Vanilla Synth by muSonics – Boutique Analog Beauty at Superbooth 2025
video upload by Jonathan Knightsnare
"At Superbooth 2025, I had one of those “stop in your tracks” moments when I stumbled across muSonics' Vanilla Synthesizer — and luckily, got to hang out with the incredibly thoughtful creator, Amos, who walked me through the philosophy and craftsmanship behind this stunning instrument.
The Vanilla Synthesizer is a 5U modular analog synth, but don’t let the minimalist look fool you — under the hood, this thing is loaded with sonic personality and beautifully engineered references to vintage legends:
🎛️ The filter takes inspiration from the SEM/Oberheim lineage, offering that sweet, musical, slightly gritty character that feels alive at every knob turn.
🎚️ The mixer section is modeled after a vintage Moog CP3, giving your waveforms a subtle analog saturation that glues sounds together in a way no plugin can touch.
🔁 Normalized patching means you can play without any cables, but every section can still be overridden, so it's flexible for both beginners and modular veterans.
🌰 All of this is housed in a gorgeous solid walnut enclosure, handcrafted and finished in Illinois — it’s a tactile joy that looks like a piece of mid-century art as much as a synth.
What struck me most wasn’t just how good it sounds — which it does — but how thoughtful the whole instrument feels. It’s clear that Amos isn’t just an engineer, but a true musician and synth lover who’s building tools meant to inspire.
This isn’t mass-market gear. It’s boutique, handcrafted, analog music woodwork. And if you’ve ever wanted a synth that feels like an heirloom, this is it."

Jamming the TRS-80 - with a MIDI/80 and Orchestra 90 Sound Card
SundayJelly video upload by Joel Hilliard
This one is in via Michael Wessel [additional posts here] with some notes from him further below, but first the video description:
"Another tune using the TRS-80 Model 4(s) and the Orchestra 90, MIDI80 and classic analog tape!
Using the Technics 616 tape deck to capture audio, part 1 is composed using a TRS-80 Model 4P paired with the MIDI80, using TRACKER playing general midi drums from its onboard S2 module (Lower Computer)
The TRS-80 Model 4 is connected to the Orchestra 90 (reproduction) and George Phillips's newest update of the Orchestra 90 Organ (Available with the MIDI80 software). For the 1st part, the sound was routed through a EH BlackFinger, into a Bass Amp IR Cab.
The 2nd part is routed to a Boutique Amp IR setup, using the Mutron III as an added envelope filter for the 'jelly' sound.
Everything was fed to a digital mixer (Behringer X2222) and recorded directly to the cameras audio via USB. (No multitracking here)
I realize there are errors, clicks, hiss, pops, and all the other things we try to control from an analog perspective, but even with Dolby NR there is still some artifacts that accompany my terrible playing. Technically, you just watched me write this so, ENJOY! Thanks for watching!"
Additional videos:
Additional notes via Michael:
"A while ago, you posted about my MIDI/80 project for the TRS-80 - a MIDI sound card and MIDI interface. [posted here]
https://github.com/lambdamikel/MIDI-80
In the meantime, Joel Hilliard has been making some awesome music with his TRS-80 Model 4 and Model 4p, MIDI/80, and another extension called the "Orchestra" sound card.
He is playing the Model 4 using George Phillips' music synthesizer program for the Orchestra soundcard, "STORCH".
Back in the the day, the TRS-80s didn't really have great sound capabilities, other than their cassette interfaces which could be used for rudimentary sound output. However, this was extremely primitive in comparison to what the competition offered later (e.g., the SID in the C64, POKEY in the Atari 8bits, the AY 3-8910 in various other machines, etc.) Hence, the "Orchestra" sound card quickly became a popular add-on that added more advanced sound capabilities - basically, the Orchestra is a stereo DAC, but all the waveform generation had to be done by the CPU. Back in the day, the Orchestra was used in a "batch programming" mode where a music score was created in a textual special-purpose music programming language, that would then be "compiled" by the TRS-80 to be played back by the Orchestra sound card. Unfortunately, there was never an "interactive" music program that would allow users to use the card in an incremental way, as a musical instrument - until October 2024, when George Phillips released the "STORCH" Orchestra synthesizer program! This is what Joel playing in the video. Given that the Orchestra is a stereo DAC and all the sound generation heavy lifting has to be done by the CPU in realtime, the polyphony is limited to 2, and there are no filters, envelopes, etc. However, STORCH offers basic waveforms such as Saw, Triangle, and Sine. In addition, you can hear MIDI/80 for the the drum track - drums are coming from an S2 Waveblaster plugin, and he is using the TRACKER program on the TRS-80 Model 4p. You can find all the software in the MIDI/80 Github above."

Toybox Audio FM Zone
Toybox FM Zone Synth: Very Good, Very Easy AND Very Deep // Walkthrough & Review
video upload by Gavinski’s Tutorials
"This video is a detailed walkthrough, demo and review of ToyBox Audio’s FM Zone. I go into many aspects which are not included in the manual, at least not at the time of release. FM Zone is an excellent ‘boutique’ FM synth for desktop and iPad, an runs both as a plugin and standalone. I really like it, and think it will appeal both to FM experts and people who don’t know much about FM or even subtractive synthesis. It is very accessible but you can also go super deep if you want to. It’s also very reasonably priced. It is based on 4-operator FM, but allows for use of lots of different waveforms so you can incorporate elements of physical modeling, ring mod, AM, additive synthesis and more. The envelopes combined with looping options for envelopes allow for mad sound design possibilities. It also has a massive collection of great sounding filter types. Links etc can be found below. Enjoy!"

"FM Zone is an easy-to-use polyphonic synthesiser plugin with sophisticated FM and sample engines and a bank of flexible multi-segment envelopes to shape the sound in any direction you desire. Perfect for huge FM basses and cutting leads
The synthesiser features two powerful engines that can be layered together for a variety of complex sounds and textures. The ‘Synth’ engine features a powerful FM engine with a variety of 'special' operator types (FM, supersaw, additive, physical modelling etc) for expressive, harmonically-rich timbres. The ‘Sample’ engine can be used to mix additional textures or attacks samples over the sound."

Model 77 Dual Layer Synth Softube NO TALKING SOUNDS DEMO
NO TALKING SOUNDS DEMO video upload by Andrew G Dugros

Details via Plugin Boutique & Softube:
The most expressive synth of its time, redesigned.
The authentic sound, interactions, and performance of three famed Japanese hardware units from 1977
A redesigned, intuitive new interface for an improved and modern workflow
Three versions included: the instrument, seven modules for Modular, and two modules for Amp Room
Model 77 Dual Layer Synth gives you one of the most influential sounds of our time. It is the iconic sound of Blade Runner, Chariots of Fire, Billie Jean, Africa, and Human Nature — among countless others. Softube modeled and accurately articulated every detail of the circuits of three legendarily expressive Japanese synthesizers from 1977 and put them in one user-friendly plug-in. The sound, interaction, and performance remain as close to the hardware as possible, while the complex interfaces of the original instruments are enhanced with an intuitive redesign. Finally, your most-coveted synth has the workflow you deserve.
The Art of Rock & Roll Science
Softube's reputation for creating tools that enhance workflow and offer superior sound quality is rock solid. Their partnerships with premium brands like Tube-Tech, Solid State Logic, Chandler Limited, Weiss Engineering, and Trident have spanned decades.
They built Model 77 Dual Layer Synth on this legacy of passion, expert modeling, and attention to detail. Because to create synth plug-ins that innovate and elevate, you have to have heart, soul, and Rock & Roll Science.
Time for a redesign
When designing Model 77, Softube took great care to create a more efficient user interface that makes the plug-in easier to navigate. Two layers are accessible directly from the front panel, but the focus stays on one layer at a time. This improvement enables you to adjust your sound quickly and confidently. Softube also redesigned the position of the sections to communicate the instrument's proper signal flow. A change that helps facilitate sound design. Now, the Ring Mod section on the interface corresponds to its location in the signal flow. The balance slider is between the upper and lower layers so that you can self-assuredly move between the layers while adjusting
parameters for each layer.

The Forgotten Synth That Launched a Ground-Breaking Technology
video upload by HAINBACH
"Franklin Eventoff, an American tinkerer and musician invented the force sensing resistor in 1977. This allowed for touch control of voltage, which he used to create instruments. It found first commercial musical use in the Mattel Musical Thing, a cheap toy synth. Frustrated with the experience, Eventoff went on to create the much more refined Sonica. The Sonica is a lovingly crafted boutique instrument with an oscillator by famed Serge Tcherepnin, the creator of the Serge synthesizer. Only about 650 where made, and they are collector's items. The technology of the force sensing resistor proved hugely successful and lives on in cars, robotics and instruments like the AKAI MPC and the Otamatone.

UVI Introduces Noctua Multi-layer Instrument
video uploads by UVI
Venus Theory spent a year making a free plugin...
video upload by Venus Theory
"Howdy! Today I want to talk about the project that's taken up the last year of my life that you can get right now for the low price of free thanks to my friends at UVI.
Noctua ► https://bit.ly/noctuavt"
"From the mind of Venus Theory, renowned sound designer and YouTube creator, Noctua combines the worlds of hardware synthesis and boutique effects to realize an exquisite collection of hand-built instruments, ready to create sprawling soundscapes and evolving cinematic universes, rich with detail and movement.

All sounds in Noctua were designed, recorded and processed by Venus Theory to capture the raw and visceral world of cinematic sound design. Divided into three categories, 'Effects Box' sounds were recorded from a variety of analog and digital hardware synthesizers processed through boutique pedals and custom digital FX, while 'EMF' sounds explore EMF recordings, transformed and multi-sampled using a variety of techniques and effect chains to create usable sonic instruments, and 'Analog', as a morphable raw source, giving users a deep pool of sonic possibility and textural exploration.
Each of Noctua's 3 sound layers has been fitted with a complex, microtonal sequencer with built-in randomization and probability. From subtle modulation and detuning to complex voicing and progressions, each layer can be customized with deep sequence control to create lush movement and sonic narrative, all with clear and easy-to-use controls.
Noctua's sound sources are treatable with fully adjustable delay and reverb sends along with powerful master buss processing including overdrive, compressor, eq, and maximizer let you dial-in the perfect sound, all from within the instrument - delivering a complete toolbox for evolving, cinematic sound design.
Noctua features a custom designed selection of one-knob fx chains. Here you can quickly browse different treatments and utilize them for sonic reinforcement, or to create performance-based transformations to the overall energy and grit of your sound. Each chain was designed by Venus Theory, providing a wide range of unique characters to explore.
100 hand-crafted presets are included, professionally designed both by Venus Theory and the UVI sound design team, delivering stylish and rarified sonic tapestries, from brooding and nuanced to terrifying. Presets are fully editable, allowing you to easily adapt the ideas to suit your needs, or create your own designs from scratch."

SoundForce Introduces SFC-OB Class-Compliant Boutique Oberheim OB-Style Hardware Controller
via SoundForce

Features
With 37 rotary pots, 41 switches and 45 LEDs, you can finally control your virtual instrument in an instinctive and fun way. Create better synth sounds easier and improve your overall experience. A couple of extra “USER” controls are available to be freely assigned to additional parameters, for example Reverb size, Delay time, DAW FX sends levels. etc… The controller sends out standard MIDI cc messages and can be used with any software that is MIDI-mappable. A web-based control panel app allows the user to change the cc messages number for each control, change the MIDI channel and load the different plugin modes.
Plugin modes
Although the controller can be used with any software that can be mapped to MIDI CC messages, the SFC-OB has been specifically designed to work with the most popular OB-style synth plugins. Set the controller to the right plugin mode using the control panel. This will ensure that every switch on the SFC-OB is fitting the plugin used as well as possible. For more information, please check out the manual on the support page.
Build quality
The controller is assembled in The Netherlands with parts from Europe and Asia. It is built to last and withstand intense usage on tour and in the studio. SoundForce has an excellent track record for its controller line, with many units built and very little registered issues and repairs. The enclosure is made of 100% sheet metal and is manufactured by Grawart (http://www.grawart.pl). The case is made of bent steel and powder coated in black. The front panel is aluminum, also powder coated and screen printed with scratch-proof white and blue ink. Walnut wood side panels of 8mm thickness are fitted to both sides of the controller. On the electronics and firmware side, the controller is powered by the same STM32 Cortex-M micro-controller platform used successfully in previous products, insuring a very high level of compatibility with different computers and DAWs. The devices have been even used successfully with iPads.
2-way/1-way communication
As with previous controllers, users can enjoy 2-way integration using the latest Arturia OP-Xa V. This means that the controller interface can be updated when presets are changed in the plugin, when plugin instances are switched or even manually on demand. The controller even accounts for discrepancies between a plugin pot-position and a controller pot-position, and implements pick-up or smoothing modes to avoid juming values. This allows for an improved and tighthly integrated workflow. Other traditional 1-way MIDI CC mapping is available for the brand new GForce OB-X, SonicProjects OP-X PRO-II, DiscoDSP OB-Xd and Synapse Obsession. Those modes, even though more limited, still offer a fantastic new hands-on experience for virtual synth users.
Pricing and Availability
The SFC-OB is available on the SoundForce webshop for 399 euros incl VAT (exact price will depend on your local VAT %) in the EU and 329 euros for customers outside the EU. Perfect Circuit will be distributing the SFC-OB in the US, Signal Sounds in the UK, Cicada Sound in Canada and Dupertuis in Switzerland. Please get in touch with your local distributor for pre-ordering/ordering and pricing information."

RS050 Waldorf Rack Attack: Analog Virtual
video upload by rejected synths
"Being way ahead of your time more often than not isn‘t actually that great. Sure, sometimes innovation pays off big time, but for some reason, pushing boundaries and conventions often won’t instantly get you the acclaim you actually deserve.
This happened more than once in general history (and in synth history too) and it is certainly true for the VST plugin turned Rack unit featured in this video. These days, it’s fairly common for us to see manufacturers squeezing what are essentially plugins into tiny shiny boxes (Roland Boutique anyone?) and while you could get the same sound for less (or free?) in your DAW, physical buttons an knobs always have a tendency to spark creativity and fun in a way that is seldom achieved sitting in front of a big screen, squeezing virtual buttons and knobs with your mouse cursor.
While The Waldorf Rack Attack certainly isn’t as portable and/or affordable as your average Volca, for me it’s an absurdly fun machine. When I took up collecting the actual hardware synths I could not afford as a teen I was absolutely baffled when I learned that Waldorf had also released a hardware version of the Attack, one of my all time favorite VST plugins, in 2002. I instantly wanted it but it took me several years to find one at an even remotely affordable price.
On the very few occasions I managed to find a unit at a reasonable, I was always too late and someone snagged it away from me before I could make an offer. This way I learned that I don’t seem to be the only one to appreciate this freaky machine. But with some patience (actually a few years of patience) I finally manged to find and buy one myself. To my surprise it turned out that the Rack Attack was even more awesome than I had expected, because Waldorf was kind enough to add some extra magic to the rack version of the Attack, it isn’t just an incredibly wild sounding percussion and drum synth but can also be used to create all kinds of synth sounds and even comes with a built in sequencer. It turned out that, with some planning ahead, you could create full tracks on a single Rack Attack and the pattern sequencer can be a great tool in any dawless setup.
Only very few people seem to know about this absolute gem of an machine, not much at all can be fond on YouTube itself, well until now that is ;)"
