative cheek in response, resurrecting the famous showbiz warning usually credited to American comedian W.C. Fields, effectively, by way of opening: “Never work with animals and children! So what’s this going to be like? Getting kids to be slightly demonic, evil, scary… they love it! And they totally seem to get making it so pretty that it’s scary. So we thought we’d try and nurture that spirit in a children’s choir library designed particularly for media composers — people who write for film, TV, and computer games. Why are these guys going to be wanting to use a children’s choir? Maybe there’s something set in a boarding school, maybe there’s something slightly choral and religious, but, more times than not, something unsettling is needed, and that’s where we’ve gone with this one. There are limits to how long children should be asked to perform. So, we thought we’d use the time thoughtfully, curating a selection of singing styles that capture this spirit. As opposed to giving you yet another library with ‘AAs’, ‘EEs’, ‘Ahs’, ‘Ohs’, and ‘MMs’, etcetera, AHOH, OHEH [and many more singing styles are available using the EXPRESSION wheel]. There’s some lovely WAVERING stuff where the pitch centres change. They sound great and scary when you cluster up, but on their own — or just a couple of notes — they have all sorts of childlike menace. There’s terrifying RISES and FALLS. "Thanks to ‪@yukesmusic‬ for creating a new video exploring the rich soundscapes and sound design that Etches has to offer.

Etches Kit is a complete Etches synthesizer that you assemble yourself. The parts snap together. There's no soldering and nothing to source, so all you need is a small Phillips screwdriver and about twenty minutes.

Etches is a layered soundscape synthesizer. It's a palette for playing with sound, sketching melodic sections and building evolving tapestries. It moves between cinematic washes, percussive pizzicatos, and atmospheres worn smooth through ambient processing.

Inspired by live modular techniques, Etches is built upon classic synthesis and tape music traditions. Etches's main engine includes a complex oscillator, a splice recorder and built-in space processing.

We designed Etches to be performed. Every control is on the surface, and every gesture is audible the moment you make it. There are no traditional envelopes or filters here. You shape the timbre as you play.

Pick a root note, choose from eleven scales and modes, and the pads stay locked to that key while you move. It's hard to play a wrong note, which means you can focus on phrasing instead of finger positions.

At the center is a monophonic voice generator and a splice recorder with overdub, so you can layer sounds into something bigger than individual patches. An internal LFO moves against each splice, modulating where the recording starts and ends. It's a behavior we first used in our LAPS and JOTS pedals. Around all of that: a tape-style delay, and a stereo space processor you can get lost in."

"The 20CC TXX-1 Spectron is a Eurorack format dual oscillator inspired by vintage analog multisampling instruments such as the Mellotron, Chamberlin, and Optigan. Spectron uses a unique combination of synthesis and sampling techniques to bring the rich, warbly sounds of these classic instruments into Eurorack for the first time, while also offering new possibilities to manipulate, warp, and mangle them.

Analog multisampled instruments had their hey-day in the 1950's through the 1970's. They used analog recording technology - tape recording in the case of the Mellotron and Chamberlin, and optical sound printing on analog photographic film in the case of the Optigan. Each key corresponded to a recording of a note played on another instrument, often orchestral sounds like strings, woodwinds or choirs, which would play back when the key was pressed. All of Spectron’s sounds are based around full, per-key recordings of vintage multisampled instruments.

Rather than simply triggering discrete samples, Spectron organizes many samples to create the illusion of a continuous voltage-controlled oscillator. As pitch changes, playback seamlessly transitions between recordings, preserving the character of each original tape while allowing smooth, continuous frequency control.

There are two assignable timbre shaping sections not normally found on sample-based instruments: FM and Sync. These are tuned to range from subtle modulations that recontextualize familiar sounds, through radical transformations that are barely recognizable, and all the way to harsh and clangorous, with continuous CV control of all points between."

AE Machine | Architecture For Drums That Never Repeat & Oxide Virtual Tape Processor

"One practical note: listen to this on monitors or proper headphones. Most of what the machine does lives in the low end and in the stereo field, and laptop speakers will simply delete it. Loud is not necessary, full range is."

In short, AE Machine (estimated release date of October 2) consists of:

"Eleven synthesis voices built from scratch at sample level, five samplers, two free-running pads. A sequencer where a 16 × 16 Markov matrix decides which step may follow which, a note sieve that re-orchestrates the pattern when you transpose it, a chaotic modulation matrix reaching 271 parameters, morphing between any two presets, and a stem recorder that writes twenty-six files in one press. It runs in Max/MSP 9 on macOS and Windows, and playing it requires no paid Max license: an unlicensed copy of Max opens and runs the machine in full.

This is not commercial software in the ordinary sense. It is my working method, the environment I built night after night for my own music, packaged so that you can play it. When you get it, you are getting research: the reading, the listening, the failed versions, the decisions. The manual is a hundred pages and it is already here, whole, free to read. Trust your ears over any paragraph in it."

I like how simple combinations of hardware can create a quiet atmosphere without needing too much.

"I want to introduce Phaseburn One, a synthesizer we have been working on for several years, which is now in open beta and free for everyone until 15 October.

The sound is built on a phase-locked loop. One oscillator listens to another and keeps trying to match it, and the interesting part starts where it fails. When it tracks accurately the tone comes out clear and strangely alive, and when the loop is loosened you hear the chase itself: the oscillator catches up with the target, overshoots, breaks off, finds the frequency again, sometimes clinging to a harmonic instead of the note you played. PLLs are not new, they have appeared before as modules and effects, but as far as we can tell nobody has built a whole instrument around one. Four macro dials open the loop by ear, so none of the theory is needed to land somewhere usable.

Three more oscillators sit beside it: Morph, which sweeps between waveform families, a Vector shaping oscillator and a Sub. A transient module can add a click, noise or a metallic edge, or build a kick out of a sine. Around the loop there is a modular patchbay where you draw the cables yourself, a rack of seven effects and a mixer, and almost everything can be modulated from a dedicated section of LFOs and modulation sequencers.

Frap Tools Magnolia: From Lush Poly to Nasty Mono

"The Frap Tools Magnolia is an 8 voice analog polysynth with through zero FM, wavefolding and poly aftertouch — and it goes from lush Jupiter pads to full MS-20 scream in about two moves. Full review and demo.

I've never played a polysynth that turns into a monosynth this easily. Magnolia is what happens when Frap Tools take the Brenso oscillator and the Cunsa filter out of their Eurorack range, put them in a very sexy box with a poly aftertouch keyboard, 64 modulation slots and no menus at all — then add a load of things nobody else is doing.

Sync that flips the waveform instead of resetting it. FM smoothing, which I don't think I've seen on a poly before. A resonant high pass filter that squeals into MS-20 territory. Filter FM from either oscillator or the noise. And Poly Move, which throws a random value at every note you press so the whole thing breathes like a modular.

I've had a review unit here for a few weeks and it's going back this week, which is a genuine shame. In this video I go through every section, show how you interact with 64 modulation slots without a screen or a modulation matrix, and build a patch from one plain triangle wave into something enormous. There are two demo tracks in there too — it inspired me to write a track, which doesn't happen with everything that comes through the door.

Polysynthi Loops

"Here's a happy/sad tune on the ultra rare and quite exquisite EMS Polysynthi. Maybe only about 30 of these synthesisers were ever made, and probably just a handful are left in the wild. It came out in 1978 to rave reviews (https://www.muzines.co.uk/articles/em...) but then disappeared in spectacular fashion when other polysynths came to market around the same time (Prophet 5, Korg PS3100, Yamaha CS80, Polymoog, Roland Jupiter 4), most of which had huge corporate advertising budgets behind them. But the EMS had a number of unique things going for it, such as 49 note polyphony (albeit sharing one filter / VCA -- it is essentially paraphonic, like the Polymoog), 2 LFOs with a clever routing system, pressure sensitive keyboard, and a voltage controlled analogue delay section. But above all, it has a totally "of-its-time" sound like no other synth I know - it creates instant late-70s happy/sad tones like nothing else in my studio. And the other thing - JUST LOOK AT IT

This is a live performance using the Polysynthi and the Concrete Box (stereo loopers) to layer up multiple passes of melodies

"Up for sale is my favorite Roland synth of the 70s era. It has all the raw tone of the System 100 with way more features and quite a stunning look. Check out the attached video of a quick demo of this actual SH5. It all works great and sounds great. Hard to find one fully functional and looking this good.. heck, hard to find at all. I found using this with ease and nothing that hindered use or performance. It always delivered what I needed in sessions. If I had to be REALLY picky.. it could use a spray of contact cleaner on a pot or two and on a rare occasion a key might double trigger (this era of roland synths is notorious for that) BUT as you can see and hear from the video, it's fine the way it is. I never found the need to detail it. Just stating for those that might be expecting MINT. Otherwise.. this is an amazing example of an SH5. Basses, leads, modulated madness.. it delivers."
