Hi, we're Jesse and Ed.
Jesse became fascinated with modular synthesis around 2016 and went back to school as an electronic engineering technician to learn how to repair and create his own eurorack modules.
Altered State Machines grew out of Jesse's first project, the Aristotle sequencer which is now in its fifth iteration. Jesse is our electronics and hardware mastermind. Ed joined forces to twiddle bits with the software.

"With Vamp Apollo View modular took the early Korg MS-20 and MS-10 filter designs, which favoured non-linear character over stability and control, they added more character with a tube input saturation stage and tube resonance feedback path, further output clipping stage options and then designed in modern stability and control. I joke in the video the filter is so rubbery it might as well be wearing a gimp mask. Vamp is also multimode with low pass, band pass and high pass modes with routable pre/post VCA and gain option, smart normalled CV options and prevision circuitry to turn it into a full single module tube voice, killer kick drum and more.
VAMP is a multi-mode analogue filter that gives you low-pass, band-pass, and high-pass responses in a compact 8HP design. At its heart lies a classic Sallen-Key topology supercharged with real vacuum tube (12AU7) saturation and multiple stages of clipping, letting you move seamlessly from smooth, hi-fi filtering to snarling, overdriven character.
One half of the tube is used to saturate the input, while the other half provide MS-20-inspired resonance limiting (tube, not diodes). With FLOW placing the VCA pre-tube or post-filter, and FANGS selecting Off / Soft / Hard output clipping, VAMP ranges from subtle warmth to ferocious harmonic destruction. The GRAPHIC ENVELOPE consists of 2 separate analog envelopes each derived from stepping thru 8 levels at a shared rate. The envelope can be run as a dual 8 step or a dual 15 step envelope. Easily create and adjust complex envelope shapes with time based movement that is easily adjustable in a graphic layout. 3 usable time ranges allow for the accurate setting of specific overall envelope times. Level inputs allow CV or audio to set the level of the envelopes. 2 rate knobs set the envelope length and can be switched between via gate or CV input. The 2 envelopes can be swapped to the other's output pre- Response via gate or CV input. The HOLD STEP pauses the envelope while the gate input is high, making a playable and responsive envelope. Gate outputs pre/post the HOLD STEP, EOC and total envelope period allow for example: the switching of rate or the delayed trigger of a second envelope during the envelope cycle.
