Vintage Analog Synths - pads/strings shoot-out - old-school synth-pop tutorial/workflow
Published on Sep 26, 2017 Espen Kraft
"Shoot-out starts at 02:07
Which one of the following analog synths from the 80s has the best pads and strings?
Elka EK22
Roland JX-8P
Korg DW-8000
Roland Alpha Juno 2
Roland Juno 6
What effect does the in-built chorus have on the sound?
We find out here in this shoot-out where I put them up agains each other.
These are all synths I use when I make my tracks and I love them all for their respective strenghts.
I've given each synth the same chords and intervals, both with and without the in-built chorus.
This is not a "science" test, but a musically test where I just play some pad and string sounds that I've created to be as similar as possible. There is some differences between the sounds as the internal structure of the sound engines differ. I've chosen a saw wave for all the synths (the Korg has a digitally stored saw) as an oscillator and the first three of the synths can have two oscillators, where as the last two (Juno 2 and 6) only has one.
As you can hear in the shoot-out, they can sound remarkably fat regardless.
Some reverb from the Strymon Bluesky is added on all synths. The Korg DW-8000 is given a slight stereo delay and some chorus externally to get the same amount of modulation as this do not have in-built chorus.

Sonic LAB: ROLI Seaboard BLOCK

"We take a look at the more affordable Seaboard Technology from ROLI. This 2 octave, smaller form
Seaboard with Bluetooth MIDI (or wired USB) may be just the thing if you want to get into some
expressive playing, the sounds Equator Player offer are also pretty good."
Ten badly played synth hits on Nord Lead A1

"Covers of famous synth riffs from ten hits of the 1980s. Played live on my Nord Lead A1 synthesizer. No external effects or processing were applied, you're hearing just the A1 itself. No extra charge for the bum notes."
Synth Sequencer Echo Electronica (ARP 2600, Microbrute, Volca Keys, Roland JD-Xi, Strymon)
Published on Sep 26, 2017 Ralph Baumgartl
"Electronica Live Synthesizer Jam using the ARP 2600 for Bass and the Korg Volca Keys, Arturia Microbrute and Korg M50 for Lead Sequencer lines. The Delay (Strymon Timeline) and Reverb (Strymon BigSky) effects are synced via Midi Clock. Once again I think that I have subconsciously been influenced by the music of Jean-Michel Jarre, although this track is a bit more on the aggressive side with its 130 BPM.
The gear list:
ARP 2600 with Arturia Keystep Controller, Korg M50, Korg Volca Keys, Arturia Microbrute, Roland Vocoder VP-330, Roland JD-Xi, Roland JX-3P, Akai MPK25 controlling Macbook with Logic Pro, Strymon BigSky, Strymon Timeline, Zoom MS-70CDR, Boss BX-600 mixer, MOTU Micro Lite USB Midi Interface, Soundcraft Signature 22 MTK."

"fluXpad for iPhone (Universal) is out now! Draw your sounds on the skateboard, on the beach, wherever!! The screen architecture got redesigned to make drawing possible on the limited size of an iPhone screen. However the main principles are still the same of course: A unique interface that makes you think about music and sound shaping in a visual, hands-on way, free from dealing with numbers."
