The Synthfox Touchbay

Published on Aug 28, 2019 Synthfox Channel

"Touch Bay is a tactile performance signal router. It can route 4 inputs to any of the 4 outputs by means of touching the controller's pads. The perfect use of it is a CV router, although it can also be used as a sound mixer, though maybe a bit less high-end sounding as a dedicated one.

Touch Bay comes in three pieces: the module, the tactile handle and the ribbon cable to connect them together. The handle is a PCB fit into a machined piece of plywood, and it's meant to sit outside of the rack and be a performance tool that you can pick up and play without tangling your hands in your patch's wiring.

The module has 4 inputs labelled with letters (A, B, C, D) and 4 outputs labelled with numbers (1, 2, 3, 4) - each with an individual sensitivity setting. These signals are directly connected to corresponding pads on the tactile handle: pads A, B, C and D are inputs, and pads 1, 2, 3 and 4 are outputs - just touch an input pad and an output pad to route! You can touch more than one inputs to mix signals, or more than one outputs to send signals to multiple destinations. Works really well with CV routing or feedback paths!"

Ensoniq Mirage: Soundprocess - the forgotten OS

Published on Jan 28, 2020 MIDERA

"Soundprocess is a synthesizer engine in the Ensoniq Mirage. Everyone knows the Mirage as that hex-based, hard to use sampler. But what most people don't realize is that an alternative OS for the Mirage was made that's even more confusing than the original ones that turns it into a 4-oscillator synthesizer! This is not for the faint of heart. I am barely scratching the surface of this 'synthesizer'.

The structure is such that you have a program. Inside that program are patches. But don't think that just because you have selected a patch you are editing the patch. You could be editing a different patch. You have to make sure you're within the right split number within the program and have selected the same patch as the one you're editing. Anyway, it's a pretty cool OS, but it is hard to navigate.

I believe this OS was created by someone named Mark Cecys. Whoever they were, they did not place an acknowledgement section in the user guide, but it is easily available so anyone is welcome to download it and review for themselves."

"The machine has been stored for the last decade with the internal batteries removed. The machine has been boxed up, clean, dry, and undisturbed throughout this time. Coming out of storage the machine no longer powers up. In the last photo there is detail of a small area of corrosion that over time has degraded some of the surface components next to where the internal batteries would have been placed."
