Best Ambient Synth Shootout Videos by Christian's Sonic Spaces

Published on Jun 4, 2017 Christian's Sonic Spaces

31 videos at the time of this post showcasing various synths. Note the list is out of order for whatever reason. You can use the controls in the player above to get to what you want. Be sure to read the list below. You don't see demos for some of these synths that often. Each (synth and demo) have something different and interesting to offer. Don't miss the formant demos of the FS1R. That's the actual synth engine - no samples.

New Bastl Instruments DUDE - miniature 5 channel mixer & more

Published on May 19, 2017 Bastl Instruments

music by Václav a.k.a. Paseka : https://soundcloud.com/pasekacz

via Bastl Instruments

"Dude is a portable battery operated 5 channel audio mixer with mini jack inputs and output. Each channel has a dedicated mute button and up to +20dB gain to boost weak signals and saturate line level signals. It is a monophonic mixer but can drive your headphones and therefore its perfect for small portable rigs or submixes on stage. It runs on four AA batteries (or external power supply) and it is almost as small as its battery pack. Because each channel has enough gain it can be turned into a tone generator by feeding the output back to an input thru a passive eq and other simple circuits.

FEATURES:

5 channel monophonic mixer
up to +20dB (10x) gain knob for each channel
dedicated mute button switch per channel (not click less)
dual mono output for driving headphones
powered by 4x AA battery or external adaptor 9-12VDC"

Czechoslovakia's 1977 Modular Synth, the Číslizvuk

via Connor 'Macleod' Eck on The MATRIXSYNTH Lounge

This is the first post to feature the Číslizvuk.

There was also the Vurt and the ASYZ.  Curious if there was any connection between them all.

Update: some info via Bastl Instruments:

"Milan Guštar wrote about him in the book Elektrofony II:

In 1977 Miroslav developed Kasper and Jaromir Vitek in the Czechoslovak Research Institute of Radio and Television (sausage) modular monophonic synthesizer Číslizvuk. The tool is analog, in some of his circuits are also used in digital integrated circuits. In addition to the prototype were built only three specimens obtained Pilsen Experimental Czechoslovak Radio studio, studio Czechoslovak Television and Music Faculty of the Prague Academy of Performing Arts. It currently has one tool in their collections Czech Museum of Music.

Číslizvuk is completely modular, individual blocks are interconnected and all their inputs and outputs are connected to the socket on the front panel. The tool includes two VCO, VCF, two, two VCA, two envelope generators, shaping and control voltage sequencer. VCO form a rectangular signal with a PWM signal continuously adjustable between a saw and a triangle. Both signals can be mixed. The dependence between the Debug voltage and frequency is 0.6 V / oct. VCF are third-order LPF. Beamformer control voltages comprises two inverters and two integrators with adjustable time constant. Sequencer has two channels and eight steps, individually adjustable lengths. All modules are placed in a common metal enclosure measuring 45 x 32 x 58 cm. Four-octave keyboard is connected dvanáctižilovým cable included in the set are two pedals generating variable control voltage."

Update 2: some additional in via Bastl Instruments:

"Bastl Instruments VURT was a research lab of radio and television and they mady several synths including this one Čislizvuk + this minimoog style one: http://czechkeys.blog.cz/0912/syntetizer-antares-ii"

Bastl Instruments ASYZ was another research lab focused more into film production - since it was in one city there must have been a connection... the music in the mainstream film production was awesome at that time: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c2FGi9pvLW4 , https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u5UzJjF1Emc"

Bastl Instruments bitRanger ADDON boards - BITBOARD & SYNAPSIS & OMSynth miniLab

Published on Dec 5, 2016 Bastl Instruments

OMSynth miniLab

Published on Dec 5, 2016 Bastl Instruments

"The BitBoard is a breadboard add-on module that allows users to build custom circuits and user interfaces for the BitRanger. It is solidly attached to the bitRanger and provides performance friendly stability. It either comes just on its own, or with with 2 pots, 2 buttons and 4 switches which can help you to start designing your own bitRanger interface."

"The synapsis is a 4×4 pushbutton matrix that offers performative control of the Bit Ranger.

There are 8 patch points connected to 4 rows (ABCD) and 4 columns (1234) of buttons. Pressing button A1 connects point A to point 1. A2 connects A to 2. B2 connects B to 2 and so on."

"The OMSynth (Open Modular Synthesizer) is an electronic musical instrument development interface that embodies the ethos and technical methodology of modular synthesis but is designed specifically for inventors. One way this is achieved is by encouraging invention to start at the breadboard level. From here circuits can be built up to robust, road ready instruments. By starting at the breadboard circuits are cheap and flexible and the inventor is free to quickly build and change designs without fighting against a high level form factor.

FEATURES: 3 channel audio mixer 1 Watt audio amplifier and built in speaker and ¼” audio output jack 5 modular potentiometers 3 modular DPDT latching pushbuttons Circuit prototyping area"

4 New Modules by Bastl Instruments Coming to NAMM

via Bastl Instruments:

"We are happy to announce 4 new modules and 2 expanders by Bastl Instruments. Come to see us at NAMM 2016 at Booth #5000 Hall C!

The biggest highlight is the POPCORN nonlinear CV/GATE Sequencer which performs original sequencing in tonal landscape. There is an entire universe of very musical ways how you can browse thru the 8 steps. This is all determined by a combination of triggers and CV signals you feed into the sequencer. 2 trigger inputs A and B advance the sequencer by the number of steps that you set with the knob (4,3,2,1,+1,+2,+3,+4). Reset sets the sequencer to step 1, OR, you can use the assignable CV Input to make it go to the step determined by CV. The CV input can also select the step directly or transpose the signal or do many other things! There is also a built in quantizer, selectable output range, gate and slide active per step with adjustable gate and slide times.

POPCORN has two EXPANDERS: one with jump button and individual GATE outputs for each step and another one that adds 5 more CV INPUTs to control the sequencer.

Foot control is a great way to enhance how modular synthesizer can be played as an instruments and this is exactly what modules CLUTCH and DUPDUP are for! CLUTCH can be used as a simple quad passive attenuator in modular setup but when you connect a stereo cable to the input and connect an expression or a volume pedal into it, it turns into continuous voltage source for your feet! And you can connect 4 pedals! DUPDUP on the other side implements 2 foot switches that can reroute your modular, bypass a signal processors, select between trigger sequences, mute signals or just send gates.

The last but not least is CIAO! 4 line outputs and headphone amp in just 5 HP is ideal for recording or live performance. Switches on the module enable you to make a patch just for your headphones and then mix it into the main output!

Modules are now available for preorder at Noise Kitchen shipping in March 2016. Modules will be available from local dealers in Spring 2016.

Prices exclude tax.
POPCORN 10HP nonlinear CV/GATE sequencer 210 EUR
POPCORN CV EXPANDER 2HP adds more CV inputs 49 eur
POPCORN GATE EXPANDER 2HP adds individual gate outputs + jump 49 eur
