De-Composite @ Time Machine 2012

De-Composite @ Time Machine 2012 from Alex White on Vimeo.

Documentation of video installation at Time Machine, Sydney, July 2012.

De-Composite

De-Composite exploits analog video encoding systems including composite video to produce a video form. These systems were ubiquitous and central to television, video and gaming production and consumption for decades and are now rapidly approaching obsolescence. There is a fluidity and immediacy to directly engaging and interrupting these analog systems and also an opacity of function encouraging a reliance upon cause and effect, trial and error rather than conception and execution.

De-Composite utilises movement and configurations of person(s) within the space of the installation as modulation sources to synthesise a real time generated hybrid analog / digital video projection with stereo audio.

Alex White

Alex has an intense interest in synthesis as applied to audio and video. For more than 10 years he has created his own software based instruments and more recently has begun utilising a modular synthesiser for both audio and video performances and installations. Alex is a co-organiser of Moduluxxx – Modular Synthesis Festival which debuted in 2012, Alex has also co-directed Serial Space, Electrofringe Festival (when it was a festival), Liquid Architecture Sydney and is the founder and project consultant for the Lion Mountain Studio project. Alex currently works for the Community Broadcasting Association of Australia on the Digital Radio Project.

"Up for sale is a very rare Pollard Syndrum Quad w/ Original Pedal and Drum Pads. The Synthesizer and pads both work great. All channels are working great except the "Snare 1" setting on each channel is inaudible. The "Snare 1" is supposed to be a quieter, shorter snare than "Snare 2." "Snare 2" works great on each channel and is controlled by the sustain slider underneath of it. The Quad is also in great cosmetic condition, with only minor paint chips here and there. See pics for details. The slider caps have all been replaced with Arp-style rubber ones. (the original slider caps fell off a long time ago.) Included in this auction is:

QuNeo with Z3ta+2 & Ableton Live

"Encanti demonstrates the QuNeo MIDI controller by Keith McMillen Instruments to program patches for Z3ta+2 VST synthesizer by Cakewalk, running Ableton Live Suite 8 using Windows 7 (via bootcamp partition) on an Intel MacBook Pro.

Each square pad is sending MIDI CC data on X and Y axes using "Latch" mode. The CC messages are sent to different synth parameters within Z3ta+2. The MIDI notes and drum loop are both pre-recorded in this example.

Do you like my sounds? My Z3ta+2 presets are available through Cakewalk. Check out "Mutant Rebellion" and "Mutant Revolution" available here: http://www.store.cakewalk.com/b2cus/category.aspx?categoryID=106

QuNeo with Ableton Live Suite 8: DJ Effects

Published on Jul 9, 2012 by encanti

"Encanti demonstrates using KMI's QuNeo to mix tracks and use effects with Ableton Live Suite 8.

Each square pad is sending MIDI CC data on X and Y axes. The pads that stay lit are using "Latch" mode, others are using "Grid" which snap the XY values back to a pre-determined value. The CC messages are sent to different knobs within Ableton Live. The crossfader determines the dry/wetness of several effects.

Little Boxes is a music box concept for iPad. It consists of a tangible part composed of three separate music boxes that interact with an iPad and an application. When placing one of the boxes on the iPad, it recognizes it and activates. The idea is that each box contains its own universe revealed by the action of the crank with an animation and melody proper to each. The aim is to give a new dimension to the music box, and transcribe visual sensations that don't exist in a standard music box. This work reflects my desire to play with the physical and digital elements by making them interact. It allowed me to embrace different areas, and confront myself with creative and technical challenges. The result is the creation of a world through the music box, where everyone can enter and interact with it.

Roland MV-8000 Fixes and Repairs

Roland MV-8000 Midi In Replacement & Fix For Under £10

"I bought a MV-8000 from eBay fully working... well not quite. Then I set about bringing it back to life.

After buying the unit I bought the training dvd and the first thing it said was there was Midi In so you could play a keyboard into it. When I tried it didn't work. I went online and followed all the links thinking it was user error i.e. ME. But when nothing worked the electronics head engaged and it was time to go electronic fishing and open it up for a little investigation.

This video is how i fixed the problem without spending hundreds of pounds on a Roland repair. Don't even dream of attempting this unless you have a steady hand, have a good quality soldering iron or a father or friend who has the bits.

Music (and Animation) Made with Buttons - by Satellites

YouTube Published on Jul 18, 2012 by kidwithoutradio

Update 7/31: In case you missed it, click the link below for the album. Embed below as well.

Sound:

New song "The Answer" from the new album "Ghost". Release: 7/24/12

Animation:

Each button = one frame in the animation & one sound. As a result, any movement on the screen is a result of each button pressed, and is not simply caused by sound. Each button has it's own unique still picture assigned to it. All together the frames took me over 80 hours to create/design, resulting in a little over 50 seconds of footage.

The new controllers:

-1 32 illuminated game button (UHID) controller custom built by me, controlling the sounds and frames simultaneously.

-1 iPad running Touch OSC, in custom housing used to switch banks of sounds and images.

Software:

Ableton Live (Music), Cell DNA (Animation), junXion (UHID Controller), OSCulator (iPad)

Design:

The album cover for the new "Ghost" record is featured in the animation. The 8 sided star has been used in various cultures throughout the world as a symbol of balance, harmony, and cosmic order. The original star design however has 16 sides, but multiples of 4 are used because of the 4 bar measure & 32 buttons on the controller. This makes it easy to achieve an animation that moves evenly.

Side Note:

Four days before shooting this I stuck a screwdriver through my finger working on an electrical connector. A piece of that connector was lodged in my finger. After my own attempts to cut it out with an Xacto knife, I went to the hospital. They told me that I had to wait 6 days to get the metal piece out. So I said fuck it, and shot this video with that half inch piece of metal in my hand. If you look closely you can see my left index finger isn't doing too much.
