In/Out 2010: Digital Performance Festival Submissions

"The Tank is accepting proposals for:
In/Out 2010: Digital Performance Festival
In/Out is an annual festival that features leading performers, developers, artists, and tinkerers of the digital design community in hopes bridging the gap between the forum based world and the stage. The festival seeks to bring digitally driven performances into the limelight with two full days of workshops and performances. We invite programmers, visualists, hardware hackers, electronics gurus, musicians, and novices to take part in the events of In/Out. With workshops to encourage others to join in the fray and inspiring performances, this is not only the time for those interested in the constantly changing field to get involved, but for current members of the community to step up their game as well. The boundary pushing festival is produced by the Tank, a humble non-profit performing arts presenter located in Manhattan. In addition to In/Out, the Tank also produces the legendary Bent and Blip festivals as well as nightly performances from New York City's finest emerging artists.
Visit In/Out's website at http://inoutfest.org/
Videos of last year's performances can be found at http://vimeo.com/album/158127

Performers
In/Out is searching for musicians, visualists, dancers, and performers who have integrated digital technologies into their work. From building custom controllers to creating their own software, or users of new technology, we want it! Submit a brief description of your performance along with a sample of your work.
If at all possible, we would greatly appreciate proposal materials in the form of hyperlinks.
Live performance videos are preferred.
Workshops + Lectures
Help motivate the vanguard by leading a workshop in new media for audio/video
performance. Past workshops have included: working in Jitter, building drum machines in Reaktor, and code driven music composition with Processing. In/Out is especially interested in hands on, kit based, and introductory workshops.
Please submit a brief description of what you would like to teach or share, along with any work you have done, are doing, or will do in the field.
Deadline for proposals: June 11, 2010

griefer + noiselab demo

YouTube via deathindustrial — May 02, 2010 — "A PE / death industrial oriented demo showing off an example application of the Noiselab micro modular by Blue Lantern. The Noiselab is patched into a Digidelay (for some pseudo tape echo) and then a DL-8 to which is used to latch an 8 second phrase. The loop was setup just prior to recording so I could fade it in. A second unrelated Digidelay has a simple 3 second junk percussion loop latched, also so I could fade it in. The Noiselab is then used to create PWM low end and LFO warble swoops (the two components of the loop in the DL-8), alternating between them using the mixer and triggering with the push button . Finally, the Noiselab is also going through a bit of compression (DBX 266XL) for level control.

Sorry about the hiss, a sub-standard camera is to blame."

"iPad running TouchOSC and a Korg Microkontrol - pretty much everything I need, on a relatively tiny surface. Since TouchOSC on the iPad uses networked UDP that has a potential for lag, the OSC layout I've made focuses on non-microsecond controls (mostly mix and transport control). For recording drums and keys, the kontrol reigns supreme."

Analog Drums - Dave Smith Evolver MEK and 309 Jam

YouTube via statikfire — May 02, 2010 — "Simple kick and hat from a 309, the rest is all Dave Smith Evolver MEK doing an analog drum sequence plus tweak. Recorded May 2010. You can't hear it too well here, but my speakers had a nice low freq thump, this was an absolute joy to record. MP3 avail upon request. Hell, I'll give you the Ableton file if you want. Hope you enjoy. Chicago Industrial. Oh, and the plane thing... yeah, I didn't sync the video and had to put something in there, so why not a night time landing sequence? Anaheim to Chicago in February. That's my story, and I'm sticking to it. What I though I would do is.... Nevermind."

Abnormal songery (Behringer BSY600 + 2 Doepfer Dark Energy + Audacity)

YouTube via GruithuisenCityMan — May 01, 2010 —

"Hello ! My name is Frederic Gerchambeau. I have made this movie and this music. The music has been made with Plogue Bidule sequencing a Doepfer Dark Energy and Behringer Bass Synthesizer BSY600. Another Doepfer Dark Energy is played by hand. The sounds of these 2 Doepfer Dark Energy and Behringer Bass Synthesizer BSY600 has been reintroducted into Plogue Bidule in order to permit to a long delay to be added. The all thing has been made in one take and has been a bit edited with Audacity and a Behringer Multi-FX FX600 effect pedal (compression, short stereo delay and pitch downshifting added). Enjoy !"

ELEKTRON TM-1 TURBOMIDI USB

via this auction

"The TM-1 is the first MIDI interface making use of the new Elektron Turbocharged standard. Use it with compatible gear to make slow MIDI transfers a thing of the past.

The TM-1 is the first MIDI interface making use of the new Elektron Turbocharged standard. It is a 1 in/1 out USB MIDI interface capable of increasing the MIDI bandwidth up to 10 times. It is designed with the Machinedrum and the Monomachine in mind, but it will work perfectly with any MIDI equipped gear.

Operation is driverless. Just plug the TM-1 into any USB port of your Mac or PC computer and you're ready to go."

New version of EMXP with RS422 support

via Brandt:

"this is a pretty big deal for Emulator II/Emax/Emax II owners and might be of interest to your other readers. In short, you can now transfer samples to and from these old samplers using a modern PC, as opposed to a vintage Mac. The software, drivers, schematics, etc. are all free."

Subject: [emulatorII-list] New version of EMXP with RS422 support
Reply-To: emulatorII-list yahoogroups.com

The RS422 support has been released in the newest version of EMXP today.
You can download this version (for free of course) on http://www.emxp.net

As announced a while ago, this version allows serial communication between EMXP on Windows XP (or higher) and the Emax-I or Emulator II.
Sound banks can now be uploaded and downloaded without having to use a vintage Mac computer anymore...

...you will need a custom built USB-RS422 adapter though :)
Details how to build this adapter yourself can be found on http://www.emxp.net also. The thing is called EMUCOMBOX - OK, I admit this name is the result of a weak moment of low creativity.

Anyway, I'd like to give credits to and thank MrJulian (fellow member on the Yahoo Emax Group) a lot for making this possible by sending me a jumpstart prototype last year. A new world went open for Emu Emax/EII fans.

Note: in the future a smaller and easier-to-build version of the adapter may be released, based on another microprocessor board.
The current one is working fine, but be aware that some of the soldering will be quite tricky !

Have fun

Flame MIDI Talking Synth

via this auction

"The flame midi talking synth is a small-sized midi-controlled sound module based on the analogue speakjet chip, produced by the U.S. company Magnevation originally designed for basic artificially generated speech output in american english it was then refined and further developed as an 8-bit sound module with speech-like sounds and synthetic robot voices as well as beeps, alarms, noise and retro-style sci-fi sounds. Due to the structure of the speakjet(with its complex sound synthesizer, preset sounds and serial interface) it offers an impressive range of possibilities. It contains 72 speech elements (allophones), 43 sound effects, and 12 dtm touch tones. the idea was to create sounds, patterns and sequences in the 8-bit style of the 80s or other retro sounds for making music instead of just simulating speech. most allophones can be tuned and used tonally. the flame midi talking synth contains two speakjet ? chips to produce a richer and more complex tonal variety as well as generating a pseudo stereo effect.

Since the speakjet has not originally been laid out for the purpose of making music it is actually not fully controllable via midi input, i.e.: once sounds are triggered they cannot be directly stopped by note off messages from a midi keyboard or a sequencer. Thus a midi-controlled audio tremolo has been implemented in the flame midi talking synth virtually allowing midi control and enabling an easier integration into a midi setup. the flame midi talking synth lets you play back preset words in its expander mode via an external midi keyboard or a sequencer. in addition you can use the flame midi talking synth as a stand-alone midi controller since all controls and joysticks send midi control/change data to the midi-out connector."
