Buchla 250e Easy Sequence Basic Setup.

Published on Jan 27, 2013 genxtargetmarket·49 videos
Left channel audio on this one.

"This video demonstrates how to setup an initial patch that will program the 250e to function as a traditional step sequencer. If you feel lost or that your 250e isn't working correctly, set it up in the following manner:

1) Set all 16 stages to "ADV" Mode. Located near the green and red "Stop" and "Start" Buttons.
2) Set all 16 stages to the same "Time Range". The button just above step 16's outer knob. If the LEDs are off then you are in MIDI clock mode and you MUST send MIDI clock to 225e. You MUST have a 225e in order to translate any MIDI into something that the 200e can use.
3) Set all 16 stages so that the inner ring of smaller blue knobs are pointing in the same direction. It doesn't matter if they are all to the right (like in this video) or all straight up or all to the left. Just set them the same in order to rule out any errors and to make things simple.
4) Make certain that you are in EDIT mode and program at least a few steps so that Pulse 1 fires from time-to-time.
5) Connect the 250e's CV 1 blue output to the black CV input jack on a principal oscillator of your choosing. I'm using a 259e in this video.
6) Turn this oscillator's SMALL blue "CV in" knob all of the way up
7) Turn this oscillator's LARGE blue "Pitch" knob all the way down and to the left.
8) Patch this oscillator's output to a channel on your 292e. This is one of the jacks at the BOTTOM of the 292e panel. The professional studio patchbay standard is Outputs over Inputs and Buchla adhere to this standard.
9) The 250e's Pulse 1 output should go to a channel of your 281e Quad Function Generator. MAKE CERTAIN THAT the 281e channel is in 'triangle' (Attack/Decay) mode. This is the one grey button at the left side of the 281e panel.
10) Set the Attack of the 281e completely to to the left
11) Set the Decay of the 281e to at least .01 or somewhere around 9 o'clock. You may have to play with this setting depending upon how fast you've set the 250e clock. If it is too short (all the way to the left) it is very possible that you won't open the 292e channel and no audio will pass.
12) Patch the BLUE output of this 281e channel to the black input of the 292e channel that you are using in step # 8 of this description.
13) Patch the output of this 292e channel to the input of your 227e, 206e, 207e or monitoring system. The output is either of the 2 audio jacks that correspond to the channel you selected to use in step # 8
14) Set the channel of the 292e to Low Pass Gate (LPG) mode. This is indicated when both green LEDs are 'off' for that channel.

15) Test the signal flow by turning the blue offset knob on the channel that you've selected in step #8. Make sure that you can see signal metering on your 227e, 206e or 207e. If there isn't any, make certain that the input channel on your 227e, 206e or 207e is turned up. If you are using headphones, slowly turn up the level on them once you see signal metering. If you are using speakers and a 227e, you must turn up the Master Volume of A&B outputs or C&D outputs. This depends upon how you've connected the rest of your monitoring chain to the 227e. The 227e's Master Outputs are the larger white knobs above input channel #4's large blue knob.

16) Turn the 292e's blue knob back down. Push the green "Start/Adv" button on the 250e. You should hear your sequence."

Dave Smith Prophet 12 | NAMM 2013 | PROAUDIOSTAR

Published on Jan 26, 2013 proaudiostar·307 videos

"New at 2013 NAMM 2013 the Prophet 12

Dave Smith Instruments today introduced a new polyphonic synthesizer, the Prophet 12, at the 2013 NAMM Show. "After 35 years of creating synths, this is simply my best synth yet," said Smith. "We sort of started from scratch on this one rather than spinning off another product from our previous designs."

At twelve voices, the Prophet 12 boasts the greatest polyphony of any instrument designed by Smith. Each voice features four oscillators capable of generating classic and complex waveforms, a sub-oscillator, resonant analog low- and high-pass filters, and analog VCAs. The new Character section adds a variety of wave shaping and sound sculpting options, like Drive, Hack, Decimation, Girth, and Air. Additional features include a tuned feedback path, a four-tap stereo delay per voice, expanded arpeggiator functionality, deep modulation capabilities, and bi-timbral operation. The LFOs, delay, and arpeggiator can all be synced, either to the internal clock or an external MIDI clock. Two programmable position- and pressure-sensitive touch sliders take the performance controls beyond the standard pitch and mod wheels (also included).

"We're already blown away by the sonic breadth of this synthesizer's new voice architecture," Smith continued. "It doesn't sound like anything else and I'm very excited for people to hear it."

The Prophet 12 is expected to be available Q2 of 2013 and is projected to cost $2999"

The sound is quite huge and the build quality is solid. It retains the classic sound you would want in a Moog synth, but is also ventures into a wider
palette of sonic possibility.

NAMM 2013: Dr. Lonnie Smith meets Sub Phatty

Uploaded on Jan 25, 2013 MoogMusicInc·222 videos

This one sent in directly from Moog. You are seeing it here on MATRIXSYNTH first folks.  You might remember him from this previous post.

"Legendary jazz organist Dr. Lonnie Smith, stopped by Moog's booth at NAMM 2013 to try out the Sub Phatty.

Learn more about the Sub Phatty here:

http://www.moogmusic.com/subphatty"

For those not familiar with Lonnie Smith you can read up on him on Wikipedia here and his official website here.

via Wikipedia:

"He was born in in Lackawanna, New York,[1] into a family with a vocal group and radio program. Smith says that his mother was a major influence on him musically, as she introduced him to gospel, classical, and jazz music. He was part of several vocal ensembles in the 1950s, including the Teen Kings. Art Kubera, the owner of a local music store, gave Smith his first organ, a Hammond B3... He was named the "Organ Keyboardist of the Year" in 2003, 2004, 2005, 2008, and 2009 by the Jazz Journalist Association."

He helped form the George Benson Quartet and followed with a solo career releasing his first album "Finger Lickin' Good". I'd say that pretty much sums up his playing above.

NAMM 2013: Tiptop Audio Trigger Riot Full Details & Video!

"The Trigger Riot represents a new type of sequencer that is both creatively deep on one hand and intuitive on the other.

From a conceptual view, the Trigger Riot generates 16 clock streams consisting of multiple time manipulation functions (division, offsets, etc) that interact to create the trigger output, and direct access to each parameter via individual knobs allows for quick manipulation. The 8 outputs are the sum of those manipulated streams per row. The outputs of the module are arranged as either a 4x4 matrix, where each of the 16 knobs affects both row and column, or as a set of independent outputs for each row or column. This allows forming 8 complex musical interactions in a ‘Matrix’ mode or 8 independent streams in ‘Independent’ mode and is switchable from one to the other on press of a button for some unexpected results.

Since each of the 16 knobs represents a real time tweakable trigger generator/modifier the Trigger Riot is extremely playable and can result very complex patterns with only few knob turns; patterns that would otherwise take much longer and in some instances be almost impossible to produce using grid based step sequencing. Patterns can have unique time signatures that can repeat or be randomized through probability, time shifted and phased, divided, multiplied and counted, it’s unbelievable how complex this module can get with minimal input.

Functions include:

Divide: Divide the clock stream into either even or odd divisions from 1 to 255

Speed: Multiply or Divide the clock streams in sub clock particles based on 24 PPQ, breaking up the standard grid values.

Probability: Sets the odds of a trigger firing which makes more varied and less rigid patterns or can create subtle accents and fills.

Pulse Width: Sets the pulse width of each stream, creating overlaps and as a result all kind of odd time signatures; also great for sustaining envelopes or for programming a high pulse fro some time.

Clock Offset: Moves the trigger streams in time to change the relationship between streams. Streams can be set to the same amount but offset to trigger in between each other rather than simultaneously to create syncopation effects.

Time Shift: Shifts the triggers streams variably in between clocks for swing type feels and off the grid patterns.

Step: Places single shot triggers on individual clock ‘Steps’ to trigger events once per pattern. This can also be seen as a pulse counter.

Mute/Sel: Muting of each trigger output for live dub mixing or to select which row to edit in ‘Independent’ mode.

Tap tempo: Tap in your own time.

Cycle: Internal reset counter to constrain pattern length and relationships between divisions

Clock Out: Trigger out of the Riot’s highly accurate internal clock

Clock Input: External clock

Reset Out: Trigger output based on the internal reset length

Reset In: External trigger input to reset the internal count

Playing sets:

The Trigger Riot features 4 banks of 4 presets for saving, and instant recall of patterns with any level of complexity making it a real time sequencer. Patterns and banks are not volatile and can be loaded for stage or studio sessions on power up.

Several riots can be synced together with all control signals shared based on a master reset, clock, and pattern across multiple units and even synced with the Circadian Rhythm sequencer.

In addition to that, a master touch controller is in development which can control up to 4 Riots for the ultimate in hardware sequencing for Tip Top’s wide array of drum and synthesis modules (of course, it works great with every other module too).

A little bit of what going on under the hood: The Trigger Riot is made with the latest in high-end microprocessors and a special combination of hardware and firmware technology designed to achieve unprecedented levels of timing and extreme types of pattern complexity.

Size: 28HP

Engine: State of the art 80MHz 32bit Processor MIPS M4K Core

Available: We are hoping to have it released late march 2013, keep your fingers crossed

Price: TBD"

It's playable as a standard monosynth, but you can use patch cords to change modulation routing etc. This is a kit-built unit (Evenfall offered kits or prebuilt units during this synth's brief run.) I believe I'm the third owner. Everything's in great shape, working well, sounding terrific. There's some very minor wear on the unit's face and rack ears, but it's overall quite nice cosmetically. Includes power supply, manual, and a handful of patch cords to get you on your way to modular bliss."
