MFB Triple VCO / DCO

via this auction
See the seller's other items for more.
"This is the original now obsolete module (osc-02 is different) fully working in very good cosmetic condition comes with cable for fitting to a doepfer power case... 3x voltage controlled oscillators in one module ! with seperate or pre mixed outputs and a ring modulation output of osc1 and osc2 !!!!!
all controllable by one cv input (1v/octave) or each voice has its own cv input (chords !)

This info is taken from the original web page now defunct

The OSC-01 Triple DCO provides you with three full-fledged analog oscillators under digital control in just one module. If desired, they can be played via one single control voltage for chords with fixed intervals. If you control the pitch of each DCO separately, for instance by a 3-row analog step sequencer, you can produce chords with changing intervals. The third oscillator features the extraordinary sawtooth waveform known from the first version SyLITE. Additionaly there´s a digital ring modulator.
Technical details

3 DCOs, that is analog oscillators with digitally controlled pitch (like in the Roland Juno 106), thus very stable. Each DCO has a CV-input (CV 1, 2, 3) for pitch, bu those are cascaded, so you can control all three oscillators with just one control voltage at CV input 1. The audio outs of the DCOs can be tapped at separate outputs or a common one. Furthermore puls width modulation, assignalble hard sync (os1 to 3 oder osc1+2 to osc3) and digital ring modulation of DCO 1 and 2 (internally switchable to 1 and 3) with a separate output. Three CV-inputs for frequency modulation (switchable to PWM) with a common attenuator for CV4 and an attenuator for CV6. DCO1 and 2: 16´, 8´, 4´, tune control, Waveforms: sawtooth, square, narrow pulse DCO3: 32´, 16´, 4´, tune control, Waveforms: square, narrow pulse, digital saw
inputs and outputs

cascaded inputs CV 1, 2 and 3 for FM. Inputs CV 4, 5 and 6 for FM or PWM (switchable), sync in, ring modulator output. Ausio out 1, 2 and 3 (cascaded)
measures and weight

Module for 3RU eurorack system / Width 16HP that´s 128,4mm x 80mm / module depth incl. knobs about 37mm / mounting depth (behind frontpanel) 21mm / power"

J3PO tries out the DCO-106 Juno-106 emulator

J3PO

"Thanks to my friends over at Cherry Audio for sending over their new Juno-106 emulator. This thing is really fun to make sounds on! Light on the CPU, and the FX are great. This is an overdubbed jam with some of the first sounds I made on the synth when I got it. Pardon the shaky camera on the keyboard, this was the first video I made in my new studio!"

Roland Interview with the Developers of the Original JUPITER-8, JUNO-106, and JX-3P

The interview is currently on Roland's site here. The text is captured below for the archives.

"WHAT ARE YOUR HONEST OPINIONS REGARDING THE ROLAND BOUTIQUE SERIES? AS DEVELOPERS OF THE ORIGINAL PRODUCTS, WHAT WERE YOUR IMPRESSIONS WHEN YOU HEARD ABOUT THE MODERN RECREATIONS?

Takahashi:I'd heard about this product series rather early on thanks to my position at the company, and my honest feeling about it was that I was excited. I was truly excited at the prospect of a simulation being released of a product that I was involved with decades ago. Synthesizers from those days have a unique feel that you can only get on analog, so I was interested in seeing how much of that could be reproduced in the digital realm. I knew that the Roland Boutique series development team was working on this very seriously. More than being intrigued, I was truly very excited.

Matsui:I'm no longer with the company, so I hadn't heard about this until very recently when someone mentioned, "We're working on this project relating to the JX-3P." Honestly, I was very happy to hear that. I was very happy to hear that Roland will be releasing a product that I had a part in developing in the past in a new form. That's because the JX-3P was a very special product for me.

DO YOU HAVE ANY INTERESTING MEMORIES RELATING TO THE JX-3P?

Matsui:That synth was developed at Roland's Matsumoto factory. I was working at Matsumoto at the time and was involved in guitar synth development. Guitar synths up to the GR-300 and GR-100 were based on converting pitch into a CV (Control Voltage) signal, which would then trigger an analog synth. But for the next generation of guitar synths, we decided to use a design where pitch would be converted to MIDI, which would then control the sound engine digitally (though the sound engine itself would still be analog). We studied how guitarists were using the GR-300 and GR-100 and realized that they didn't do much sound creation on their own. (Laughs.) So if that was the case, we decided to go with an easy-to-use synth with presets. And this was the start of the GR-700 project.

The [GR-700] would feature a built-in pitch-to-MIDI converter and a sound engine with presets. But even if this was to be a preset synth, it would still be too difficult to create sounds without any knob controls. So we made a programmer—solely for development purposes—with which we could adjust the tones. Sometime later in the development process, one of our superiors remarked, "You can attach a keyboard to that and make a polyphonic synth out of it, can't you?" [Laughs.] So that's how the JX-3P came about. The reason it's a six-voice polyphonic synth is because it started out as a sound engine for guitar synths, guitar being a six-string instrument. (Laughs.)

Why does the Juno-60 sound different from the Juno-106?

Juno-60 diagram on top
via Sequence 15
"So let's start by getting a couple of things on the board out front. The VCO, VCF, and VCA circuits are nearly identical. "How can you say that", you might ask, "when the 106 uses those 80017A's that keep failing, and the 60 doesn't?" Consider: The 60 uses a VCF filter circuit based on the IR3109 quad OTA. It uses a BA662 VCA to control the resonance. A second BA662 serves as the voice's VCA proper. As for the 106? The notorious 80017A is really just an encapsulation of three ICs and some resistors. The IC's? An IR3109 and a pair of BA662s! It's the same circuit, just in a smaller package. A lot of people don't realize that when you look at an ordinary IC, most of what you see is packaging; the actual integrated circuit is a tiny bit of silica embedded in the plastic. Roland bought a bunch of unpackaged 3109s and 662s and had someone encapsulate them, and voila, the 80017A was born. Similarly, the Juno-60's DCO circuit: the counter IC that times the DCO, the reset transistor, and the wave shaping circuitry are encapsulated into the much-less-infamous (because it seldom fails) MC5534 in the Juno-106. The voice circuits are, for all practical purposes, the same." So why do they sound different? Check out Sequence 15 for the full post.

The New Roland Boutique Synths - JP-08, JU-06, JX-03, K-25M - Pics & Full Details

We saw the JP-08 here. The full line of new Roland Boutique mini synths have been leaked.  The source as far as I can tell was Zzounds via Google cache: JP-08 ($399), JU-6 ($299), JX-03 ($299), K-25M ($99).

The first thing to note is the mini keyboards on these are optional. They are all desktop synths and the front panel can be angled to different degrees including flat when mounted to the keyboard. Each is a four voice synth but can be chained to add an additional 4 voices per unit. Each can run on batteries and has a built-in speaker. The keyboard is purchased separately. Details and pics on each follow.

"Roland JP-08 Synthesizer Module
The legendary Jupiter-8 synth is back - as a limited-edition module no bigger than a book. Part of the Roland Boutique series, the JP-08 is all about hands-on control and that iconic Jupiter sound. With an array of 36 knobs and sliders from the original Jupiter-8 front panel, the 4-voice JP-08 is highly programmable and encourages sonic experimentation, especially with the built-in speaker and battery operation. Using Roland's acclaimed Analog Circuit Behavior (ACB) technology the JP-08 faithfully reproduces the original Jupiter-8 sounds and adds a few new twists in the form of extra LFOs and expanded VCO range. You can even slide the JP-08 into the K-25m keyboard unit (not included) for a self-contained, go-anywhere synth experience.

Huge Synth. Small Package.
The Jupiter-8 was a big synth in every way; physically imposing with loads of knobs and sliders, and most importantly, a huge sound. The JP-08 retains the big sound of the Jupiter-8 but shrinks everything else - including the price - into a module measuring under 12" across.

Hands-on control
With such an expressive sound engine, you'll want to shape the sounds to match your mood. With 36 of the original parameters accessible from the front panel, the JP-08 is all about hands-on control, and even users of the Jupiter-8 will quickly feel at home as the user interface and programming 'feel' is highly reminiscent of the original.

New Sound-Shaping Options
Even though the JP-08 is an authentic recreation of the Jupiter-8, Roland also included a few extras. The JP-08 adds several new waveforms to the original architecture, including TRI and NOISE for the LFO and SIN for VCO-1, and both VCOs have an expanded range for even more sound shaping potential.

Roland Officially Announces the Boutique Line of Mini Synths

Welcome to Roland Boutique Published on Oct 1, 2015

"Three legendary Roland synths, now available as affordable, limited-edition sound modules. Recreating the sound and user interface of the JUPITER-8, JUNO-106 and JX-3P respectively, each module is packed with hands-on controls for deep editing, while battery operation and built-in speaker lets you make music on the move. Whether connected to the optional keyboard dock, hooked up to a keyboard or used with your DAW setup, the Roland Boutique series adds some classics to your library."

"Roland Boutique Series Announced

Historic Roland synths reborn in limited-edition Compact Sound Modules

Los Angeles, CA, October 1, 2015 — The Roland Boutique series is a new, limited-edition line of compact sound modules that recreate renowned analog synthesizers from the company’s historic past. Powered by Roland’s Analog Circuit Behavior (ACB) technology, the series includes three modules based on the JUPITER-8, JUNO-106 and JX-3P instruments from the 1980s. Armed with a full complement of hands-on controls derived from the original synths, each sound module can be used as a tabletop MIDI device or mounted in the companion K-25m Keyboard Unit to create a standalone compact synth.

The Roland Boutique series faithfully captures the legendary sound and response of classic Roland analog synths for modern electronic musicians. Using the proprietary ACB modeling that was first developed for instruments in the AIRA line such as the TR-8 and SYSTEM-1, the essence of the original instruments is recreated in every detail, right down to the analog component level.

Each Roland Boutique module is no bigger than a book and can run on USB bus power or batteries, providing grab-and-go versatility for computer music production and live playing. The modules also include built-in speakers, a convenient feature for monitoring the sound in mobile environments.

With the JP-08, the legendary JUPITER-8 synth is back in a compact and powerful package. Featuring 36 knobs and sliders from the original JUPITER-8 front panel, the four-voice JP-08 is highly programmable and encourages sonic experimentation. The JP-08 faithfully reproduces the original JUPITER-8 sounds and adds a few new twists in the form of extra LFOs and expanded VCO range.

Often described as one of the last great synths of the analog era, the JUNO-106 became a favorite thanks to its warm sounds and instant sound-shaping ability. The four-voice JU-06 module continues this approach, with 23 parameters controllable via the front panel and classic JUNO sound, complete with the original’s signature chorus effect. New enhancements include a faster LFO and continuously variable high-pass filter.

The JX-03 module continues the legacy of the dual-oscillator JX-3P synth. While the original featured a button-driven interface for immediate access to preset sounds, it was highly programmable when paired with the optional PG-200 controller. The four-voice JX-03 inherits all 24 knobs from the PG-200, plus the distinctive JX-3P tonal character. Added extras not present in the original synth include new waveforms, expanded DCO range, and cross-modulation options.

In addition to their unique ACB sound engines and model-specific controls, each Roland Boutique module is equipped with dual ribbon controllers and a built-in step sequencer. With their USB and MIDI I/O connectors, the modules can easily integrate with studio setups and other MIDI keyboards. Each module also features a chain mode that allows the user to connect two or more modules of the same type to increase the available polyphony as needed.
With the optional K-25m Keyboard Unit, users have the ability to turn a Roland Boutique module into a compact, all-in-one synth with 25 velocity-sensitive keys. Each module mounts in the K-25m quickly and easily, and can be interchanged with another in no time. Once in the K-25m, the module can be mounted flat or angled in two different positions for easier access to the panel controls.

Cherry Audio Introduces Quadra - ARP Quadra Emulation, Synth Stack 2, Year 3 Collection

video upload by Cherry Audio

Right on target.

"The Cherry Audio Quadra is a super-accurate and immensely improved emulation of the ARP Quadra synthesizer, originally released in 1978 - a rare and coveted “unicorn” instrument in the synthesizer world, reproduced for the first time as a virtual instrument.

We've wildly expanded it for an experience that blows away the real thing in every conceivable way. Each of its four sections is independently assignable to any region of the keyboard for endless splitting and layering flexibility. The overall sound quality has been improved for a richer and fatter tone. And not only did we make a killer emulation of the onboard phaser effect, we added a stereo chorus/flanger, a syncable echo, and studio-quality reverb - all individually routable for unprecedented effects flexibility."

Juno-106 vs. JX-8P: Basic Sounds-- Is the JX as Powerful as the Juno?? A Friendly Comparison

Published on Apr 25, 2019 MR TUNA Music

"Pour a fresh cup of coffee and have a seat on your comfiest wooden barstool, it's time for a friendly comparison between two awesome vintage synths: The Roland Juno-106 and JX-8P.
Both members of the Juno family and both 6-voice DCO analog synthesizers, there's a lot to compare; but we focus on the 106 feature-set and how well the 8P emulates that classic Juno sound.

Let me know what you think about how these two super impressive synths stack up against each other!"

"A really tidy and clean Juno 106 that has just undergone refurbishment and service. The Voice have been removed stripped of the coating that is known to cause problems, and replaced in the PCB. All the signal line electrolytic capacitors have been replaced in the Jack board, the BBD chips have been replaced (no noisy chorus function) and the key-bed has been fully stripped, cleaned and reassembled.

A full tune and service procedure has been conducted to the service manual procedure and specs.

Visual condition is very good with only minor marks on the main surfaces or end caps. The printing and paint on the control face remains perfectly clear and clean in all areas.. There is a minor scratch on the front lip of the control panel above the keybed (not on the main control surface) and a small scratch on the RH plastic end cap. You will not see these in the pictures, they really are minor blemishes. The frequency slider and DCO slider have both been replaced with new parts to assure faultless performance. All pots, buttons, switches and the bender all work correctly and smoothly and have no caps missing. All the blue and white buttons have been cleaned to bring them back to original colour (on most 106’s you will see the blue buttons have turned green with age)..."

Cherry Audio | Polymode Synthesizer
video by Cherry Audio

"The latest Cherry Audio instrument is here! Joining the ranks of the lauded DCO-106, CA2600, and MG-1 Plus comes the Polymode Synthesizer.

The Polymode Synthesizer is inspired by the groundbreaking Moog Polymoog synthesizer. One of the world’s first polyphonic synthesizers, its unique multiple parallel filter implementation and mod routings give it a sound like no other synth, The original Polymoog sounded incredible but could be challenging to operate and was prone to breakdowns.

Cherry Audio’s Polymode sidesteps all of the drawbacks of the original instrument and massively expands its capabilities. With a streamlined user interface and immense modulation capabilities, Polymode sets a new standard for animated, sonically evolving string, pad, and choral tones."

Roland MKS-30 Kiwi Technics-30 JX3P SN 502531

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

"This is essentially a hybrid of a Roland JX3P (oscillators) and Juno 106 (envelopes and filter) in a 2U rack. Thanks to the Juno filters, it has a more refined sound than the JX3P, but it still retains the crucial features of 2 DCOs and 3 envelopes of the KIWI mod....putting into Jupiter 6 territory. Actually smoother than a Jupiter 6 (I had one next to it for comparison for a while). If you like the Juno 106 sound but wish it had more advanced features, this is your dream synth.

Also including 6 extra original Juno voice chips that I pulled from my 106 when I upgraded to Analog Renasiance chips. This unit still has the original chips but they have been refurbished, so with this unit you'll have a total of 12 original Juno chips...plenty to last you if you're a stickler for the original sound (as am I).

Upgrade performed by a pro-technician. Here is the list of features:

1536 Tones in 3 Sets of 512 can be stored and all can be edited. It is also possible to edit any Tone using the front panel, PG-200 or midi.

Tones are stored in Flash memory so no battery is required.

MidiCC & Sysex support for parameters edits and Midi Sysex support for Tone Load. The Kiwi30 will support full midi control and editing in real time. Midi thru maintained on this unit.
