Building a Sequencer with the World's First Personal Computer

via giorgiosancristoforo.net where you'll find the full post.

Giorgio Sancristoforo is the man behind Berna.

"So here is the idea: in the video episodes that I will post here, I will learn assembly, refresh my Basic knowledge, and start programming and connecting the Altair to a modern PC/Mac to transform the Altair into a digital sequencer (linear and/or generative).

The first part of this musical quest is to make the Altair communicate with MaxMSP software by Cycling74, so I will be able to build both standalone programs and MIDI software interfaces, later I will try to make some tests with Processing.

Next I’d like to interface the Altair with Arduino and see if I can manage to work to a prototype board+software to sequence Control Voltages for the Buchla Music Easel analog synthesizer. The Easel’s programming cards are the ideal interface for the task. Any help, comments and critics from retrocomputing and assembly lovers, is more than welcome." R.A.Moog 901b osc comparisons with hand-built unit...

Published on Feb 16, 2015 noddyspuncture

"Here is my *comparison video* comparing my own hand-built 901b with an original R.A.Moog oscillator. It also turned a demo of my Modular - explaining how my custom switching between mixer channels works. I'm really pleased with my home-built unit... for all intents and purposes, it sounds exactly like my other 901b oscillators... all four of which each have their own sound anyway..! See what you think..!? Sound is recorded direct from my live sub-mix set up."

Sebton VCS - Verbos Composition Suitcase Synthesizer System

via Sebton

Artist: Frédéric Sebton
Output: Verbos Composition Suitcase
Year: 2015

"This custom case was built to resemble vintage suitcase synthesizers of the early 70s like the Buchla Electric Music Box (1970) and the EMS Synthi AKS (1972).

A vintage briefcase was converted to hold the the complete ’Verbos Electronics Composition System’ from Mark Verbos. Modules include the Amplitude Tone Controller, Complex Oscillator, Dual Four Pole, Harmonic Oscillator, Voltage Multistage as well as Doepfer A-140 ADSR, A-119 EXT. IN. Pittsburgh Modular Audio Mixer/Attenuator and Intellijel µjack. The entire case is powered by Tiptop Audio µZeus.

The Verbos Electronics Touchplate Keyboard is mounted separately in a converted PHILIPS Infrakamin and powered by an external power source."

"I purchased this unit 2 years ago at an estate sale. The story is that this u it was once part of the Carnegie Mellon school of music (who also did some work on the synth). It was sold off to a private owner who died around 2007 and I purchased it for his sister along with some other pieces. From what I can tell it seems to be fully working although it sounds like a loose nut that holds the face plate on is rolling around when you tilt the closed case. I can fix this if you ask before I ship."

"Made in the 1970s, System 3000 modular synthesizers were popular with those experimenting with electronic music. They were reputedly sold to Karlheinz Stockhausen and were distributed in the United States by Bob Moog's Big Briar Inc.

The kit on offer belonged to my late brother, who worked for many years in the sound industry.

The keyboard and modules on offer have not been used in over 20 years, but appear to still be in reasonable condition. There is no apparent damage to the circuitry or the module fascias. The small number of screws on the keyboard appear superficially rusty, though they still turn easily. There are a few scratches to the metal casing of the keyboard."

"Included in this set are the following genuine Synton items:
(the descriptions are taken from websites and mean little to me – so I regret that I am unable to answer specific questions about their function)

KBM 35 Keyboard
44-key monophonic keyboard with scale control.
3005 EGR
Discrete ADSR with manual trigger button and LED.
3006 MPL - Multiple
3015 MXA
3-1 mixer with unity-gain input.
3017 VCF
State-variable 12 dB filter. One output is Band pass, the other has a control for low-notch-high pass.
3021 VCO (x2)
Uses a Curtis chip. Triangle, saw and variable pulse outputs, hard sync and PWM inputs.
3209 VCA
Dual VCA with positive gain-offset controls. This can be used for feeding a sound to the output without an envelope while testing or tuning.
3211 PRM/NRG
Ring modulator, white/pink noise with level control, VLF noise with level control.
3218 INV / SLR
Dual inverter with offset controls (also used as variable voltage source) and slew limiter with rise and fall controls. This can be used as simple AR envelope.
3223 2LFO
Dual LFO with VC speed. Square and triangle outputs.
3235 ENV / CPR
Envelope follower and comparator with reference level control."
